No water throughout. No trail, had to hold phone to watch track throughout. Good hike otherwise.

Heading out like Johnny Mathis on a sleigh ride we found conditions delightful. Anticipated slow travel through Arnett Creek. Turn the record over. New song... Pretty views, morning light and running creek along the Legends of Superior Trail. Autumn foliage was getting underway on the walnut, cottonwood and willows(guessing). Oughta dazzle for a week plus. Unfortunately rain is forecasted for the holiday most will be available.

Dora's Apache Tear Expedition was a bust. After review, I clearly see my error. Failure to read... lol. Nonetheless, enjoyed the little side trip.

Continued on to Telegraph Canyon. FR4 just recently reopened. Word got out, we passed a small caravan of four wheelers.

Grafted in @kingsnake's Ocotillo dance looping over Hill 3464. While I lean light on culture geek vibes the rock walls are impressive. I'm no cow but getting over wasn't happening, around was the ticket. What really stands out are the views! Superior Municipal pimple on a flea Airport, Picketpost and a tight view of Telegraph Canyon. The royal king mentioned "I did not lay eyes on it." in reference to Filaria Spring. The_Bloodhound_Eagle scoured the vicinity utilizing SAR precision grid search and netted the same results. Back in Telegraph along an ol' long gone ranch of sorts was the lull of the hike.

Continuing West, NW then North around Picketpost we encountered a half dozen enjoying the day.

No one will believe it but I proposed a moderate hike and Bruce wanted to add in Picketpost Summit. Tired or not, the lure of AEG got me. Gave it a try and got 2/3rds up, past a majority of the dicey part. Just not quick enough to safely beat sunset so we aborted checking the mail.

Better than anticipated. Picketpost vicinity typically delivers late Nov.

I can't believe it has been almost 6 years since I've been out here.

#1 change from last time, there is an actual trail around Picketpost now... and a nice one.

Going clockwise on this loop, we enjoyed the morning light in Arnett Creek for some decent views. On the NE portion of this loop, we took a side trip on a portion of the LOST trail, attempting to find the Apache Tears area. No luck this time.

Back on the Picketpost Loop, to switch it up a bit, Joe tied in part of a @kingsnake route, taking us up to Hill 3464. Decent views from up there.

Rock Tank was full from the recent rains and big enough for a Kayak trip.

We attempted to get to the top of Picketpost on the way back, but were running short of daylight.

Fall colors should be good for the next couple of weeks on this loop.

I was looking around Superior, using Route Manager's FS Topo and satellite view for something interesting to do, when I noticed a very obvious, very straight line on the satellite. I zoomed in, and it sure looked like a wall. So, I whipped together a route and posted it as an event to see if I could snare any victims ... I mean partners. SpiderLegs fell for it ... I mean responded.

SpiderLegs got held up on I-10 due to a rollover. He called at 0600, saying he had moved a mile in the last 15 minutes. I told him I was surprised as the daily rollover usually did not occur until 0700. Eventually, SpiderLegs got to our meetup at the Burton Barr Library, and we headed out to Superior. As we approached the town about 0730, I asked if anyone minded skipping breakfast. (I had forgotten, and scarfed a burrito on the way to the meetup. 8-[ ) No one objected, so we turned down Mary Rd. As we approached the quarry along FR 4 / Telegraph Rd., it quickly became apparent that proceeding further would not be a career-enhancing move. Strictly high-clearance / 4WD. I parked early, kissed my wife, and off James and I went.

The hardest part of the hike was the up & downs on FR 4. I was hoping to have a go at Hill 3012, as it would doubtless have a killer view of the wet & woodsy parts of the Picketpost Circumference hike, but it quickly became apparent that despite the white hill not being that tall, it was surrounded by sheer cliffs beyond our ability to climb. [-( And we did not want to invest time searching for an easy route, as the main event was on the mesa to our left.

We got to Rock Tank in good time, despite me taking a bajillion pictures. (151, to be exact, of which I uploaded 112, and eventually settled on 63. ;) ) Rock Tank looked just as full as it had over a month ago when I saw it from afar while on the Wood Canyon Rim hike. It was being fed by a small creek, with low, but regular flow. We picked up an obvious foot trail from the tank towards Filaria Spring. Never did spot the spring, but it must be pretty healthy to keep Rock Tank full. From there, it was only another 150 feet up to the saddle.

Where the obvious foot trail continued east to the Wood Canyon Rim trailhead, we instead turned north, ascending 300 ft. to the top of the mesa. Awesome view of Telegraph Canyon. :o (And Picketpost Mountain ...) After a quick snack, we followed the mesa rim northeast. We spotted the apparent wall from a quarter mile away -- it is that large. And a few minutes later, we arrived, and it was indeed a wall, not some satellite anomaly. Coolios! Better yet, we found at least two more wall segments. :y: No pottery, or other signs of ancient civilization, but we certainly were not complaining. :D

Then it was a matter of finding the best way over the rim, back down to FR 4. SpiderLegs found us a real easy route over only two six foot boulders, and from there it was a steep, but otherwise easy stroll down to the road, and back to the trailhead.

Awesome hike: I plan on doing it again, exploring some other parts of the Hill 3464 mesa.

Started the morning by crawling down I-10 due to a semi that had jackknifed across three lanes. Spent 15 minutes between 91st & 83rd Avenues hoping that it was not an omen for the rest of the day. Got through the mess using my best Formula One moves and prayed that all of the cops in the area were back at the accident scene so I would not get a speeding ticket. Have to recommend the downtown branch of the Phoenix library for a great meet up location for folks from the north intersecting with us folks from the west valley. Second time this week I have met people there.

Once on the road with Kingsnake it was an uneventful trip out to Superior. Hit the trail and headed down a jeep road until we turned off for some minor bushwacking. All in all rather uneventful until we got to Hill 3464. Was excited to check out the wall before the hike and was not disappointed when we found it. Rather impressive display and built with defending the top of the hill in mind. Looked around fruitlessly for other artifacts or signs of civilization but did not see anything. My guess is that any settlements would have been further down the hill closer to water sources. The top of the hill provides a clear line of site for three different approaches to the area, so easy to set up a line of defense.

All in all a pleasant way to spend a morning. Looking forward to going back to the area and exploring some more.
