Mosey-backpack down Grandview (many new rockfalls to navigate due to unrepaired 2021 slides) to Horseshoe Mesa - Cottonwood Creek (Flash last year has OBLITERATED most/all of the lower camps and parts of the trail below the spring) - (Grapevine and Miner's Route to the River from along the Tonto - dayhike) - Hance Creek - Horseshoe Mesa. Mostly a bit toastier than I had hoped but got my comeuppance as from the Mesa to the Rim I got rained on, then hailed on, then winds to beat the band.
An actual TORNADO on my way down to Williams in Junipine. Humphrey's got snow down about 1000-2000 feet.

Fun weekend in the canyon. The others started while I set up the shuttle. The snow on the top slowed us down a bit, but otherwise was a great trip down. I forgot how rough things were above the redwall.

Kyle did his best 9L and got to camp ahead of another group to assure the prime campsite. Sadly the mice did not come out and entertain us.

Sunday we had a big day over to Cottonwood. I had found a new route to the Tonto from the end of the beach. I think this is the official route and the higher routes have developed over time. Satellite shows a spider web of options. I liked this way, great views over the beach. Took an hourlong lunch at Hance Creek just as it was getting a little bit warm. High clouds filtered the sun for a very pleasant trip around the horseshoe.

We were alone at Cottonwood and enjoyed a great spot along the creek. Karl and I ventured downstream as far as we could. I knew there were bypasses necessary to get to the river, but was surprised how far we got before getting stopped. No time to do bypasses, so we headed back to camp.

Monday we hiked out, witnessing the damage from last fall's fire in the Cottonwood drainage. The upper campsites are charred. I'm not sure if the cottonwoods survived. We can hope.

The climb to the mesa was rough. I wasn't ready for that grade so early in the day! After that Grandview is awesome. I was surprised that we hit solid snow at 5,600ft and was happy to have decided to carry traction. There were stretches that I think might have been impossible without it.

Passed a LEO ranger who checked our permit! I love it when they're out on the trails!

Got to snooze on the way home because Karl drove! Woot! Thanks! :)

Another great weekend in the canyon! Initially the weather forecast was questionable but as the trip got closer it turned to near perfect conditions. We hiked in New Hance Trail around noon while Chumley setup the car shuttle for us and later caught up part way down the trail. New Hance is tough and reminded me a lot of Boucher's descent but still spectacular. The red wall break was awesome, with a nice ramp down to Red Canyon and last two miles hiking in the wash to the river. Arriving at the river Kyle was down first and snagged the primo camp spot for us to enjoy for the night.

Next day we had our longest day about 12 miles but it was mostly on the Tonto Trail so easy hiking compared to New Hance. First mile of trail was the most scenic as we hiked along the river and then above it with great views. Eventually the trail gets up on the Tonto layer and does what the Tonto does going in and out of each drainage. However, relatively easy miles over to Hance Creek where we took extended break. Good water in Hance Creek where we filtered a couple liters. After lunch it was 5 miles to Cottonwood Camp and last nights camp.

Kyle and Chumley arrived at Cottonwood and got a really nice spot again. After initial setup Chumley and I wend down Cottonwood Creek to explore. There are some good narrows downstream and we continued until hitting a pour off which we didn't want to hike around. So we headed back to camp and enjoyed another pleasant night around camp!

Next morning we only had 5 miles to hike out but of course it's all uphill. Still not that bad a hike with snow and microspikes needed for the top 1.5 miles of trail to Grandview. Very scenic with the snow and Grandview itself always has great views and cool switchbacks in the last 1/2 mile. Another great hike....thanks to Chumley for getting the permits!!

Back to the Grand Canyon to finish some more Tonto Trail and check out Old Grandview Trail. Took a taxi from GC Visitor Center to Grandview TH…$24 one way for anyone considering the option. First night the goal was camp at Cottonwood Creek from Grandview TH so we only had to hike about 6.8 miles. Starting about 130 we made it camp by 530. Being the drier part of the year there was no water at the crossing of Cottonwood so dropped the pack and ventured upstream and found some small pools about ¼ mile up as well as nice camp close by among some cottonwoods.

Day 2 we wanted to check out Old Grandview Trail down to the Colorado River which is about 2.5 miles from Cottonwood Creek. There is a large cairn marking the junction which drops abruptly from the rim towards the river. The first part is not too bad but the bottom half is very steep and loose scree and boulders abound. Once at the river we took a nice long break spending over an hour. Two boat crews passed by and one offered a beverage which is always welcome :) After the break we headed back up which was much easier going up the scree and took about 30 minutes less. Back at the junction it’s 3 miles over to Grapevine Canyon and camp for the second night. Again no water at the crossing but there were some clear pools downstream a few hundred yards.

Day 3 the camp was at Lonetree Canyon continuing west bound on Tonto Trail but our main concern was water. So we headed out early with the goal of spending the afternoon searching for water. Fortunately we found it about 3 or 4 tenths of mile downstream from the trail crossing. The source is a spring that’s probably reliable all year and is marked by a lone cottonwood tree. We rested in the shade and filtered water with the relief that the search was easier than expected. Then headed back to camp and relaxed rest of the afternoon.

Day 4 just needed to make it out of the canyon with little more 10 miles to South Kaibab TH. Of course there were very few people seeing only 3 in 23 miles from Horseshoe Mesa below Grandview to the Tip Off at South Kaibab. Once on the SK it was back to the crowds but nice to do this trip in 4 days with plenty of time to enjoy Old Grandview Trail and Tonto Trail.

Old Grandview is pretty steep. I did a good portion as a butt scoot. Hiking back up was much easier than going down. We did see a bighorn on the trail.

From Friday, October 21, to Sunday, October 23, my hiking friend Lova and I did the "Rim to Rim" at the Grand Canyon.

DAY ONE:
We started at South Kaibab Trail around 6:30am on Friday, hiking downhill to Bright Angel Campground. We stopped at each of the four designated rest areas to remove our packs, enjoy a snack, take some photos, and use the restrooms (if available). The stops were "Ooh Ahh Point," "Cedar Ridge," "Skeleton Point," and "Tip Off." Saw lots of other hikers up and down the trails, including "rim runners." The trail terrain varies; some areas are nice and smooth, others have some rock, and there are places with wooden logs placed across the trail that require a step down. Some neat areas with switchbacks too, especially after Skeleton Point. It's highly recommended that trekking poles be used on this hike. After we crossed the bridge over the Colorado River, we found a campsite at Bright Angel Campground around 1:30pm,set up our tents, hanged our packs, and checked out Phantom Ranch. Bright Angel Creek runs alongside the campground, but there are spigots with water in between the campsites. Bathroom facilities with flushing toilets are available. There is a phone to make calls, but I had difficulty making long distance calls, it only went to an operator who is able to process local calls.

NOTE - There are no water sources along this trail and very little shade, so prepare accordingly and hike smart. Composite bathrooms are available at Cedar Ridge and Tip Off.

DAY TWO:
We hit the trail at 8:00am, heading north through "The Box." The trail is spectacular, following alongside the Bright Angel Creek and being surrounded by the rocky areas of the Grand Canyon, featuring layers of rock in a wide variety of colors. We took our time, hiking along and taking lots of photos. We even took a detour to check out Ribbon Falls which featured an amazing waterfall. We took a nice break here, removing our socks and shoes and soaking our feet in the cold water. We made it to Cottonwood Camp around 3:00pm and found a nice campsite. Most of the campsites are not shaded, but on the plus side it allows you to see the night sky with the stars and Milky Way, which is crystal clear without any artificial light getting in the way.

DAY THREE:
We packed up our tents and most of our gear before breakfast so that we could hit the trail at sunrise. Our final destination was North Kaibab Trailhead at the North Rim and we had quite a climb ahead of us and knew it would take a good portion of the day. We hit the trail around 7:45am and made numerous short stops to rest our legs and catch our breath. Manzanita rest area has bathrooms, a Ranger Station, and still had the water turned on (which is scheduled to be shut off by mid-November for the winter season). The Creek still flows along this site as well, though once you hit the trail again and head north, it begins to climb back up the Canyon and veer away from the Creek. Signs at Manzanita advised that water at Supai Tunnel was turned off, which means no more sources for water until we reached the Trailhead. We did stop at Supai Tunnel to remove our packs, have a snack and use the restroom, and had a friendly squirrel hoping for some free food handouts. We finally climbed to the top of North Kaibab Trail and reached the Trailhead around 2:30pm...legs feeling like Jell-O, feet a tad sore, but super stoked that we successfully finished the hike and conquered the Canyon!

I am planning to do more "Rim to Rim" hikes in the future, including one with my boyfriend sometime in the Fall of next year. October is a GREAT month for these types of hikes. The daytime temps are in the 80s, night temps are in the 50s, so the weather is perfect. Clear skies at night. My next Rim to Rim adventure will be SOBO, so I can experience North Kaibab downhill, stay a night at Indian Garden Campground, and hike up Bright Angel Trail.

Nice jaunt across the Tonto - stops at the lower caves in Cottonwood (water flowing in the canyon), Grapevine; (extensively explored up and down-canyon from the crossing)(water flowing there as well - and the unnamed side canyon on the east side of Grapevine Canyon also had flowing water), Lonetree;(rained quite a bit, but visited (jealously) for quite a while with 2 'Haydukers' on the last leg of their trip, Cremation; again explored up and down canyon for a full day and had a layover day to hike down to Phantom for a beer (they have added Grand Canyon Amber to the standard Bud & Tecate offerings)and some cards and then back to Cremation. NOTE: the western boundary of the Cremation camping 'zone' has been moved eastward to the bottom of the western arm of Cremation - even had a BC L/E ranger pop in (where do they FIND these guys?) Why they moved the boundary is a mystery, but as there was no rain in the vicinity, camping in the drainage was pretty nice!
Rim-bound, used the cut-off route igallery/image_page.php?id=4590 to avoid the tip-off (much better going DOWN this shortcut) then up the SK to the Rim. SK is getting a lot of mule traffic as the NPS has moved trips from the BA and unfortunately the trail shows it.
Nice, somewhat blustery days were perfect for backpacking the Tonto. Prickley-Pears were blooming like crazy! Globemallows, etc. as well. REALLY pretty time to be in the Canyon!

Still a usable trickle at the Tonto crossing, probably won't last long. Not much water in the canyon below the Tonto, although earlier in the season and/or after a wetter winter it would likely be flowing more.

The second bypass in particular is long and gnarly, climbing way up above the canyon floor while crossing multiple ridges and loose slopes. The third bypass down to the river is also steep and loose. Fortunately I brought my packraft along and floated down about a half mile to exit on the Old Grandview trail instead of having to return up Cottonwood and reverse the bypasses.

Overall a similar canyon to nearby Hance and Grapevine, but a bit harder to negotiate and somewhat less scenic.
