Now I know why most of the previously posted triplogs embellish completing the Lost Dog Wash Access Trail. It's because it sucks. Literally it's a sandy and rocky wash, not a trail. Linking it is just triplog minutiae to most, suppose I should've done the same?! When we returned to the car, coincidentally Plush by STP was playing on the radio.

And I feel, and I feel
When the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?
When the dogs do find her
Got time, time, to wait for tomorrow
To find it
To find it

For the second day in a row I decided to hike up to Sunrise Peak since the McDowell Mountain Regional Park is still closed due to the Diamond Fire. Yesterday I hiked from Adero Canyon, so today I decided to hike from the Lost Dog Wash TH.

The trail is much nicer coming in from the Adero Canyon side. However, this time of year there is some merit starting at Lost Dog: with an early start I was in shade for the first 2 miles, and in shade most of the way to the hitching post. There is sun exposure on the way back, but the sun is at your back rather than being in your face.

There are a good many more people on the trail from Lost Dog than from Adero.

I started early on this hike because you are in the shade most of the way up to Sunrise Peak. As it turned out, it was a cloudy morning so we were in shade the entire hike. With the cloud cover, once we got back down to the hitching post we decided to add a little distance and hike to the overlook on the Andrews-Kinsey Trail. From the overlook we hiked back to the Lost Dog Wash TH.

The cloud cover made for a nice hike this morning. Had I known it was going to be cloudy I would have hiked to Thompsons Peak instead.

I was originally going to go out of the country and hike in CA, but with $7+ gas there, I decided to stay in the land of the free and hike close to home. Starting from the Lost Dog Wash TH, I went up to Sunrise Peak, then went over to the Fountain Hills Preserve and hiked up to Peak 4098 before returning to the LDW TH.

The wind was crazy in the morning, and it definitely felt like a winter day. As the day went on the wind subsided, and it felt nice and warm on the way back.

There were more people on the trails in the Fountain Hills side than in Scottsdale, which was unusual.

Wildflowers continue to be disappointing in this area -- on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being highest, I'll give the flowers a 2 or a 3. Perhaps the spring wildflower show will pick up in the next week or 2, but I am not sanguine on that at this point.

There were a few brittlebush, creosote bush, Dichelostemma capitatum, chuparosa, poppies, and fiddlenecks; however, the wildflower show was underwhelming, to say the least.

I decided to head over to the Lost Dog Wash TH and hike up to Sunrise Peak. When I got back down to the hitching post, instead of going directly back to the TH, I continued over to the Fountain Hills Preserve and hiked up to Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook, before heading back to the Lost Dog Wash TH.

It was an enjoyable day out -- the weather was sunny, cool, and crisp with a bit of a breeze; basically a nice winter day. The mountains in the Mazzies and Supes were snow-capped, which made for some nice scenery.

There is getting ready to be a nice wildflower show in the McDowells I think.

I saw some chuparosa blooming in several places. A few Dichelostemma capitatum and poppies were blooming, along with a couple of lupine and one brittle bush. There should be a good showing of brittle bush in a few days.

Any day on the trail is a good day. Having said that, I wish I had done this one on Monday when there was more cloud cover. Obligations must be attended, however, so it was noon Tuesday before I was free to hit the trail. Since today's obligation was super close to the Lost Dog TH (how convenient!), it was a no-brainer to visit MSP, my favorite hiking place in the valley.

Had the clouds been with me, I might've chosen Sunrise Peak instead but I could feel that sun pretty intensely before even setting out so I decided to go with something less AEG-y. While the scenery was its usual spectacularly Sonoran self, the trails on this route aren't among my faves in the MSP system. It was pleasantly quiet, though, with just a handful of hikers and no cyclists or equestrians. On the return leg, I opted for picking up the shorter Sunrise return to the TH in order to tend to a grumbly heel.

I decided to get up early and do this hike.

It turned out to be a nice day -- temperature in the low 80's with lots of cloud cover. It was a tad humid though, but not all THAT bad.

This was a good way to start off a holiday!

I decided to do a hike not far from home and settled on this one.

I had intended to hike from the Adero Canyon TH to the Lost Dog Wash TH and back, hitting Sunrise Peak and Peak 3098, aka Westview Overlook, along the way. However, the Adero Canyon TH was full (I didn't get there until around 10:30). There were a number of cars parked illegally in the bike lines on the road, but blocking bike lanes isn't my thing, so I decided just to drive to the Lost Dog Wash TH and do the hike from there.

I went from the Lost Dog Wash TH up to Sunrise Peak, and instead of going directly back to the TH, I took the Andrews-Kinsey Trail into the Fountain Hills Preserve. From there I did the Western Reserve Loop CCW up to Peak 3098, aka the Westview Overlook. From there I headed back to the Lost Dog Wash TH.

There were a lot more people on the trails than I am used to seeing, especially within a mile or so of the Lost Dog Wash TH. There were also a few people heading up to Peak 3098.

There were absolutely no wildflowers blooming. Perhaps some flowers will eventually bloom, but it is shaping up to be a dud of a spring wildflower season.

The temperature was nice for the hike and there was a breeze blowing, but it was a sunny day and there was no shade anywhere on the hike.

I did not even see one flower blooming.

It's been over 5 1/2 years since I've done the Peak and usually it was an after-work hike but not today. So how bad is this? I planned the hike so that I could be done by 4:45; in time to enjoy my beer before it got completely dark and then drive to the Thai House to pick up some Pad Thai. Such is the life of my retirement at the moment  .

Off I went and headed up the trail. I had forgotten how rough it is; I get spoiled with my Phoenix Preserve trail tread. I see they have rocked this trail too and added drainages. Seems strange to see all these new drainages in some of the city, county, regional parks I've been hiking. It is a rather long gradual entry up to where the climb actually begins. I encountered a few hikers along the way.

Once you actually start the climb, the trail tread, for the most part, is a lot nicer except for some rocky sections here and there. I more or less like the grade of this climb and I still remembered it. I plodded my way up to the first saddle and noticed the moon to the left of Sunrise Peak so I grabbed a couple pics along with a few more along the way as my foreground changed. I also took pictures of the distant views. It wasn't the best time of day to be taking pictures but I took them anyway. In fact, I ended up taking more pictures than I anticipated but I guess that's usually the case with me 😉 .

When I got to the second saddle I saw the new development below. Since 2015 one portion was finished and the beginnings of an even bigger subdivision has emerged. I also noticed that you can use one of the horseshoes from the railing to center Weavers Needle but it would take manual settings to get the shot. And now it was time for the climb up Sunrise. I think this is one of the easier short and sweet climbs there is of a peak. Just before I got to the top I saw a raven on a rock at the edge so I tried to get a few pictures of it preening and observing. This is when I wish I had my camera.

There were a few people at the top. I made my way over to the eastern edge and sat for a moment to get some photos and re-tie my shoes. I was amused by the Exit sign for the way down. Don't know that I've seen an exit sign on a peak before. On my way down I encountered a few hikers just like I did on the way up. And then it was down the hills I went enjoying the cool air and trying to make decent time so that I could do the full hike I had planned. Once again I encountered hikers and a few bike riders. That has to be a rough trail in spots to ride because of the rockiness.

I took my "stage right" onto the Ringtail Trail which I hadn't been on this side for many years. It has a few little hills and some nice desert landscaping. When I got to the intersection with the Old Jeep Trail and it said 1.8 miles (I think?) I figured I could still do it and be done in time for my 4:45 beer. This is a gradual grade hike up a very rocky road and then two dips with another small dip before you hike slightly downgrade until reaching the intersection with the Lost Dog. Once again there was more trail work here including rock and drainages. I encountered a few sets of hikers and bike riders along the way. I was surprised it was still another 1.8 to the TH as I was hoping it was only a mile. Nonetheless, it was 4:10 and if I could do a 20 min. mile💨 I could still meet my beerline, I mean deadline.

They've also done some work on the Lost Dog Trail including one big drainage area. And, of course, along here are some little cholla forests that are lit up by the sun. The shade of the mountains was pretty large now but they weren't quite covering all the cholla yet so I was able to get a few pictures. Once back in the shade of the mountains I put on my down vest that I had tied to my waist pack. I just don't like getting that chill at the end of a hike so I was glad I had lugged it along. There were more hikers now and a few bike riders as well so pretty consistent throughout the 9 miles.

And now, what time is it? Yep, "beer time". I try to park Tonto 3 in a position so as to enjoy the view while I have my beer and snack. And this time on the drive out, I pulled over to get a picture of the sunset that was also slightly reflected on the hood.

Oh, I almost forgot. This is the most total miles I've hiked in a year breaking my 578 mile record in 2014. How 'bout that! Who knew this hiking thing would catch on with me....

WATCH: 8.72 mi in 3:32:19 at 2.4 avg MPH, 134 avg BPM (1:11 in Zone 5 (max), 1:30 in Zone 4 (anaerobic), 48 in Zone 3) burning 1450 calories (yeah for Pad Thai then). Starting temp 66.1 at 16% humidity. Finished at beer time, 4:42.

I was looking for an exercise hike close to home, and decided to hike from the recently reopened Adero Canyon TH to the Lost Dog Wash TH and back. On the way to the LDW TH, I hiked up to Sunrise Peak. On the way back, I went up to Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook.

While there isn't really anything remarkable about this hike, it was a nice day to be outside and the trails weren't very crowded.

I imagine that I will do this one another time or 2 over the winter.

I was looking for a mid-week hike close to home so I decided to do this one once again.

It was cloudy and breezy all the way up and part of the way back, which was nice.

The trail wasn't crowded, but there were more people than I am used to seeing on a hike.

I don't really care much for urban hiking trails, but with the hot weather I decided that I wanted an early hike that wasn't too far from home, so I did this one again. There was some cloud cover, so after descending Sunrise Peak I decided to take the Andrews-Kinsey Trail out to an overlook, and then go back to the TH. The Andrews-Kinsey Trail is a nice one, and the riff-raff usually stays away from it. The only person that I saw on the A-K Trail was a girl who was trail-running.

On the way back, once we got back down to the hitching post, we went out the Andrews-Kinsey Trail as far as the mirador, and then we went back to the TH. There was hardly anyone on the trails this morning.

I did not have my GPS set correctly at the start of the hike, so the GPS track that I posted omitted the first 2 miles. The stats above are adjusted for the missing mileage and elevation gain.

Here's the plan: park a car at Quartz Trailhead, and hike with my son and daughter to Lost Dog Wash trailhead, and meet my wife and other son there for a picnic. Nice point-to-point hike. We'd just crossed the road from the Quartz parking lot and were about to step on the trail, when my daughter asked this question:
"Do you think there'll be snakes out?"
Me: "Probably not; might be a little cool today, but I'll sure keep my eyes open."
"I'll let you go in front."
Less than thirty seconds later on the trail, we heard the buzzing, really loud. He was off to the side on the other side of a brittlebush, head up but otherwise beautifully camouflaged in the grass. Still buzzed even after we'd backed away far enough to take pictures; finally slithered away. Next question: "Does the other place have wider trails?" I replied that they were definitely wider, and more travelled, than Quartz Trail -- so we changed plans and drove to Lost Dog. (But she was still ready to hike even after seeing, right next to us, the last thing she wanted to see!) We ended up hiking Sunrise Trail as far as we had time for before joining the rest of the family for the picnic. Flowers everywhere, especially brittlebush and lupine. Good news: there's more hikes ahead of us with school being out, with the only condition being that we go when it's cooler and the snakes are sleeping.

I decided to head to the Lost Dog Wash TH on Shea Blvd in Scottsdale and do this hike again.

There was quite a wildflower display on the hike, particularly on the Andrews-Kinsey Trail. I'd say that the wildflowers are at their peak right now, although the creosote bushes and cactaceae haven't really started blooming yet.

There were more people than I expected at the TH, so if I go back out there in the next few days I think that I will start from Fountain Hills. I was walking along the Sunrise Trail and came upon an older woman squatted down and urinating in the middle of the trail...and of course there was the obligatory trail runner not wearing much more than a thong. I think that I need to start hiking in remote, wilderness areas in hopes of encountering more civility on a trail!

There was quite a wildflower display on this hike, particularly along the Andrews-Kinsey Trail. If there had been more poppies blooming I would have labelled this as "extreme" instead of "substantial".
