A lasso of Apache Wash, Badger Brawl, Cliff Walk and esplanade.

I knew there would be no flowers, so I was "hunting" for saguaro. There's some nice ones, but not as many as I expected. Not many barrel cactus, hedgehog or silver cholla. Buckhorn cholla was common though. Lots of shrubbery. Some palo verde, though the only decent sitting shade was on the west side of Cave Creek. Finally saw my only flower right next to my SUV as I finished.

Other than wash crossings, this loop was basically flat. (The 304 ft. of gain is mostly the 150 ft. difference between Dove Valley Rd. and Carefree Hwy. Although there is no prominence, you can easily see all the major terrain features to the north and south.

You can chop two miles off the loop by taking the official shortcut along the powerline. Not a thrilling hike, so unless you arre a completist, take the shortcut.

57 when I started; a toasty 83 when I finished.

Met up with my buddy Dan this morning for some riding out of Apache Wash trailhead. We made a counter clockwise loop starting on Badger Brawl to Cliff Walk, Esplanade, Apache Wash Loop (counter clockwise), and a bit of Ocotillo at the end. Saw some hikers and bikers and one woman on a horse (twice). First time for me on these trail and they were super fun. Would be great for newbie riders.

Saturday trail run at Apache Wash. Nice day before the big storm on Sunday. The snakes were out enjoying as well. I've always seen at least two rattlesnakes every time trail running in the past month or so. Temps are pretty much perfect for them and what better place to get sun then in the middle of the trail 8-[

Mission accomplished. Sad to say, the north owl hasn't seem to come back for the second year in a row. The south owl was in residence but I didn't see any young 'uns yet.

It was a nice day for the checkup. The temp was a little warm to start but when the sun went behind the clouds, it was just right. I thot I had walked by the intersection from Apache Wash so backtracked only to realize I hadn't walked by it. Part of the reason is I couldn't see my normal landmark, the tuner fork saguaruo which has passed away :lone: . On the Esplanade Trail, before arriving to where that saguaro normally stood I took a closer picture of the ground cover I couldn't ID last Sunday that I think is Woolly Plantain. I also grabbed some photos of some other flora including Owl Clover, Desert Hyacinth, Christmas Cholla and a few other different kinds of Cholla.

I did get buzzed as I headed northbound. Thankfully I didn't over react like I have a tendency to do. It was in the grass and I couldn't really see it. I passed by additional flora including Owl Clover which was the star of the day. The condo saguaro looks good and once again I missed the first owl (south) and realized it when I saw this one saguaro that is my landmark for the north owl. I had seen a few bike riders up to this point. I walked over to where her nest was and circled the saguaro. I saw no evidence of her. I noticed one of the saguaro arms had broken off so perhaps that nest is not usable anymore.

I headed back about 1/2 mile where the south owl was and I could first see her ears. I circled around and took her photo :) . The breeze had picked up when I hiked southbound so I truly enjoyed that. I tried to stay clear of the taller grass alongside the trail so I wouldn't get buzzed again. I didn't see any hikers on the Esplanade Trail. And now it was just a matter of getting back to the Trailhead and finishing off with a trip up Apache Vista. My legs were a little sore but that was mainly from my two workouts this week after being off ten days from being sick.

I made my way up the normally easy Sidewinder Trail which has Lupine and Scorpionweed on both sides. I remembered that Ambika said in order to get a decent picture of meadow-like flowers you need to zoom a little so I tried that. Sometimes successful, other times, not so much. The lighting needed to be filtered to get the ideal shot. As I topped out on Sidewinder on the east side I was serenaded by the coytoes again, just like last Sunday, so I stopped to listen and record.

At the intersection of Apache Vista Trail I sat on a rock for a few minutes before heading up. Not much in the way of flora on the way up other than miniature poppies and some lupine, but quite a few blooming Brittlebush.

The temperature continued to be lovely as I made my way back and along the Sidewinder Trail. Very little flora where last year there was so much. Glad I did all that filming last year and it's nice just to be able to hike this year. This time I felt my watch stop so I fired up my phone to continue tracking my hike. There was some photography going on as I got nearer the TH, including with horses. I noticed the stormy weather I had seen to the north was now getting closer and I'll be darned if it didn't start to sprinkle. In fact, it would rain on my way home.

I enjoyed my Huck It which I was really looking forward to for about two miles. I watched the weather and photographed some of it as I was leaving the TH lot.

WATCH 2:39PM start (watch died, phone said 5:27PM done) burned about 1200 calories. 1746-2094 elevation. 141bpm/176 max. Temp was 75.1 and 25% humidity with partly cloudy skies.

Mission aborted. Will return on Wednesday. As I drove north on Cave Creek Road I noticed heavy weather to the north including white clouds raining or snowing or whatever they were doing in the northeast corner of the valley. It was quite the storm front; a treat to see actually.

I geared up, anxious to get on the trail so I could take a photo of some of the weather action. I grabbed a shirt just in case it got nippy out there, which turned out to be such a wise decision. I got caught last spring in some cold spells so I'm trying to get in the habit of bringing it. I headed out briskly on my owl hunt. The trail had been used during the rain and sadly you could tell with the footprints and bike treads.

Once I got to the Esplanade Trail I could really see the weather systems in the north and east so I tried to photograph it with desert floor. I heard some coyotes howling. There was even some wildflowers blooming including a nice patch of Owl Clover. But alas, the weather I thought that was just over there, was moving my way so I put on my shirt and decided to head back. The wind was bitingly brisk so I'm sure glad I had my shirt.

My pace was quicker as the wind picked up. Another hiker was making a beeline for the trailhead as well. It was now starting to sprinkle. I was glad to be back to Tonto 3. The temp had dipped to 53. I gave thought to hanging around until the storm passed but it was already late in the afternoon and I wanted to be able to take my time.

Sunday trail run at Apache Wash trailhead. Lots of people out as usual on Apache Wash part but once on the Esplanade and Cliff Walk trail only mountain bikers...and snakes. Ran into two rattle snakes in the last two miles of the run.

These are great trails for trail running so they are perfect for getting back into trail running shape. They are also really good for mountain biking so ran into quite few along the way. Perfect temps for the run around 68 while I was out there. Have a ways to go to get the speed back but nice to be trail running again!

SATURDAY: I wanted to give my toe edges a little longer recovery time so I picked this hike; altho I planned on throwing Apache Vista on it but I got too late of a start :( . The parking lot was jam full except for one spot where I normally park for me and Tonto 3. I put on my heavier shoes and headed on out. There was a slight breeze but it was warmer than I had hoped.

The Apache Wash Loop Trail is where I would see the most people action but once I turned on the Esplanade, there wouldn't be any more hikers until I returned. However, there were quite a few bike riders but they all seemed to be going east and north bound. I was surprised to see some Owl Clover sticking up above the grass but there were only a couple patches. I only saw a few blooming Hedgehogs and I continue to be disappointed in the lack of blooming Buckhorns.

When I finally got to the South owl nest, there were a couple bikers there, one trying to get pictures. For some reason my Pany was in overexposure mode when I tried to zoom in. When I got back to the TH I saw that I had accidentally hit the EV button to push it to +2.50. Well I shot the photos anyway thinking I could adjust in post. We could only see mama and one little one but I thot I saw another. I took a few more pictures and continued north to check out the other nest, just in case she showed back up.

Once I got there I carefully walked off the trail being snake aware, just to get close enough to shoot some photos to verify the empty nest. I headed back and once at the south nest; I finally spotted the second little one. I shot in overexposed mode just to get the zoomed shots. I did use my phone's zoom as well just in case the Pany shots were not fixable. I was barely able to get a shot of the family and I tried to get a few photos of the two little ones together. They seem at quite different age levels to me but I'm not an owl baby expert.

On the way back to the TH I heard that singular sound of a male quail (thx Greg for letting me know what that was) and I actually spotted it but without my Pany, I coudn't get a decent shot with the phone camera. Back at the Apache Wash Loop the people traffic picked up. Not too far from the TH I saw a biker paused on the trail. I thot maybe he was waiting for me to pass so that he could proceed but he was waiting to tell me about the snake which only buzzed once as I got close. I never could quite see it. Anyway, he said we got to look out for each other out here :) . Later while I was drinking my Huckleberry beer, I heard a few girls talking about the snake.

Gotta start hiking earlier.

WATCH 8:35-10:30AM, 5.06 miles, 1728-1833 elevation. 125 avg bpm/146 max (shameful). 4.5% (shameful again) Zone 5 max, 59% Zone 4 anaaerobic, 32% Zone 3 aerobic burning 712 calories. Starting temp 73.3 (finishing 84) sunny and 22% humidity with slight breeze from time to time.

Had intended on getting out a couple days earlier but the wind was blowing too much for my hiking enjoyment. As I drove in, the hills were alive with glowing Brittlebush enmasse; such a pretty site I started taking pictures before I even parked.

I headed out on the Esplanade Trail. No movies today since I took so much on March 7th (my first owl check up), a report I still haven't posted as I'm quite far behind. I headed east over to the Apache Wash Trail. This is where I encountered several hikers. I also noted some Owl Clover which I was surprised to see. I had vowed not to take pictures of the evil Stinknet but I had to give in as it did create for some bright color throughout the hike. It apparently is replacing all the Combseed and Smallflower Stock.

On the Esplanade Trail now, the fabulous Christmas Cholla from early March doesn't have the bright red bulbs anymore, but I wasn't going to walk over there anyway as it's snake season. I was on the lookout for rattlesnakes and did see a cute little fella (Patch-Nosed? snake) half on the trail that I got some pictures of. I tried to keep a good pace but the Owl Clover was putting on such a show along with some other co-stars, I found myself stopping much more than I intended.

I finally got to the two mile mark where the South Owl was. She only has one baby though. I did get some decent photos of baby and momma :) being careful going off trail which I would do again checking for the North Owl. However, I ended up walking past her area and had to backtrack once I saw the power poles. Here I had to walk over much more ground to only find she wasn't there and it doesn't look like she hasn't been in residence as there are no markings on the nest. I still took some more photos of the Owl Clover, even with one less owl.

I also noticed on my way back that they had replaced the signs on the posts from the phone friendly to just Esplanade Trail with an arrow??? And the posts are every 1/4 mile; guess I never realized that before. It was a nice hike back to Apache Wash Trail and I was curious to see what it looked like from last month. Well there is a ton of Cheat/Foxtail Grass and a substantial amount of Stinknet. But thankfully, there was some more Owl Clover in patches and scattered as has been the case off and on through this whole hike.

This time I took the Apache Wash South Connector and kept my eye out for the little dam I had seen the last time from above. I did see it and still would like to take a closer look but not during rattlesnake season. I headed up the Sidewinder Trail which I actually enjoyed the slight incline as I had been on flat trail for the previous five miles. Here again I would see lots of Owl Clover but this time big smatterings but littler patches. My views to the north over the valley was pretty impressive because of the yellow color. It's an impressive show.

I headed up Apache Vista Trail where a lot of Lupine and brightly blooming Brittlebush greeted me along the sides of the trail and above/below. It's just hard to photograph. I also notice some poppies still blooming here and there. I always like this little peak. The views all around are covered in yellow, this time including hillsides full of Brittlebush. Once I got down and back to the Sidewinder I had hoped just to get back to the Trailhead but noooooooo, there were still more flowers and scenes to photograph. But I just decided that this is an abnormal season so taking more pictures is par for the course at this point :stop: and thus, why so many pictures... again. I would also see a lot more people.

It was a great hike with a very nice temperature for me. Hiking on the east side of the Preserve there almost no hiker traffic but there are a few bike riders. I was a little sore as I was from my Monday workout from an almost 5 day break. They say muscles remember but for decades I think that is a farce. All mine remember is how sore or tired they are after short layoffs  :( .

WATCH 1:42-4:53PM, 8.21 miles, 1737-2123 elevation. 128 avg bpm/164 max. 12% Zone 5 max, 61% Zone 4 anaerobic, 27% Zone 3 aerobic burning 1225 calories. Temp was a lovely 62.5, sunny and 10% humidity.

Joined 9:30 am Meetup. Woah, lots of vehicles in this large parking area. Fortunately, not one of the trails I was on had many peeps.

Mini Apache Wash Loop with group. Then several of us broke off onto Espalande Trail. At the 3 mile point they turned back. I continued on as I always do.

Crossed a flooded spot to reach Cliff Walk Trail. Then jumped onto a connector to Badger Brawl Trail. Next, added a couple short trails to reach distance goal.

Plz note, Paseo and it's connectors are sidewalks + Sonoran Foothills is all thru a neighborhood.

I wrote this several weeks ago but am just now getting around to posting a few of my wildflower hikes: I thought it was time to do an Owl Check-Up so I put together a route where I could also do my usual hike out there.  I was hoping there was a way to cross over from Esplanade to Apache Wash on the northside but I couldn't see anything. So I would have to do an out and back to the Apache Loop and then crossover to Sidewinder.  It was the perfect day for my Samsung as it likes that filtered sun.  It was very crowded around the trailhead and on the way to the Esplanade.  There were several bike riders including some newbies.  I was having trouble seeing my screen and I fiddled with it for a while but gave up and continued, hoping that the filming would turn out okay.

The Esplanade Trail was so incredibly green, and with the light and the cactus jetting out it made for the usual fabulous scenery but amped up.  I almost felt like I was on a golf course in some areas.  The trail was in decent enough shape except for the dry mud tracks caused by the bike riders.  I did try to turn my camera off more than on, but you all know how that goes for me.  I had good distant views including toward the snowed Mazzies and Four Peaks, so my Pany got a little workout too.  I did come across some large brightly bulbed Christmas Cholla :) that run along the drainage that disects this area.  There were bits of poppies off and on at the beginning and as I neared the south Owl area.  And even a few miniature Owl Clover were raising their blooms to say hello.  I sure hope they are going to get bigger and multiply.

I spotted the owl nest fairly quickly.  This is the one I usually miss on the first pass.  She was up and laying in her nest. Based on the pictures I thought she looked a little miserable. She did keep her eyes on me as I circled to get a better angle.  I continued the next half-mile to check on the north owl.  The birds seemed pretty vocal today as well.  No one was home at the north nest so I retraced my steps.

My hope was not to film on the way back to the Apache Wash Trail.  I did succeed in no filming but I did end up taking several shots from the desert floor up.  Those turned out pretty cool.  I encountered three hikers at the junction of the Apache Wash Loop and wouldn't see anyone again until I got to the Sidewinder.    It's always interesting hiking near the wash as it's quite lush; especially now.  I took the first crossover to the other side of the Apache Wash Loop and headed north for a bit to hook up with the connector to the Sidewinder.

The sun was now mostly gone and the wind had picked up so I started to get really cold.  I wish I had brot my extra shirt that I could easily tie around my waist; I just didn't expect it to get cold (I was wearing a sleeveless top).  I continued to film a little but tried to avoid the housing area that seems to be creeping closer on this side.  I started up the Sidewinder Trail but was hiking to the wind. I was just getting chilled so I knew I had to turn back and head for the Trailhead.  I was so mad at myself for not having that shirt as I was having such a good hike and feeling so strong.  With the wind at my back I headed east and then south on the Apache Connector Trail.  Soon I would be seeing lots of poppies, mostly cold like me.  However, it was still a nice display of fluted poppy heads and then a very nice mix of Lupine and some Bladderpod.  I took some more photos and movies until the wildflowers stopped.

On the Ocotillo Trail were the usual nice views with the green desert floor accentuating the cactus.  And per usual, I started running into more hikers but they had jackets or long sleeve shirts on.  I took the trail to the TH and all of a sudden my phone screen went completely dark. I couldn't even turn off my phone.  I was able to somehow get to the brightness screen and slid right so that I could see it again. There must be some button I push to cause that as it's happened before.  This is the second hike I've been too chilled to drink my beer.  Oh well, it was an awesome hike, nonetheless.  Lesson learned.

I think you will enjoy these videos, mostly because seeing how green our desert floor was a real treat :D ! I did narrate a lot; I never know if that's good or bad :-k .

I wanted to do this hike on Friday after I got back from the Islands but I couldn't drag myself out of bed. This time adjustment seems harder than the one from the east. And, now, I want to get in the rhythm of earlier to bed, earlier to rise so I can do the AM hikes but it will take a bit.

I knew the parking would be busy and it was, the most full I've seen it for quite awhile. I was surprised at the slight chill in the air as I started my hike. Near the start I saw an Easter bunny but it was too quick for a picture. I would be dodging mostly bike riders today and also some runners. The Buckhorn Cholla is really budding and blooming; wish the blooms were bigger. I also spotted the a couple hot air balloons landing on the other side of the Sonoran Parkway to my south. I saw a lot of balloons as I drove to the TH from my house today.

I got to the first nest and the only resident was Junior who we barely saw the top of a couple weeks ago. Junior is pretty large. I was able to snap a few photos before heading on to the northern nest. When I got there all I saw was mom. I did my usual circle and asked her about babies. She, per normal, could hardly hold her eyes open. (When I got home and saw my first photo, I spotted her young 'un, just barely.)

I headed back and took another picture of Junior. As I hiked on I enjoyed the bright yellow color of the Palo Verde trees blooms and the Honey Mesquite too. There were a few Wolfberry bushes but the berries are pretty small. I contemplated Apache Vista but decided I didn't have it in me plus I was a little sore from yesterday's Barbell class since it had been a couple weeks that I had last worked out.

WATCH: 5.07 miles in 1:46. Avg bpm 118, max 156 (seems high) most all in Zone 2 (80%), Zone 1 (16%) and 4% in Zone 3 burning 596 calories. Starting temp 62.5 and 24% humidity finishing at 9:16AM.

Before I left for my trip to islands far, far away; I wanted to do one last check on the Esplanade owls since I didn't see any little ones last Sunday. It so happened I have a brush I bot for Cathy's new curly hair that actually works on cutting down the frizz that needed to be delivered so Greg and I found a means to an end.

We met at the TH at 8AM and headed on down the trail. The trail would be much more crowded than it was last Sunday when I was here. We stepped aside many times coming and going. The clouds were dancing in the sky today. I knew it was supposed to be partly cloudy today but this isn't what I had in mind so I'm glad for that as it was much prettier. The wolfberries were plentiful as well; much more than only a week ago.

As we got onto the Esplanade Trail and were hiking for a short bit, we both stopped at the sounds of so many birds. It was quite something and we would hear it on the way back too. The sound was coming from the chattering of many small birds. I couldn't get a picture as they were pretty flighty.

Today I wanted to find the first nest that I seem to miss and when I saw it, I wonder how I miss it so much on the way. Momma stayed for a moment but decided she'd fly the coop; maybe it was breakfast time. We couldn't see any little ones. Coming and going there was a bike rider who both commented about seeing a little one. On the way back, a bike rider showed us a picture she had taken of the little one a few days ago. It was a good picture. Greg and I were only able to get the top of its head.

We continued on our way and stopped at Tecolote Clover Pond but it wasn't nearly as full. We eventually made it to Owl #2 (the one that I caught with a bloody face last week). She was there but once again, no signs of little one(s) plus she could hardly open her eyes long enough to even care that we were there. I did my usual circle to verify residents but nothing.

So we headed back the way we came while continuing to dodge bike riders. Along the way I noticed a most unusual nest in a cholla cactus. In fact, there were two nests, top entry and the other was front entry.
We stopped at the other end of Clover Pond and shot a couple photos before arriving back at the first nest. Mom was still gone and I circled to see if I could catch any sign of Junior and snapped a picture of the top of Junior's head.

And then it was back to the TH enjoying the breeze and slight cloud cover while nibbling on some wolfberries. It was a great morning for a hike, that's for sure. Greg helped me finish my last can of Huckleberry Wheat Lager from Gt Northern Brewing of Whitefish, MT. They have gone back in business via another outlet so I'm hoping to replenish my stock this summer.

WATCH: 5.15 miles (high point 1771, low 1664) avg bpm 110, max 140 with 32% at Zone 2 and 62% at Zone 1 burning 677 calories. Starting temp 60.9 at 40% humidity which we felt at the beginning but it lightened up quite a bit on our way back. We finished at 10:11AM.

I messaged Angela because I needed to pick up a gift from her that she had purchased for Cathy. She suggested we meet half way and get in a short hike together. Looking for baby owlettes in the Sonoran Preserve North was the obvious choice. We had both visited these nests together and seperately on many occasions.

The first nest we located had Momma home, but she was keeping her babies on the down low and out of sight. We finally did see the top of one of the owlettes heads as we were leaving. Nest #2 had the mother still incubating her clutch of eggs. Both nests seem to be running a couple of weeks behind compared to previous years.

The Esplanade Trail was loaded with Wolfberry bushes and we sampled their fares throughout the hike. Some were sweet, others not so much. We washed them down with some of Angela's coveted Huckleberry Lager...good stuff! Thanks for the hike Angela, (Cathy says thanks for the brush!), and have a safe trip and a great time over in our 50th state.

I realized it was time for me to do an owl checkup so I planned to actually get up early and go hiking before it got warm.

Anyway, it was slightly breezy with some very slight clouds to match. Hiking on the Esplanade Trail, the views were clear and the creosote was bright. It's easy hiking. There were some runners that passed me by and some bike riders as well. It was Sunday morning, so I expected to see more traffic.

As usual, it seems, I blew by the saguaro that has the first owl. It is off to the right and from this angle is easy to miss. I thot maybe I had and then I saw this giant pool of pink. Yep, I may have missed the Owl but not the Owl Clover :y: . And it wasn't that scrawny, miniature stuff but full blown. Being mindful of snakes, I circled the pink pond, getting every possible picture I could.

I continued on the trail and saw the bent arms of the saguaros to my left so I knew I was near the saguaro that held our second owl mother. There were no babies and her face was all bloody (which I didn't notice until I got home to see the photos). I circled the saguaro to verify if there were any babies. I asked her if she had any babies but I got nothing but a blank stare🦉.

So back I went to see Owl Mother 2. I don't know how I walked by her coming out but it obviously is the angle. I finally saw her and approached to get some photos and see if there was anyone else lingering. Alas, her nest seems empty of little ones unless I just couldn't see them. It seems late for no little ones.

With my initial mission complete I hiked back encountering more hikers and bike riders which would increase in volume as I made my way toward Apache Vista via the Sidewinder Trail. For some reason, I tripped four times on the rest of the hike. The Brittlebush and Creosote were blooming brightly. I was a little tired as I made the peak on the Apache Vista Trail. I hiked back down and to Tonto3 looking forward to my Frozen Cappuccino from Q-Trip.

(I was also trying some new Altra Lone Peak 5 Trail-Running Shoes. My toes didn't like the toe box but it was plenty roomy so I found that odd. As I started hiking, the shoes seem to fit too tight on the top of my foot so I loosened the lacings. The left shoe felt great after that but the right did not so I loosened some more along the whole shoe. That helped a little but I'm still not convinced it's a good fit.)

Trail run around Sonoran Preserve North. It's pretty much pan flat aside from crossing Apache Wash a few times. Great for trail running or mountain biking which there were several.

Working on finishing up more areas on the HAZ list, in this case the Sonoran Preserve N. Believe it or not, I actually only have the flat stuff left except for the Tramonto Trail and Peak. I have four more trails to finish off this area. I was going to do this hike on Friday but it was a tad too windy for me to do that many miles, I know, pathetic. But now that I'm retired, I can be choosy :D .

I created a route so that I could get 3 of the missing trails. As I started walking on the sidewalk Skip Rimsza Connector, I guess I didn't realize the first few miles would all be on sidewalk as I thot there might have been a trail next to the sidewalk. Continuing on the East Skip Rimsza Paseo I was wondering who thot we needed an ultra wide sidewalk to stretch for a couple miles alongside a road that had bike shoulders. I'm not sure of the history of this somewhat extravagant walkway. The traffic noise is awful but I enjoyed the scenery.
2-5-2022 I finally found a link about the Sonoran Boulevard https://www.phoenix.gov/streets/project ... -boulevard

I guess I never noticed the decorated cement siding either as it's really quite nicely done; you'll have to see the pictures. There was one section where the sidewalk had a spur that went down next to a bridge over the wash that I thot would have a sidewalk on the other side, but it didn't. No big deal as I just walked over the rocks and back up to the main sidewalk.

I came across the first junction to connect with Badger Brawl Trail but had mapped out to hook up with the next junction that also connects up with the Badger Brawl. I didn't see any other hikers on this section but did see a few bike riders. Finally I got to go over an opening in the fenceline to join up on the connector to Badger Brawl. Neither of these particular trails are mapped out on HAZ but they are marked with signs.

I was glad to get away from the traffic noise and have my feet on dirt as I veered north to hook up with Badger Brawl Trail. The desert really is pretty in the Preserve and I always enjoy it. The trail tread is mostly nice throughout so you can walk and gawk fairly safely.

As I got nearer the Dove Valley area I saw a tall structure that I could hear and see a long hose going up and down. I have no idea what it is; maybe a well of some sort? The trail actually continues to the east at the intersection but I went west on the North Cliff Walk Badger Brawl Connector as it skirts the south side of the tall dirt wall encasement of the Cave Creek Landfill. You can see this Landfill from quite a distance as I saw it from the Paseo North. Just past here is a fabulous stance of cholla on both sides of the trail. And then there is this one area you pass through where the grass is long and very green as are the trees and bushes on each side.

Now it was down into Cave Creek along side this incredible dirt conglomerate of the high side of the Cave Creek wall on the Esplanade Cliff Walk Connector. There were also a bunch of green ribbons tied here and on the other side. Being back on the west side of Cave Creek on the Esplanade Trail and heading south in more familiar territory was nice. It was also very green over here too. I did encounter a runner, the first person I'd seen since I left the south side of my hike.

I checked out both the owl nests but it's too early for anyone to be home. The light was shining nicely on some of the cactus so I tried to capture it a couple times with moderate success. The trail has remnants of being muddy in a couple places. Next was the turn south on the Apache Wash Trail for that last leg back to the TH. Nearer the area where you cross over Apache Wash I encountered two people. I did the wide swing back to Tonto 3 to finish off my 8 1/2 mile day.

Doing some Rx on the Preserve I did find this; I didn't realize how many acres it was: 2016 City land acquisitions reach 9,671 acres for Sonoran Preserve at a cost of $325 million. Still couldn't fin anything on what it cost for the Paseo infrastructure; it had to cost a lot!

WATCH: 8.57 miles (high point 1904, low point 1741) avg bpm 125, max 144 (16% Zone 3 Aerobic, 80% Zone 2 Weight Control) burning 1017 calories. Starting temp 69.8 degrees, 19% humidity finishing at 4:30PM

I did this hike last November, but my GPS track was corrupted so I decided to do it again today. Basically, I took the Apache Wash trail out to close to Cave Creek Rd, where a social trail veered east and followed the power lines to the Esplanade Trail, which I took north, crossed Cave Creek and got on the Cliff Walk trail to Badger Brawl and back to Apache Wash and the trailhead.

The trail is wide and fast, easy to walk. There are a fair number of mountain bikers out, the riding is good, and most every rider I've encountered is cordial and considerate. The dust wasn't bad today after the recent rains, though I'm sure it won't take long for the dust to return to its normal thick state.

While heading south along the Cliff Walk, nearing the power lines, a rider stopped and asked if I lived in Stetson Hills as he recognized my gate and said it's rather distinct (I pretty much walk daily during the week). I probably should have asked what is distinct about it; I'm sure I'll get the chance sometime.
