At the beginning of 2021, I set out to hike the entire 240-mile Maricopa Trail. Before today, I had completed only 26 miles. Needing to up my game, I decided I would do one segment per month over the winter.

I’m not sure what the official Maricopa Trail segments are, but for me the 4th segment is from the Daisy Mountain F.D., in Anthem, 8⅓ miles to the Bob Bentley TH, on Carefree Highway. And my 5th segment is from Bob Bentley TH 10⅓ miles to the Agua Fria Trailhead, at Lake Pleasant.

I started hiking west from the Daisy Mountain F.D. at 7:20 a.m. The first two miles have low desert shrubbery; the third mile along Deadman Wash is more woodsy. There was lots of traffic on the roads, but no people or horses on the trail.

Crossing under Gavilan Peak Pkwy, tall folks may need to duck.

On the west side of I-17, the trail “climbs” 30 ft., then crosses an old burn area along Deadman Wash as it approaches the FCI Phoenix road. If you hear shooting that is the Ben Avery Shooting Range to your left, not a prison break to your right.

Just before seven miles, I turned west on a unnumbered jeep trail crossing Biscuit Flat. If, instead, you continue south, the Bob Bentley TH is in 1⅓ miles (completing my 4th segment). The next two miles are a water and fibre optic right-of-way, with many pipes, pumps and manholes. There were signs indicating the Maricopa Trail was against the fence on the right, but I don’t think anyone ever used that part, as it is all grassed over. I mean, why bother, when the jeep trail is perfectly serviceable?

Just past the CEMEX quarry, the jeep trail takes a jog to the right, then crosses the dry New River flood plain. In a ½ mile, the jeep trail turns north, following the power line. Normally, there are plenty of trail signs, but this bit was confusing. Instead, continue straight onto single track. Note that neither the jeep trail turning north, nor the power line along it, show up on sat view, which tends to lag reality by about three years.

After "climbing" 30 ft. out of the New River bottom, the trail turns north, becoming bluff edge jeep trail. Again, there was trail trail a few yards away, but why bother? Especially when several rubber tramps had parked their ratty RVs / mobile meth labs across it? 💉

Mind the small jumping cholla grove when the trail nears a second quarry.

After crossing New River Rd., just short of 13 miles, the Maricopa Trail passes under two sets of 500 kV power lines. One set was loudly crackling, the other I could not hear. Wonder why? Good thing I already reproduced!

Where New Waddell Dam becomes visible, the trail descends 200 ft. in a ½ mile into a wash -- the only real elevation shange in 16 miles. The wash was my favorite par of the day, as it was isolated & quiet. No sounds of rushing vehicles or buzzing planes. (Of which there are always many around Lake Pleasant.)

At 15 miles, near the Hank Raymond Lodge, the trail climbs out of the wash, winds around a canal, then follows Sunset Point Rd. to the Agua Fria Trailhead.

I had stubbed my toe pretty good descending to the wash, and I definitely had blisters, so I was happy to finish the third longest hike since I took up this hobby!

Started 6:30am. Cool to start with but warmed up quickly. I'd done this section a year ago and felt like doing it again. Went east of 7th St. for about 2 miles. Returned to parking area and then went west of 7th St. for a little more than a mile. Clear day with good views.

I knew it would be one of the more remote sections of the Maricopa Trail, but I saw no one...not a soul...while I was out there. There was one other car in the small trailhead lot when I returned.

A couple of days after my previous hike in Estrella Mountain Regional Park, I took a walk around my neighborhood. The first mile, no problem. But then my right knee started feeling wonky. The further I went, the more it hurt. By the time I finished the second mile, I could barely walk, it hurt so bad. 😫

Without hiking, I have nothing: Hiking keeps me relatively healthy, relatively sane, and fills my time writing the post-hike blog and editing the video. I have to admit: I was scared.

Long story short, I got my knees x-rayed and my doctor recommended Osteo Bi-Flex Glucosamine Chondroitin pills to maintain cartilage structure, slow cartilage deterioration and hopefully reduce pain. 🙏🏻

Since I have already hike the two Maricopa Trail segments before this one — Bronco Trailhead to Spur Cross and Spur Cross to Cave Creek Regional Park, both counter-clockwise, I decided to hike CCRP to the Anthem Trailhead / Daisy Mountain Fire Department, the same direction.

*** The community where road construction & other infrastructure was being put in March, 2019, up at the end of 40th Dr., has seen no further work. No houses, not even a demo unit. ***

West of 32nd St., the Maricopa Trail skirts a ranch property area — complete with loudly barking dogs — for ¾ of a mile, before turning northwest up a small canyon, for the only climb of the day, 150 AEG in a ½ mile. The best views of Apache Peak are along that climb. 📸

From the Apache Peak saddle, the Maricopa Trail follows a contour line west for ¾ of a mile along the north slope of Hill 2875. More ranch properties are to the right, just downslope, in New River. Straight ahead is a very striking, free standing, formation that apparently has no name. It is marked Hill 2565 on the topo. [ photo ]

Take care crossing paved, 2-lane, New River Rd., as the Maricopa Trail intersects it in the middle of a descending blind curve. 👀

The first mile of the Maricopa Trail west of New River Rd. passes within 100 ft. multiple sketchy properties, littered with debris, boarded up windows, and broken down trailers. Despite the meth-y vibe, no barking dogs.

Halfway into the Spear S Ranch to Anthem Trailhead segment, the Maricopa Trail crosses Rodger Creek for the first of three times. All were dry crossings. Not a spot of water.

The final ¾ of a mile, after the third creek crossing, splits more horse properties to the south (left) and Anthem golf course homes to the north (right). The area is dense with stinknet, aka globe chamomile, an invasive species.

Knee held up well, with no crippling pain the next morning. 👍

I was on another timetable for this Saturday.

I had been curious about some of this area so time to scratch some itches.

Itch List

Circumference Of Elephant Mountain - Scratched.
The western side is nothing exciting, and if you don't have a State Trust Land Permit, ya may want to stay away.
It appears it gets a bunch of traffic, but I saw not a sole.

There was about a 2 mile section of trail before I turned on Elephant Mountain trail, that Aravipa Running had an event on. They were all friendly.

Elephant Mountain Summit - Scratched
There is a pretty good use trail, that turns into a game trail for the lower 2/3rds of the climb. Only one slightly tricky spot that involved contorting to miss prickly stuff while climbing.
[ youtube video ]
I practiced LNT. I left none of me on the mountain, and did my best to take none of the prickly mountain stuff back with me.
It was a challenge thought scooting down some of the slopes with all the dead cactus needles.

Rondo Spring - Scratched
The horseman carved rock I'd seen on previous hikes, peaked my curiosity about the spring. So I had to see it.
Anyone know the name of the portion of the trail that runs between Ringtail Spring (TR252 at Elephant Mtn) and Rondo Spring?

Starting at New River Rd, I headed east on the MT for about two miles finding seven newly published geocaches on the way. After that, I turned around and ran most of the way back to my truck. The trail is in good shape and it was an enjoyable early evening jaunt. Some Buckhorn Cholla were blooming, both read and yellow blossom varieties.

It's kind of embarrassing, but I pretty much turned back on this peak a few months ago. I got unnerved and worried about getting down. Not TODAY!!!

This is a good hike and climb for someone trying to get use to some scrambling at the top of a peak. The trail basically ends about 200-300 feet from the summit and the rest is a mixture of light and hand over hand scrambling.

There's an American flag and mailbox at the summit. Only saw a screeching hawk, no javelinas, no mountain lion. Signed the summit log and got down. I find if I audibly talk myself down the steep scrambling descents it helps, LOL... :D

Hiked Maricopa trail starting from Anthem TH. Not much positive to say about this trail. Started off kind of nice with the mountains to the east (the ones I was walking away from) and the trail being single trek. The trail quickly joined a dirt road that eventually found its way between two major, paved roads. I was within sight of cars and houses the whole time. The trail was not engaging and had very little elevation change. It was only after I got to the west side I-17 that I left the homes behind. And this was only because the vegatation got high enough that I couldn't see that far... the homes were still out there, just not as close. Sadly, it was near my turn around point (Pioneer Rd) that I came across a wild burro that seemed to be very sick. It was lying just off the trail breathing heavily with total disinterest with what was going on around it. I was very frustrated because I wanted to do something to try to help the burro, but I didn't know what to do. (When I got home I tried calling the BLM and Arizona Game and Fish without any success). On the return trip, I came across a coyote that probably was wishing it was somewhere else. It was at a section where the trail was sandwiched between main roads with limited foliage. The coyote was going one way and I the other. It had its head on a swivel as it eyed me on oneside and the cars on the other.

I can only think of several reasons why anyone would hike this trail: You live in the area and it provides a decent alternative to walking along the side of the road, you want to do the circuit of the Maricopa trail system (the system is not done yet; it is still an ongoing project) or you like looking at cars as you hike. I'm hopeful that the next section will improve.

Hiked from what I believe is the Emerson Trailhead. I hiked north to south. The parking facility was nice for being as far removed as it was. It would have been nice if they had posted trail maps of the surrounding areas to give bikers/hikers an idea of their choices. Luckily I had HAZ and had a pretty good idea of what to expect. The trail was as described: flat, straight and not much of a wow factor. I did get out on the trail just prior to sunrise and so was treated to a beautiful sunrise as it crested the Four Peaks. Saw several rabbits and on couple of occassions heard and in the distance saw (wild?) burros. I hiked in for about five miles to what I guess is the official beginning of the Black Canyon Trail. (I did this section backwards.) It is at this point (5 miles in) that I realized the Maricopa Trail system briefly tied in to the BCT. It looked as though the Maricopa trail continued on to the West, but I have no idea where or for how long. On my way back I discovered where the Maricopa joined the BCT (I would guess about 3.7 miles into the hike).

This was an ok hike, the trail in this section really isn't much. The best part of the hike was that I discovered two other better hikes in this area, but more on that later.

From the Anthem TH off of Desert Hills Road and 11th Ave. I headed east towards New River Road first. For the most part, the trail consists of sections of ATV roads that have been marked with Maricopa Trail markers (or just the posts). The last section parallels Linda Lane and goes behind some quirky houses and some double wides. At one point a rather large german shephard came out greet me. He wasn't too aggressive, but he seemed rather insistent on keeping up the barking and kept advancing as I kept hiking past. Eventually I heard a disembodied voice say "Git ovir heer". I was hoping that voice was directed towards the dog. It seemed as though it was as the dog soon thereafter stopped barking and backed off. I swear though, I could almost hear the faint sound of a banjo being played.

At New River Road, I discovered a new trailhead has been constructed called the Spear S Ranch Trailhead. This is great news because a better hike in this area seems to be Apache Peak, which is very accessible from this new TH. I would estimate a hike from New River Rd. to Apache Peak in the 7-8 mile range. Looking forward to doing that once the weather cools down as my next unplanned weekend to hike in AZ will be in June.

I made my way back to the Anthem TH and was soon tailed by a family of horseriders. They got closer very slowly, but never close enough for me to find it appropriate to yield the trail. They finally got off track on one of the other ATV roads and disappeared, giving me some peace and quiet again.

The trail to I-17 is very....meh. To the north is Anthem, and to the south is some new non-HOA housing. The trail basically following a strip of land the size of a highway meridian between the two developments. and there are no connected streets between them for some odd reason, which I found to be a big pain earlier in the day when I thought it would be a better idea to try to get to the TH through Anthem.

After taking the trail under I-17 over to Thompson Road, I noticed that it continues on from there, with official MT markers and all. This looks like another good hike to try sometime from Thompson Road, which at this point is a dirt road and has some parking available. I checked some maps and it looks like from I-17 out to Lake Pleasant and back should be a similar 12 mile or so distance. And west of I-17 it appears that the trail finally gets back to some more isolated desert away from housing developments, roads, and trailer parks. Looking forward to checking out these other two hikes later this year.
