First hike of 2025. Our last hike was 8 weeks ago. We all agreed on no bushwacking, so this was a good choice. Did EJ Peak first, was smooth and pleasant, with good views of the Supersitions, Goldfields, Four Peaks, and Salt River. There were 3 people at the peak, saw no others. We descended back to the trailhead, crossed the street, and encountered at least 8 bikes on Lance's Trail in the first half mile. After we exited to Cactus Nectar trail, there were no bikes for the next 1.5 miles, and only 2 bikes total. The last quarter mile to the peak was steep with loose gravel, which slowed us down a bit. We went to the middle (main) peak, and enjoyed the beautiful views. Then we looped back on Alpe D'Huez trail, and encountered at least 10 more bikes along the way.

Beautiful day, perfect weather, great views, almost no other hikers, and about 15-20 bikes, with the constant gunfire providing our soundtrack. Gotta remain vigilant for bikes on Alpe D'Huez trail. The other parallel trails have far fewer bikes. All of the trails were exceptionally well maintained except for the last quarter mile to Usery Peak, where we all slipped a few times on the descent.

I invited son #2 and son #3 to come along on this sunset hike. Remarkedly, they agreed! This hike is always hike for sunset because of the great views to the west.

We opted for the direct route straight up the wash to Alp d'Huez Trail. With a slight turn on High Ridge Trail, we picked up the sketchy path up to the peak. I like hiking on these wide and smooth mountain bike trails.

The sunset was nothing special, but it's always nice to spend time with my adult sons. After the sunset show, we headed down and opted to stay out of the wash and took the Alp trail back to the trailhead/road.

We came across a couple of bikers on the way up, but had the trails to ourselves the entire time otherwise.

This hike is short with a little elevation and amazing views up top.

Note: I did this hike in conjunction with 2 other peaks - Peak 2959 (also known as Usery South Peak), and Peak 2933

I followed Dean Gaudet's route which was very helpful. I decided to bag Peaks 2959 and 2933 which were also included in his route.

The night before, I camped about 1.4 miles East of the Usery pass gate in the Bulldog canyon area. There was a $6 fee to enter the area which I paid online and printed a receipt. The road required 4x4 and I found a good campsite area that was private about 100 feet from the road. I did hear shooting from the nearby shooting range but that seemed to stop by about 8 pm. After 8 pm I heard a few 4x4 vehicles ride by on the main road but didn't hear anyone too late. I slept great and the overnight low was supposed to be around 50 F.

I started hiking Lance's trail around 8 am. Within a few minutes some mountain biker's passed me. With such a great trail, it was understandable that this was a popular area for mountain biking. But, I only saw a few mountain biker's and once they passed me, I didn't see them again. After reaching a junction, I went straight to continue on the Alpe D'Huez trail. Then, at the 3rd sign, I continued on the trail going to the High ridge. It was pretty steep getting up to the ridge, but once on the ridge the hiking was easier. I planned only on summiting Usery BM and Peak 2959 South of it. Tim T. told me someone put an American flag on Peak 2959 and it was only a few hundred feet from Usery BM so I thought why not. There was a "use trail" basically going all the way there. Following Dean's route, I also bagged Peak 2933 which was only 1/4 mile up and down from the main loop trail. All in all it was an enjoyable hike. The trails were well-maintained.

Stats:
-------
Total distance = 6.2 miles
AEG = 1,407 feet
Strava moving time = 2 hrs 54 mins
Strava elapsed time = 4 hrs 39 mins

I didn't actually make it all the way up to Peak 2972, just the peak north of it, which is a little lower. From the Ellsworth Road ATV TH, I took Lance/Alp d'Huez/Goat up to that peak, then headed down Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar. Once back at the TH, I did a quick climb up to EJ Peak and headed back down. Got done fairly quickly and got nearly 2100' AEG in for the morning.

Cool and breezy early on. It started to rain on my down Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar and stopped by the time I was back at the TH. The sun came out on the way up to EJ, then another storm started to roll in on my way down, which provided a lot of cloud cover that cooled it off again. Back at the TH, hail started to fall for about 5 minutes and then quit. Overall the weather was perfect. The mix of the sun and clouds gave some really nice and dramatic scenery all morning.

Started at the Lone Mt. TH adn was the first person there at 6am. Went up Lance's Trail, Alpe D'Huez and the Goat Trail, then took the unmapped trail up to the peaks. I followed the trail all the way to the third peak, but I didn't actually go up to the 3rd peak (2559). From the approach the north side of it, it didn't look like there was a good way to the peak, and it looked overly rocky. I went around it on the east side, but once I got over there, it looked like a faint trail might exist on the west side of it.

After the 3 peaks, I made my way down to the microwave tower road. The trail on the south side of the 3rd peak is faint and has loose footing, but it's definitely there. Once I got down to the road, I took the Hawes Trail to the Cactus Garden and up to the Upper Gidro. On the way back down I took the Iron Goat to mix it up a bit and at the junction of Iron Goat and the Cactus Nectar, I saw that a new trail that heads NE was done. I saw a biker take that trail, so I decided to take that and see where it went. The new trail is pretty steep and tailored to bikers with a few ramps. I didn't see any bikers coming down until I was near the bottom, then a big group came. I got off the trail while they went past then made my way back to the Lance's Trail and back to the parking lot. Once I got back, I was surprised at how many vehicles were parked there. The lot isn't nearly big enough and vehicles were parked all along the berm. It was very dangerous trying to get out on the road because of the vehicles parked right next to the lot on the berm that obstructed the sightline to the road.

The views up top in the area are as good as anywhere in the metro Phoenix area, IMO. You can see from the Mazzies, Four Peaks, Supes, Mt Lemmon, Newman and Picacho, and all the way to the Estrellas to the west. Didn't really see anyone until I got back on the Goat Trail and then it was pretty busy. It was much warmer than it's been lately, and on the way back down the gnats were starting to come out.

A spur of the moment decision to hit this one. I was slow at work and though “why not?”

I took my usual path up the sandy wash from Usery Pass Road to the Alp d’Huez Trail and then up the steep/sketchy “trail” to the saddle that starts off the High Ridge/A d’H junction.

The weather was perfect. I came across a few mountain bikers and a runner, but otherwise had the place to myself.

The clouds and sunset looked promising. I made it to the middle peak 2972 and then on to the rocky Peak 2959 before heading over to the northern most peak 2933.

Lots of scenery up on this one. Great views of the Goldfields, Four Peaks, Pass Mountain and the Mazatals looking east/north and amazing views of the western horizon.

The sunset was really beautiful. I stayed up until the colors faded. But, on the way down, it looked like there was a little afterglow going on. Oh well, it was an awesome way to end the day.

On the way down, I opted to skip the sandy wash and try out Lance’s Trail which takes you back to Usery Pass Road. I love the groomed trails in the Hawes system. Gotta dodge the occasional biker, but what a nice change from the rough and rocky Supes.

I am glad I decided to head out for this one. Nice exercise, fresh air, a chance to decompress/de-stress and a beautiful sunset for the cherry on top.

Couple of new geocaches popped up in the area so I bugged out of work early for my afternoon hike. Spent a little time up on top and further down toward Las Sendas. Looks like people trudge up from the east to swap out the flag every so often.

I decided to start the year off by bagging a couple of peaks, so I did these 2:
1) Lone Mountain/EJ Peak
2) Usery Mountains Highpoint/Peak 2972

I began by hiking up to Lone Mtn/EJ, and then when I got back to the parking lot I crossed the road and hiked to the Usery HP.

Lone Mountain/EJ Peak
This was a nice little hike -- short, scenic, and steep. There were a few people out on the hike, but not very many. The parking lot was full, so I was afraid that the trail would be crowded; but appears most people were mountain biking instead of hiking.

There were nice views of the Mazzies, Goldfields, and Supes -- I enjoyed this hike.

Usery Highpoint
I followed one of the tracks that @adilling posted, and it turned out to be a good and very efficient route. I figured that I would be doing some bushwhacking, but that was not the case. I started out in a wash, then went on a trail that was mostly used by mountain bikers, and then went on a use trail the rest of the way. The wash was a bit sandy, but not too bad. The mountain bike trail was nice to hike on, although there must have been 50 mountain bikers along the way (note to self: next time, go during the week instead of a weekend, especially a holiday weekend). The use trail was easy to follow, although it was steep and slippery in a couple of places. On the way down I maintained 5 points of contact in one stretch.

Synopsis
I enjoyed this hike -- it was a clear day and the views were nice. It was a bit windy on top of Usery, but other than that it was really nice hiking weather: sunny with temperatures in the low 50's.

Checking my handy-dandy sunset/sunrise estimator, I thought I would take a hike up to an area with a clear view to the western horizon and catch a sunset. This little trail (or it's twin brother across the street - Lone Mountain/Ej Peak) sounded promising. And, off I went.

The cloudy skies did not deter me as I needed to get in some exercise either way. There was a bunch of activity on the eastern side of Usery Pass Road, but it looked pretty empty on the west side. I started up the sandy wash towards the saddle of Usery Mountain.

I wanted to get "up top" as soon as possible, so I just took the fastest, direct route up. I know there's some sort of mountain bike trail that goes along to the north of the wash. I will have to try that path one day.

I made my way to the 2nd section of the hike and started up. I guess this is called the "OLD GOAT TRAIL" and is used by mountain bikers. I thought to myself that it is quite appropriately named when I am hiking on it for sure! I located the faint use trail that goes to the saddle and started the last push to the top. I always forget how steep this section is. It's thankfully a quick hike up to the saddle.

I was in the cloud shadow for most of the hike, but I could see the sun finally shining through across the street towards Lone Mountain. When I reached the saddle, the sun was below the clouds and lighting up the western slope of the mountain really well. I made my way to the tallest peak 2972 and signed the registry. I did not have time to it the rocky Peak 2959 to the south and instead started over towards the short peak, 2933.

The sun was really nice as it was approaching the horizon. Also, I could tell by the position of the clouds, there was going to be a really nice sunset. About 10 minutes after the sun dropped below the horizon, the clouds turned from yellow/white to pink and for a few minutes, bright orange and read. The skies behind me to the east were also lit up in beautiful pink and orange tones as well.

I made a wise choice to come up to this one for a sunset for sure. After taking a bunch of pictures, I reached in my bag for my headlamp, but discovered the batteries were dead. I managed to make it down to the truck without engaging my cellphone light. The trail is easy to follow along the mountain bike and wash portions, even in the dark.

Another day of exploration on the Hawes trail system. Hit up some of the newly opened mountain biking trails, including Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar. Really impressed with some of the trail work. Shared the trail with a whole family of javelina. There was about a dozen of them.

The last time I hiked up to this mountain, I came from the west side of the ridge. It was in the 90’s before the Las Sendas development started. I think they had just broken ground on the golf course. The land it was built on was a ranch formerly owned by silent movie star Tom Mix. My friend grew up near there and we hiked up to the top of Peak 2959 to see the sunset.

I accessed the peaks from the other side this time around. I have long wanted to go back up to these cool peaks and I decide to head up. I have been researching the hike looking at others triplogs. I opted for the quickest route up along the wash.

I parked at the Lone Mountain TH and walked across Usery Pass Rd. The first .60 miles is along the sandy wash. Besides steep scree, sandy washes are my least favorite hiking terrain. But, it goes quickly. You reach a split in the wash with a small rise in the middle. That is the trail up to the peaks. Lots of mountain bikers and horse riders use this area. The trail up was easy to follow and goes through a series of switchbacks and elevation gain. When you reach the base of the peak, there is the remnants of an old mine. The trail splits. I took the trail to the left. I believe the trail to the right heads off along the side of the northern most peak, 2933.

The final push to the saddle is steep and has some sketchy spots, but it’s a quick push up. Once you get to the saddle area, you can see all three peaks lined up. 2959 is rocky with a US flag, 2972 is the tallest and has a registry and 2933 offered the best location for the sunset (IMHO).

I hiked up to 2972 first, signed the registry log and took a few pictures. There was another hiker over on top of 2959, waiting for the sunset as well. I opted to not head over there because the sunset was about 10-15 minutes off. I hiked over to the northern most peak, 2933, and waited for the sunset.

The lack of clouds made for a subdued sunset. It’s still always a nice way to end a day, sitting on top of a peak watching the sunset.

After waiting for the afterglow, I got my headlamp out and started down. The hike down was quick and I made back to the Lone Mountain Trailhead. The sandy wash is nicer going down. I did empty a few pounds of sand from my boots when I got home.

A nice hike with great views. I will head up here again and explore the ridges a little more.

Roger's Son Brett down from SD for the week and wanted a couple of short hikes. We took him over Usery Peak 2972, stopped by HAZ's Jeep, they used to use for Ubber Rides to the various Trail Heads, Joe had turned it in as stolen, but the Police still have no leads, and the Insurance wouldn't pay the claim, and all of our Members have everyone's back so that's the story of why we now have to find our own way to the Trail Heads. Went up and said Hi to Crazy Horse then to the old Mine. Looked around no nuggets, went NW to the next ridge over and walked NE on the Wild Horse Ridge. Came up on the Coin Cairn and then further on another Coin Cairn, remember one of the HAZ'ers saying he put the 1st one down so in case his kids would never be broke, but had to get up on the Ridge to find it. :) Interesting Hike, seen a big Deer jumping along to get over the next wash so we couldn't take a picture, Roger thought it was a Jackrabbit --- Brett and I just looked at each other and kept on hiking :)

Spring Break (sort of), day one. The kid wanted to go to ASU for a jazz clinic, the wife wanted to go to the store to stock up on TP and hand wipes in case of the apocalypse, so that left me to run out and get in a little sunshine. Made a quick trip up to Peak 2972, then over to the slightly shorter neighbor to the south. On the way back down, I missed my turn and ended up to the west so I hooked into one of the Hawes System trails and made my way back over. Glad I made this detour as I ran smack into a tortoise on a hilltop (he was eating flowers... no joke), and then a second tortoise a little past the Usery Mine! Two in one day! What a prize! I added some mileage and elevation on a side trip to the ridge above the shooting range to grab a couple of geocaches and followed the ridge line back to the parking lot. Along the way I almost stepped on a rattler, but he let me know my presence was not appreciated.

On Sunday, I attempted to follow the Crazy Horse Loop. I used the route of that name posted by hikerdw to this site, but hikingaz2 has posted a similar route with the same name.

I didn't do especially well at following it, which is partly the reason for my mileage ending up higher than what they've posted. I also attempted to stay on the bike trails as much as possible, though in some cases, I stayed on them too long causing me to get seriously off route for a while.

Some of the trails that I hiked - when I did hike trails - can't be found (yet) on HAZ. Trailforks has them; the names that I use here will be mostly those shown on that site.

Starting from the Bulldog Canyon Trailhead, I crossed the road and took the NRA Access Trail. This was the first spot where I deviated from hikerdw's route. His route either followed the wash or some other less defined trail. I continued on the NRA Access Trail until I came to a fork. The right fork continues to be the NRA Access Trail. The left fork is called L'Alpe d'Huez. Okay, so I got confused here. I continued on the NRA Access Trail for a time and realized that I was going the wrong way. I considered going on and doing the loop in reverse, but decided that I wanted the steep and gnarly stuff out of the way early so that I wouldn't be doing it in late afternoon / early evening. I'm glad I made this choice. So...

Returning to the fork, I (correctly, this time) took the left fork which is the L'Alpe d'Huez Trail. As I proceeded up this trail, I found some rocks acting as a blocker for another trail which appeared (according to my GPS watch) to be where the route I was (sometimes) following joined L'Alpe d'Huez. I continued on L'Alpe d'Huez (which turns into the Goat Trail) until the ridge and even started over the ridge. My GPS watch told me that I was off route - I continued a bit further and discovered that I was really off route. I backtracked at that point and found another trail, this one for Peak 2972 - Usery Mountains, which is the name given by this site (HAZ).

That section of the trail leading to Peak 2972 was steeper, looser, and occasionally hard to follow. I ended up on the peak. To the south, I saw some flags on the slightly lower Peak 2959. As I backtracked off the peak, it wasn't clear to me how to continue the Crazy Horse Loop since the terrain here was quite steep. I continued to backtrack with the tentative plan to return to the intersection of Goat and L'Alpe d'Huez. But, as I backtracked, I sort of got lost doing so and ended up working my way (according to my GPS watch) back to the track for the descent for the Crazy Horse Trail. I continued working my way down the mountain and got off route again when I came across an indistinct path which led me back to the bike trail. As I continued a short ways further on this, my watch informed me that I was back on route again. As I continued on this trail, I encountered a sign which said "Upper Gidro Pass Tr No 66". Arrows pointing to the left (which was the way that I was going) were labeled "Cactus Garden" and "Hawes". The right pointing arrows were labeled "Goat" and "Alpe d'Hawez". I can't find any individual trail named "Gidro Pass" on Trailforks, though there is a loop (comprised of a bunch of trails) of that name. Also, "Alpe d'Hawez" seems like a better name than the one listed at Trailforks. In any case, I think I was on what Trailforks calls "Cactus Garden" at this point.

I stayed on Cactus Garden / Gidro Pass longer than I should have. It's a very nice and easy to follow trail. I passed the turnoff for resumption for the Crazy Horse Loop thinking that Cactus Garden / Gidro Pass might go to roughly the same place. As I continued, however, it became clear that it was taking me south when I needed to be heading WNW. I see now that taking Cactus Garden / Gidro Pass could have "worked", but it would have resulted in a much longer hike than I wanted to do on Sunday. This time, instead of backtracking, I simply headed downhill and made my way back to the track shown by my watch. This led me to a canyon with a sandy wash and some easy down-climbs. It was very pleasant.

The wash / canyon eventually led me to the Saddle Trail #51 (listed simply as the Saddle Trail on Trailforks). I took the Saddle Trail north until it ran into the Saguaro Trail. Heading east (and then north) on the Saguaro Trail brought me to an intersection with Twisted Sister. The sign at this intersection suggested that I might be able to see a mine if I continued on the Saguaro Trail, so I did this for roughly 1/4 mile which led me to the top of another hill. (Actually, it wasn't clear from the sign that this was still the Saguaro Trail. It seemed that it might have been the "Mine Trail" at that point.) The day was wearing on, so I turned around and eventually headed east and then north on Twisted Sister.

Twisted Sister intersected with Wild Horse, which I took east. I ended up taking a (slight) shortcut shown on Trailforks as Jumping Jacks Cut. This led to the NRA Access Trail, which I took back to the trailhead.

I saw only three other hikers - they were heading the other direction on Wild Horse. They told me that they had parked a car at each end so they only had to do it one way. I saw a lot of mountain bikers; they were all courteous and a few even stopped to let me pass.

I had fun on this hike - I enjoyed both the off trail and on trail portions of it. The Wild Horse Trail was better than I was expecting it to be. Also, the off-trail portions of it were good practice for learning how to use my new GPS watch.

My wife and I had intended to hike the Wild Horse Trail - AKA Lead Trail, but we ended up at the wrong trailhead. It was close, but wrong. But the hike that we did might have ended up being a more interesting hike than what we had planned, so I didn't mind...

We parked in the lot next to the west gate of the Bulldog Canyon OHV area. We began our hike by crossing the road and then crossing the fence. There is a well defined trail here that heads west. After about half a mile, we came to a fork - we went left which took us SW to start, but then in a more westerly direction over time. It was mostly uphill as we headed west. We eventually topped the ridge and started heading down the other side.

I wanted to keep going and somehow turn it into a loop - I was pretty sure we could find trails which would bring us back. But my wife sensibly pointed out the lateness of the day and our unfamiliarity with these trails - so we turned back.

When we got back to the fork in the trail mentioned earlier, I took the northern part of the fork and found that it ran into an area riddled with motorcycle trails. I selected one which took me west and once again gained the ridge. There were some loose and steep sections here.

When I got back to the parking area, I took the Maricopa Trail perhaps half a mile toward Usery Mountain Regional Park before returning.

I've plotted some other GPS tracks against the route I took. I found more than a few which matched up with at least some of what we hiked on Sunday. One of them corresponded to a route up to Peak 2972, though we did not do the summit. Another of the tracks which overlayed part of our trail was Darth Stiller's 13.29 mile loop which incorporated the trail we actually planned to do for the day - which was the Wild Horse Trail. I guess it was good that we turned around when we did because we definitely did not have enough daylight to do a 13 mile hike.

This area is riddled with trails - there's still a lot more to explore...

Ascent the hard way... straight up the steepest slope.
Dressed right for the occasion, I was cool despite 103 high temp during the hike.

This was my first hike of a daily double. Got to the TH around 5:30 with one vehicle already there. Crossed Usery Rd and immediately came upon a well used (to my knowledge unnamed bike trail). Since I am a "trail person" and this was going in the general direction that I wanted I decided to follow it. As it turned out, I THINK it worked out rather well. The reason I say think because I'm not quite sure if I achieved my objective - peak 2972. I followed this bike trail in a NW direction for abou .5 miles where it split. One branch continued north, keeping at the same elevation. The other branch continued a gradual climb going west toward the peak. Following the westward trail, I had to cross a wash at .9 miles. For such a well used trail, the wash crossing - at least on one side - was not designed, being steep and slippery. I can't imagine any bikers successfully transversing that section. The trail continues to gradually climb for another .4 miles. At just over 1.3 miles into the hike I started to negotiate some steep switchback. At 1.8 miles the trail reached an overlook (and what I think was the high point for the bike trail). At this point I left the bike trail, because it looked as if it was getting ready to descend. Just a few yards further past the overlook, I took a user trail (marked by a line of stones - almost like a threshold in my mind) the last 300 ft to the top of the peak. This section of the trail was easy to follow, though not as well defined as the biker trail. It was steep in sections, that I thought would cause problems coming down (but didn't). The trail deposited me at the top of a ridge line with a series of 5 "peaks". I checked them out right to left and none of them reached 2972 on my garmin. The highest was the middle one at 2906. That being said, these were the highest peaks in the area so either my garmin was off (naaahhhhh) or I was in the wrong area (possible, but unlikely). The views from the top were nice, but not incredible. However, I REALLY enjoyed my time up there! The weather was perfect. Cool temps with a nice breeze. And I had the peak(s) to myself. I usually don't "zone out" on hikes, but I found myself "zoning out" up there :D The far south peak had a tattered US and Canadian flag and the second northern peak had a transplanted ADOT sign. I was surprised NOT to find user trails coming up from the westward side. I could see activity on the Hawes Trail System below and I would have thought that system would have spiderwebbed to the top. Followed the same route going back. Encountered 10 bikers and 3 trail runners. The wildlife, though not fantastic, was abundant with liars, chipmunks and jackrabbits.

I was intending on knocking off this combo yesterday after school but the day sapped me. By the end of the day, I was ready for bed. Going on 2 weeks of being sick now and my immune system can feel free to step up at any time.

In the morning I decided that I'd try to get out of there ASAP, and then my wife crushed my dreams by informing me that I had to tutor until 3:30 today. Ok then. I am on my way to the trailhead by about 3:45. I arrive and get ready to go, firing up my GPS, and it can't find the trail anywhere. I quickly realize that I am at the wrong trailhead; the one I was at previously for the Usery Rd to Meridian hike I did a few weeks ago.

Upon finding the right trailhead I decide to head up to Peak 2972 first. I busted up the drainage until I accidentally bumped into the trail. The trail was surprisingly sleep and slippery near the end. Something about 1000's of bearing sized pebbles on bare rock. The views on top of the peak though are incredible! It would make a nice place for a night hike to catch the valley lights below.

Upon crossing Usery Pass Rd I started on the journey up to EJ. I am not sure if it was because of being tired and sick but the journey feels a lot longer than a mile up. The views were pretty good of Four Peaks, Superstition, and Weavers from up top.

Headed up to the Peak, but got late start and was getting warm, time to rethink our start times. Just got to the mine area and messed around and headed back.
