Took advantage of the cooler than normal temperatures for one more Window Peak summit. No complaints about that, as I used far less water. It must have been appealing to a lot of people, as I had 5 other people come up to the summit while I was on top. I've never had that before, here.

Lots of flowing water in the canyon. It drowns out any birds, but some people love water. A few hawks were riding the thermals along the ridge.

Good air quality. I think I could see the Bradshaws, in addition to the usual summits visible from Window. Good hike, great summit, but I'm always glad to be done when I am, as this is a rough hike.

About as good as conditions can get for a winter summit of Window Peak. Brian and I made the summit, and exactly 1 year ago to the date, Preston once again joined us for the lower part and turned back after a few hours while we pressed on for the summit. This wasn't even planned, it just worked out that way. Unlike after reaching Montrose Saddle last year, this year we succeeded.

There is an enormous amount of flowing water in Ventana Canyon, probably the most I have ever seen. Lots of water falls, cascades, flowing side canyons, and big pools. Snow was limited to the most upper parts on north aspects. We did encounter some snow in the last 50 feet which was a little bit of a problem, but I used my ice axe to scrape it off the rocks. This was then able to melt with the sun, and dry off for the climb down. The snow is melting, but there will soon be more.

There were 3 Javelina in the desert as we neared the trailhead. I guess they waited for everyone to leave.

Ventana and Esperero trails are now in excellent shape, worked well as promised.

Great day out with perfect sunny clear skies, warm temperatures, calm winds, and good air quality.

Yesterday was a warm but perfect day to hike Window Peak, because it was calm. It was windy the day before, and it's very windy today( April 1) as I write this. Also, it had been just over 5 years [ triplog ] since I was last up here, and it had been 10 months before that [ triplog ] when I had last traveled all the way up Ventana Canyon. Being after the fire last June, I figured it might be worth hiking up again.

It is hard to tell, but it looks like Ventana Canyon Trail was already starting to fall apart and have problems before the fire. The Bighorn fire didn't help. You have to follow cairns in a few spots and erosion is increasing now, too. There is a conservation trail crew doing light work down lower, but nothing yet up high where it is needed.

Some of the canyon burned hot, but this canyon has more intact or recoverable oak canopy so there will be shade, and more in the future. Unlike the forest in Finger Rock Canyon, it isn't burned over where you want it most.

The Area of Esperero around the peak is overgrown and dead. It was overgrown in the past, but after the fire almost all of it is dead and falling into what remains of the trail. I hated the Esperero Trail in 2015 [ triplog ] when I used it for Window Peak, and while I'll never bother with that hike again, I wonder what it looks like. The overgrowth was only bad around Window Peak as I recall.

I was happy to be in the shade of the canyon for my trip down, and there were tree frogs in the lower pools. [ youtube video ]

Also, because I was there and I had been hoping to capture a hawk that was circling the peak screeching, I took a summit video. [ youtube video ]

Window Rock and Window Peak have been on my radar screen for a while, so I decided that this was a good time of year to go do this hike. There is a bighorn sheep closure area in some parts of the Pusch Wilderness from Jan 1 - Apr 30 each year(https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DO ... 561663.pdf): you can still hike to Window Rock, but Window Peaks is off limits during this time. So early December is a good "window" of opportunity to do this hike.

The weather was super for the hike, although it was a bit warm on the way back. There was some patchy fog and some low lying clouds on top, which made for an almost surreal feel. Going up to Window Peak was the highlight of the hike for me -- there was some class 3 climbing near the peak, but I didn't think that it was too bad.

We started and ended the hike from the Ventana Canyon TH. The Ventana Canyon Trail was pretty rocky, and it isn't my favorite trail to hike on. I'm sure that I will do this hike again sometime, but for a hike with somewhat similar distance and elevation gain, I like Rincon Peak better.

First time up window peak.
Thank you to Jim_H for the nice photos and tips that made the peak ascent easy.
Highlight of the trip was the spectacular airshow by about 35 ravens that came in from the west and then circled and played above window peak with acrobatics around the peak.
https://vimeo.com/1857...

Went up Ventana and down Esperero.
Lost the trail more than a few times due to the non-native Lehmann Lovegrass covering the Ventana canyon trail starting around Maiden Pools and also in a few spots on Esperero going down before you hit the creek and then the entire stretch between the creek and Cardiac Gap.
Apparently not just me because some of the wrong turns unfortunately looking more like the trail than the trail itself, you just end up in a spot that doesn't make sense (cliff, pile of boulders, furious looking vegetation)
Not recommended at all or if you do feel you have to go bring a stick and wear pants.
Esperero from Cardiac Gap down is now much better than it was a month ago and I flew down that section.

First time at Bridal Veil falls and the water really helped.
Total water for the day was 6 liters thanks to the one I picked up at the falls.

My original plan was to do Mt. Wrightson via Florida Canyon but then at last minute I switched gears and decided to do Window Peak via Finger Rock. The change in plans was mostly weather related. Wrightson is better done when it is a little warmer. This one on the other hand can get real toasty so I took advantage of our break in weather.

I only got sprinkled on a few times but nothing major. Trail is in great condition all the way. Wildflowers are spotty at best.

This one is tuff but a good one for sure! Sadly I don't have any pictures to post as I somehow lost my camera on the way down. :(

This was by far my largest AEG hike since May of 2012 when I was hiking Catalina SP to Mt Lemmon and back. I've come close a few times with several hikes in the mid to high 5,000' AEG range, but being well over 6,000' of AEG was a little bit of a struggle. Not going up, but down, when fatigue and the rough nature of Finger Rock's final descending switchbacks were getting really tiring. I'm tired and sore, and I wanted that.

Matt likes this hike. I had rejected it on the basis of it being too long as recent as our last Kimball hike together, but last Friday for some reason, I had a sudden change of heart and it was getting me excited. It is long for AEG and on the higher end for miles, but very doable. The only issue is the poor condition of Finger Rock between Esperero and Pima Canyon Trails, but that is so heavily cairned you can't get lost. This is despite the feeling of it being little more than a rough game trail at times, and there actually being a few game trails that branch off from the "trail". However, those cairns will lead the way.

I skipped Kimball, I don't consider that part of a hike to Window Peak from Finger Rock, and I was just there 5 days ago. Besides, I was tired and wanted to get down, and with the still short days and the long drive time from Phoenix, I wasn't even interested. I edited the original GPS to arrive at what appears to be an accurate route for this hike, but trimmed some AEG and miles, due to an issue near Window Peak.

I started at 9:50 AM, was on Window by 2:22 PM, spent just over 20 minutes on the summit, and was down by 6:45 PM. Being pressed for time, I only took a few short breaks, usually for food or water. This was a goal hike as much as an enjoyment one, and so this falls into my category of being too long to be enjoyable most of the time. I had to keep moving the entire time to be done before dark. So, there were no frequent, "sit and listen breaks", or, "stop and smell the air breaks (no flowers up high)". Not a hike I would do often, as a result. Perhaps next spring, at the earliest. I am training now for a larger goal, so I was happy with this. Besides, those views from Finger Rock's back side, Window Peak's awesome summit, and most of the Esperero Trail's upper end, are totally worth the punishment this hike provided.

Started from Ventana trailhead. Went up and took a nice break at the Window. Hit the summit at Window peak and saw Ladybugs!! From there we made it up to the sanctuary and finally to the actual summit. Rope was in good enough condition for us to use. This was my 2nd time up here- the first time I didn't go to the actual top. This time Trevor forced me to make the final maneuver up to the true summit and man was it worth it. Quite the adrenaline rush and I'm not sure I could have done it without a lot of motivation. Stayed the night at the Sanctuary. Beautiful area back there, I will return. Went down through Sabino for our way out. Jumped into Hutch's and took the lazy man's tram for the way out. All in all a very rewarding two days!

Five days ago we were lucky to get out out alive on the exotic wager despite close relations to the field. Slight adjustments sent smiles home today. Nothing high tech. Just watered the horses and changed the pace on the first twenty four furlongs. Looking forward to hitting the state fair circuit.

We hit this one over the weekend and came a little under prepared. It fought back and hit us hard. Today we came back for redemption. It went well enough this time that we added in a second trip up to Mt Kimball on the return. :y:

Near the top of Cathedral we saw a black rattler. Then on the way back I stepped on one who was napping in the middle of the trail near Window Peak. :o It woke him and he wasn't the most cooperative for a photo. I told him I was sorry and we kept moving.

All in all a great trip this go round.

Window from Sabino using the Esperero. Turns out, I am not a big fan of the Esperero Trail. I used GPS Joe's traverse track, trimmed, cloned, reversed 1, joined, re-synced and arrived at my figures, so I assume they are accurate. Poison ivy in the middle of Esperero, which is similar to what I remember for Ventana and Romero.

dry Esperero Canyon Dry Dry
Dry where it matters, except for a waterfall near a camping spot.

This has the potential to be a really amazing hike. In this particular case it kicked my butt from Window Peak on out. Temps were warm and at times borderline hot. Views from Window Peak and Cathedral Peak are outstanding.

I need to practice up and hit this one again.

jj mentioned a hike, tacos & Dairy Queen trifecta. With a few years of horse racing knowledge this sounded like a sure bet.

Window Rock is something I've only heard about since the 90's until today. Now I get it. Better yet I'm understanding the layout of Pusch Ridge top to bottom. Felt a little warmer than average today sweating out the ascent.

I'd say this is more forgiving vs Kimball via Finger Rock Canyon. The miles rolled off with a steady 600-700 foot gain per mile as rattled off by HAZ Tracks. Very nice Tucson overviews around two miles then wham bam views up top. The window is huge and dazzling. The peak is a must. Half dozen friendly groups along the way. Tucsonians are living the dream with all the desert to heaven options bordering the city.

This would be my second time up this Jewel of the Catalinas and a first for Joe. We made a plan to meet up in Chandler at 6:30am and headed out. After a couple wrong turns in Tucson we found the Trailhead and we were off.

The morning was brisk however within a mile the days sun had already begun to heat things up. The rest of the hike was warm and comfortable. A nice steady climb had us up top a few hours later. The views from the Window and from Window Peak are spectacular. We took a short break on the Summit and then headed back down the way we came.

Afterwards it was Tacos at El Guerro. Good stuff as always!

I was still too sore to do my hoped for hike up to the WOR from the park, so I opted for this as I wanted to hike it before it got too hot. Still didn't bring enough water for down low, and it was harder than hoped with my legs not fully recovered from Monday's hike up to Kimball. I realize I am not in great shape, but I am still probably pretty decent considering this is a fairly hard hike. However, the last mile of the hike just went on too long to be fun. Oh well. Lots of nice birds in the oak, but also some large poison ivy spots, too. I like the summit, much more of a true summit compared to Kimball. I stopped briefly in the window, but that hardly feels like a destination with a peak nearby.

Tricky Nicky the Rastafarian and I have been talking about doing Window Peak for a couple months. He mentioned that it is one of his all time favorites. I can see why. What an awesome summit! Views, views, views.

We met early at Ventana Canyon TH and headed out. The trip up is a nice steady push. Then comes the window. Super cool! From there it was a short hike and an even shorter scramble to the top.

Loved it! :y:

Ah, the Catalinas....it had been too long. This is a spectacular hike - one of the finest I've seen in the state. It was a bit warm (already??) down low, but the creek was flowing well, and was doing so from its source to the desert floor. Which made it extra sweet to be kicking steps into snow near the Window later on.

The trail, while relentless in its ascent, is in good shape the entire way. A number of people were on the trail down lower, who mainly were heading to the pools after the first big climb. Past that, hiking in the oak, juniper, and grass-covered slopes was very pleasant. Gaining the main ridge of the Catalinas affords good photo ops in every direction, but the best views are the ones seen sitting underneath the Window. Just amazing. Couldn't stop there, though, as the summit called. One steep push put us in an oak grove between some pillars that looked very difficult, but right at the last second, an easy route appears, and the stunning view is yours. We went back to the sunny Window and had lunch. Got back as the sun was setting and it was off to Thunder Canyon brewing...
