I've summited Picketpost many years past, but never thought to take a wander around the mountain's base. I had anticipated having interesting views of the many faces of Picketpost, but was pleasantly surprised by how scenic the surroundings are. The hike started at Picketpost trailhead, heading south along the Arizona Trail, climbing moderately while affording lovely views of Picketpost rising above a sea of golden grass. Looking north, there are fantastic views of the Superstitions with the unmistakable silhouette of Weaver's Needle rising in the distance.

The trail curves eastward as it rounds the southern portion of Picketpost, and when the Arizona trail veers sharply to the south, this adventure continues onward, roughly following a drainage to connect with FR4. When FR4 hops out of the watercourse, the path continues onward along the Telegraph Canyon Trail, staying alongside the drainage. I was surprised to discover pools of water and even areas where it was flowing well enough to make a bit of noise. Because the area is well shaded and temps have been down to freezing, we even stumbled across a bit of ice! While there were some muddy areas, there wasn't sufficient water to cause any difficulties with keeping feet dry when we had to cross...though if we get some rain, that may well change.

The hike continued down Telegraph Canyon, eventually meeting up with Arnett Creek and the Arnett Canyon Trail which subsequently joins the L.O.S.T Trail, which closes the loop back to the parking area.

While the Arizona Trail was solid and pleasant to walk upon, the areas in Arnett and Telegraph can be loose and dusty. The area is popular for horseback riding, and there is also evidence of cattle grazing so watch your step if you don't care to step in 💩

Saw plenty of saguaro and was surprised by several extremely healthy palm trees. Not much in the way of flowers yet, though I did capture a photo of a happy fleabane. It was interesting to discover a couple chronolog stations placed to monitor the recovery after the Telegraph fire of 2021 (you can go to chronolog.io to view time lapse of submitted photos from the monitor points).

Saw a large group headed out as I was hiking in, got lapped by a group of horses (with riders and a dog) and one other hiker....then encountered a few hikers possibly doing the loop in the opposite direction. Overhead, there was some military jet traffic along with someone enjoying the day in a fixed wing glider.

Lil' hike to stretch the legs and get some autumn hammock time in. Temps were great and trail conditions excellent. Went CCW, so was over halfway done before colors showed up. Once I finished Telegram and dropped into Queen Creek there was plenty of hammock options, so picked one and read a book for an hour before finishing up.

Finally got back to the top after 20 years and 2 attempts where I bailed. I did this nearly 10 years ago with my family when my kids were 7 and 8, not sure what I was thinking. Getting to where we bailed that day made me more impressed that we got that far.

Wally and I got a start around 6:17am, which made for a mostly shady ascent as we got higher and then headed into the canyon. A few spots seemed like they had exposure until you got near them, then it wasn't so bad. The ascent into the canyon got vertical and very steep to where there was some mild exposure.

As we got out of the canyon and to the plateau, I lost the trail for a bit but then picked it up again. On the way back I stayed on it. The views up there are really nice, especially to the south and southeast, where you never get a bird's eye view of that area. I put my hiking sticks away as we got to the more vertical part and once we got to the plateau I realized I lost one. Fortunately a hiker behind us grabbed it and returned it to me at the summit.

New mailbox there dated April 2023. Several notebooks to sign in, and a pack of seaweed snacks, which I passed on. On the way down we followed a spur trail to the other summit on the south side which faded away before the summit. When I was up there 20 years ago, I had done more exploring around the plateau to see more views, but at this time of years the foxtails were out in full force and I could feel them digging into my ankles after just a few feet of the trail fading away.

The descent was slow, had to be very careful not to wipe out. Put my sticks away again and held onto rocks and vegetation as necessary. My knee was just starting to feel normal after the 5057 hike 2 weeks ago, and on the way up and down the steep section it started acting up again. At the one bare rock washout I was getting off the trail and headed right into the exposed area and had to hike back up to avoid cliffing out.

Once we were on the trail it was very nice to be back on level ground, and the hike back to the parking lot took hardly any time. The early start really helped with avoiding the heat. Feeling much better after the steep hikes after doing the big one to 5057 2 weeks ago, but that one had much more AEG.

Chris needed some AEG and I was in. That last time I hiked to Picketpost summit was 2008 with some guy named Denny. It seemed steeper than I remember but a lot of the terrain was familiar. We started early and it was nice and cool. We rode the mountain shadow up the side and didn't catch sunshine until the ascending upper section. There were a few other hikers with us on top but the trail was not busy at at all. The hike down was steep but the footing seemed better to me than coming that down Hiero from 5057. Once hiking out on the normal trail the breeze kept it nice.

I immediately knew I wanted to come back and climb picketpost when I drove by on the way to white canyon last weekend, but that's not possible right now (or at least a terrible idea). So, I took a stroll around instead. Busy day on the north side; tons of horse traffic in arnett canyon and a few stragglers still coming through with an aravaipa running event. Only a handful of folks on the rest of the route. I kind of hate these circumnav loops because I end up with 50 photos of the same mountain, but this one does look pretty neat from all sides.

When I last visited the area in 2018, I first hiked along the east rim of Arnett. From that vantage point, I spotted what looked like an old jeep trail up the face of the cliff on the west side of the canyon. When I reached the bottom, I couldn’t find the old jeep trail, or any trail other than the official one along the canyon bottom.

I hit the trail at 8:20 a.m. Though 58℉, it was cloudy and felt chilly, so I wore a hoodie.

Perhaps the best fall color was in a grove just past the large boulders blocking further vehicle access. Just beyond the grove, at the first of many dry creek crossings, was a carsonite post indicating this was officially now “Arnett Canyon Trail” — not just a foot path — and that the AZT was ahead.

Ten minutes later I came to a split in the trail. A engraved wood sign announced “↑ Arnett Cyn. Tr. No. 218 … ↑ Jct. L.O.S.T. Tr. No. 221 … ↑ Picketpost TH 4” miles. I was here to explore, so before I went straight on Trail #218, I first went left to see what was over that way. In 300 yds., the spur trail ends at FR 4, which has another Arnett Canyon trail sign. The signs were all recent additions.

Back on Trail #218, I passed through the first bolted metal tube gate, then by three new gabions. What the gabions were for, I do not know. At the junction of Telegraph, there was another new engraved wood sign. It’s becoming positively civilized down in there!

Though the creek had some shallow pools, I was able to cross dry, then begin the climb. It was steep — 400 ft. in ⅓ mile (23%) — but short. Other than one 30 ft. section, footing was bueno.

I lost the trail about 50 ft. below the edge of the mesa, but by that point it did not matter. The top is rolling, covered in sparse grass, and a scattering of the usual stabby things.

I worked my way counter-clockwise around the mesa’s northeast rim. There were great views of Apache Leap, Superior, its dirt strip airport, the open pit copper mine, Perlite Road, Apache Tears Mine and Boyce Thompson Arboretum. I could even make out the AZ-60 bridge over Queen Creek Canyon. Fall color in Arnett was moderate. My iPhone had 3-bar Verizon LTE reception.

Turning back to the middle of the mesa, I spotted a fairly large cairn. I’d heard there were multiple cairns, and more pink tape, on top of the mesa, but otherwise came up empty-handed. I hiked a ½ mile east, but for some reason turned around before reaching the point overlooking Finger Rock.

To my southwest was a small side canyon of Telegraph. I could have crossed it, but it looked fairly deep, so instead I followed the elevation contour around the top of it. Turns out it was only 125 ft. deep. 😏

150 yds. later, I came upon a second side canyon. It looked more rugged so, again, to save effort I worked the elevation contour line. I was now close to the bottom of Picketpost Mountain’s summit cliffs, in a couple of acres of pink granite, at the top of a third side canyon. Unless you return the way you came, that pink granite marks the best route down.

Descending the third side canyon, from the pink granite to Telegraph, is not at all difficult. It’s a pretty little canyon. There is often a path and, when there isn’t, head for the low point. Footing is never an issue. The only problem is catclaw, but if you are paying attention, you can mostly avoid the grab & stabs. If you look out, there’s nice views of various formations further up Telegraph, along the AZT.

The trail down Telegraph wasn’t always as obvious as the one in Arnett, but it was still far better than The Old Days when a fair amount of bushwhacking was involved. At one point, looking down as I do when walking, I glanced up … and jumped. Yikes! Thought it was a critter. Instead, it was just a badger-shaped log. 😆

Back at Finger Rock, I took a brief break. Afterwards, I booked it back up Arnett Canyon to my car.

Hit the TH around 7:30 am with the original goal of doing Arnett Canyon. Of the two approaches, I prefer the southernmost one. For the first couple of miles, the attraction is the rock formations, as well as views of Picketpost from the north side. About 1.6 miles in, the "pretty section" begins, with trees and flowing water (likely just from the recent rains). There is some fall color, but still a lot of green. This might be a great Christmas hike ....

At the end of Arnett, I decided to continue on and do the Picketpost circumference loop. I saw no one until halfway through Telegraph Canyon, when I came across a solo trail runner, and then began running into a few groups going doing the circumference loop CCW.

The trail through Telegraph Canyon was a little hit and miss, but no worry about getting lost. There is a section of the HAZ route through this section that juts south out of the creekbed before circling back down. I saw no real sign of a taking that jog and just stayed more or less in the creekbed.

Eventually the trail/route connects with a 4x4 road, which the trail follows before peeling off on a trail that connects to the AZ Trail.

When I got to the turnoff for the summit trail, I decided to tack that on as well. Several groups on the trail, but not very many on the summit when I arrived. Temperatures were perfect and visibility was excellent.

After the descent, I circled one more time down the south approach to Arnett, so that I could check out the north approach on the return.

Great day for a hike.

Planned on hiking Reavis to check on the Apple blossoms, yet the road to Rogers Trough was blocked off cuz they're burning the forest down during the windy season through the 29th. These notices are easy to find on the HAZ Forum [ photo ] . In retrospect, we might have been able to get in from the east on FS357-Magnum Hewitt Station Rd as the closure is a tiny area before the turn onto FS172 Hewitt Canyon Rd.

We invested 20 seconds researching an alternative. Not on my top hundred favorites list, but an intriguing hike with plenty of geology and desert flora. Effort to reward is better than average in nice weather. The creek flow was better than anticipated, yet easy crossings.

The current/original HAZ route meanders on old alignments. Bruce had an appointment with his beautician and kept shortening the arduous hike on inner options as we went. For the best, I'm not in prime fitness.

Borderline too warm for most. Seemed like pretty nice weather to me. Good to get out.

Well this day did not go as planned.

With forecasted temps in the 70's the plan was to hit up the Supes and check out the apple blossoms at Reavis Ranch.

A mile after turning on to the dirt off of Hewitt Station Road, we encountered barricades and a closed road. Evidently they were doing some prescribed burns through the 29th.

Plan B on the fly, ended up being Picketpost Circumference. It had been almost 10 years since I last did this. This would get us done before the heat hit and there is quite a bit of shade in sections.

My favorite sections of this hike are still the shaded southern and eastern portions. Water was running, birds were singing, butterflies were flutterin' and rocks were rocking. There's some interesting geology all the way around on this loop. We took a well deserved break at the creek after 5 grueling miles with triple digit elevation gain.

Back at the TH, a car just pulled up with a big AZT sticker on the passenger door. Out from the back seat popped a backpacker headed north. We chatted for a bit and he was being dropped off by a trail angel. They didn't have those back in the day when we were doing the AZT.

Good to hike with Joe, Joe the wonder chimp again.

Another trail run, would have rather been backpacking but life got in the way. First time on this loop and loved it. First three miles dragged, due to distracting thoughts. Green hills, trickling creeks, and cool breezes were clutch. When the route turns and starts heading down Telegraph -- good soup. That mile or so, right before Telegraph meets Arnett, was an absolute highlight. This might beat out Pass Mountain Loop as my go-to weekend runs.

Lots of cattle, a skunk scare, and a few muddy sections of trail that were damaged by the heavy cattle. Creek crossings on Arnett were mildly challenging. Tons of green and the flower show will be phenomenal this week.

Started just before 1pm, as the rain was finishing up. Went counterclockwise, saving the best for last. The west part of the trail had excellent views of the Superstitions, with snowy peaks, and a great view of Weaver's Needle in the distance. A little bit of up and down, but not much total elevation change. There were a few cattle along the trail, who looked sideways at us, but otherwise didn't really react. The southern and southeast parts of the trail were ugly and desolate, with a lot of burned areas and thorns.

The northeast and north parts of the route were outstanding. The canyon was colorful and varied. Arnett creek was flowing strong, and the rocks weren't even visible at some of the crossings. We had to wade across, and it was impossible to keep our feet dry. One crossing was 24 inches deep at the middle! The chilly water definitely woke us up, but also washed the mud off our shoes, and felt good on my injured Achilles tendon. There were at least 16 crossings, but I lost count. There was a nice area with several cascades and a 3-4 foot high waterfall where we stopped for a little bit.

There were at least 15 vehicles at the trailhead, with multiple people milling about. We only saw 4 people, 1 dog, and no horses (and a lot of horse poop) on the perimeter trail. The views were excellent throughout, except for the south and southeast parts of the trail. Made it back in time to catch the best parts of the Innings Festival. Overall a fun afternoon.

I was looking for something a little different (at least for me) for a two night backpacking trip close to home. I wanted to be able to hike but wanted it to be mostly flat. After doing some looking around and realizing I haven't done much at Picketpost other than climbing it and doing the AZT section there, I decided to head out there and go down Arnett Canyon and just play it by ear. It'd be a short first day due to commitments and I didn't get to the trailhead until 2 or so. I started my journey and was thrilled to see that Arnett creek was flowing well right from the get go. This is a pretty area, but it's not the best season for it really, but I still enjoyed the scenery and a few random things that are (presumably) transplants via birds/wind from the Arboretum just on the other side. With the plesantness of the hiking, I was surprised to not run into many established camping areas; I think I saw one small one inbetween the start and the Telegraph Canyon junction, where I turned south. Encountered more horse traffic than hikers, funny enough, though. I eventually ran into a very cool little spot with a fire ring (and even a good amount of processed wood) about 3.5 miles in total, about a half mile from the Telegraph junction, right before you exit the "greener" area. Set up camp, made a fire, cooked a steak (bonus: some metal grate was near the camp site and that made for a fantastic grill), went to sleep. My thermodrop said it got down to 26 that night, so a bit nippy!

The next morning, I figured I'd just hid down Telegraph, with a sort of goal of maybe camping where the AZT crosses Telegraph Canyon RD; I've done that AZT section a couple of times and there's a nice camp site there. I set out a bit later in the morning than anticipated (it was cold), and made my way to Rock Tank as I had seen a couple of pictures that made it seem more interesting than the standard AZ tanks. On the way there, I got passed by a large group of side by sides and, sure enough, they were at the tank when I got there blasting music and hanging out. It's public land, so I'll never be too upset when other people are enjoing it, but it was a little bit of a bummer because Rock Tank IS actually a cool area and was overflowing, creating some cool cascading waterfalls but I didn't feel like hanging out as it wasn't my current vibe. Interesting, the whole thing seems fenced off so livestock can't get to it? Which... doesn't make sense for a tank? Anyone have more info on that? Either way, I enjoyed filtering my water to some music they were playing (mildly disappointed no one offered me a cold beer, if I'm being honest) and went on my way.

I spent the next bit hiking South, mainly staying in the creek bed versus the road (which had some traffic, but not a lot really. Think I saw 4 groups total driving?), checking out some interesting rocks here and there, and ended the day at the AZT junction where I camped, made some calzones out of naan/sauce/cheese/bacon, and enjoyed a dumb movie. The sky was absolutely beautiful this night, too; extremely clear and the stars somehow seemed brighter than usual.

The last day, I forced myself to leave (it was cold again) and simply hiked the AZT back to Picketpost. It's a nice stretch of trail but I've done it a couple of times and wanted to make it out for an early lunch and to get back home to the family. The burgers at Porters Saloon are quite nice and I hiked quickly to get there (recommend the Superior burger; comes with roasted pepper and it's not just diced green chilis, but is a whole chunk). Had my fill and drove on home. Good trip, easy miles, flowing water, which was just what I needed.

Met Jason and John at the Picketpost trailhead for a counterclockwise Picketpost loop hike. Beautiful day, lots of water in Telegraph and Arnett creeks, fall color at peak or just past, and just a few other friendly hikers and horseback riders out on the trail. Happy hour at the trailhead afterward. Great hike.

I had never been to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, so I decided to go check it out. There were some interesting things to see, so I am glad that I went. I will probably go back sometime, but it is not a place that I would go with any regularity.

After leaving Boyce Thompson, we decided to stop by the Picketpost TH and hike part of the circumference, going CW along Arnett Creek to just past where it goes into Telegraph Canyon. This is an enjoyable section of trail to hike, and today was no exception. There were some yellow leaves along the way, which was a bonus.

There were a few trees with some foliage at both Boyce Thompson and along Arnett Creek.

There was some water in Arnett Creek, near Telegraph Canyon. The creek crossings on the way there were dry though.

Saw several AZT hikers. Also did the side trail to get some Apache Tears.

Clear skies. Though we would do this one again. Got a nice early start. Didn't run into anyone until near the end of the hike.

Trail is pretty easy to follow except for about 1/4 a mile on the back of the mountain, you are in a little valley in the streambed, so you know what direction you need to go, just the trail comes and goes for a while; probably due to flooding.

A pleasant hike.
