Joined the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Danny, Jane, Joseph, Ken, Venjo) for a ride on Estrella Mountain Regional Park trails this morning. Crazy hazy, hot, and humid, and sunny! Started on Rainbow Valley and did a clockwise loop using Dysart, Butterfield, Gadsden, and Coldwater back to Dysart and Rainbow Valley. No drama on this week's ride. Saw 1 trail runner.

Been a while since I got to ride with the Bagel Bunch. Today 8 of us set off from Estrella Foothills Community Park on Pirate trails Park Ave over to the EMRP Iron Ranger, into the park on Crossover, Pedersen to Toothaker, briefly on Gadsden, north on Coldwater, west on Dysart, a bit on Rainbow Valley, back over to the Pirate trails, Pirate's Cove, Black Jack, Jumpline, and Sunrise back to the Community Park. We had a tire that refused to hold air until we put a tube in it, a broken off pedal, and a big crash on the Jumpline trail. 100% of the starting riders finished today :) Wow, it was humid and hot in the sun. Saw a couple of hikers in EMRP.

Took the fat bike over to EMRP for a ride this morning. Parked at Navy and crossed the street to Horseshoe trail over to the Rodeo Grounds and picked up Butterfield, then clockwise on Gadsden, Desert Rose to the service road to catch the end of the Competitive Track Long Loop, took the road from the Comp Track to the Desert Rose trailhead, up the hill and back to Gadsden, southwest to Coldwater to the Rodeo Grounds and Horseshoe back to the parking area. Sun was hot on my back this morning. Saw a pair of bike riders on Gadsden, 3 hikers on Toothaker at the Rodeo Grounds, and 4 trail runners on Desert Rose. Trails were all in good shape. Super tired when I got back to the van. Entrance station was unmanned again today. MCSO was on patrol when I was pulling in at 7am.

Took the fat bike over to EMRP this morning to go deep into the park and hit some of that sweet Pedersen sand. Started from the Navy south parking area under a nice canopy of clouds and hit Horseshoe, Toothaker, Butterfield, Gadsden, Pedersen (clockwise), Toothaker (south), Gadsden (east), Coldwater, Toothaker, and back on Horseshoe. First time going all the way down the Pedersen sand shoot. I was able to keep up great speed, but the washboard nearly ripped my arms off on the full rigid fat bike. Stopped to chat a bit with two pairs of mountain bikers. Had to get around 2 hikers who couldn't hear me calling to them over their ear buds, gosh.

Another brunch ride. Got to the Estrella Mountain Regional Park entrance a little after 10am and found it closed. A road paint striping crew was laying down some new lines on the park roads and caused a major traffic jam (me and one other vehicle). Go to the rodeo grounds and was surprised to see a whole bunch of cars. Good for them! Worked my way to Butterfield via the short connector. Love the hard climbs on Butterfield! Then Gadsden to Pedersen. The cholla cactus fields along the trail are in a sorry state :( Took the Homestead shortcut back to west Pedersen. Homestead wasn't a sandy as I was expecting, that was nice. Tore a knob off my rear tire which promptly went flat. Thought I might be able to nurse it back to the trailhead by wrapping it with a cable tie. That solution lasted all of a half mile before I was pulling the wheel and installing a tube. Uneventful 5 miles back to the Rodeo grounds. Saw one couple hiking, twice, at the beginning and end of my loop. Went to West Phoenix Trek store and picked up a new tire. Got home and fully serviced the bike. All ready for the next ride. Oh yeah, the wife made shoofly pie today, so I got that going for me :)

Got a late start, 6:45. Nice cloud cover felt cool, but not for long! Parked at the Rodeo Grounds and did a clockwise loop, tiny bit on Toothaker to Butterfield, Gadsden, out and back on Desert Rose (cactus down across trail at the top), Gadsden, Coldwater back to Rodeo Grounds. I was thinking of taking Toothaker back, but I was tired and it was getting hot. Saw 3 bikers, including my Bagel buddy Ken G on Desert Rose.

Picked up my neighbor Craig this morning for a ride in Estrella Mountain Regional Park. We got delayed by a car fire on 143rd Ave and Indian Springs, just on the other side of the barbed wire fence from the interior park road. Called 911 and waited for emergency crews to arrive. Continued to the Rodeo grounds to start our ride on Rainbow Valley, to Toothaker south to Gadsden, east to Coldwater, and then north back to the Rodeo grounds. Lots of climbing this morning. Saw a decent sized group of hikers on Rainbow Valley and then a pair on Coldwater. Stopped in the Nature Center on the way out and saw that their tarantula recently moulted, pretty cool.

I was moving pretty slow this morning, but once I munched down on some tasty Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, I felt a strong urge to do some climbing. Drove over to Estrella Mountain Regional Park Rodeo Grounds and jumped on Rainbow Valley trail. Took that all the way to Toothaker, then south to Gadsden for just a bit, north on the freshly graded Coldwater trail, east on Dysart, south on Butterfield back to Gadsden, east to Flycatcher, back on Gadsden to Butterfield back to the Rodeo Grounds. Saw bunches of hikers, and the cutest father/young son out on bikes cheering me on :)

Lunch ride at EMRP today. Rainbow Valley hills have been cleaned up a bit with a bunch of new water bars. First time riding southbound on Coldwater, the rocks weren't as bad as I was expecting. Saw loads of hikers, 6 bikers, and a pair of horseback riders.

Early morning hike in the Estrellas. Got to the TH a little after 6am. I went in in the Coldwater and the a brief stint on the Gadsden before taking the Butterfield back. I started off in the dark. The Coldwater starts off as a road, so I was able to enjoy the predawn skies without a light. Lucky enough to catch a falling star. Used a light to make the passage between the hills. It’s a little rockier in that section so the light came in handy. Got passed by a quad. It looked like the park service was heading in to do some work on the Pedersen trail. The trails were in good shape after last nights rain. Signs of dampness, but no mud. The weather was a little chilly, but luckily it wasn’t too windy. Encountered 3 hikers on the way out.

Decided to beat myself up a bit today and went over Estrella Mountain Regional Park and do some of the hard trails the hard way. Parked at the rodeo grounds and started southbound on Rainbow Valley. Climbed the rocky never ending hill after the Dysart turnoff and did better than I expected :) Then down the other side to Toothaker and started the grind up the steep rocky gravely trail. Never thought I'd make that saddle to the every pleasing descent past Pedersen to Gadsden. Except for a couple of deep sandy wash crossings on Gadsden, the rest of the loop is pleasant enough. Saw one jogger on Rainbow Valley and a mountain biker coming down Flycatcher who I followed a bit until he turned off on Desert Rose.

Wasn't too excited to go out for a ride this morning, but I don't want to waste retirement sitting in my Lay-Z-Boy wishing I had gone out for an activity. Decided on an easy loop through Estrella Mountain Regional Park as I continue to get used to being locked into the bike with the new clipless pedals. There's a couple of really sandy sections on Gadsden I had concerns with crossing, but it least I'd fall over in the nice soft sand. Going clockwise from the rodeo grounds, I hit Coldwater for a minute, Butterfield, Gadsden, Coldwater, Dysart, and back on Rainbow Valley. Saw one hiker on Rainbow Valley during the entire ride.

I saw that an official route was posted for the Flycatcher Trail by Nightstalker and that this was a new trail that's not on any of the most recent maps posted on the Maricopa.gov website. This area has mostly level trails and doesn't take too long to drive to thanks to the freeways, so with the heat this seemed like the natural choice for the day.

Started from the rodeo area and did a Figure8 starting on the Coldwater to Butterfield, then Gadsden, Flycatcher, Gadsden, Butterfield and Coldwater back to the lot. Saw 3 hikers and one trail runner. 2 hikers and the trail runner were within the first 20 minutes, the last hiker I saw during my last 20 minutes. Weather wasn't too hot thanks to my early start, but it was a bit toasty by the end. Grasses look brown and torched from the heat and lack of rain for the typical toasted desert July scenery.

Joined the Estrella Bagel Bunch on a mountain bike ride in Estrella Mountain Regional Park this morning. Pleasantly surprised by the 62 degree starting temp. Rode a great combination of climbs and fast flowy trails. Took the long way up the park's newest trail, Fly Catcher.
