I couldn't find a snakes today at my usual spots, even though the conditions were ideal, so I decided to check around the park. I only found one, and it was a 8)

After a nice breakfast in the RV and before Deborah's check out time I planned this nice little hike. We went clockwise which took advantage of the sun this morning. I was thinking of including Praying Hands but we didn't have enough time.

Getting from the campground to the gate proved to be a little tricky. We did a little cross country so now Deborah and Duke knew they were once again hiking with me  since I've done that a couple times with them now. Back on the main trail we hiked and I noticed at the first two intersections it really isn't signed very well, thus why Deborah ran up Siphon Draw rather then onto Jacob's Crosscut yesterday morning.

The one thing with this hike, like yesterday's, it's pretty no matter which direction you go. We got to the intersection and took Jacob's Trail. I showed her the points of interest as we hiked north to the far side of the Treasure Loop. I also pointed out various other hikes we can do in the area; specifically the Goldfields. The trail going ESE on this part of the Treasure Loop is so nice and wide as it gradually makes its way up.

There were quite a few hikers out and everyone was friendly for the most part. I see where the Park is also having trouble keeping people off of areas they don't want them to go. We reached the top of the Loop and then headed down Prospector's. As we got to the main trail before the gate we spoke to some people from Montana as one of them was wearing a Grizzlies shirt. We got to the gate and this time stayed on the trail into the campground.

While helping Deborah get the RV ready to go another Montanan came up and visited with us for a moment. However, they live in Gilbert now and are retired from their ranch at Big Hole, a very beautiful part of Montana.
After making sure the bikes were secure, Deborah stabilized the inside contents and I took off for home. She was next heading for Picacho State Park for a couple nites before going to Tucson for a few days. Then she'll be back up for one nite at Lost Dutchman before putting the RV in storage until she comes back again in May to take it home to Big Arm, MT (a two acre property with lake front on Flathead Lake). She loves having visitors so if you're in the area and want to hike, run or kayak, let me know.

I was lucky enough to get invited to a New Year's Eve Celebration Dinner and stayover at Lost Dutchman State Park by @Trishness. That's an invitation which should never be turned down if you're familiar with her cooking and hospitality. On the way there I stopped on Lost Dutchman road where it has that wide shoulder with an awesome view of the Superstition Massif to eat my sandwich. It was going to be a Massif two days for me and this was a great way to start.

I checked into a full campground, said hello to Trish and Sande and headed on my way to get a quick hike in before the festivities started. I decided on a Prospectors Loop combo to try and get a little elevation. On my way up, after the junction for the Siphon Draw/Flatiron trail, I looked over to see masses of people coming and going; I was shocked. I've heard about this phenomenon out here but now I've seen it with my own eyes.

Meanwhile I continued my hike on the Prospectors Trail on a very beautiful, slightly overcast day. As I started to take pictures I noticed a sundog and gleefully tried to take a few more pictures. And then as I continued further up I heard a hawk and looked up to see two. Fortunately I had brot my regular camera so I zoomed to try and catch some of their flying action above me. And then three mules with two riders passed me by. The first mule they called Grandma and the third was just pack training. I offered to help by jumping on but they declined😏.

I finally got to the top of the Loop and decided to swing wide for the outer Treasure Loop and I even swung a little wider at a junction. I always remember going with my mother on this part of the trail from way back; the only time she really hiked with me. Anyway, there was this grouping of tall cholla I remember she admired. Well I found some additional cholla and tried framing up various backgrounds between them with limited success. It looked good on the phone but not so much when I got home.

The weather looked threatening so I picked up the pace as the temperature seemed to drop and the wind picked up a bit. This is really a pretty part of the trail with the cholla forest on both sides of the trail when you start heading south to hook up with Jacob's Crosscut. There were quite a few hikers out and I was surprised at their scanty attire while I was practically freezing to death  . I finally made it back to my campsite to enjoy my beer and warm up before going over to Trish's campsite.

I noticed the helicopter had dropped in up by the cabins but thot maybe it was just visiting as it just headed south and then out of site. Pretty soon I see it at the saddle just below the Flatiron bow so I grabbed my camera and started zoom shooting. I walked over to Trish's camp and we all commented about the helicopter's location wondering why it was up in that location and before you knew it, the helicopter was landing at the cabins site so I grabbed my camera to photograph the goings-on. I was told by others that they had previously rescued a 70 yr old woman. These two were the last of the rescuers. There weren't any ambulances or anything, just ranger and sheriff pickup trucks so I assume all is well. Trish just told me there was another rescue on Friday, a lady with a bloody leg.

Trip up to Apache Junction for my first camping trip of 2018. On the way, I met AZLumberjack at the Handlebar Pub and Grill for some cold ones and to catch up on things and trade stories about doctors, health issues, etc. By the way, Jack was moving pretty good after the recent knee surgery. :D That doesn't surprise me one bit.

spent saturday night at lost dutchman state park
had a great time at angela's birthday party
taco truck and visiting with a bunch of haz folks made for a nice evening
after coffee and breakfast, decided to hike the black mesa loop
a better choice might have been flatiron and 5024, right from the campground
took off about 8:30 from first water and hiked the loop counterclockwise
saw a total of nine hikers and two horseback riders, most near the start or finish
good to get back in the supes

Wanted to do a quick hike before the Tibberfest so that I would be at the Campground for any early arriving guests. As I was preparing to leave I asked Larry if he wanted to come along. He hadn't finished his coffee yet or had breakfast but since it was a short hike; he decided to keep me company.

It's a bit of an adventure getting out of the campground but I knew about the area we needed to be so we headed in that direction and made it to the gate. As we were walking up the trail a hiker told us he was doing the Ridgeline. He had parked his car at Carney and rode his mountain bike around. I'm thinking he's already done a lot for the day and now he's doing the ridgeline. Wow.

It was a nice morning as we intersected from the Siphon Draw Trail to Jacob's Trail and headed northish. We followed that around to the intersection with Treasure's Loop. We only encountered a couple hikers by this point. We headed up Treasure Loop in and out of the sun and were able to get a couple cool pictures of the sun peeking thru the rock formations. We hooked up with Prospectors Trail and were in the shade all the way down to the Siphon Draw Trail.

And this is where the hordes began; they kept coming and coming. We made our way back to the campground where we ran into Karl and Kathy gearing up for their trek today. I was surprised they were starting so late but they can handle the heat. We wished them well.

Larry finally got his breakfast and I had some coffee. We chatted for a few hours before the first guest arrived. Eventually the others would come in after their hiking or chores or work. We had a great taco dinner, then some of us went to hear Dr. Sky where we also got to see the Space Station flyover as it was flying above San Francisco toward us. It's a bright white light; you wouldn't know it's the Space Station really but you can see it's flight path. Thru the telescope we got to see Saturn and the Andromeda Galaxy (2.5 million light years away). When we got back lots of folks were still hanging around so we visited some more. Tibberfest was not only for my birthday, it really was in honor of my brother's belated 60th birthday that he didn't get to celebrate and this was also his celebration of life as they say.

I took advantage of the morning weather to look for newborn snakes and volunteered my services to get their first baby pics. :D Some of the snakes did not appreciate my efforts, but they'll thank me later.

I hunting around Lost Dutchman SP. I saw hikers in the distance, and I assumed they were out doing the same thing I was doing, so I let them be. I saw 4 baby snakes. One was clearly not ready to be photographed. He just got done eating a large meal. He was so stuffed that he couldn't move or even rattle his tail. It looked like he tried to coil, but he probably couldn't strike anyway. He probably used all of his venom on the meal. I didn't want him to throw up just so he can pose properly for the photo, so I let him go.

My favorite snake was the lightly colored gopher snake, though she was a bit too anxiety for me to get decent photos, but it was the lightest colored gopher snake that I've even seen. She was not a newborn. She was at least a year old. A natural blond beauty, but not so good modeling for the camera.

The third snake was very small but had distinct markings. He appeared to be a rut.

The time, distance, and AEG is a guess. I saw 3 snake right away and within a few 100 yards of each other. The last snake, the fat diamondback, was spotted closer to the end of the hike. I think the only reason that I saw it was because it was too fat to move into a hole or take cover.

First time camping at Lost Dutchman SP.
We used the park as a base camp for 3 days.
We had site #54 for 2 nights, 11/29 & 11/30.
Nice campgrounds with great views of the Superstitions.
Days were warm, nights were very chilly.
Would camp at this park again!

Day 2, Hike 2 of the TibberFest/60th Birthday Bash. 13 of us would be hiking this Loop, well part of us anyway as some would go back from Palmer Mine to go up Siphon Draw. I can't tell you how much this made me :D smile to have so many people to hike with that I've hiked with over my short time hiking. I am one lucky hiker.

Larry had the route, Larry got nominated trip leader. He got us to the mine but was a little nervous about herding 12 cats. I can't remember what my niece asked Larry but his response was, "I usually hike alone." Oh well, not today. We headed up the trail from the Main Campground via the Mining Camp restaurant trail, merged with Siphon Draw and then turned at the trail that goes to the left after the Crosscut.

It was a bit warm and we were anxiously hoping to get to the shade of the mine. We could have gone on Jacob's to Prospector to get to the shade earlier but that was a steeper climb. The mine adit has a lot more overgrowth then when I was here last with Ambika. The mine has a great history though and I forwarded that to the non-HAZers so it will hopefully make it more memorable for them (I'll test them the next time I see them ;) ). We goofed around here and enjoyed the shade a bit before continuing on via some dips to the Prospector Trail intersection. We had the option to take it back down or continue on for a larger loop. It was no-contest as everyone opted for the bigger loop (it was a matter of time out on the trail for those that had later plans).

So the nine of us continued, visited for a moment at the Treasure Loop intersection and headed on down to the Jacob's Crosscut. Most folks had not done this trail or this hike so it was new and a nice way to start a Sunday. Larry and I lingered behind as the others picked up the pace.

Back at the campground, folks finished packing up and went their separate ways. It was nice of my brother to bring out Snowball as it came in handy for storage and late afternoon shade. Others brot food or wood or charcoal and it all worked out very well. It is a very nice campground and having the food truck come out for Saturday's meal worked perfectly. To finish off the weekend, we stopped at the Mammoth Steakhouse for lunch (great skins and wings; lucky for me Ambika gives me the leftovers to take home) with Wade & Mary Jo and Wendy & Ambika.

Thursday, Chumley got a few of us together (for those who couldn't make the weekend bash due to a backpack trip at Powers Garden) to celebrate the real 60th at the AZ Wilderness Brewery so that was a nice way to cap off my second 30th Birthday. As I've told others, I actually think I wouldn't mind turning 60 all over again cuz this was way too much fun :y: !

after running my mouth about hiking 5024/flatiron sunday morning, I found some good excuses to do the palmer mine loop with the group
started up the siphon draw trail, then cut north on a trail that went near some tailings, a piece of pipe, a filled in looking area and a couple of blast holes
wandered around a bit, then continued on
returned on treasure loop and Jacob's crosscut
first hike with wendy and sarae, nice to see ambika again, along with a non-haz member, lori
this was the right choice after all ;)

The purpose of this one night camp was as a base before driving Forest Road 10 the next day. After picking up my Bulldog Canyon OHV Permit at the Mesa Ranger Station, it was back out to the park to relax and enjoy the desert setting. Very peaceful. :D
