My first side trip from the Potato Patch Loop was Stonestep Lookout, which revealed that I'd be hiking in snow for about a third of the day. The forest was burnt some on this side of Aspen Peak. It'll be hot through this section in the summer. Aspen Peak was mellow. I checked out the lower, eastern peak but wasn't keen on free climbing it, seemed sketchy. Planning on researching climbing routes for it later and this area as a whole. As with the second linked route, the third (Tipton Overlook) was also relaxed. The fourth and fifth linked were tough because of the snow. Postholing was necessary through the Aspen drainages and northern slopes to access Dinosaur Rock Overlook. I was the only tracks above the summit road crossover to the steep Hayden Peak Summit Road. What a wild antennae farm perched upon the granitic summit boulders! It was neat tunneling and ascending the stairs to the various summits. I skipped Hualapai Peak and a few other trails for a future trip next month. There's bigger fish to fry this month. Not the super loop today, but overall a nice, peaceful area lacking aircraft noise mostly. Occasionally vehicles could be heard below, but still not overly annoying. Thirty bucks for a campsite seems reasonable when compared to other similar areas, e.g. Idyllwild.

Coming home from a business trip we saw a mountain that was ripe for petros. So we decided it would also be a good time to hike into the joshua tree forest, having never hiked in the area before. We parked at Alamo Lake road and Date Ranch road. The petro mountain turned out to be a non petro mountain, so we set off to the northwest for a wander. Pretty cool and surreal area.

HAZ Joshua Forest Scenic Parkway hike description :next: [ Joshua Forest Scenic Parkway ]
Start at MM 27.0 for Roadside Picnic Table "launching point" :next: [ photo ]
Planned start at the State Trust Land access road met with locked gate :next: https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?l ... 0&t=h&z=18

Rendezvous at the Wickenburg McDonalds and headed off to Joshua Forest to disprove a conventional wisdom that the only place you can see a Joshua tree is in the California Mohave Desert, in particular, Joshua Tree National Park :next: https://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm and [ Joshua Tree National Park Trails ]
With our planned State Trust Land thwarted, went to plan "B" accessing Joshua Forest west of the roadside picnic area. Interesting off-trail hiking with only two negatives - hydro lines bisecting the forest about a mile west of Hwy 93 and hidden cactus spines that always seemed to find their way into a butt cheek!
We were treated to an Arizona sunset that certainly made up for any collateral damage.
Tres Alamos 4293 - Black Mtn hike has to be explored on a return visit :next: [ Sawyer Peak 4293 - Black Mtns - Tres Alamos ]

HAZ Hassayampa River Preserve hike description :next: [ Hassayampa River Preserve ]
HRP Trail Map :next: [ Hassayampa River Preserve ]
Sampled all the trails; Palm Lake Loop, Willow Walkway, Mesquite Meander, Lion Trail, and River Ramble.
I was surprised to learn that HRP is part of the Nature Conservancy :next: https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/r ... eserve.xml just like one of my favorite places in Arizona, Hart Prairie :next: https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/r ... eserve.xml
The Nature Conservancy acquired the site in 1986 and began rehabilitation from what originally was established as an 1880's ranch, then as an upscale resort circa 1930 that morphed into an RV site complete with full service concrete slabs. Let's just say the site volunteers are a fount of information!
I've heard from some of my birder friends that HRP is a primo bird watching spot. I can't comment too much since this was a mid-day visit - water birds were negligible save for a lone mallard in Palm Lake. HRP was definitely "hummingbird city" though.
I think I got my $5 worth visiting this little gem...
Photos to follow when I get the chance.

For those who didn't know, the Perseid meteor shower made its annual appearance this past weekend. Needing dark skies to get the full effect, I spent the night hiking around in Joshua Tree Forest taking photos of the Milky Way and meteors. I have to admit that I was pretty impressed with the show. Must have been in the range of 40-50 meteors per hour.

From my first trip to Joshua Trees National Park in California, I recall the Park Ranger informing some visitors that they won't find the U2 Joshua tree in JOTR because the photo was actually shot in Arizona.

I had that filed away as a future trek to find the Joshua tree in AZ. A little research proved the Ranger correct that the photo shoot wasn't in JOTR, but was incorrect in crediting Arizona as the location.

Still curious as to why the Joshua Forest area is a "black hole" on HAZ, I wanted to explore. I think a future trek into the Arrastra Mountain Wilderness may be on the "to do" list... :D
