Early morning hike at Cave Creek. Once again I had to wait for the gates to open, so I didn’t get on the trail until after 6am. Pretty much as the sun came up. :? parked at the Slate TH and took that west. The Slate Trail is one of my favorite trails in the park. I love the rocky swirls that make up the mid section of the trail. The rocks have been worn down quite a bit from use, but you can still the patterns. I noted from the official gps route that this trail extends past the Cave Creek Wash into the neighborhood. I followed this route a couple of times over the years, but for me the Slate ends at the P. A. Seitts Military Trail. I took the Seitts Trail north to where it connects to the Flat Rock Trail. The Seitts is a nice trail and makes for a good loop. It starts out nice and flat, paralleling Cave Creek, before turning into the hills and doing some minor climbing. When you hit the Flat Rock Trail you are entering back into the park. (Approximately 1.5 miles on the Slate Trail you actually exit Cave Creek Preserve, so the Seitts Trail is completely outside of the preserve). The Flat Rock is a short trail and continues the climb started on the Seitts. The Flat Rock connects to the Quartz Trail and this is where the length of the loop can be extended or shortened. My preferred loop (as me taking the Quartz to the Go John and then taking the Go John back towards the TH.

Very enjoyable morning in the preserve. Temps were great. Wildlife was rabbits and quail. Trails weren’t too busy: couple of bikers, a runner and a couple of hikers. Long drive, but worth it.

Great loop with the Harem (Carey and Christina) this morning at Cave Creek Regional Park. Go John, Quartz, Military, and Slate trails. Saw one biker and a few hikers. Some puddles remain from last night's showers.

CCW loop from the P.A. Seitts TH without my back brace. I made a side trip up the Overlook Trail to visit Mrs. SloFolks bench before starting the loop. My original intent was to do 7-8 miles today but I started later than planned and had to 86 the Go John Trail from the loop. It got very warm when the sun came out. This is December, right?

Saw 1 hiker, 1 biker, 3 equestrians, and 2 doggos who were both very good boys.

My post surgery PT has been kicking my butt and I've been too sore to hike. I finally got out this morning and did a close to home CCW lasso loop starting from the P.A. Seitts TH. Quite a bit slower than what I used to do this in, but I'm thrilled that I made it 5 miles w/o my back brace. :)
Saw one trail runner and one equestrian. Beautiful weather.

First "real" hike since my back surgery and fusion. I was unable to enter the trail system through Surrey Hills and the newly named Legacy Trail due to a mountain bike race. Plan B was to enter from the south instead at the P.A. Seitts TH. Probably a blessing in disguise as the rocky 200' descent down from the Surrey saddle would have been tough on my back without my brace.

Lot's of downed saguaros which was sad to see. I made the little climb up the Overlook Trail to visit the future memorial bench of Mrs. SloFolk. Afterward I went north to the old cemetery. I found myself right in the middle of the bike race on the return south but most were friendly.

Another north valley hike on nicely groomed trails. Following rain last night ending this morning, we got going to cloudy breezy conditions. Trails were wet with some mud but easily avoided. Some light rain fell while we were hiking.
We hiked up Go John trail until we were into the clouds. Pretty cool.
The flora out here looks good and green, especially the saguaros.
Saw some deer, bunnies and birds.
Fun hike. Coffee, breakfast, and a quick stop to visit college friends after the hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Wanted to get a few miles in today so I imagine-hiked this in my head; I used to do that type of thing before competitions, especially o-mok-sees. It went okay today except I, for some reason, struggled up Go John when heading north. I was originally going to go in the AM but since I wasn't doing any significant elevation, I changed my mind and went in the afternoon. It was delightful.

I had to retrace my way back to the VC to download my podcasts as the internet didn't seem to work well at the parking lot. I went back to the lot and headed east on the Go John Trail. I haven't gone this way for a while but I was looking forward to it. Everything is just a tad longer and steeper than I remember but just right for me today. The trail tread was in decent condition so it was a pleasant journey as I got up the trail and around about three curves before topping out. I saw about 4 hikers toward the beginning and none until I reached the Jasper Trail.

I headed down and over to the Quartz Trail and then up and around this mountain. The trail was partially in shade off and on. It was another pretty day as I continued down via our beautiful desert decor. I enjoyed all the saguaros and golden grasses and the Ironwood Trees looked pretty good. I'm sure they're all looking forward to next week's rain🙏; I know I am. I passed by the quartz outcropping and down to the teddy bear cholla junction with the Slate Trail where I headed west.

The desert is still pretty awesome around here with very tall saguaros; altho there were a few fallen soldiers at this point :( . It makes you appreciate those that still remain and dominate the terrain; especially as you come to this one area that is a bit of a forest on the northside of the trail. I would see three people just before the Jasper Trail junction. The Jasper Trail is awful tread because of the horses and it has a slight uphill, deep dirt and rocks. Fortunately, it's short.

I arrived back at the parking lot and headed over to the Go John Trail which I normally enjoy. I saw another hiker who complained about avoiding the horse manure; I told her it didn't bother me. Another hiker passed me going up the hill. I was at mile four and suddenly, I started breathing hard and decided to pull over in the shade and sit for a moment. And then I started slowly up the trail but had to take my time.

Perhaps I should have rested more as I struggled up this and had to rest a couple times. I like this trail as I've been doing it for a long time and I still remember the first time back in 2006 I think it was. It seems they dropped a bunch of rocks for erosion control on a little bit of that last 1/2 mile, so that was quite annoying. I made it to the saddle and rested for just a moment on the bench. It's a great view.

From the saddle it is shaded most of the way until you arrive at the Overton junction. I was glad it was downhill since apparently, I seemed out of uphill steam. The Overton Trail is a fun trail with some nice switchbacks on the west side. The golden grasses at the top were certainly glowing. I tried to make up time from my uphill debacle. However, at the bottom I started to get really tired so I pulled out a Sport Bean and for whatever reason, that darn thing worked again. (I must get these sudden sugar drops so it doesn't seem to take much to bring me back.) The trail tread is pretty decent but it does take a little longer than you think to get around this west side before heading east. I ran into a couple hikers here.

Once again, the horse wear showed on this tread as it was sandy and deep. There were a couple little hills that fortunately were small enough not to slow me down too bad. And finally I rounded the corner and crossed the wash to join back up with the Go John to finish off my CCRA foray. I had started looking forward to my beer about a mile back; that keeps me going  and my pace is a tad quicker. But I still don't like that beer so the last four cans will be a Xmas present for someone.

CCW lasso loop starting from the new Legacy Trailhead (formerly the eastern extension Slate TH).
New parking spots are just off Cave Creek Rd. and Surrey Drive. Quick 90 foot climb up to the Surrey Hills saddle then a 200 foot drop down to the creek flood plain.

Note: Once you cross the creek the entirety of the Military Trail and portions of the Flat Rock and Slate Trails are on State Trust Land and a permit is required.

The cottonwood bosque areas along the creek are starting to show some fall colors. Only saw a handful of other hikers and it was very warm at the finish. Probably should have started an hour or so earlier.

I never got comfortable with "Picker" on HAZ so it's back to LosDosSloFolks. Cathy never really left me and will always be a part of me. It just took me a little time to understand that. :)

Cool mornings have finally arrived and it felt nice to get out in the desert. This close to home quickie never disappoints. Everything is still very dry but still looks healthy. I look forward to the creek flowing again.

Plan A was to go to Flagstaff today to leave some of MrsSloFolks ashes along the Walnut Canyon section of the AZT. I couldn't find any takers to go hike with me and didn't feel like going alone so this was Plan B.

It was cool enough this morning to head over to Go John Canyon on the State Trust Land east of the Cave Creek Regional Park. Cathy always liked this area along with the P.A. Seitts Preserve. Temps were nice for the duration and I had the place to myself. I think summer is on the way out. The creek crossing is getting overgrown with invasive Tamarisk (Salt Cedar). ](*,) It's going to be a big task to eradicate it.

Nice early morning hike with my sister. Got on the trail around 6am. We made a loop involving Slate - Military - Flat - Quartz - Go John - and Jasper. Nice loop with easy elevation gain. First time my sister has been to this preserve. Always nice introducing a new trail to someone, especially family. Good conversations. :) Noticed an unnamed side trail going south off the Slate soon after the Jasper junction. There was a bench just in, on that user trail. Didn’t get a chance to check it out, but definitely will on my next visit.

Pre-dawn start to beat the heat. Hiked from home to the "Slate" TH @ the Surrey Hills saddle. We have learned that this 1.25 mile section of the Slate trail running through the P.A. Seitts preserve to the creek is now called the "Legacy" trail. Also, the extension of the Menk Nature Trail going up to the top of the little hill is now called the "Overlook" trail as per the Desert Foothills Land Trust.

Cathy wasn't feelin' it so she ate her PB&J while I went up the Overlook. We met up back at the saddle and returned home. Nice little hike to end April.

Deborah had come to town to retreive her RV from storage to take it back home to Flathead Lake. She stayed at Usery for a couple nites before heading up to Cave Creek Regional Park for a couple nites. So I put together a little hike we could do. She had hiked in the area last year. I picked her and Duke up and we headed out from Go John parking area.

We hiked up Go John and then hung a left at Clay Mine Trail and on to Overton. There were a couple bike riders that took off at the same time (counterclockwise up Go John/down Overton) and we would see them as we started on the Overton. The Overton still afforded us some shade so that was nice. We passed a group that were with a ranger apparently doing the flora tour. We would encounter a few other hikers as we headed up to the north saddle. The breeze also seemed to pick up and stayed with us for the hike off and on :) .

I did notice some wildflowers on our hike including a couple Delphinium, several Tansy Aster, lots of Buckwheat, a couple Mariposa Lilys, a few Desert Trumpets and some waning Owl Clover as well as others I'm not sure of. As we hiked south up the Go John I pointed out to Deborah where the old trail went before the reroute in 2007 (it used to go right next to the mine on the north side). Going down the hill always seems a little longer than I anticipate as there is an extra switchback in there that I forget about.

The gusty breeze really picked up as we got further down the hill. We almost got blown over by a big gust of wind and dust. I decided it was still cool enough to continue the hike so we headed east on the Go John and hooked up with Jasper to Slate. We stopped by the Michelin Saguaro. I didn't realize there was a bench with a little trail there; I guess I hadn't gone this way in a while. We also saw a couple bunnies cross the trail. We continued east up and down through the little gullies before arriving at the Quartz Junction where we sat at the bench, had a snack and enjoyed the view. The teddy chollas were starting to bloom. Oh, Duke was now a dusty Duke (he's a small black dog).

We headed on back only seeing two other hikers as we continued on the Slate Trail rather than taking Jasper. We did notice a couple saguaros with some blooms. We got back to Tonto 3 and then drove to the covered picnic area to have a beer. The ocotillos were blooming prolificly in this area.

Solo hike close to home. Early start and my first mile was in the dark and it was downright chilly at the creek. The desert was still putting on a decent bloom-a-palooza and the creek was running strong. :y:

As I was descending on the Quartz Trail I saw a mountain bike coming up from below. He was really movin' and was still sitting down. I thought what a beast that guy is until I heard the whine of the motor on his e-bike. Those aren't allowed on this trail system but I guess the rules don't apply to everyone.

Second hike using my new shoes and they felt pretty good. They have a nylon shank which really helped out on the rocky sections of the trail. I arrived home just as Mrs. SloFolks was getting up. It's been a little while since I've been on a trail and it felt good and I'm pleased with my pace after the layoff.

I was surprised to see how long the spring bloom has lasted up here. The Brittlebush, Desert Marigold, Creosote, Hedgehog, Prickly Pear, Flat Top Buckwheat, and Ocotillo were all going strong.

After breakfast hike from home over the Surrey Hills saddle to the Slate TH and then down to the Menk Trail. Someone installed some fake birds in a Palo Verde tree on the summit of the little overlook hill . They looked real until you got close. :(

After the Menk trail we bush whacked over to the creek to check out the flow after the flood of a few days ago. It's crossable but still almost knee high in most places. Fresh debris was easily 5 feet high in the tamarisk branches. The bosque area trees are leafing out and the wildflowers were substantial but still nowhere near their peak which is yet to come. The Brittlebush, Owl Clover, and Desert Globemallow are coming on strong.

After breakfast we decided to cross the creek on foot while we still could before the rain to get in one of our close to home loops. The creek was running pretty strong but with waterproof shoes we had no problem finding a way across.

Wildflowers were really starting to pop but no Brittlebush yet even though the desert is loaded with it. It will be a sea of yellow up here in a week or two.

Met a fellow named Craig on the Go John Trail who was with the Desert Foothills Land Trust and we hiked with him for a couple of miles and had some good conversation. We also got in some great petting with two good horses and two good dogs. :)

A Mystery Solved :y:
The highlight of the hike was solving the mystery of a spring box that @tibber found during a hike with Cathy, @trekkin_gecko , and @LindaAnn . The box had a 8" diameter pipe in the bottom that made no sense at all.

We did some sleuthing and found the pipe exiting the ground in some nearby trees and we followed it to an old underground pump house just off the flood plain of the creek. The 12 by 12 foot pump house had a well and a kerosene engine to pump water up to the box for horses and cattle. The old corral on the Military Trail is nearby so this made sense. You don't need that much pump and pipe to fill a 8 foot shallow cement box so I'm guessing there was also some irrigating going on for crops back in the day. The word "well" is even on one of the HAZ topo maps of the area on Route Scout. 👍 I didn't find that until just now while writing this log. Photos in photoset.

Exercise hike from home over to Cave Creek to see if the flow had receded enough to be crossed. It has. :)
Quite a bit more Lupine blooming since this past Sunday. Added the little climb up the Menk Nature Trail for some extra gain.
