The delayed cloud cover and rain was a nice and unexpected bonus. We didn't have time to tag Maricopa Peak, which was fine since we just did it in late March.

Had some Real Estate business to take care of over in Laveen off of Ansell. Decided to do my hike from the trailhead right there. I was planning on doing about 6 miles today but the weather was decent so it ended up being a little over 11. :D Nice day and didn't see a soul except for one guy at the trailhead.

Finished off all of SoMo's official trails by adding on the uninspiring west section of the Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter to the classic Alta-Bajada Loop. Poppies are popping within blankets of Lesquerella arizonica.

I maintain some geocaches in the western area of South Mountain, and one of them needed checking on. Did a little round trip out there with musicdebbi to check the status. This one appears, but is not named, on the official trail map. The trail here is easily followed, and tracks along the ridgetop with great views of the Sierra Estrellas and White Tanks, as well as the nearby farms. Parked at the Curtis Saddle Trailhead at the end of W. Estrella Road and climbed up to near the end of the San Juan Road, and then followed the ridge top out to the end of the path and my geocache.

Hiked a big loop starting on Bursera. Went west on National, up Alta, then hit Maricopa Peak. Descended Alta to Bajada going east to Ranger. Hiked up Ranger to the National, went up to Goat Hill, then down Lost Mine and back to the trailhead.
Only saw a dozen people until the last mile. Some wildflowers out there, but nothing too exciting.
Weather was great, cool and breezy. Jogged a little. Only drew blood once. :)

Figured out I hadn’t driven south of Baseline Rd on Central since about 2004 my second year in Arizona, didn’t recall ever seeing Scorpion Gulch before! Came here to hike some more South Mountain Trails that were new to me with my trusty guide @LindaAnn. Arrived at the almost full “parking lot” about 0830 and started quickly after. Went up to the Max Delta Mine area right away since I had requested it. Not too many picture opportunities unless your into graffiti art. Kicked around a few rocks and then not finding any large gold nuggets headed down to the Bajada Trail. Linda kindly suggested we do this loop the easier clockwise direction instead of the CCW direction she takes her children on :? There were low expectations advised for the Bajada Trail so it didn’t seem too bad . I was surprised to see how close we were getting to the casino and 202 before turning back east. She avoided the neighborhood where reportedly resides a fellow curmudgeon, had hoped to pick up some tips on keeping kids off my lawn :D This is definitely the less busy side of the park, on taking a break at the San Juan Lookout shelter we encountered our first humans of the day , two bike riding ladies circled by. Observed this shelter to be a poor choice in rainy weather or for shade either since it’s lacking a roof. After snacking and solving the worlds problems the energizer bunny was getting restless so it’s on to the Alta Trail toward Maricopa Peak . Wearing glasses causes problems with depth perception ,so I don’t wear them to reduce falling potential , so when Linda pointed out Maricopa Peak I was concerned about not being able to observe a trail to the peak .Turns out instead of rock climbing there was a route to take to the top. Nice 360° views from the top of the Ma Ha Tauk ridgeline , air was clearer than expected for viewing Phoenix and Laveen and Petroleum tanks! Was hoping to hear there was a secret easy way to descend but we left the same way gotta love those steep loose rock descents. I had it in mind that the peak was the high point of the route , as we continued on Alta it sure seemed like we were still heading up, so I queried about this development , distracting tactics were then deployed such as pointing out landmarks and was finally told it was just a peculiar aspect of the Alta Trail in this section , kind of like an optical illusion ?? Anyway after a couple more breathless “optical illusions “ we were finally heading down off the ridgeline on a nice section of Alta Trail to complete the loop at Bajada. Linda pointed out several Busera Trees that were struggling to leaf out and a sort of crested or mutant saguaro. A little warm at times when the breeze disappeared but otherwise a pleasant day with pleasant company. Thanks Linda for recommending this route , Alta Trail and the peak were the highlight, nice to experience the western end of the park and National Trail , only have a couple more trails to do on South Mountain.

Met Tom at the "triangle lot" around 0830. Quick stop to check out the Max Delta Mine at the start--glass and graffiti everywhere--then west on Bajada. I had warned Tom that Bajada is a bit dull, really it's just a way to loop either National or Alta, and there were no complaints. Of course, the far west end of National isn't exciting either, but it's easy hiking. Tom was concerned that we were going to walk all the way to the 202.

Took a break at San Juan Lookout before starting the real point of the hike. Up to this point, we had seen nobody else, but saw two bicyclists while at the lookout, then three hikers at the beginning of Alta, and that was it for the day. The hike up was steep in places, and warm, but an occasional breeze helped. At the saddle, we made the side trip over to Maricopa Peak, then continued east on Alta. I kept promising that the uphill of the hike was over, but Alta still seems to climb in places along the ridge. Once we were truly heading downhill, the breeze faded away, but going downhill was enough of a reward. Took a look at the crested/mutated saguaro at one of the switchbacks. Short hike back east on Bajada to get back to the vehicles.

Pleasant hike, despite the dullness of Bajada/National. If Alta was closer to the Ahwatukee side of the park, I would hike it a lot more often. Good to see Tom again--thanks for joining me!

Great weather for a hike. That first climb heading up Alta woke me up. The great views kept me awake for the remainder of the hike.

Out enjoying the pre-storm mild weather by doing a clockwise loop from the gate parking area on the San Juan Road. I haven't done this particular hike itself in 4 years. Bajada is pretty quiet, and with the dry January, I think it won't be busy for flowers this year.

It's been four years since I last did the Alta Bajada loop. I was in the area for the NTT shirt pick up anyway. Last time I did Bajada first, this time I did Alta first. It was a cool morning but warm in the sun. I saw the created saguaro this time. I missed it last time -- it's a lot more obvious going this direction. Stopped off at the top of Maricopa Peak to check out the view and rest a bit after the climb. Then back along Bajada which was a lot more tiring than going the other way around. All in all a good day on the trail.

The only other time I did this loop was over 17 years ago. :o I guess I'm getting old now. And I've been living out here for quite some time now. It's been so long that I really don't have many memories at all of this, especially the Alta Trail. the only thing I really remember from then is that it was springtime and the grasses and vegetation were pretty thick and I had a rash on my shins and calves that lasted for over a month.

I was hoping to add some spurs to this loop to add some mileage, but the only one I did was to Maricopa Peak. There's a trail there, but it's rough, so it's still kind of like going off trail. That took some time, so I really only did the loop. I did hike up to the other two nearby little peaks, since I was up there already. On Maricopa Peak, I saw two other hikers approaching from the east ridge, which appears to be completely off trail. The got to the peak as I was heading over to the other nearby "twin" peak. I could hear their voices and I thought they were making their way over there as well and maybe making a loop back onto the Alta Trail somewhere, but as I headed further westward, they were gone. The one hiker had a hood on. I've been hiking with a hooded t-shirt now for over a year for sun protection on my neck and ears, so I was surprised to see another hiker sporting the same look. 8)

The Alta Trail was really nice. the ascent in the morning was nice because I started from the San Juan Trailhead, deliberately to stay on the west side of the ridge and avoid the sun during the hardest part of the hike. Good plan. Even with the views into downtown Phoenix, I really like the scenery up there. The ascent was moderately strenuous, and I was in the mood for more by the time I was descending. : rambo :

The Bajada Trail is a kind of a slog, especially after being up on the Alta. It's level, but it's not. Lots of ups and downs through the washes, and lots of loose rock to negotiate through that. :x The National Trail was a little better to walk. I noticed the junction with the Maricopa Trail not far from the San Juan TH.

Temps were cool at the start, typically hotter by the time I finished, but not too bad. Saw a few other hikers, but not many. This time of year probably keeps most people away.

Yes, I was hiking with the gazelles today but they were moseying on my account I'm sure so I appreciated not being left too far behind as bait . It was a nice morning for my fifth time hiking in South Mountain Park.

Alta Trail from east side The hike starts off on a very slight incline until it starts going up the side of a mountain switching back and forth in a very nice and pleasant grade. Linda led the way and was keeping a very moderate pace as we made our way up to a bit of a ridge crossing on both sides of it. She pointed out some items of interest and Denny showed us his favorite tree as it appears a few times along here. I heard the group speaking about someone down below but I thot they were talking about any hiker, I didn't realize they were talking about John9L and suddenly he was at my six as they say. He was breathing hard though as he had made quite the effort to get caught up as he had started on the wrong trail.

And now there were four ducks in a row hi ho, hi ho....oh wait, that's dwarfs, hi ho, hi ho (channeling my inner Joe Bartels :D ) We continued along the upper side before crossing over to the north side with views of the city and ahead to the Estrella. You could see the peak right in front of you and I thot, not too far but then John informed me we would be going all the way around and up the back side. Well shoot. And now we're going down and down and back up and then down again before we finally just continued up the back side. Todd did a little stop for me to catch my breath during all this.

Finally we arrive at the saddle looking at the west side of Maricopa Peak and a ridgeline hike up slightly to it. So over we went, John was already there by the time we got done chatting at the saddle. The view from the saddle is 360 so it's pretty nice. We made our way over to the peak and up on top. We hung out for longer than I thot they would. Chumley fixed Joe's hat (my hat) as the rim had separated from the body. They each took the opportunity to see what they would look like in the hat [ photo ] with great results I think.

And now to get down from here and down and down and down. We paused at the saddle to make some observations and then started the switchbacks to the valley floor... This took awhile as the footing is not the best in some areas and it's just a longer trek than it looks from the saddle. We encountered quite a few hikers on the way, passed one group on their way down otherwise everyone was headed up. We reached the bottom and headed southish on the National Trail. From here it is a slog just as promised. As we were going thru this one section, Chumley mentioned something about buffalo.

We took a break at the big wash where I explained that there aren't any buffalo here, it would be bison :) . Todd warned me that for the last two miles there was 300 feet of negligible elevation gain and he was sure right. I mostly noticed it because I was a little tired. I still don't have my stamina up to where I would like it and I think that's just a matter of consistently hiking more higher mileage hikes. John took off and I didn't see him until we got back to the TH. Soon Linda and Chumley also built up space between me and Denny. Denny was kind enough to hang back which was nice as the conversation made those two miles go by faster and easier. It's actually not a bad grade but it seemed a bit warm, even with the breeze.

Finally we crossed over the wash and to the cars. While having some Tibber snacks and a beer and gatorade I shared, we saw a hang glider in the distance and watched him sail with the wind until he didn't and he came to the ground. It was a good hike but I agree with the others, an out and back to the Peak via Alta would be the preferred route. I thot the hike to the Peak was pretty cool, especially the first up on the Alta to that ridge.

Thx Todd for putting this together. It was great to finally hike with Linda for the first time altho I feel like I somewhat knew her already. And good to catch up with John and Denny too. The drive on 7th St from the freeway to the Park is always interesting too. And as promised, a video of the hike and some hang glider at the end. The new stabilization on youtube starts the pics out a little blurry and then brings them into focus. It didn't used to do that so hopefully they'll get enough complaints. Update, I learned that it was my slide transitions that caused the focus issues so I adjusted the transitions and now it's much better. Here is the new link - [ youtube video ]
