Went to Apache Wash this morning. Plan was to ride some of the easy trails. They turned out to be a little too rough for the gravel bike and with the heat, I wanted to keep the speeds up. Time for Plan B. Rode the Paseo Pathway, Dove Valley Road, and Sonoran Desert Drive. There was a fair number of other trail users out an about.

Joined 9:30 am Meetup. Woah, lots of vehicles in this large parking area. Fortunately, not one of the trails I was on had many peeps.

Mini Apache Wash Loop with group. Then several of us broke off onto Espalande Trail. At the 3 mile point they turned back. I continued on as I always do.

Crossed a flooded spot to reach Cliff Walk Trail. Then jumped onto a connector to Badger Brawl Trail. Next, added a couple short trails to reach distance goal.

Plz note, Paseo and it's connectors are sidewalks + Sonoran Foothills is all thru a neighborhood.

Working on finishing up more areas on the HAZ list, in this case the Sonoran Preserve N. Believe it or not, I actually only have the flat stuff left except for the Tramonto Trail and Peak. I have four more trails to finish off this area. I was going to do this hike on Friday but it was a tad too windy for me to do that many miles, I know, pathetic. But now that I'm retired, I can be choosy :D .

I created a route so that I could get 3 of the missing trails. As I started walking on the sidewalk Skip Rimsza Connector, I guess I didn't realize the first few miles would all be on sidewalk as I thot there might have been a trail next to the sidewalk. Continuing on the East Skip Rimsza Paseo I was wondering who thot we needed an ultra wide sidewalk to stretch for a couple miles alongside a road that had bike shoulders. I'm not sure of the history of this somewhat extravagant walkway. The traffic noise is awful but I enjoyed the scenery.
2-5-2022 I finally found a link about the Sonoran Boulevard https://www.phoenix.gov/streets/project ... -boulevard

I guess I never noticed the decorated cement siding either as it's really quite nicely done; you'll have to see the pictures. There was one section where the sidewalk had a spur that went down next to a bridge over the wash that I thot would have a sidewalk on the other side, but it didn't. No big deal as I just walked over the rocks and back up to the main sidewalk.

I came across the first junction to connect with Badger Brawl Trail but had mapped out to hook up with the next junction that also connects up with the Badger Brawl. I didn't see any other hikers on this section but did see a few bike riders. Finally I got to go over an opening in the fenceline to join up on the connector to Badger Brawl. Neither of these particular trails are mapped out on HAZ but they are marked with signs.

I was glad to get away from the traffic noise and have my feet on dirt as I veered north to hook up with Badger Brawl Trail. The desert really is pretty in the Preserve and I always enjoy it. The trail tread is mostly nice throughout so you can walk and gawk fairly safely.

As I got nearer the Dove Valley area I saw a tall structure that I could hear and see a long hose going up and down. I have no idea what it is; maybe a well of some sort? The trail actually continues to the east at the intersection but I went west on the North Cliff Walk Badger Brawl Connector as it skirts the south side of the tall dirt wall encasement of the Cave Creek Landfill. You can see this Landfill from quite a distance as I saw it from the Paseo North. Just past here is a fabulous stance of cholla on both sides of the trail. And then there is this one area you pass through where the grass is long and very green as are the trees and bushes on each side.

Now it was down into Cave Creek along side this incredible dirt conglomerate of the high side of the Cave Creek wall on the Esplanade Cliff Walk Connector. There were also a bunch of green ribbons tied here and on the other side. Being back on the west side of Cave Creek on the Esplanade Trail and heading south in more familiar territory was nice. It was also very green over here too. I did encounter a runner, the first person I'd seen since I left the south side of my hike.

I checked out both the owl nests but it's too early for anyone to be home. The light was shining nicely on some of the cactus so I tried to capture it a couple times with moderate success. The trail has remnants of being muddy in a couple places. Next was the turn south on the Apache Wash Trail for that last leg back to the TH. Nearer the area where you cross over Apache Wash I encountered two people. I did the wide swing back to Tonto 3 to finish off my 8 1/2 mile day.

Doing some Rx on the Preserve I did find this; I didn't realize how many acres it was: 2016 City land acquisitions reach 9,671 acres for Sonoran Preserve at a cost of $325 million. Still couldn't fin anything on what it cost for the Paseo infrastructure; it had to cost a lot!

WATCH: 8.57 miles (high point 1904, low point 1741) avg bpm 125, max 144 (16% Zone 3 Aerobic, 80% Zone 2 Weight Control) burning 1017 calories. Starting temp 69.8 degrees, 19% humidity finishing at 4:30PM

After work run. Not the best of trails, especially if you factor in that the last part, Skip Rimza, is a sidewalk. Got to the Apache Wash TH around 4pm. Loop included Apache Wash, Badger Brawl, connector trail and the Skip Rimza. I’ve done these trails numerous times, with the exception of the connector trail so it was kind of nice to revisit the connector trail. Otherwise it was just good to get out. Weather was great - mid 90’s, with a nice breeze. Met 1 biker while I was out there, but felt like I had the park to myself. Wildlife included a couple of prairie dogs at the parking area (very cute - watched them scavenging for food from my car) and a chipmunk out on the trail.

Staying on trails I know and that are somewhat smooth for the moment. Quite a few hikers and bike riders as expected. Hiked clockwise. Whomever is doing the trimming is doing a terrible job! I saw several errors in their work that they'll just have to trim again. So either the training is bad, if any, or the volunteers missed the memo on how to properly trim.

Tried to exercise my wrist and upper body during the smoother parts of the hike. Saw quite a few families today. The barrell cactus looked especially good, plump and colorful. Got to finally have a beer after my hike. The trailhead was quite entertaining. Very mulit-lingual too.

WATCH: 5.77 miles 146 avg bpm, 187 max. 64% in zone 5 (that's surprising to me but I did try to push it) 20% in zone 4 and 16% in zone 3 burning 812 calories. Temp at start 69.8 and 18% humidity finishing at 4:27PM.

Easy after work hike. This was more to just stretch the legs and cross one off the get er done list. Parking lot was fairly full, but didn't see any hikers on the "trails" I was on. (This trail is a sidewalk, so don't really blame them). There were several bikers out enjoying this trail and the weather. No wildlife.

Low temps and sunshine seemed to suggest a long, but not too strenuous, hike. Hit the eastern side of the Northern Sonoran Preserve for a convoluted meander. Not many folks on the trail today.

The pups and I started our hike around 5am. We did a figure 8 with the Badger Brawl Trail and the Cliff Walk Trail. We then hiked back on East Skip Rimsza Paseo. We also added 2 connector trails. Great weather for June. The cloud cover was great.
I only have a small section of the Cliff Walk Trail and the Esplanade Trail left in the North Sonoran Preserve..

The only trail I haven't done in the Southern part of the Sonoran Preserve, was the Bobcat trail. Wanting to do more than just the bobcat trail, I came up with a connector trail to the Northern Portion of the Preserve. I parked near a park in the housing area in-between both Preserves. The pups and I started our hike around 4:30am. I used the trails in the neighborhood to get to the Bobcat Trailhead. We had a great view of the moon on the West side. We then had a great sunrise to the East. I wish I had brought my camera. I opted out and left it in my truck. The Bobcat trail took about a half hour to hike in and out. I then took the neighborhood trails to the West Skip Rimsza Paseo Trail. I was only planning on hiking about 1/2 of this trail. With the early start and the decent weather, I decided to finish the West Skip trail. We then took a small portion of the Ocotillo trail back to the West Skip Trail. With it getting hot outside, I decided to take the paved trail back, instead of hiking more of the Ocotillo trail. I didn't want to run into any snakes on the way back. It seemed to be a logical plan. Getting close to the end of the West Skip trail, I looked at my phone/gps and looked back up..... My Jack Russell was face to face with a small rattlesnake. Miss Ellie touched her nose right by the snakes mouth. The snake then stuck out the forked tongue. Miss Ellie listens well, and she came right back to me when I yelled. I was extremely lucky...... The snake never moved or shook its rattles. We then hiked the last mile to the truck. Rayna and I then took a 15 minute break at the park under a tree. I guess Miss Ellie wasn't done. She did 5 laps around a soccer goal chasing after birds. The 12 miles wasn't enough for her.
I did see 3 large coyotes before we parked, 3 smaller coyotes near the trail, plenty of rabbits and birds, oh and 1 rattlesnake.
I have been debating for years, weather or not to get a vaccine for rattlesnakes, for my dogs. I think my mind is now made up.
