Kelly had a plan to hit some peaks in the middle of the metropolis. I had hiked some of these peaks back in 2009. Nothing since, so I was game.
Fun day bouncing around to the different trails and peaks. Great lunch afterwards at El Super Tacos.
Good times. Thanks Kelly! :)

I hadn’t tackled either of these since @Tortoise_Hiker and I completed them as part of our 7 Summits Challenge back in 2011.

Starting at Lookout Mountain, the chill quickly diminished as the climb began immediately from the trailhead. The steeper section was a bit rocky, but the burn was short-lived, with the top reached within half a mile.

The trail I took down was slightly slippery, leading me through Lookout Mountain Park.

Next, I circled around Shadow Mountain and reached the peak from the east. Initially, I had planned to descend to the north and complete the Shadow Mountain loop, but the ridgeline looked far more interesting, so I headed west instead.

The day wrapped up with some neighborhood walking to get back over to Lookout Mountain and complete the adventure.

It was a nice day exploring one of the city parks.

After work hike. The thought was to hit both peaks and then to come down the back side of the southern most peak. Parked on 27th St (which is on the north side) and connected to the trails from Acoma Dr. I usually don’t start from this “TH”, but I kind of liked it. There are a couple of options almost immediately. You can turn right and stay low, or you can “head in” and start ascending. I headed in. The trail splits a couple of time as you climb giving you options on how aggressive you want to be. Initially I took a more casual route that got me to a mid level trail that circled the peak. On this mid level trail I turned east to to follow a clear path that goes straight up the east side of the mountain. A lot of elevation change in a short distance. Hitting the peak, I worked my west along the ridge until I came upon a semi used trail that brought me down to to the saddle between the mountains. Ascended the second peak from the north side. Followed what looked to be the most used trail (among many) that became more gradual as it worked its way up and to the west side.I had several options to take a more direct route and eventually did. (I will say I liked the trail that I took to the top. Well established and it provided a more casual route to the top). Once on top, I made my to the south end thinking I would follow a trail down the south side. I must have “misremembered”, because there wasn’t really an established trail going down the south side. The foliage is sparse enough and the slope gradual enough that I was able to pick my way down to the “loop” trail without too much difficulty. Connecting to the loop trail, I followed it CCW. Actually took some user trails as I circled the eastern half. Nice to revisit some of the lesser used routes. Encountered a couple of hikers and several quail. Very breezy conditions, provided some of the best viewing conditions I’ve seen in awhile. Great views of the surrounding mountains!

Quick hike before it got hot. At the top, good views all around. Some haze in the skies this morning. More people than usual for this mountain, but never too crowded. In a wash near the bottom of the hill, I saw what could be a gopher snake chase a pack rat. Pack rat got away and the snake missed his chance for a tasty breakfast. Not sure about the snake, but at least it wasn't rattling!

After work hike. Not one of my favorite places to hike, mainly because there is no designated place to park. I usually park on the street (north side), which is what I did today. Once I get on the trails there not bad. Did a loop going CCW. Hit some of the knolls along the way and then when I circled the southern end, I went up the back side and bagged the southern peak. This elevation is a little lower than the northern peak, but not by much. Lot of different user trails in this system. I used some that I hadn’t done in a while. Weather was perfect. Enjoy while we can. Only encountered 3 hikers. No wildlife.

Short after work hike. Haven't been out here in years, but I was looking for something short and in the area and this worked. There is no official TH that I know of so where one starts depends on what street/church parking you utilize. Most of the obvious avenues to the mountain occur on either the north or west sides. Since my sister use to live a few blocks to the north that has always been my starting point. Did this trail in a CCW direction. I strayed off the main trail a couple of times, getting drawn in by user trails. Still did the loop. Just a variation of it. There are very few trail markers for this trail system, so what was the intended trail and what are now communal trails will probably never be distinguished. Only mild elevation gain with this loop. Never hit a peak. Saw one trail runner and that was it.

Finally had time to get out for a hike, sadly my first of the month...pulled up to the TH about 5 to get in some fun. Certainly warm out this afternoon, but I did get some late cloud cover that cooled it down a few degrees. I put together a loop on the fly to knock out most of the high points in the area, no real big peaks but at the end of the day I had squeezed over 1100' of gain out of only a bit over 3 miles. I love this little mountain, surprisingly rugged for a short in-towner. The hillsides were simply aglow with flowers, brittlebush in full bloom, and good show from the creosotes too. Dang, I need to get back into hiking shape...

Great short hike. Great views from the top of each little peak. Many different trails through the area so actual distance will vary depending on the path you choose. The day we did it was overcast and the rain came in as we were on the tail end of the hike. Made for a great experience. Our feet were soaked by the time we got back to the trailhead but our spirits were high. So glad I remembered the rain jackets.

After work hike. Hoped to meet up with my sister who lives in the area, but no luck. Still a nice hike to do. I did what I consider to be a fair approximation of the loop. There is minimal signage and quite a few trails so ther are quite few available interpretations of the loop. I didn't hit any of the peaks and tried to avoid any radical elevations changes...trying to give my arches/tendons some more recovery time. It's been a year since I had done this trail so it was a nice refresher. Trails were busy...busy for Shadow Mountain. Passed about 10 people enjoying the weather. Clear skies today!! It would have been great to have gotten some elevation. I bet you you could have seen for miles.

Got in a good urban double hike this afternoon, started out by Mountain View about 4:30. Second time up Stoney Mountain, this is a fun quick one with good effort. Be aware, there is a good sized bee gathering about a tenth of a mile up the summit spur trail, it is on the left hand side of the trail in one of the numerous rock holes. They were not aggressive, but if you stumbled into the rock it would make for a pretty lousy day. After this quick one, I rolled over to Acoma to start my way up Shadow Mountain. I climbed the main peak, and then proceeded to hit every high point in the area by way of a convoluted loop. Ran into a few folks up on the summit when I had come around for a second trip up. Otherwise, very few other people out on the trail, surprising for such a great weather day.

I was on way to North Mountain but stopped on way down cave Creek Road to check for nearby trails on HAZ app (a great feature BTW). Discovered this trail, had never done, wanted something simple, so gave it a try. As the description says it is not well maintained, lots of lose rocks, and easy to miss path several areas, especially where washouts have created what looks like a better path. You can see on my GPS route that got way down below trail at one area, what I thought was path ended at ragged edge so checked HAZ and found trail by scrambling up.

But despite that I enjoyed this area, lots of nice views of mountains surrounding the valley.

Awesome weather but already hitting 70 F at 10am - winter is ending.

Edited AEG from 340 ft to my 416 - guess difference was for off trail few spots.

After work hike. Parked at my sister's house and walked in from the north side. Actually did a deformed figure 8. Since there are multiple user trails on this mountain it is hard to describe. Entered from a cul-de-sac on the north side and climbed the hills that are east of the northern most peak. Then followed some low lying trails on the east side of the mountain, which were in the shade :) to get to the southern most peak. Climbed that peak and went down the back side to connect to another low lying trail . (This low lying trail actual does a loop around the 3 peaks, but today I stayed mainly on the east side to took advantage of the shade). So on my return trip I hit some of the same low lying trails as I had used on my entry. I did exit the park a little further east than from where I had entered it, which completed the deformed figure eight. Only saw 1 trail runner while I was out and just a few lizards. It was breezy and in the mid 100's.

Overcast and muggy today, I took a slightly different path than this one but I didn't see an option for it. I started at Acoma, took the circumference east and summited the southernmost of the mountains in this park. Can't really call it a summit or a mountain, it only took about 5 mins to get the full elevation. I came back down sketchily along the South face and hooked up with the Western part of the Circumference trail.

There is a beautiful modern church at the SW corner of the park with two rows of nice Palo Verdes, by the way. Worth a visit.

I went straight up the saddle of Prominence and down to the circumference trail to meet back with Acoma. I was dripping sweat by the end with this mugginess, it makes a huge difference when it doesn't evaporate immediately! I only ever saw 2 other people and that was on the southern mountaintop.

Took the pups on a nice morning hike. It was hard to stay on the intended route. There are a lot of trails going in every direction. I hit all the peaks on the North end. I will be back for a couple smaller peaks on the south, and to do the Mega loop.
