A quick relatively short wandering loop, in which our main goal was to avoid other hikers and equestrians as much as possible. With but a few detours we were successful in reaching our goal. But then again, when hiking mostly off-trail, every step can be part of a detour around an obstacle.

Actually, we did this hike in two parts:
An .8 mile round-trip trail-maintenance hike, followed by a separate 2.4 mile lasso-loop from the Phon D Sutton Mid Mountain Parking Lot (PDSMMPL)

1. We began from a point about a quarter-mile West of PDSMMPL along Phon D Sutton Road. The reason for this part of the hike was to remove a very freshly-fallen Saguaro from the equestrian trail, which I encountered while on my usual mountain-biking route yesterday.
Having done maintenance like this in the past, sometimes without enough, or the best tools for the job, I went slightly overboard... loading my backpack with a reciprocating saw complete with 20-volt battery and assorted saw blades, and carrying an axe which of course would not fit in the pack. Tracey, on the other hand, went light, just carrying her new 10" folding pruning saw. (If memory serves correctly she received it possibly for donating to the AZT??)
Whatever, we set off on our short journey... I was glad it was short, as my hip joints were squawking all the way, mostly due to carrying the extra weight without any limbering of the limbs warm-up.
At the fallen Saguaro I meant to take a before photo but was so happy to drop the extra weight I totally forgot. At least I got a few after pics.
Tracey set to work cutting off three short pieces of the Saguaro with her SHARP saw so was done in minutes.
I probably SHOULD have gone for the reciprocating saw but since I wasn't sure the longest blade would go all the way through in one cut, I proceeded to cut it with the axe, which was already in-hand. After cutting it on either side of the trail, I rolled it out of the way and we set off back to the car, mission accomplished.

2. We drove back to PDSMMPL, where we set off on a second hike Eastward, first along an old wild-horse 'trail' (which has since become part of my regular MTB route) all the way to Coon Bluff Road, where we checked the rain gauge (0.11" overnight) before heading toward the Coon Bluff Horse Staging lot, and ultimately back to PDSMMPL. My hips were still squawking so we called it a day and headed home.

Chris invited me on this quick Christmas Eve hike along a couple trails at the Lower Salt River.

I've done the Coon Bluff Loop several times, but not the Salt River Trail which is a mostly flat trail that skirts Coon Bluff and then heads across the open desert towards Salt River Recreation.

A little chilly at the start, but once the sun came out, it was very pleasant.

An easy day out in the desert, with a flat out and back and then the up and down you get going on the Coon Bluffs.

On the trail heading back to the TH, we ran into the @cannondalekid who was biking the same trail going the opposite direction. It was a pleasure to meet you!

A nice way to spend Christmas Eve morning, out in the desert, getting a little exercise and breathing in that fresh air. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!

Andy and I did a quick hike Xmas Eve morning close to home to get a few miles in. Started from the Phon D Sutton mid lot and hiked the Salt River 100 Trail out to its terminus and came back, then hiked the Coon Bluff Loop, or at least most of it. There are several other unmarked trails all around Coon Bluff. We just did most of the crestline and then looped around the bottom. We lost the trail at first following the track I downloaded but found the actual trail eventually. On the last stretch we saw a biker coming the other way and it turned out to be @CannondaleKid . We stopped and talked a bit. He and Andy had never met, but Andy has used many of Mark's tracks over the years and was happy to meet him.

We started just after 6am and hiked the first hour in the dark and cold. Once the sun hit us, things warmed up very quickly. We got sidetracked at one point in the dark not being able to see the trail very well. It was funny on the way back how different everything looks when you can see. Finished up around 10:30am, nice to get out on the holiday and enjoy the nice weather.

Not a great start to the day... the front tire was totally flat.
](*,)
Yup, I'm sure the goat-heads I encountered the previous ride had something to do with the issue. But then again, the front tire has traveled over 2300 miles, has likely been poked by tens-of-thousands of thorns and has used up a half-dozen bottles of sealer, so I think its time has come.
Thankfully I had a tire just waiting for just this day, and wonder-of-wonders, unlike my three-hour battle to replace the rear tire a few months back, this replacement was almost too easy and I was done with it filled with sealer in less than 15 minutes.
:y:

The Ride:
With the relative humidity in the mid 50% range I really didn't feel like a long ride today but with only 81° and a nice breeze I figured I'd keep going and see how it turned out.
Good thing I did, as not only would the humidity quickly drop into my 'pleasant zone' but my ride would turn out to provide quite an adventure.

And for quite the adventure, I suppose I should add an appropriate title:
Wild cats, lively horses and a NOT-so-lively horse

I began just west of the intersection of Bush Highway/Coon Bluff Road, riding west near the fence line along Bush Highway then following old horse trails out to Phon D Sutton Recreation Area, continuing and extended out-and-back on Lower Salt River Interpretive Trail #6, and back to the car along the same route.

As quickly as the humidity had dropped without an increase in temperature (thanks to continuing overcast skies) once back at the car I decided to extend the ride. After a quick stop to swap one of two quart bottles for a still nearly-frozen bottle, and grabbing an extra frozen 17 oz bottle, because by now I had a feeling the ride would go on-and-on-and-on.

A quick sprint down Coon Bluff Road to the equestrian gate and I was riding eastward on the Salt River Trail #100. As usual, out in this area I rarely stick with the trail and meander whenever and wherever something of interest catches my attention.

With so many horse trails out along the Salt River I've likely never ridden the same route more than once so there's always something new, and today would continue in that same vein.

As I approached the Goldfield Recreation Site I realized I should make a quick detour to avoid the wafting odors from the restrooms... WHEW! So a quite shot down the ramp to the tubing recovery area and continued my ride westward along the tubing service road. This area includes a variety of terrain to ride along... fine river rock, egg-to-avocado-sized smooth river rock, fine sand, even finer silty-sand, rough gravel and back-and-forth.

Just as I was rounding the bend adjacent to the 'Mud Cliffs' across the Salt River I spotted something of great interest up ahead... a large wild cat of some kind! Currently riding on egg-sized rocks was not a quite proposition so I quickly jumped off, grabbed my camera and started walking fast to catch up before it went out-of-sight. As big as it was and how thick the tail was for a split-second I thought "mountain lion" but the ears were not rounded. A moment later I spotted the black ear tufts so I was confident it was a bobcat. But oh man, of the bobcats I'd spotted before in Arizona, this one was BIG! 40+ pounds or more?

I got off two quick photos before realizing the zoom of 'biking camera' was a bit limited so I ran back, got back on my bike and proceeded carefully, camera in one hand and handlebar in the other (not easy on a rocky surface), hoping to get closer without spooking it completely, as so far it seemed oblivious to my presence. And then it stopped... as did I, although I'd made enough noise it turned around and looked directly at me. Wow, what a perfect shot!
But stopping, getting off the bike and focusing the camera took a split-second too long and I MISSED the shot! Although the bobcat nonchalantly continued on its way, it simply would not turn around while I was ready for it.

Back on the bike and just as the bobcat passed some brush it turned off to the side, sat down under a tree and looked directly at me. Knowing the moment would quickly pass I tried to take a photo while still moving but again the camera was too slow and all I got was a blur and a moment later the cat was gone. Oh well, at least a got a few halfway decent photos of it.

Moving along... next I would encounter varying sized groups of Salt River Horses on either side of the track. Having encountered them literally hundreds of times I didn't plan to take any additional photos... until one particularly feisty gray-maned horse started causing a ruckus with almost any horse in the vicinity so of course I had to stop and start filming. For a bit I thought it would be never-ending but eventually cooler heads prevailed and that was the end of it. I missed the start of it but it was enough:
Lively Salt River Horses

Continuing on, I spotted large flock of turkey vultures circling, which made me decided to pay another visit to the remains a dead horse. It had been hit by a car on North Usery Pass Road near the corner on the way out to the Goldfield Recreation Area on Sunday September 18th at around 1:30 AM. As usual on this road, no matter what time of day or night the cars are going WAY too fast, and this one crippled the horse so it was quickly euthanized, and later relocated about 500 feet off the road to allow for 'returning to nature'.
Another reason for that was for safety for the rest of the band of horses it had been a part of as they tend to return to the corpse and, in-a-sense, 'pay their respects' to the dead. Since the band included a young foal, the relocation would help protect future generations.

Although I'd already racked up a dozen miles by now I continued southward completely off-trail and parallel to Usery Pass Road all the way up(hill) to the Maricopa Trail crossing, along Wild Horse Trail, down Stinger East, some more completely off-trail riding over to Bush Highway and back to the car along the fence line east of and parallel to Bush Highway.

Whew! With this long ride I've ridden over 1500 miles for 2022, which has already surpassed my total miles for 2021.

I didn't have the energy to stay out all night, so I did a morning hike. I barely had the energy for that, but I have a job to do.

I found three snakes, all small. The dback seemed a little dehydrated. I gave it some water. I found the very skinny coachwhip. I thought it was dead until it started to strike at me. It didn't even try to slither away. I gave it some water. I don't think it drank enough but it did stop drinking. Perhaps it might need to eat also. I hope it makes it.

Took the coon bluff loop to check out the sunrise - wish there'd been clouds and drama. Walked around along the river and saw some horses. Beautiful day with family.

With temps in the 65-70° range it was absolutely perfect weather!

Since much of the new Bush Lite East Trail was semi-complete by the previous Saturday I knew the folks from HTA (Hawes Trail Alliance) would be out working on it again this Saturday (yesterday). If things went well they just might have completed the whole trail so I figured I'd add a quick out-and-back ride in addition to my usual route.

The Mid-Mountain parking lot along Bush Highway had over a half-dozen vehicles and well over a dozen people were mingling about, probably readying for a hike. Although they were outside, neither social distancing nor masks were in evidence. But no matter, I just rode by.

As I approached the horse staging lot on Coon Bluff Road it was as full as I'd ever seen. I attempted to count them all as I rode through but I lost count at 21 horse trailers. (I think there were a couple more behind others.) Thankfully all the equestrians were already out on various trails so I didn't have to leave a wide berth around any of them.

While riding in an open area heading toward Usery Pass Road it seemed like I had to avoid 10 times as many horse-apples as the previous ride. Pretty weird... until I figured out why. The Salt River Management Group has regularly dropped off hay for the feral horses for most of the year. Each time it has always been dropped in one area, but for some reason in the last week they dropped it off in much larger area. Which of course that means there are horse-apples over much larger area. Oh well, I'll just adjust my route a bit farther from Trail 100.

As usual I stopped at three separate viewpoints overlooking the Salt River and was surprised by how the amount of algae has exploded... a few weeks ago there was none.

Moving on to Bush Lite East... I crossed Bush Highway at the Scorpion Trail and right away I could see the pink flags marking the trail. Although this part had been pretty well done last week, I could tell a bit more housekeeping had been done and there was not a hazard to be found. Wow, this is a NICE trail! The only complaint I had was that most of the hard ground areas had small undulations which play havoc for my herniated disk. I can deal with the whoop-de-doo's and the larger rocks easy enough by staying off the seat, but I don't care to do the whole ride standing up.

When I reached the west end of Bush Lite East there were markers for EAST Bush Lite but no has begun construction yet. However, the short connector over to Stinger West IS complete. In the future, it will continue in a larger clockwise arc, crossing Stinger a second time and reconnecting with Bush Lite West and will be named Bush Lite Loop.

I turned around at Stinger and began the ride in the other direction. I hadn't gone a few hundred yards before meeting another biker, who was in fact one of the HTA workers. He told me they just completed the trail less than an hour earlier and he was riding it the first time. Ha! I had already ridden it and was heading back the other way, so not only was I the first to ride the full Bush Lite East trail but first to ride in both directions.

Although the trail rises steadily from east to west, I actually liked it slightly more than west to east. I hope to get back out again tomorrow and film it in both directions with my GoPro.

The [ gps route ] I posted includes the Bush Lite East Trail and a separate track for the short connector to Stinger West. I suppose if/when I get around to creating a Guide maybe it will be the official route.

First ride for Tracey in quite some time, maybe a couple years? Probably getting jealous of my recent biking adventures in the area.
I kept the route more-or-less flat and easy with a stop at a nice Salt River overlook... hopefully pleasing enough she'd be up for more biking again.

With the weather so cool (67°) and dry I decided for a bit of an extended ride.

The ride from Phon D Sutton mid-mountain lot was a breeze so I was a bit in-a-hurry as I approached the gate on the north/west side of Coon Bluff Road so I didn't stop at it and instead just bumped it open then biked on through, letting the gate clang shut loudly. Barely a minute later I heard the approach of galloping horses and as I came around a batch of trees the herd of Salt River Wild Horses pull up just in front of me in a cloud of dust.

It appeared they were so used to the loads of hay being regularly delivered by a truck coming through the gate that the sound of the gate was a reaction like Pavlov's Dog... clang the gate and it's time to eat.

Unfortunately I didn't get my camera out fast enough to catch the full approach on video, but I did get them milling about trying to figure out why they lost out on some fresh hay.
Wild Horses Expecting Hay (1:30 video)

Moving on, as part of stretching the ride out I spent a good part of the ride along the Salt River-bottoms where the soft sand really served up a solid workout.

After that I headed across Bush Highway for a quick run halfway up-and-back on the Scorpion Trail, re-crossed Bush, cruised down to reconnect with the Salt River Trail #100, back across Coon Bluff Road (not clanging the gate this time) and back to the start.

Another great day for a ride.

Early run on a cool morning. Expanded my flip-flop-lasso double-figure-eight route to incorporate a regular run out to two separate Salt River overlooks. On the way back from one of the overlooks I spotted a reasonably healthy-looking coyote who didn't bother to pose for a picture.

Nearing the end I cruised through the Coon Bluff Recreation Area then headed back out parallel with the road along an equestrian trail, which used to be a wild horse trail this side of the road but no more.

Just as I turned back onto the road I spotted a Galaxy Note 8 cell phone laying in the dirt next to the road. Although the screen was so dark I could hardly see what was on the screen, after pushing a few buttons I could vaguely see "Natalie's Phone" and a green circle labeled "Call owner of phone", which I did.

Natalie lived within a few miles of me so I said I'd drop it off on my way home. She called back and said to meet at a Chase Bank where she had gone to get cash to give me a finders' reward because she was so grateful "my LIFE is on that phone!"
Word to the (un)wise... have a backup!

I said I'd meet her there but don't bother with any reward, I'm happy to get it back to the rightful owner. (which hasn't been the case for two previous phones I've found)

All's well that ends well I guess.

Nice cool morning, 72°... just right for a leisurely bike ride.

Started off in a poor frame-of-mind due to evidence of an ATV driving over the angled metal bar on the gate at the Phon D Sutton Mid-Mountain parking lot and continuing a half-mile north then west past the caged mine and partway down the wash toward the Salt River between Phon D Sutton and Coon Bluff. ](*,)
Since I saw no tracks when I was out here Sunday morning it most likely happened Sunday afternoon or later.

Later in the week my assumption would be corroborated by a couple who hike the area daily. They would also tell me the ATV went up and the hill straight west of the parking area, tearing up the tread of the trail while making the footing even more treacherous than previously.

To regain a better frame-of-mind I rode out to a few different Salt River overlooks but the semi-euphoria lasted only until I crossed Bush Highway to ride a ways on the Scorpion Trail, where I saw where the same ATV had squeezed its way through the small arch which was so mountain bikers could avoid going through the gate... [-(
Anyway, the tracks continued about an eight-mile before heading off along the remnants of an ancient road which led up to the gravel pits, but for many years had been a wild horse trail, but no more since the wild horses no longer have access.

I turned around 1/2 way up Scorpion, took a quick run downhill back to Bush (one 18 mph burst was all the trail conditions allowed), crossed Bush, another quick and more sustained run until reconnecting with Salt Trail #100 and back to the start.

Although a bit bummed by the evidence of an ATV going where it doesn't belong, it didn't dampen the overall pleasantness of the ride.

Gotta give props on the triplog Ray... I couldn't have said it better. :app:

When I read I was in no hurry to leave. It was just about perfect in your triplog, I must admit that particular spot was the perfect spot to set a spell, relax and take in the idyllic river scene.

Having visited that spot a dozen or more times over the last 6 months (usually on a workout hike) it didn't occur to me an extended break would have been appropriate... sorry about that Ray!

Still, it was a nice leisurely hike... I enjoyed the weather and the company.
Thanks again Ray!

Mark and I were set to head to the Mazzies to check out a Swingset. An overnight low of 64 degrees made us consider a local hike instead. This little dandy was quite fun.

We started at the Phon D Sutton mid-mountain parking lot along the Bush Highway and proceeded west along the Coon Bluff Loop trail for a short distance. From there, we followed a loop Mark cobbled together from past hikes, which took us up and over most of the hills in the area while following a clockwise route. Not 10 minutes into the hike, I got my usual tumble and fall out of the way, stepping on what looked like a sturdy rock, only to have it work loose, and down I went onto my backside. Thankfully my water bladder was full and cushioned my fall, leaving me just a little embarrassed.

After dropping down into a wash that would connect us to the next hill, we ran into a snake wrangler from North Dakota, maybe down here to escape the cold front moving through that area. He wasn't having any luck. We surmised that the surprisingly cool weather may have had something to do with it.

We then hiked up and over the next hill down to the river, where we saw a couple of wild horses wading in the river before running into a couple of fishermen. Leaving the river and hiking up the next hill, we stopped for a few minutes on the ridge and watched folks on kayaks and paddle boards drifting down the river. As a group of paddle boarders passed by, a small group of wild horses set out across the river from the north. We stood and watched, letting a cool breeze wash over us. I was in no hurry to leave. It was just about perfect.

We headed down Coon Bluff towards the Coon Bluff recreation area before circling back and returning to the TH. Along the way we stopped at an old mine just up the hill. Nothing more than a big hole in the ground now.

The weather was about perfect. Nice and cool throughout. Maybe a tad humid, but no complaints here. It was a great day to be out.

Good seeing you again, Mark!

Early start, not too humid, nice breeze, off-trail from Bush to Scorpion Alley, looping back along Scorpion and the Salt River Trail #100.

Early start, humid enough but it was ok as long as I was moving.

Not as muggy as yesterday but even starting shortly after sunrise I was soaked within an hour of biking.

I got a chance to try out my new bike rack. I've used a homemade bike rack for 10+ years which worked great except for the need to remove the front tire on the bike(s) to secure them onto the rack. So I thought I'd see how well a rack with tire baskets would work.

I believe it will work well... AFTER a few modifications. It's too far away from the car and too low so even some distance back the tire holder is in line behind the exhaust. I got a quick wake-up call when I happened to touch the metal rail. When I felt the rear tire it was pretty hot as well... not good!

The quick fix was to cut, raise and shorten the receiver bar so now it's higher and closer to the car. I bolted it together temporarily to make sure it works before welding it permanently. I'll probably be out again tomorrow to make sure the exhaust issue is resolved.

Terribly muggy compared to yesterday's afternoon ride so I cut it short. Within two miles I was already drenched with sweat so it wasn't "a breeze" by any stretch of the imagination today.

But no matter, I'm still liking biking more than hiking in the hot/humid conditions.

Too muggy earlier so waited until noon and was treated to a somewhat dry (18% RH) ride, which made it a comfortable breeze of a ride, with the added result of shaving 15 minutes off the last time I rode this same route.
:y:
Side note: Due to the huge amount of sealer I put in the front tire I'll put off replacing the tire until it simply won't hold air. Even though all around the circumference of the center of the tread is wet with sealer the next day, it loses only a few pounds so I'm sticking with it.

Another muggy day so biking it is. Started from Coon Bluff horse staging, over and back to Phon D Sutton staging, over to the tubing lot, up Usery Pass Road to Wild Horse, through NRA sand pits, down Scorpion to Bush, along Bush to Coon Bluff Road and back to the start.
Less-than enjoyable was the 2 mile 600' ascent up Usery Pass Road... puff, puff
But that quickly changed to the most enjoyable long downhill run along Scorpion Trail back to Bush Highway.
Only a bit of effort on Bush back to Coon Bluff Road followed by the quick blast back to the start.
