Original plan was to hit Wasson from the Hugh Norris Trailhead. A bitey fox changed those planes, as the lower half of Hugh Norris was closed. Headed over to King Canyon trailhead and got started from there a few minutes later.

Headed up King Canyon. Steady incline, but moderate. The trail is in good condition. Tons of flowers and varieties, which was a nice surprise. Windy at times, but it felt nice.

Took a short snack break at the summit of Wasson. Had to settle for pastrami today since I was all out of steak, but I survived. Headed down Hugh Norris Trail (the open part), then down Sendero Esperanza and Gould Mine. Again, lots of flowers. Saw a fair amount of hikers on all the trails. I like this loop, and would hike it more often if it was a slightly shorter drive. Good day, and always fun to hike with Kelly.

Linda and I originally planned to hike a Wasson peak loop from Hugh Norris trailhead
But, the trailhead was closed due to a rabid fox in the area
We did the shorter version from king's canyon trailhead
Got going around 0845 up king's canyon trail, then the spur to the peak
Took a snack break and admired the views
Lots of wildflowers along the way
Heliotrope, desert chicory, poppies and lupine
A nice enhancement for the hike
Took Hugh Norris, Sendero Esperanza and Gould mine trails to close the loop
Windy, comfortable temps
Quite a few people hiking
Very enjoyable hike
Thanks for driving linda
No rabid foxes were seen today :scared:

Two loops starting from Kings Canyon. Up gould mine, then esperanza to the TH. ran the dirt roads back to Hugh Norris TH. Took that to esperanza junction and back to car. Then back up Gould mine and Kings to Sweetwater to Wasson. Down Hugh Norris to Esperanza and back on Kings.

Pretty nice weather though very humid. Felt pretty good

I wanted to see how I did on the trail after starting to take some super beets heart chews, as well as nitric oxide gummies (also beet root extract). I noticed increased energy from better blood flow, plus the swelling in my legs and feet has really diminished over the past three weeks. In addition, my blood pressure readings have been coming down too. My heart doctor wants me to start taking a pharmaceutical (Eliquis) because of my Afib and age, but of course I will say no and look for other more natural options, plus low dose aspirin. : wink : Anyway, I really wanted to see how this translated on a hike. Wow! Best I have felt in more than a year, plus the strength and flexibility is back in the legs. :D No balance issues, and no need for trekking poles on this relatively easy loop. It was a test, and as of now I am pleased. I have been way too sedentary, so hopefully I won't be afraid to get back on the trail, as that works more magic than any drug ever will. :y:

Heck, I even have enough energy to head to Walmart to do a little shopping and restock the beer supply!

Great day for Wasson! Arrived at 10am and had to wait a half hour for a storm to blow over, then Michelle and I started. Pretty humid for the first hour or so, then it dried out.

I'M EXCITED that as I logged this trip, my AEG on hikearizona.com tipped the 1,000,000 feet mark. Finally!!

Got an early 0630 start from the King Canyon Trail Head. Trying to beat the heat up to Wasson Peak. Accomplished this with the help of a sporadic light cloud cover. All the trails are in excellent condition and this made the continuous climb to the peak a lot easier. Saw 3 people at the peak ahead of us and about a half dozen coming up as we were heading down. Stopped and checked out the mine just before hitting the saddle below Wasson Peak on the Sweetwater Trail. Cool but nothing real exciting, It's only 10 yards off the trail and a scoot under a barbed wire fence. The actual mine entrance is blocked off so you cant go in more than a couple yards. I really like the early morning views from on top the peak particularly Panther and Sombrero to the north.

Headed down the Hugh Norris Trail to the Sendero Esperanza Trail. Really nice trail, they put a lot of work on this trail, not rocky like the King Canyon and Sweetwater Trail. Sections of this trail are through decomposed granite that makes for fine trails. Lots of really fat saguaros along this trail, they must like the decomposed granite also. If you like dragging out the climb to Wasson Peak this is probably the way to go, I like to get it over with so King Canyon is for me and do the downhill on a more gradual trail. Once at the Sendero Esperanza Trail we headed south toward the Gould Mine and the Gould Mine Trail back to our start point.

Flowers on the ocotillo and hedgehog and a few poppies, not a great year for flowers. We finished the hike at about 1100 and headed across the street to the desert Museum for our 1130 scheduled visit time. Not the best time to visit with afternoon temps in the low 90's but Ginny has never been and we were in the area. Lots of flowers blooming in the Museum though. Congrats to Ginny on her first hike where the destination was a peak.

big loop from sweetwater taking in a bunch of the trails in saguaro west

up sweetwater, down kings canyon, then gould mine/esperanza to hugh norris. hit the peak from there and came back on sweetwater

perfect weather. saw a fair amount of people but not too crazy. parking is a bit limited at the TH. i was unaware they had built a big new parking lot at kings canyon. that was pretty nice.

felt pretty good and ran virtually all the ascent except for the steps. screw those

Denny and I decided to take advantage of the reasonable temps and get a hike in out of town. Only a 90 minute drive from the carpool lot to Kings Canyon trailhead. We headed up Kings Canyon, then up Hugh Norris. Quiet, and nice to see some desert vegetation that is actually green.

Breezy along the spur to the summit of Wasson. I was almost cold for a moment, then remembered that was just my personality. Quick stop at the summit, then west down Hugh Norris to Sendero Esperanza. South on that to Gould Mine, then took that back to the trailhead.

Perfect temps for early Sept, although the last half mile was starting to get warm without the breeze. I think we saw 9 other hikers on the loop. No wildlife besides a few birds and lizards. Got back to Phoenix by 11:30. My kids would like this loop, so I’ll have to keep it in mind when the weather cools a little more. As always, great to hike with Denny!

With the nice weather and a little extra time Linda suggested a couple different hikes. I picked the easier one. 😁 This is a nice loop. The up is gradual, the trail in great shape, nice views, great vegetation. Throw in a pleasant pace and some fun conversation and it makes for a great outing! Thanks for another great hike Linda. Like Haz, you rock. 😁
