Another dog run, wasn't going to bring her but by this point of the stay, she knew that I go running in the mornings, and leaving her would not be admissible. Decided to check out Ice Cave Trail, depending on how I felt, I could turn around at the cave, or go all the way to the Blue Ridge trail. Ended up going the whole way. Was surprised how much water was still flowing in Porter Creek.

On the way back, the dog thought she smelled something and was pulling extra hard. But I think in her narrow-minded focus on following the scent, she missed hearing what I suspect to have been the elk she smelled. Oh well.

Checked out the cave, fenced off but it would be so easy to crawl under the gate that it's probably just a CYA sort of fence.

The original plan for this hike was to start at Porter Creek TH, take the ice cave trail to the ice cave, turn around, head back the same way until the Osprey trail Junction. At that point, we wanted to take the osprey trail until we were able to cross porter creek north of Scott Reservoir. Then the plan was to walk along the western shore of the reservoir until we were back at the ice cave trail, by the southern part of the reservoir. This mostly worked, but it wasn't ideal. The first item of interest to note is that the wooden foot bridge crossing porter creek north of Scott Reservoir has been taken out by a flood. You can see the bridge laying battered and broken on the south bank of the creek at the crossing location. Porter creek is 10 to 15 feet wide at that location and flowing with lots of water. The place where it seems you should cross is too deep. We went east a bit and managed to find some rocks to hop on to make a mostly dry crossing. We then continued along the osprey trail, but instead of going up on the ridge towards the osprey trail head, we headed back towards the reservoir, so we could continue our trek around the lake. We went up onto the mesa for a bit, away from the shore. Someone is camping in a tent back there, but we didn't see any people. We decided instead of being up high that we would try to walk along the shore right next to the water. We found a use path down. It is very scenic with great views of the reservoir. The ground itself was comprised of large basalt rocks which made for slow going. We decided to go back up on the Mesa in hopes of making some better time. While we started our hike in the bright sun and high humidity, the afternoon monsoon was coming with some beautiful thunder clouds in the sky. We were able to make better time on the meadow terrain on top of the mesa. The map shows there being a 4WD road, but there is nothing there. Just cows and a metal corral. We continued on south until we hit the Campground (where we saw a sign that said "road closed" in front of the nonexistent road we had supposedly been walking on!). From the Campground, we made our way back down to the southern shore of the Reservoir. We continued onto the raised earthen dam and back into the ice cave trail where we headed back to the car.

The first part of the hike was mostly uneventful. From the trailhead, the trail follows the powerlines in a lush green area with porter creek running muddy and slow. It's a very pretty area. The trail through the hike was quite muddy in places, as you would expect during the rainy monsoon season. The trail was easy to follow where there was a trail. There is no trail from the north tip to the south tip of the Reservoir on the west side. The rest of the trail is very clearly marked with the white mountain trail system white diamonds on the trees. Plus, most of the trail is heavily used by horses, so it is deep and rutted with hoof prints. The stable is right next to the trails, and the trails are heavily used by horseback riding trail rides. We saw 5 groups in the time when we were on the ice cave trail. We saw hoof prints on the osprey trail, but no actual horses while we were hiking. For this reason, I do not think I would do this trail again. The trail is a bit of a muddy mess and there were lots of horses.

From the southeastern tip of the Reservoir, the ice cave trail veers south and east away from the reservoir, eventually meeting up with the osprey trail which is clearly marked by a large wooden sign. From this Junction, the ice cave is about 0.5 miles away. Note that the old trail as marked in the map was alongside the ice cave. The new trail, however, bypasses the cave. If you stay on the marked trail, you will not see the cave. We did this initially and overshot the cave by 0.5 miles. We turned around and we were able to find the spur trail to the cave easily. When coming from the osprey trail juncture, take a left at the next Junction. The spur is actually "labeled" with branches arranged in the shape of arrows pointing to the ice cave. The cave itself is surrounded by an ill-fitting fence with a gate locked with a chain and lock. This won't keep anyone out though. There are two sections of fence with a good two feet of clearance underneath. I am sure people go in there, but you can see the collapsed part of the cave right at the beginning, from outside the gate. It was nice to feel the cool air coming out of the cave!

There were quite a few wildflowers of various colors along the rail and around the reservoir. Also worthy of note is the amount of ospreys we save flying. We saw them initially in the air on the first third or so of the osprey trail from the ice cave trail. We saw about 5 birds. We saw 5 more osprey flying quite close to the ground on the dam/raised embankment on the south side of the reservoir. Osprey are beautiful and impressive! They were one of the main highlights of the hike!

A nice hike despite our extra adventures!

Considerable water and flow in the creek. Along the ice cave trail, the creek was muddy, brown, and sluggish. North of the reservoir, on the osprey trail, the creek is clear and flowing strong.

For Thanksgiving my family decided to head up to Pinetop Lakeside area for a couple of days. Before everyone arrived I decided to try out some of the trails in the area since I have never really hiked in the White Mountains area. I opted for the Blue Ridge Trail and the upper portion of the Ice Cave Trail. This hike was kind of a sleeper, just a long walk through Ponderosa Juniper forest. There was an elevation gain of about 1300 feet but spread out over about a 4 mile section of the almost 14 mile loop. The views are very limited because of the trees. With my time limited and the trail in good condition I was able to keep a 3 MPH pace. The weather was perfect about 22 degrees at 0700 and in the upper 40’s around noon with full sunshine and no breeze to speak of. There is logging in the area cutting down selectively, mainly on the eastern portion of the trail. Most of the ponderosa here are 90 to 100 years old growing since the last large logging operations in the early 1900’s. Ice cave is an old volcanic vent that vents out a constant 52 degree air (I didn’t feel it, it would have been warmer than the outside air). There was a chain link fence around it so I only got within 20 feet of it, but I read afterword that there was a gate that allows access.
I would not drop everything to hike the trails in the Pinetop Lakeside area but if you are in the area and feel the urge for a hike or just need to walk off a Thanksgiving dinner the trails in this area are worth it. The trail system up here is really good, well maintained and marked.

cloudy and occasional light rain made for a wonderfully refreshing hike in the woods with Sierra, Michelle, Grandma and Grandpa!

ice cave is pretty neat. you can feel cool air coming out. Scott reservoir had a decent amount of water and was surrounded by a zillion yellow flowers. :) nice little spot with flowers along Porter Creek too.

very pleasant hike

Pinetop AZ and Area - April 2015

197 miles, 3hrs 45min per Google Maps

Bob Mohle's country getaway cottage on the outskirts of Pinetop AZ was offered up as an excuse to burn off some forfeitable vacation time. With some backdrop interest in the local history surrounding lumbering/lumberingu railroads, we headed out to the White Mountains with seven basic clues;

Day 1 - Sunday April 5th, 2015
FitBit totals = 7.64 miles, 770 AEG (77 floors)

On the road by 3pm after Easter brunch with the family. Arrived at Bob's Pinetop cottage about 7-ish and enjoyed some crisp country air with temperatures expected to drop into the hi 30's later that evening...

Day 2 - Monday April 6th, 2015
FitBit totals = 6.97 miles, 410 AEG (41 floors)

Up at dawn with a loose plan to visit Kinishba Ruins, Fort Apache Historic Park, Pacheta Lake, Pacheta Falls, and scout out remnants of the logging railway that ran between McNary and the ghost town of Maverick. Flat tire on our way out from Pacheta Falls to Maverick put an end to the exploration (made it back to Pinetop to see NCAA final game tipoff).
Apache Railway that ran from Holbrook to McNary to Maverick :next: https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/cdm/ref/ ... lhch/id/34 NOTE: ran as a tourist train during 1960's and 1970's until fire in 1980 (1976 in some references) at the McNary Lumber Mill combined with changes in tribal lumbering policy led to its closure. Ran under brand of White Mountain Scenic Railway.

Finish the day with some "Hollywood History" by watching Walter Hill's "GERONIMO - An American Legend" with Wes Studi, Jason Patric, Gene Hackman, Matt Damon, and Robert Duvall :next: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107004/.
Our visit to Fort Apache and seeing General Crook's cabin made me think that movie would be a great bookend to our day...
Later that night, I find the best historic reference for the Apache Railway, an article from the January 1963 Arizona Highways entitled "First Caboose to Maverick"
Day 3 - Tuesday April 7th, 2015
FitBit totals = 9.60 miles, 790 AEG (79 floors)

Up at dawn and after a hearty breakfast, headed over to Greens Peak - Four Knolls area to take in the stellar panoramic views (despite hurricane-like winds). Explored Sunrise Ski Resort area to see if tram to top of mountain was open (everything closed to public). Off to explore the headwaters of the Little Colorado and the Mount Baldy Loop. When we parked at the West Baldy Trail #95 TH, I heard a distinct hissing sound - Another flat tire!
Fortunately I was able to limp back to Pinetop where Rex @ Future Tire (https://www.futuretireaz.com ) took care of us. Today's flat was caused by a roofing nail and a simple plug-n-patch repair to the Goodyear Wrangler P275/65R18. Monday's flat was a rock puncture and not repairable. Disappointed with Ford's off-road package tires (these weren't my first off-road flat tires), I let Rex sell me a Cooper Tire Trailcutter AT2 that we mounted as my spare for now as I contemplate what to replace my other 4 tires with (anyone have experience with Cooper Tire Trailcutter AT2's???). A special "shoutout to Louis Weaver (Bob's handyman in Pinetop) who met us as we limped into town just in case we needed a ride
Lugs are 21mm, stock tire wrench lugs 7/8", yet have specialty 21mm wrench in truck
(Shouldn't the 7/8" lugs on truck all be 21mm to fit wrench?)
Back on the road after lunch at Red Devil Pizza :next: https://www.reddevilrestaurant.com (Randy and CJ took care of us during lunch) and headed over to Porter Mountain and

This was probably not the best of ideas.

Adam, Liz, and I were all gung-ho to train for the race, so we decided that a weekend in Pinetop would be perfect. We stayed at the cabin, which was a really nice alternative to crashing on a sleeping pad for the nth time.

James joined us for this trip. We decided on this series of trails, since the race would also take place on dirt. Unfortunately, it had rained the night before. The trails were muddy and flooded in places, so in the beginning we tried running on the rocks beside the trails. This led to a few rolled ankles and some very tired legs. Adam and I decided to meet up where the Ice Cave trail was, which didn't seem too far based on the trail markers. Oh, those markers are sooo wrong! I pushed myself onward to finally get to the trail junction, walking a good deal of the way. I found an arrow indicating that Adam had gone down the path, so I continued walking on that path for a really long time, hoping that he would be returning and I wouldn't have to move any farther.

We met up again right before the end of the trail and walked back to the junction. At this point it made more sense to continue the way we were going on Blue Ridge rather than turn back and go up the big hill again. We tried running for a little while and then ran out of water. Eventually it became too much and we began filtering water from puddles through our shirts. We repeated this when we found the creek, and eventually got back to the Springs Trail junction, where James had run back to find us. We'd been about two hours over due and neither of us had cell phones.

This little adventure really set me back. Messed up the IT band in the right leg, which hadn't even been a real problem until then. One month before the race, this was a pretty big concern now. :(

Much warmer day, this trail has a very easy grade but is frustrating in that it isn't very straight. The trail is very well maintained but the views are disappointing. That said the forest is very nice.

Also took the Ice Cave trail to check out the cave. A bit disappointing, not nearly as good as the lava tube in Flagstaff.

Mapped a couple of access trails for future hikers.

Saw clear pools in Billy Thompson Creek, but the creek was not flowing.

Nice day out, enjoyed the nice wooded views. Not really any panoramic views on these hikes, although both trails go around Scott Reservoir which is nice.

Took a look into the Ice Cave, nice cold air blasting out of there. Not much to see, though IMO inside.

Took the Osprey out to the Ice Cave Trail, then hiked from end to end of the Ice Cave and back to the Ice Cave-Osprey Junction to take the Osprey back out. So in other words we did an out and back on both trails, end to end.

Much of the route on the Ice Cave is used by the stables at the west TH, bringing groups along the trial on horseback. After all the recent snowmelt and the trail being muddy, it dried and the trail is rutted to pieces. It's chocked full of horse hoof holes, some of them 3-4 inches deep.

The Osprey was named for this bird, having a nesting area near Scott Reservoir when the trail was cut recently as a connector trail. I didn't see an osprey, but I played an osprey call distress sound and a redtail hawk started flying toward me and above me before taking off.

water 1 out of 5water 2 out of 5water 3 out of 5water 4 out of 5 Scott Reservoir 76-100% full 76-100% full
It was full, fuller than usual with all the snowmelt draining in there.

Went on a road trip with my wife and was looking for hike that we could both do. Thanks to HAZ mapping found the Ice Cave Trail that seemed to. Fit the bill. Wasn't sure at first, as soon as we got on the trail we got behind a group of horses. We gave them some time to get ahead of us and it was a non factor for the rest of the hike. The trail was nice and easy to follow, but to be honest we were never sure what trail we were on until we got 1.5 miles in on the hike. At that point we reached a "Y" in the trail. That was first signage that we saw that said what trails were what. (There were no maps at the TH and we had just done a brief read on the trail while we has wi-fi at the hotel), so we had gone in unprepared. There were quite a few side trails along the way, but as long as we followed the blue diamonds that were on the trees, we stayed on the correct trail. Once we got to the "Y", we had to stay on the Blue Ridge Trail dor about .5 miles until we reached the ice cave. There is a fence that surrounds the cave, but the gate was open, so my wife and I we able to reach the opening. It,s amazing how cool it gets in front of the opening!!!!! The weather was ideal. Not much wildlife, though the birds were quite active around Scott's Reservoir.

I did this hike with a great friend(Tom) of mine. The trail itself is 3.5 miles each way. There are no cairns but there are blue diamonds on the trees from time to time. The Ice Cave is a lttle off trail. The GPS showed it at 2.15 miles. There was a couple tiny streams running and good size one running to Scotts Res.The trail was almost dry from the snow storm a week or two ago.I read somwhere you shouldn't use the trail if it's to muddy. It wasn't but it looks like they did some horseback rides(when it was muddy) as far as the Ice Cave and the trail had Deep hoof prints EVERYWHERE [-X .It was great to get out on a trail and spend a little time with an old friend. Thanks Tom! :D

Did this hike the day after skiing at Sunrise Mtn. Slightly muddy conditions made for some cross country hiking, runoff from snow in the meadows produced lovely streams. According to a description (from another website) we should have found the ice cave shortly after passing by Scott Reservoir but it eluded us. Still a fun hike through the Sitgreaves NF.
