Nice overnighter up on Mingus.
A little hiking, birding, geocaching, exploring and relaxing.
The old dam at the start of Butterfly is gone, and there is no water in the tank a little way up the trail, but the seep where the dam used to be is a bird magnet! More Western Tanagers than I've ever seen at once, plus Lazuli Bunting, Black-headed Grosbeak, etc.
Hiked around Mingus Lake (aka Elk Tank) in the late afternoon and the next morning - always a good spot. Also saw the AGFD fish truck dumping in some fish.
Picked up about six geocaches.
Visited the launch ramp - no hang gliders, unfortunately.
Checked out Mingus Lookout - was disappointed that it was unoccupied ... was hoping to go up.
Also got a nice gift from my camp neighbor.

Trying to find nice mountains for the summer that aren't too far from Phoenix. I'd heard of Mingus before, but not in reference to its hiking trails. Was curious to see what it was all about. I borrowed a figure 8 route a few people have uploaded to this website that seemed to hit just about every trail. What better way to get acquainted with a mountain? I added the highpoint LO and Mingus Lake to sweeten the deal. Parked at the Butterfly trailhead a little before 6am and headed up.

Started on Butterfly and by the time I was at the Middle Trail jct, I realized I had missed the turn north/West Rim. Decided to continue on Middle Trail since it heads more or less the same way. First stop was the hang gliding pad. Took a short break before I had even done any work.

Roadwalk down to Coleman. Wanted to get Coleman/Gaddes done early in the day before it got warm. Coleman was mostly shady and it goes down pretty quick. Another road over to Gaddes2. Shady and cool on the biggest ascent of the day, and water was flowing about half way up. Gaddes reminded me a little of some of the Rim canyons around Payson.

Took the road to the summit/lookout and skipped past it and down the other side through the forest to the lake. Took my only real break of the day. Had the lake to myself. I tried to focus on how nice the bottom half of the 8 was because I had a feeling that descending onto the east side and starting the upper half would be warm and generally not as good as walking through Mingus' crown of pines.

It was warmer, but there were nice views toward Secret Mountain and Humphrey's, and it was a lot clearer than the morning. It was also shadier than expected, and I don't think it was ever above low 80s. Passed one group of hikers all day with 2 miles left, but I lost count of the cars going up and down 104. All the trails were in great shape. Ended up sold on Mingus and with a dozen trails in my back pocket for the future.

The campground is closed, as is the road to get there. However, its only a short walk to the good stuff. There was a handful of people fishing at the lake and one family at the viewpoint areas. A pleasant afternoon spent at 7k. Beats driving to Flag for the pines.

I like this little loop hike, so I decided to do it again -- with a meetup group this time. Like my last hike here, we started at the Mescal Springs TH, which is where FR 338 exits off of Highway 89-A. We saw no other hikers the entire day, and the only people we saw were some hang gliders pilots who were preparing to launch at the hang glider launching pad. I know nothing about hang gliders, and it was interesting talking to those guys.

This is a nice hike imho. On the way up to the top of Mingus, you have nice views of Sedona, the San Francisco Peaks, and Kendrick Peak. On top of Mingus, you can look down below at Cottonwood, and also see the Bradshaw Mountains in the distance. On the way back down, we saw some smoke off in the distance west of Flagstaff, which I think was a prescribed burn.

Tracie, my intrepid hiking partner, and I decided to make our first trip up to Mingus Mountain on a windy Thursday.

We parked on Highway 89A, just across from where Forest Road #338 turns off of 89A. We started a lollipop look hike by first hiking on FR #338 for about 1.7 miles until we came to a turnoff for North Mingus Trail 105. We took Trail 105 for another 1.7 miles, and came to a junction with Mingus Trail #105A at a saddle below Mingus Mountain. From there we began a counterclockwise loop by continuing on Trail #105 until we go to the top of Mingus Mountain. We stopped at the top next to the hang glider launching area and enjoyed the views to the south of the Bradshaw Mountains. From there, we continued south through the Mingus Mountain Campground until we got to a parking area. From there we took Viewpoint Trail #106 until we came to a junction with Trail #105A, and we then took 105A back to the junction with Trail #105, thus completing the loop. Then we retraced our steps by taking Trail #105 back to FR #338, and we took FR #338 back to the parking area.

As other triplogs have mentioned, Trail #105 was the best of the trails on this hike. Trail #105 had some nice scenery and it had a good bit of shade and some filtered sun from numerous large trees that were along the trail. Trail #106 was a bit steep and slippery, and it had a lot of sun exposure.

We did not see any other hikers all day. We did see one person who was parked in a car near the hang glider launch. On the way back we saw someone driving a 4WD vehicle on FR #338 -- and you would need a 4WD vehicle on this road.

I've been hitting a lot of Fire Tower hikes this summer. We were chatting with Suzy at Spruce Mountain last week and she suggested checking out Mingus. So, I found this loop posted up by Tibber and Trekkingecko that looked perfect! I was a little nervous this morning as it had been raining all night into the early morning. We were presented with a spectacular view of Mingus in the clouds as we turned north on Fain road. We parked at the Viewpoint picnic area to start the hike. As soon as stepped off the road on to the Coleman trail it turned into a total mudfest. We spent a lot of time slipping and sliding and jumping from rock to rock. Once we started to descend off the top of Mingus, the ground firmed up. However, the vegetation was both overgrown and still wet from the overnight rains. So, now we were muddy and wet :) Great views heading down to FS413 and a nice connector down to the 9037 trail, Gaddes Spring. The 9037/110 Gaddes Spring/Canyon trails were fantastic. Firm ground but more wet overgrown vegetation. The trail crisscrosses the creek (unbelievably dry!) as it ascends back up Mingus. We ran into 2 fellows coming down the trail near the top. They said no one was up at the fire tower and it was closed, bummer. Once we reached the road at the top, we elected to go check out the fire tower any way. Much to our surprise, the ranger was climbing the steps just as we arrived. After getting situated, he invited us up and up we went. We had a fantastic short stay with Johnny Mingus and scored some Smoky the Bear hankerchiefs. The skies were darkening up and starting to rumble so we made haste back to the truck and made it all the way back to Dewey before the rain started. Stopped at Left-T's for some excellent post hike treats. So, thank you Tibber and Trekkingecko for posting up a fantastic loop up on Mingus!

go fish! we've been thinking about coming up here at least once this summer. mingus "lake" is hardly a lake, but it is stocked with trout, so we fished! we were catching 'em left and right. no one else was - probably due to they were all using bobbers. we were using powerbait at the bottom and tada. fish! sunday we walked out past the hang glider launch all the way to the benchmark before heading back down the mountain. we had breakfast at this cute little place called the mine cafe in jerome. i liked it.

Site #11 :y: :y: :y: Which if you don't know is the "corner" site on the rim. The views are to die for, and by the jealous looks in the eyes of other campers, possibly to kill for. We made it out just fine. Not that we wanted to leave. With Western Tanagers overhead and all of the Verde Valley below we could've stayed another night or two. Or three. Or four. This is the best camping spot I've had in Arizona since the time I had the Monument Valley campground to myself some 15 years ago.

The second day, I resolved to do two things that would allow for more hiking: an early start, and staying at the higher elevations. I accomplished both and had a much better day.

The Mingus fire lookout is accepting visitors and we spent some time talking while I was enjoying the cool breezes you get up in the fire tower.

I watched 2 parasailers and one hang glider take off. Looks fun, but not sure that I'll ever be able to be convinced to do the hang gliding takeoff.

My search for the Mingus View Trail failed completely. There are no signs acknowledging its existence whatsoever. I must have cruised past the turnoff, but it is anybody's guess where it starts.

Time to finally get out with Kelly again. I didn't realize it had been since January that we last hiked together. I emailed Mary Jo and she joined us for our trip to the lower North country. The drive to the TH from my house only takes an hour and 1/2. We stopped at the campground area to use the restrooms which are very nice. We parked Tonto under a tree near the 108 TH and loaded up our gear for our trek.

This Coleman Trail starts out as a nice hike thru the forest though on a pretty rocky old road that becomes a trail. Mary Jo saw a viewpoint that we ventured over to and checked out before the trail curved away from the blue sky. We got some nice views of the SF Peaks and red rock country below. We would get even better views from the actual viewpoint at the Campground later.

It was interesting as when we started descending the trees started changing almost immediately. The trail is rather rocky and there were a couple areas where you had to pay attention to where the trail went but it's pretty well cordoned off where not to go. On the way down as the views opened up, there was some additional flora including hollyhocks and the red blooming Parry Agave plants. The trail starts to switchback which was very nice in some areas. Eventually you join up with the road where we saw 3 ATVers. You walk the road westward for a piece until the signage for Trail 9037 appears (in a shady curved section of the road right after the creek). There are some nice big rocks to sit on here for a moment before heading up the canyon [ photo ] .

The canyon is quite nice and really goes on for a long while. There are a couple little climbs along the way but nothing too difficult if you're feeling well... which I wasn't :( . Not sure if it's residual left over from my 10 day road trip, lack of hiking conditioning or the heat. I had to get my poles out. Nice to have Mary Jo along to keep Kelly company since I was lagging. We took a break a couple miles into the canyon and had our lunch around noon before continuing on. You cross the currently dry creek off and on and we think there was a bit of poison ivy along the way too. It was leaves of 3 and green. We did see some little pools of water as we got further in the canyon. There was also another grassy area that was filled with lady bugs;Later one would land on my nose.

And then we hit the junction with the 110; go northward or to your right if you're heading back to the top. Here the trail was just lovely :) and stayed that way all the way up to Gaddes Spring where it turned rather rocky again. The spring is a corralled area with a covered cistern. If you listen carefully, you can hear the water running. From here you have some more rocky climbing and then you top out, pass thru a gate and eventually hook up with the road.

We took a 1/4 mile detour to the Lookout. We asked if he was taking visitors and he said yes so up and up and up we went. John was very informative and told us some great stories. He's retired military and retired fire fighter. The views from here were great especially with all the rain showers and virga in the distances. We also saw a fire they were letting burn to the NE.

From there it was a road walk back to Tonto Jr but not before stopping at the viewpoint at the campground. We decided to get back to Tonto and come back over here for our snack and gauge the weather conditions to decide if we wanted to get in another little hike. We enjoyed our stay on the brick wall with our views to the SF Peaks (still with snow) and Red Rock Country (including Wilson Mountain, Airport Mesa and Cathedral Rocks showing on and off as the light moved) with the Verde River below. We decided the weather was kind of "iffy" so we headed down to Prescott. As we came into the Valley there was a show of showers that was pretty cool. We finished our day at Left-T's. EXCELLENT choice ladies!

The drive to the Valley was not bad and was highlighted by a huge taxidermyed elk head in the back of a pickup as it stared at us for several miles.

Some video on Coleman and the Lookout Tower and Viewpoint. (I, unfortunately didn't do very much video in Gaddes Canyon as I wasn't feeling well) but trust me, it's a pretty little canyon.

Time for what has become the annual dad/kids camp trip. Since there were state 1 fire restrictions throughout most of the state, we chose a developed campground. I'm not usually a big fan of developed campgrounds, but we found some spots that were pretty isolated. Only the camp host was nearby at about 50 yards.

I was really impressed with the area. The diverse live zones, views, and hanglider launch point all stand out as favorites (along with the breakfast burritos Saturday morning, of course). The only downside is having to contend with I17 to get here. That damned freeway nailed all but one of us in a 1-2 hour parking lot on the way up.

On the return trip, we went through Jerome to explore a little and get some ice cream. Then it was back to reality and 100 degrees.

Special thanks to the Yeti for a great recommendation!
