Warning: this route includes climbing up a steep slope strewn with rocks and bushes. It's not too bad uphill, but I wouldn't have wanted to try to come back down that way. The route also includes a well-worn path between Salida Gulch Trail #95 and Salida Connection Trail #9263 that I had hoped to find. Using that path is longer in distance to get to the top of the knob, but shorter in time. This route was a first attempt to find an alternate way to get to Salida Trail #93.

Kind of a last minute plan, decided after I woke up to head to Prescott. Had the Salida Gulch area on the mind, and saw some maps suggesting Sevenmile Gulch could potentially allow for a bigger loop. Didn't really have a plan or do any research, though. Got to Ranch TH and jogged down to Lynx Ruin TH, then followed the road to Salida Gulch TH. Followed the trail up the bottom of the drainage to the spring, then found the junction for the connector down to Lynx Lake. Didn't know if this was an actual trail or just a line on a map, but since it was marked, I took it.

Got to the lake, now headed back toward the car, and decided I have enough energy for a diversion, so I headed through the culvert under Walker Rd to Sevenmile TH, and headed up. Didn't know this trail system allows motor vehicles, but only saw two motorcycles on trail so NBD. Lots of motorcycle trails heading off every which way, so didn't know if I was on the right trail, but figured eventually I'd hit the circle trail if I kept heading west. After a steep climb out of the gulch, hit a T junction, and headed north. After about a half mile I came upon the Ranch Trail connector.

Ranch Trail was a lot longer than I would've liked, but at this point I at least knew that this would bring me back to the TH, so that was nice.

Weather was good, just a few sprinkles while on the ranch/circle trail, and about as temperate as one can expect this time of year.

I started from my campsite at Lynx Campground, took 305 to 311 to 94 to Salida Gulch and completed the entire loop. This was a great trail run with a tremendous amount of variety.

This was plan B seeing as the TNF is still closed. Our planned hike below the rim will have to wait. We got to the north shore trailhead for a 6:30 start and we were the second car there. It was jam packed on our return. We went CCW (route shown in photoset) to get past the camping and fishing areas quickly as to minimize our contact with people the rest of the hike. Not because of Covid, just cause we don't care to see other people most of the time. :D It worked. We were alone most of the time seeing only a handful of hikers all morning.

We did a side hike up and back on the Hilltop Trail #312 for some gain and just to see it. A short but very pretty trail. Cathy hasn't fallen in quite a while so she was due. She got it over with early on and all is well. I was behind her and it appeared to happen in slow motion as is the usual. On the southern finger of the lake we went past the normally used crossover to head back north and instead followed a little used and very vague trail farther south. This was a great decision as we saw some lovely areas of rock outcroppings and a running stream flowing over some beautiful bedrock formations. We ran across a couple of hummingbirds taking a bath in the stream. :) [ photo ]

We continued the circumference hike on Trail #311 until we hit the John's Tank Trail #94. We took this east to it's terminus with the Salida Gulch Trail. The Salida Trail looks neat and we plan on coming back to hike that loop from a different trailhead. The hike up to Johns Tank was tougher than we thought. The cloud cover we had been blessed with up to this point disappeared and it got very hot and humid. Mid 90's...don't know the RH but we were soaked. :( There were some unknown and unseen bugs that kept buzzing our ears. Never saw one but they sounded like a single engine Cessna. The downhill back to the car was a welcome relief. We saw some nice critters and plants and will show them in the photoset.

On the way back home we stopped at Lucky's BBQ in Dewey for some take-out on the recommendation of our friend Bob [ photo ] who lives in Prescott. Bob, the ribs rock and so do you... thanks!

We started off along the east alignment of Walker Road and hiked northeast towards 311. Once we hit 311 we headed over to the dam and continued east to 94 and up the hill along 94. Once we reached the intersection of 94/95 we continued south along 95 approximately one-quarter mile, where we bushwhacked our way to Benjamin Gulch/Lynx Creek. That wasn't too fun but the 'trail' we were on hadn't seen much use so it was a decent bit of isolation. There are all sorts of side trails around this area and you can definitely choose your own little mini adventure if you just want to get outside for some exercise. Once we made it to the creek we crossed over the dam and up to Hilltop Campground and made our way over to 305. Once we were on 305 we hiked down to the smith Ravine TH where we decided to turn back around and make our way back to the car. As expected this area had hoards of people for a Saturday morning but I think we timed it fairly decently as the hoards were showing up later in the day as we were finishing our hike.

Lastly, we saw the beginnings of a wildfire in-between Black Canyon City and Anthem.

Hopefully in two weeks we plan to do something a bit more challenging and isolated.

Radmila wanted to take a trip up north to see some fall color and get away for the weekend after the kids' fall break. I know she likes lakes and water, so I suggested Lynx Lake. I had been wanting to check this area out for a long time and I'm glad I finally got a chance to do it.

We left a little earlier than they're used to, but with the limited parking in this area, it seemed like a good idea. the parking wasn't actually too bad, but when we started there weren't too many people and by the time we were done, there were quite a few more.

the fall color was a somewhat limited, mostly shades of yellow and a bit of orange here and there. Still nice to see something, however. My weather app said it was 44 when we started, but it felt like a lot warmer than that. When we finished and had lunch in the shade, it did seem cooler.

we hiked counter clockwise around the lake, starting from the north shore. By the time we got back to the north end again, we decided to take the Johns Tank Trail out and back for a bit to add some mileage, and get away from the loud family hiking behind us whose kids where throwing rocks into the lake while singing/chanting kids' songs.

I stopped on the Johns Tank Trail just a little bit before its terminus. I didn't have a map so I didn't know it junctioned with Salida Gulch just another 0.1 mile or so ahead. that 0.1 mile was down a rather steep hill, and going down just to come back up didn't seem like much of an idea anyway.

Got back and had lunch at the picnic area and headed back to Phoenix. I-17 NB was backed up for several miles from the dreaded Black Canyon Devil's Corkscrew. Not sure if maybe there was an accident. Glad we started early.

The day didn't go quite as planned. After having a very short night, the wife and I dropped our daughter off for a hosting event and then we drove up to Prescott. I thought we might hit some trails, do some driving and then hit Crown King on the way home. We get up there a little after 7am, pull into the Seven Mile Gulch TH and...... fell asleep. Literally, we drive all the way up to Prescott to nap in the car for the first two hours. Having said that, it was a very nice nap. The early morning temps were cool in the shade and the slight breeze brought in the smell of the pines.

My wife, not being a huge hiker, we had planned on doing a couple of short hikes. The first of which, was the John Tanks Trail. This trail can be accessed in several ways, but the most direct route is from the north end of Lynx Lake. We paid the 5 dollar park fee and headed clockwise around Lynx Lake. It takes about .25 miles to get to the John Tanks Trail. It is located on the very northeast corner of the lake. We had tree framed views of the lake for the first 100 yards but the trail quickly headed east into the trees. The trail from this direction is primarily uphill with some flat stretches thrown. Nothing too strenuous, though some of the hills are rocky and somewhat eroded. The first half mile was nice being in the trees, but as we climbed the trees became more sparse and the terrain became more scrub dominant. The high point of the trail gave us an ok view of the surrounding area. Many of the hills to the east and south were taller but we had a decent view to the west. We hiked down to the Salida Gulch trail and turned around. We didn't see any wildlife on the trail except for lizards and horny toads.j
