This was plan B seeing as the TNF is still closed. Our planned hike below the rim will have to wait. We got to the north shore trailhead for a 6:30 start and we were the second car there. It was jam packed on our return. We went CCW (route shown in photoset) to get past the camping and fishing areas quickly as to minimize our contact with people the rest of the hike. Not because of Covid, just cause we don't care to see other people most of the time. :D It worked. We were alone most of the time seeing only a handful of hikers all morning.

We did a side hike up and back on the Hilltop Trail #312 for some gain and just to see it. A short but very pretty trail. Cathy hasn't fallen in quite a while so she was due. She got it over with early on and all is well. I was behind her and it appeared to happen in slow motion as is the usual. On the southern finger of the lake we went past the normally used crossover to head back north and instead followed a little used and very vague trail farther south. This was a great decision as we saw some lovely areas of rock outcroppings and a running stream flowing over some beautiful bedrock formations. We ran across a couple of hummingbirds taking a bath in the stream. :) [ photo ]

We continued the circumference hike on Trail #311 until we hit the John's Tank Trail #94. We took this east to it's terminus with the Salida Gulch Trail. The Salida Trail looks neat and we plan on coming back to hike that loop from a different trailhead. The hike up to Johns Tank was tougher than we thought. The cloud cover we had been blessed with up to this point disappeared and it got very hot and humid. Mid 90's...don't know the RH but we were soaked. :( There were some unknown and unseen bugs that kept buzzing our ears. Never saw one but they sounded like a single engine Cessna. The downhill back to the car was a welcome relief. We saw some nice critters and plants and will show them in the photoset.

On the way back home we stopped at Lucky's BBQ in Dewey for some take-out on the recommendation of our friend Bob [ photo ] who lives in Prescott. Bob, the ribs rock and so do you... thanks!

Definitely needed to get away last week. But I had no energy and there was supposed to be high winds where I had planned, so I chose this instead. Got there before it even opened. Didn't realize that Wednesdays are Free Days or I might have rethought this one. But if I read it right, they aren't charging at all right now, but I don't think most got the Memo based on what I saw on a Free Wednesday. People also don't understand that Restrooms are closed and locked until we get a Vaccine or Herd Immunity, whichever comes first.

I birded, photographed, napped and just pretty much chilled myself around the Lake. The Birds totally kept me entertained on the first half of this Loop. An Eagle terrorizing the local Herons and the Herons getting pushy with the local Cormorants. And everybody's catching fish. :D By the time I got done with just the Lake Loop and Hilltop, I knew I didn't want to do the Salida Gulch Long Loop. Too hot and I wasn't feeling it, so I went to a Plan B.

Low-key out-n-back that included one of my favorite stretches of trail along the east side of Lynx Lake. Plenty of Gambel Oak for Trail #305 to be in the Autumn mix if you enjoy oaks in foliage. #305 lacks distant views but you do get pines all the way, typically a bunch. Used mostly by mountain bikers the tread is typically a three-foot-wide ribbon of smooth. That said there were maybe ten mountain bikers all day.

Lynx Lake was fab as always. Perfect temps and breeze except for the final two miles. Which then featured nice deep blue skies with light scattered clouds.

Bruce parted ways near the end to experience a hike I published 20 years ago. Nice'a the turtle to pop outta hiding and join in. I look forward to you joining in on the next 5k aeg catclaw revenge hike!

I haven't been hiking much so Kelly threw out a challenge. I accepted and we invited John along. I had three hikes in mind for this weekend (so I didn't have any excuses), but two were at the Mogollon Rim. This one didn't look bad. John and Kelly liked it too.

A serene start on the west side of Lynx Lake was followed by a nice trek through the pines on Hilltop, Homestead and Smith Ravine. If we had turned around at the top of Smith Ravine, this would have been an excellent out and back hike, about 16 miles round trip. We continued on. Spruce Mountain Road was kinda cool. We saw some relics from the mining days and some homes with really nice views. The first half mile or so on Watershed was rocky and exposed, a minor disappointment after the splendid areas we had passed through previously. It didn't last long, though; we were back in the canopy of trees soon enough. That is until starting down Seven Mile Gulch trail. Rocky, exposed and steep in parts, were it not for great company, good views, reasonable temps and a nice breeze, this trail might have been awful. We probably should have done that trail in the morning.

While the hike may not have ended as well as it started, it did not disappoint. This was an absolutely gorgeous day south of Prescott and it was great to be outside enjoying it. We enjoyed some snacks and cool refreshments back at the car before heading home. Thanks Kelly and John for a great time!

ray invited john and i to do this loop sunday
several other haz members have done it, and it's always looked interesting
got going around 8:00
went clockwise, a pleasant stroll along lynx lake first, then a short bit on hilltop
homestead rolled through ponderosa and oak forest
smith ravine went through an old burn for a mile or so, but even that offered good views and a breeze
the upper part was also through forest, and toward the top, we stopped for a coffee break
john had brought his backpacking stove and home roasted coffee and fired it up for an excellent cuppa
:) delicious!
topped out on spruce mountain road and followed that north for a mile or so
more enjoyable road walking than anticipated
next was watershed trail, which started out a little rocky but was partially in shaded woods
finished on seven mile gulch, which has been everyone's least favorite part
didn't care for the steep scree slides, but there were still good views
conclusion: counterclockwise - get an exposed climb on crappy footing done early
nice to hike in shady woods on new trails with the boys!

My favorite movies, not necessarily in order, are "Apocalypse Now" (not Redux), "The Godfather", "The Great Race" (with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, etc.) and "Billy Jack". I still get choked up when Billy rides off at the end, with "One Tin Soldier" playing. :lone:

Hopefully, I haven't told this story before, but when I first moved to Arizona in the Fall of '84, I drove through Prescott. As I drove down the street, I looked around and thought "I've seen this before. But where?" :-k It was Courthouse Square. Eventually, quite some time later, I realized that I had seen it in "Billy Jack", where it is part of many scenes, most famously where Tom Laughlin fights half the town. At that time, I had seen the movie once, 12 years before. Sometime earlier this year, on one of many drives past Courthouse Square to one hike or another, it occured to me to Google "Billy Jack" locations. Turns out Lynx Lake was where the Corvette scene was filmed. Thus, this hike was born. :D

However, Lynx Lake by itself is not long, maybe three miles, so to add enough miles to motivate me to fight Prescott traffic, I tacked on Homestead Trail #305, Hilltop Trail #312 (for the hell of it -- definitely not the miles) and, because my wife has bad feet, Lynx Ruins Trail #301.

Observations ...

The pit toilet at the Trail #62 trailhead is so high class it has not one ... not two ... not three! ... but four air fresheners. :o

Trail #305 is very popular with mountain bikes. The trail surface was covered with tracks the entire seven miles. Yet, I saw not one MTB.

Trail #305 crosses Walker Rd. once, and various Lynx Lake access roads more times than I could count. In fact, you are never more than a few hundred yards from Walker Rd. It was only in Smith Ravine, or on the east side of Lynx Lake, that I got away from traffic noise. On the bright side, you are also never far from one of many pit toilets.

Lynx Lake, however, is a very popular locals trail. The west half is paved, and has multiple benches. Bikes are not allowed on Trail #311, but there are lots of dog walkers and urban hiker-types.

I lost track of how many spider web strands were across the various trails, including one that was probably 20 feet from tree branch to ground.

Not many flowers, but a surprising amount of fall color, particularly around Lynx Lake (various yellows), and in Smith Ravine (which was turning brown a bit sooner).

To figure out where the "Billy Jack" Corvette scene was filmed, and then stand on that ground, was pretty cool. (And not all wierd like it would have been if I stood in Courthouse square doing the same thing. :D )

Looked good to me. No dry ring above the lake surface. Couple of side creeks trickling in. (In fact, none of the creeks appeared to drain *out* of the lake ...)
