Planned on an off trail peak. Then I got sick and she became injured. Cancel that. On Friday I reached out to a few friends to see if anyone was down for a more chill outing. A couple of them bit. Happy to be able to get out.

However, the road was blocked off to get to Secret Trail. One of them quickly suggested Kachina. I then mentioned let's use an alternative starting point. Next that road was closed. One of them commented as we passed a busy pull off. I then advised to turn around and start from there.

This still provided us some extra oomph at the start. We connected up to Kachina at the wilderness sign. Ahh, this place is magical. Decided to turn around where the burn zone begins, bout 3/4 a mile from the jct. Took a diff side trail back down that was easier to follow and without the deadfall.

My hiking buddy Jackson invited me to join him on this trail. I have never hiked this one, so I was all in for sure. Cooler temps and hiking in the mountains compared to Satan’s Playland down here in the valley, oh yeah!

We arrived at 7am to the trailhead near Snow Bowl. There were already a few cars there. And, a couple groups of hikers started off the same time as we did.

It did not take long for this trail to reveal itself as beautiful. We decided to make it an out and back and turn around at the Wetherford Trail junction.

The trail is in very good condition, with only a few sections that made us look at the track to figure out which way to go. The biggest thing that surprised me was all of the ferns. I thought I was in Olympic National Park. It was a jungle in some sections. Add in some ponderosa pine and fir trees to the numerous aspen trees, it made for a stunning hike.

The trail was busy, but it was the 4th of July weekend after all. I would guess we came across 20 different groups. Many of them while we were almost back to the TH. Lots of doggos and families out enjoying the scenery.

The hike was a series of ups and downs, with no major hikes up. The shade along a big part of this hike was really nice, but the direct sun in the open sections were ok as well as the weather was 70’s-80’s. Once the forest opens up a little, you get great views of Flagstaff below. Mount Eldon, NAU, the Lowell Observatory, Fort Valley and of course, great views of Agassiz Peak and Fremont Peak.

I will definitely be back to hit this one again. I think I found a new leaf-peeper trail to explore in the fall.

After hiking Humphreys & Fremont earlier in the day, I had some time to kill before driving back to Flagstaff. There was a No Kings protest scheduled for 2:30-4:30PM downtown, not far from where I was staying, so rather than risk getting stuck in traffic and potentially blocked from getting back to the hotel, I decided to add another short hike. I walked to Kachina from the Snowbowl parking area and planned to hike out ~ two miles and turn around.

There wasn't anything too spectacular or unusual about the trail, but it was consistently pleasant throughout. Plenty of shade in the afternoon with a combination of aspens and pines, no burned areas along the portion of the trail I hiked, and a few areas with nice rock formations and a large alcove along the trail. I passed a few groups going both directions and was done in about an hour. Well-timed...no protest delays by the time I got back to downtown Flagstaff.

Last time I had done this trail was my "pre-HAZ" days, so well over 23 years ago. I remember having my now adult daughter in a "baby-backpak"!! :)

I also don't remember this trail being "moderate" (but rather easier) - however, yesterday was a bit more challenging than I had anticipated (probably because of my rapidly declining and aging bod and/or the elevation.)

Did this hike with my younger friend David - we had good conversation and enjoyed a beautiful day!!

We drove in from Elden Springs, and left my vehicle at Shultz Tank, taking his up to Snowbowl.
Uneventful day, saw a beautiful deer about 50 yards away (see pics) - he kept his eye on us, but never bolted. Stopped for a shady snack/break, but giant mosquitos forced us to end early!

My 57 y/o feet were pretty sore by the time we got back to Shultz Tank (via Weatherford)

The forecast called for snow and I didn't want to camp in a cold storm, but knew that in October we'd have to be there early to catch the best conditions before it melted. So after an early drive up north we were presented with a perfect wintry autumn morning.

To avoid the cluster that is Aspen Corner, we set out from Hart Prairie, crossed Snowbowl Road, and found our way up to the Kachina Trail. A handful of other hikers were enjoying the day in the first 12 feet of the trail, and after that there was nobody else. Borderline comical if you really think about it.

On the return, we considered hitting Agassiz for a bevvy, but the traffic near HP quickly put the kibosh on that plan, and upon seeing the shoulder to shoulder line of people heading down the nature loop, we opted to skip that part for a more direct path through the prairie. As is 100% reliable here, we encountered at least a dozen deer enjoying the afternoon.

The forecast had called for scattered snow showers with some accumulation all day ... none of which materialized as clear skies dominated. That changed as we set out to find somewhere to camp, with a fierce evening snow squall that quickly dumped 3-4 inches, reduced visibility, and made finding somewhere dry and clear impossible, even 2000 feet lower in elevation.

So, alas, camp was a bit of an adventure, but we were prepared enough to make it an enjoyable night. It never did stop snowing, though the ground melt offset the snowfall somewhat with only about 8" of accumulation in the morning.

We spent a few hours enjoying the hills around the peaks before heading back down to the valley.

You can never be sure when the first real snowfall of winter happens (sometimes not until January!), so I'm glad I made the effort to take advantage of this brief October aberration.

Got some peeps out for this despite the stormy forecast. Rocky dirt road run adjacent to the trail. Needless to say, no other vehicles at the starting point.

Hiked trail in reverse which feels correct. Wading through ferns and enjoying the beauty. 4th time to this spot. 1st time from spur trail. No difficult section, just slowly wears you down.

Veit Springs trailhead up the road and cross country to Kachina Trail. Walked the snowmaking pond road up a ways and then returned on the powerline route to Veit trailhead.

After work hike on Kachina Trail and then Snowbowl back roads to 10,000 feet. Great sunset through hazy skies, hermit thrush songs, and lots of thick dust on the trail turning my legs volcanic brown.

Long day from Humphreys saddle over to Fremont Peak. We summited and then immediately headed back down as a storm was rolling in a couple hours earlier than anticipated. We tried to get below treeline as quickly as possible to take a break but rain/hail made it a little challenging to relax, so ate some snacks quickly and continued out.

We were going to O’Leary but there didn’t look like there was much snow so we went over to Kachina instead since the goal was a snowshoe. No one on the trail and first tracks for us.

On our second day in Flagstaff we headed to the Kachina Trail on the south side of the San Francisco Peaks. This is another great fall hike. Very few people at the trail head. This is a pleasant walk through Pine, fir and aspen forests broken up with grassy meadows. Great views to the south. The aspen trees were in full color. This hike was 10.3 miles round trip and even though I consider this a fairly level hike it does have a lot of little ups and downs, enough to give you about 1700 feet of accumulated elevation gain.

The trail was in good condition and easy to follow, there was no water along the trail in any of the creeks but this is typical except in spring when the snow is melting.

Sometimes you just need to put all the distractions of everyday on hold and spend some time in the wilderness with the people who make a difference in your life. Sunday was one of those days.

I don't know why I don't do this hike more. In 2007 on my first visit I decided it was my favorite hike in the state. I've hiked almost 1,400 unique trails since then, and it's really tough for me to come up with anything to change that opinion. For all the fires that have occurred nearby over the years, I'm glad that most of this landscape remains pristine. It's worth the trip.

Previously hiked this trail in 2017 and 19. With this ever extending extreme heat wave in affect, this is 1 of the only trails with reasonable temps.

To change it up and add to the difficulty, we started from the Veit Springs TH. It is a pull off from Snowbowl Rd. This trail is faint with many downed trees.

Kachina is beautiful altho you do now hit a burned area as you approach the Weatherford. 😒 My blood sugar issues are clearly worsening. Must address this B4 hiking again. 😕

Evening snowshoe from Snowbowl parking lot, down Kachina Trail for a bit, then off trail to Aspen Corner, then onto the northbound Arizona Trail. Beautiful sunny day, cold and breezy, with very deep snow. Saw bobcat tracks along the route in Hart Prairie for a quarter mile or so. No other tracks on the AZT in this area. Nice sunset and alpenglow on the Peaks as I ascended Aspen Nature Loop. Great and memorable little adventure.

Evening snowshoeing from Snowbowl to the wilderness boundary and then off trail to the snowmaking lake. Close to a foot of new snow from the previous day made for quite a workout. Amazing sunset. Finished at dark.

There was a light snow falling when we arrived. It was pretty cool to see the snowy pines up top with the yellow aspens below. There were two cars when we arrived. One left shortly after as they were not dressed for winter conditions, the other belong to a group of backpackers we saw a few miles later heading out. Kinda a pumpkin show when we got back to the TH because the weather had cleared up. So many people doing fall photo shoots along the road on the way out. But other than that, timing and weather were pretty spectacular.

Hiked Kachina trail with Victoria and Juan.

This was part 1 of our "see the the leaves change color hikes".

Our plan was to hike a sizable chunk of Kachina trail to see the aspens as this would be less popular than Aspen Nature loop.

We drove up the night before and stayed at the Flagstaff KOA. Victoria and I drove up together and Juan joined us later on (Allyssa could not make it this time).

Things almost immediately got exciting. We had just finished pitching our tent and Juan pulled up when a huge windstorm began. It was accompanied by rain that was snow at higher elevations. The wind was intense, we had out tent staked down properly and it held but the top was getting completely bowed over in the gusts. Juan who was late in arriving had an absolute devil of a time getting his set up. He was also not properly equipped with cold weather and waterproof gear so he was pretty wet and numb by the time we got his tent pitched. We all took shelter but non of us got much sleep with the wind howling and the tents smacking us periodically during the night we were far from well rested when we hit the trail the following morning.

At this elevation the rain was snow and we had the pleasant winter wonderland experience of a light dusting of snow along the sides of the trail. The wind, unfortunate, did not do the aspens and leaves any favors and along Kachina trail at least most of the Aspens were blown clear of leaves. It was also bitter cold still and we curtailed the hike somewhat to warm up. Juan went home after this and we took our chances with Aspen nature loop.

We met some backpackers along the way that did not look too happy. Apparently the winds up on the mountain were gusting up to 65 mph that couldn't have been much fun. Next time I will check the weather for wind storms as well.
