First eight-mile hike since heart valve repair in November. Four miles in on Tin Trough Springs Trail #308 from the Williamson Valley Trailhead. On the return to the trailhead, there are views of the San Francisco Peaks and both Williamson and Chino Valleys. Both ways there are surrounding heaps of granite boulders and formations a mile and a half west of the trailhead (see photos).

This was my fourth hike after heart surgery, starting from Williamson Valley Trailhead like the first three hikes. I wanted to do six miles, so I didn't get to go as far down Tin Trough Springs Trail #308 as I would have liked. On the route, you can see where I didn't see an easy way to ford a tributary of Mint Creek on the way west. Once I got across, there was no easy way to return to the trail, so I ended up doing a little bouldering to avoid the desert holly. The photos include views of Mint Creek and the tributary, as well as the lone flower I saw.

This was my third hike after heart surgery, starting from Williamson Valley Trailhead, like the first two hikes. I wanted to do five miles, so instead of just doing the loop consisting of Tin Trough Springs Trail #308, Mint Wash Trail #345 and Willow Trail #347, when I reached the junction of Mint Wash Trail #345 and Willow Trail #347, I turned south on Willow Trail for 3/4 mile. There is a waypoint on the route where Mint Wash Trail overlooks petroglyphs. An unmarked short trail leads down to the petroglyphs.

This was my second hike since mitral heart valve repair in mid-November 2023. Starting and ending at the Williamson Valley Trailhead, it was half a mile further (than the north end of Willow Trail #347 to its junction with Mint Wash Trail #345) for a total of 3 miles with more uphill than Willow Trail #347. In addition to the gradual climb on Tin Trough Springs Trail #308, the north end of Mint Wash Trail #345 has a much steeper section than Willow Trail #347 which is downhill on the way south and gets the heart and legs pumping a little extra northwards on the return to the junction with Tin Trough Springs Trail #308. In addition to immediate surroundings of chaparral, there are views of the San Francisco peaks snowcapped in January.

This route includes all of Mint Wash Trail #345, plus the first 0.8 mile of Tin Trough Springs Trail #308 from the parking lot of Williamson Valley Trailhead. I'm calling this route Mint Creek Trail #345, because on January 14, 2023 the waters in Mint Wash were in full flow, requiring the use of stepping stones on a half dozen crossings in the south half of the trail, even with waterproof boots. The waters in Mint Wash and its tributaries provided an accompaniment for the hike, twice in stereo as tributaries came down from the north.

About 1.5 miles from the Williamson Valley Trailhead there is a fishhook departure from Mint Wash Trail #345 to view petroglyphs. When you find the sign with the natural rock house on your left, climb the trail behind the sign to view the petroglyphs on a nearly horizontal rock (see photos).

A few years ago, I posted a Memorial Day wildflower hike in the Spence Springs Basin. This hike on Labor Day weekend of 2022 after two and a half months of monsoon rains rivals that hike. I started on Tin Trough Spring Trail #308 from the Williamson Valley Trailhead near Granite Mountain. Then I veered north on a trail that was easier to follow than Trail #308 which had plants so thick on both sides that the trail was obscured. The recorded route leaves the trail on the way back to take photos and do some rock scrambling and bushwhacking to eventually return to Trail #308. It was a treat for four senses: beautiful flowers, including fragrant Mexican cliffrose on both sides of the trail at one point; the soft caress of whiteflower prairie clover that often obscured the trail; and the pleasing sound of babbling brooks.

A redo of a hike we did 5 years ago as a Plan B. This one is a treat after it rains. With a week of monsoonal moisture. There was water everywhere. Added bonuses, the color Green and flowers everywhere!

We started at Tin Trough #308 and followed the same CCW track as last time, with a twist. I'd noticed a use trail that dropped down into Mint Creek Wash. We could hear the water prior to seeing the water. Pretty area with granite boulders and running water. The trail crisscrossed the flowing Mint Wash several times, which had us scattering to find dry crossings.

Back on the Tin Trough Trail we rollercoastered over to the North Granite Trail #261. I had a 2nd detour planned, but we only took it as far as Baker Spring to check it out. The rest of it looked a bit to overgrown.

We took lunch at the first available shade Cedar Spring trail #41. Up to Red Hill Tank this is a 2 track.
**Public Service Announcement** Do not do what we did twice. On the original hike we followed a FS TOPO trace of #41 past Red Hills Tank. On the 2nd hike 5years later I'd forgotten how much of a BS Bushwhack this was and we re-traced our steps through the crap. There IS an actual trail that can be found if you continue on through the gate at Red Hill Tank. It is clearly visible on satellite view and will save battles with sharp pointy and scratchy stuff. Around Cedar Spring we were back on trail and in better moods.

White Rock Spring Trail #39 finished out the climb to Blair Pass.

The views change up again from here, once on Granite Mountain Trail #261. Tall ponderosas and impressive views of the faces of Granite Mountain.

We stopped briefly at the water faucet at Granite Basin to top off. There were quite a few people enjoying the lake.

Now we are on Mint Wash #345 headed back to the barn. This is my favorite trail on this loop, followed closely by Tin Trough, then Granite Mountain. The water here was also flowing well.

Cool breezes and scattered clouds made the weather almost perfect for August...and did I mention the all green out there and the flowers?

Bruce suggested this and a Sedona option. Rare to choose against Red Rock but I thought this might be the better option with so much recent accumulated rain. It was immediately obvious, miracle grow green-fest was in full swing. A mile in, we could hear Mint Wash running down below. Bruce had a variation vs the loop we did in 2016. He was excited as it seemed prime. It was running clear, wide, and seemingly impossible to cross staying dry like Sutherland Wash.

Some people take it for Granite but this is probably the nicest weather ever in August. Scary grasshoppers that sound like snakes complete the package experience. I recalled two notable positives and two negatives about the loop. It drags a little on the backside and then there was the bushwhack. Bruce didn't recall the bushwhack until we duplicated the mistake.

The positives are strong. From Blair Saddle to Mint Wash is a mighty inspiring stretch with a few huge pines and the best views of Granite's namesake. Albeit a bit rollercoasterish, Mint Wash Trail is a fab trail.

Synopsis
If good hikes have moments of adversity, this is a good one. The early-on creek crossing returned painful wet feet despite several breaks to attempt drying out. Flora was pretty cool as expected. Occasional clouds and a better-than-average breeze. In the end, worn out in a good way.

Granite Mountain up, down, and around. Not sure how I settled on this one, I guess the no-fee Wednesdays help. Cloudy weather, 80 in Prescott, with a short-ish drive. Started at the Granite Basin Rec Area a little after 6am and went clockwise.

Granite Mountain Trail probably the best trail of the day. Not for the sparse pines lower down but for the climb through the granite up the mountain. Went to 7185 first. Nice lookout over Granite Basin. Not something I'd climb, and I'd skip it for the high point coming back. The most beautiful part of the mountain was probably the 7626 spur jct. Maybe the campsite down the trail. Not many pines left, whole lot of rocks. Light bushwhack and scramble up to the summit. Lots of spur trails add confusion. Final climb was super fun, the views top tier for the area.

Back down to White Rock Spring. Nice views toward the mountain. Cedar Springs is a single track to Red Hill Tank. After that a decent road covered in blue wildflowers. West side of the mountain no traffic, but not as scenic as the East side. Lonely forest of juniper and brush. North Granite is also a double track that leads up and around the mountain. Not much of interest besides some mines at the Almosta jct.

Tin Trough was a breath of fresh air. Well maintained single track with good views and forest higher up. Second favorite trail of the day. Some folks out for a walk below the Baby Granite Trail jct. Mint Wash another trail in great shape. Up on the hillside to the North with good views toward Granite Mountain, down into the beautiful wash to the South. Back to the lake and through the open pine forest around the Rec Area via West Lake and Metate Connector.

First time to the Williamson Valley TH, I was surprised how busy it was. It's nice to get a different view of Granite Mountain. I didn't look into this trail at all before I went, it started out extremely busy but they seemed to be heading a different direction. There was immediately a creek crossing, which was a bit of a surprise, it was no issue staying dry. This trail will take you right along the boundary of the Granite Mountain Wilderness, which I hope to take on all in one go some day. Today I just wanted to get a few miles in and see some new ground though. This ended up being a really nice trail, with good terrain, interesting rock outcroppings and views of Granite mountain. There's no trouble following the trail, though there are a few places you can take a wrong turn and it looks like you'll just end up at somebody's house, obviously take the other route.

Old man doc eagle and I set out in the rain on #308. The area got hit pretty good by waves of storms just prior to our arrival. This impromptu loop hike was not what I expected. Rice paper silhouettes of Granite Mountain captivated our attention. That serene sight through the rain was rudely interrupted by the music of nature echoing in the distance. Dry creeks flowing like rivers may be the best therapy on earth. The bickering and back n forth jokes gave way. Our pace went from pastel to deep contrast. "Hey check this out", then we raced to the next ravine.

The party was over by #671 when the sun started dissolving the clouds. Still a nice hike on trails I doubt many hikers experience. We found a semi shortcut near Shroder Tank but Bruce isn't a Ricky fan and complained about the missing c.

We turned the corner on #41 just before noon to bring the loop home. 20 minutes later we stopped for lunch. Bruce had a special Oreo sampler session arranged. We flavor profiled Mint Oreos vs Thin Mint Oreos. I taught him how we use our tongues to observe the oreo, but also, once you swallow the oreo, the mint aroma changes because you're receiving it retro-nasally.

The trail petered out at Red Hill Tank. After hopscotching through chaparral we found upper Tonto Wash traveled much easier. Bruce either had an adrenaline kick or oreo flash backs and was off to the races!

Granite Mountain was spectacular approaching Blair Saddle. I love the forest from the saddle down to Mint Wash. It was a first for me along Mint Wash Trail #345. This trail is a winner, especially after heavy morning rain storms! The upper NE third where it gets away from the creek is just okay but made for a nice loop.

Needing to get a hike in after I was sidelined last week for the first time with an injury, Joe planned a Crown King hike as our destination. Mother Nature had other plans. We reached a place on the road to Crown King, just North of Bumble Bee, where we didn't feel safe crossing the flow across the Road. This is just south a bit where Castle Creek goes Under the Road. :next: https://youtu.be/3_ ... QiMo.

We headed to Prescott

Commercial:
Using the power of the HAZ engine, we turned to Route Manager to develop a route to hike around Granite Mountain on the fly. It was completed and loaded into Route Scout on 2 mobile devices, before we arrived at the Williamson Valley Trailhead

We did a CCW loop of Granite Mountain, starting on the Tin Trough Springs Trail #308 in a light rain and 58 degree. Tin Trough Springs #308 was actually running strong in spots. This is a bit of a roller coaster trail with good views to Granite Mountain and Baby Granite Mountain.

Just past Baby Granite Mountain, you turn on to and old 2 track that's North Granite Mountain #671.

Next it's on Cedar Springs #41. This is two track to Red Hill Tank, after that we found no trail until we got close to Cedar Spring. The best bet here, is to just follow the wash. The travel is much easier. This trail does not get a lot of traffic, but was easy to follow from Cedar Spring to White Rock Spring Trail #39.

This trail is a steady climb to Blair Saddle and Granite Mountain #261. It's here we saw our first hikers and runners of the day.. Not having the time or the energy, we bypassed the climb and continued to Granite Basin Lake. It's a small but picturesque lake.

Mint Wash Trail #345 was our last Trail for the day. The rains had the wash running real well. This is a pretty trail to hit if you are in the area.

We made the best out of a Plan B and were able to hit some new trails.

The day’s priority was some personal biz in the Prescott area. Things took longer than anticipated, and before I knew it, I was scrambling to reach the Williamson Valley TH, [which appeared to be the closest and most straightforward near where I was]. Given how I really had to wing it, the easy loop I ended up doing proved to be such a pleasant surprise.

Initially I was contemplating the Mint Springs Figure 8 portion of The Eagle’s badpumpkin 20+ mile route - [ gps route ] however, with barely 2.5 hours of daylight, it soon became clear there was no way it was happening before dark. After some technical difficulties with Route Scout during the first mile or so, I finally got the app to behave and the topo came in extremely handy for some spur of the moment freestyling.

The loop I did kicked off down Tin Trough Springs #308, [which I think might be a different trail than any of the ones in The Eagle’s route that I posted above… Route Scout was misbehaving when I started the hike so I had to take a guess!]. After about a mile, I hung a left onto the Mint Wash Trail #345, and about 1.2 miles after that [at the middle of the figure 8], continued on the Willow Trail #347, heading toward UN 5549.

The 30 second scamper up UN 5549 was as easy as it gets, thanks to having tons of well-beaten routes to choose from. When I reached the top, it became obvious as to why such a tiny, remote, unnamed little hill would get so much traffic: ruins! Not having had time to read trail descriptions for all the hikes I’d planned out in the area, the ruins came as a very pleasant surprise. They’re nothing like the amazing ruins at the Wupatki NM, [but much better than Circlestone in the Sups], and definitely a treat when you’re out for a quick hike and not expecting it.

After UN 5549/the ruins, I continued a short ways down the Willow Trail #347 while contemplating my options. I wanted to be back before dark, [which wasn’t happing if I opted for the full figure 8 loop], but I really liked the idea of a figure 8 loop… and if there was a way to work in some additional AEG, all the better. Enter UN 5619, a tiny little UN “peak” that I noticed on Route Scout’s topo, situated right in between the Willow & Mint Wash Trails. As I passed by a small, sandy wash with almost no brush and some fun looking boulders, [which happened to be headed right toward UN 5619], I took off into the wash and headed toward the small peak without a second thought. The bushwhacking was very easy, and there were even some faint routes. Although there wasn’t much elevation to be gained, the short scramble up to and down from UN 5619 provided just the right amount of added fun I was looking for.

After UN 5619, the Mint Wash Trail was a hop, skip, and a jump away. Just before the turn off to Mint Springs, I saw a skunk a short distance off the trail in a lush grassy area. It didn’t seem afraid of me but after taking a few steps toward it for some pics lifted it’s tail… at which point I decided it was probably best to not get any closer and continued on my way. Mint Springs was dry but there was some light flow and pretty pools along Mint Wash, which I’d crossed over just before connecting with the Mint Wash Trail.

Upon reaching the center of the figure 8, I was preparing to jump on the Willow Trail #347, which would take me back to the TH and complete the loop. Daylight was running out fast, but I couldn’t resist making one final enhancement to the loop: hitting up UN 5482 and then rejoining the Willow Trail #347. For only 2.5 hour on the trails, this loop did not disappoint!

It's a nice area with lots of easy loop possibilities and very nice trails. 90F in the valley but cooler here, 63 at start and 69 at end. Saw one deer.

Big counter-clockwise loop all the way around Granite Mountain Wilderness starting/ending at the Williamson Valley trailhead, with a side trip up Granite Mountain. Nice to have flowing water in many of the drainages.

Came back here and did the butterfly loop.

It's a nice area with lots of easy loop possibilities and very nice trails. A chilly 49 when we started and 61 at end. It was surprisingly quiet today, we only saw one mtn biker on the trails. There were a few people at the lake.

We hadn't been to the southeast part of Granite Basin Recreation area so we did a double loop using the trails in the area.

Williamson Valley TH :next: Willow :next: Willow Connector :next: West Lake :next: Chimbly :next: Mint connector :next: Mint :next: Tin Trough :next: TH.

Most of this area was closed due to the Doce fire but it reopened last Thursday. You encounter the edge of the Doce fire near the north end of Mint Wash trail and some areas where you see fire retardant residue.

Enjoyed the area and views - it reminded me a bit of the Payson trail system (PATS).
