Day 2 afternoon hike: Tina had read about an interesting combo of Submarine Rock and Chicken Point; you add a Hog and you got yourself an awesome Sedona hike. After lunch we headed over to Broken Arrow TH for Part 1 to the Submarine Rock.  Luckily, there was ample parking.

There was a little jeep activity as we crossed the road and headed eastward on Broken Arrow Trail.  It's always fun to walk on and off the bedrock of these trails.  We paid our respects to the Bat Cave before continuing in and out of the high desert that had low pines and various cactus.  As we were walking across a large area of bedrock we could see this soft white grass in the distance.  It looked so smooth it seemed like you should be able to pet it.  The pictures don't really show its soft look.

The next thing that caught our attention were these little round vibrant green mounds of some sort of plant or tree.  They look like little rounds of tall grass moss but they aren't.  GL couldn't pin down an identification I was happy with so hopefully someone here can chime in.  We continued into the forest as we rounded the north and east sides of the Sub.  A couple times the trail more or less disappears or you end up on bedrock and have to look around a bit.  We finally made it to the stern end but boarded Submarine Rock from the starboard side.  It was a bit windy but we enjoyed our time as we made our way to the sail/bow.  Rather than exiting where we boarded I found us a little crevice to get down and we headed on back to the junction we would take to Chicken Point.

As we headed south on Broken Arrow Trail Deborah got a phone call from a friend that had relocated to Spain so she took that call as we hiked to Chicken Point. She was on the call all the way to the Point.  As usual, there was lots of traffic, people and vehicular and bikes.  Soon we were in the shade of the Twin Buttes where we came to the next junction to the Hogs that we would take on the third leg of our hike.  Now Tina had an issue with a deposit for her son's college in Canada, so she was texting regarding that until we got to Chicken Point.  Fortunately, we were able to keep moving and there was no need to be in a hurry.  We arrived at what I call the false summit as you have to make one more pass through a forested section to an area that overlooks Chicken Point.  Then it's down and over to Chicken Point.  It was pretty crowded but we were able to get our pictures.

And now for part 3 of our hike, we headed north on Broken Arrow Trail for High on the Hog.  We were totally in shade now and it was a little bit chilly.  High on the Hog Trail was a little dicey in areas and once again, Tina was hiking on a ledge but we all had fun and enjoyed the challenge.  Once we got over to a slightly steep down section with great construction it dawned on me I had done this trail with Kelly (back in 2016).  We all made it down and admired our environment and its little challenges.  We appreciated those bike riders that tackled this one way trail for them.

We did spot some ice over on the hillside before arriving at the Twin Buttes Trail intersection where you initially swing east.  Well this trail continued to deliver on Sedona's hiking beauty.  We even ran into some more ice.  We got a closer view of a big white spot on the rocks that you can see from the Hyatt (looks like a waterfall).  We learned the following morning (while on our Palatki Ruins tour) that it is calcite or calcium (I can't remember which) deposits that we saw.  This area has lots of trees including Arizona Cypress.  We passed by a drainage that had what was frozen water as there was still a little ice. The Twin Buttes was definitely the icing on this cake, a delightfull surprise.

This was a great Triple Threat and needless to say, a great place to take your hiking friends.  I don't think I kept my phone camera idle very much; took lots of movies and pictures... so did Tina.

Cool down hike after the GC. True, it was a day later, but it was a nice way to stretch the legs and what better place than Sedona! I had forgotten how nice the trails are in this area. Definitely need to make ivisiting this area a higher priority. Got to the Broken Aarow TH around 10am. Short, but rough entry to get to the TH with parking for about 15 cars. It being a Monday there was still plenty of parking....(in the past I have come up on the weekend and found no parking spaces available...of course, that is true for most of Sedona on the weekends :? ). Was on a time schedule so the hike was fluid. Went in on Broken Arrow to where it connected to High on the Hog. This is a sweet but short trail. I was hoping it would get some more elevation, however after gaining a little bit of elevation at the start it leveled out. Still offered some great views. Kind of reminded a little of the Hangover. It was over too quickly, dropping down and juncturing with Twin Buttes and Hog Heaven. Time being what it was I opted for a short lasso using the Twin Buttes trail that connected back to the Broken Arrow. Really beautiful area. Definitely worthy of a revisit.

Walked to the trailhead.
First time doing this loop and first time going beyond Mystic trail. Wasn’t a fan off Mystic, too rocky narrow and prickly pears too close to the trail.
Peccary trail and Hog Wash offers nice sweeping views of neighborhoods. Too a side trip to High on the Hog one of my favorite spots. Eerie to see empty trails beneath me, no jeeps no ,pints in bikes...quiet.
First time on Hog Heaven. Ran into a group of stuck mountain bikers twice as they contemplated the steep and slick downhill sections of Hog Heaven.
Recommend hitting this trail early to avoid potentially getting run over by a speeding mountain bike :D Not a lot of sections to step off here.

Bell Rock Trail
Excellent tread. Old road. IMO it adapts well to demand, curbs destruction and maintains impact within reason. Key being the hearty fencing. Which are short long lasting log poles with a single strand wire. Cuts down on spider use-trails. Doesn't beg to be destroyed as you could easily step over it. Dad always said locks do not prevent thieves, they keep honest people honest.

Courthouse Butte Loop Trail
Our hike covered a majority. This hike is good for those looking for an easy hike with a high volume red rock experience.

Rabbit Ears
Upped my rating from 2 to 3. Descent tread. Possibly the best option to get away from crowds in this network of trails through world class red rock. That said I don't detest crowds and the Rabbit Ears themselves look like trouble to explore.

Llama Trail
Works well to bridge over to the Little Horse network of trails. Mountain bikers can fly through so stay alert.

Little Horse Trail #61
Under appreciated. Solid choice if it works into the web you weave. We walked over a 2 foot slender snake just before reaching Little Horse TH.

Chapel Trail
Like the bag cotton candy comes in you'll forget it after it's served its purpose. Two guys with gps got off trail not paying attention then almost got passed by a family they recently passed. Good chuckle for the memory bank.

Mystic Trail
Near neighborhood. Nobody's favorite. Incredible red rock views nevertheless.

Pig Tail Trail
Added to HAZ. Sedona is determined to put the McDowell spaghetti network to shame. Good alternative to northern Mystic.

Hog Wash Trail
We only hiked 0.2 mi. Can be used to bridge Broken Arrow Trail. Most use from that trailhead.

Hog Heaven Trail
It goes up in grip-n-grunt style. Forget the stroller, it's a big girl trail. We lunched in heaven before getting High on the Hog based on previous experience. Perfect.

High on the Hog Trail
The red rock party continues.

HT Trail
This gets you under SR 179. Nothing special, appreciated.

Easy Breezy Trail
Alternative to Templeton Trail. We crossed paths with a group that tried in earnest to ask hiking questions. We cordially chatted without breaking pace. A minute later wondered how the high school smokers group wandered so far out yonder.

Cathedral Rock Trail #170
The trail was busy as expected. I had trouble balancing the first step into the groove. A kid screaming his head off at the saddle for simple attention was the highlight.

Bruce found a path on satellite to bridge over to Hiline. Not a zoo, far from deserted. Rivals the Hangover Trail.

Hiline Trail
Finally got to check this one out. Brian published the guide here on HAZ two years ago and it screamed winner.

Slim Shady Trail
V.O.C. aorta to Templeton. A nice juniper dense trail. We only hiked 0.1 mi so the naggin rhythm never caught on... May I have your attention, please? Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

Coconino Trail
This is now an official trail. This short access trail to Yavapai Trailhead is really an extension of the also short Hermit Trail.

Synopsis
Liked this four years ago. The Hiline tweak easily puts it in the top 3 Sedona mini mega loops.

A tweak of a redo of a trek done 4 years ago.

1) You can't go wrong with the views on any of these trails.
2) The weather and clouds made this a memorable hike that photos do not do justice.
3) Hog Heaven, High on the Hog, the unnamed use trail from Cathedral Trail and Highline are standouts.
4) With the new route found from Cathedral to Hiline, I will never do the full Cathedral Rock Trail again.
5) This track has been added to the playlist.

Beautiful, scenic loop just outside Sedona. We were treated to Pink Jeeps and Land Crusiers banging their way through Broken Arrow. We timed the hike just right to get to the Chapel of the Holy Cross just after it opened. Excellent breakfast at Red Rock Cafe afterwards.

this is the one i couldn't wait for. modified the Bruce/Joe loop by tagging on some excellent additional trail miles and circling around behind cathedral. there was a big storm front moving in that evening so i knew i was on the clock a little bit for this one.

started off messing around up on the beautiful bell rock. went up the lower chute and decided in the interest of time (ie storm) to call it there, for this trip. i will be back for the top one day. scrambled down and around on courthouse butte. took a minute to figure out the unmarked loop out to the rabbit ears. the way out is a bit of a rocky slog, but once you hit the high point, loop around to magnificent view of the rabbit ears and bring it home on the much more entertaining northern leg, this becomes a much more worthwhile excursion!

scenic traverse on llama and little horse over to chicken point for the next high yield part of the hike. views from chicken point are always wonderful. broken arrow is great, then the absolutely fantastic high on the hog and hog heaven trails. man i love these two trails. completed the loop around the mountains on hog wash, mystic and chapel trails. headed back to 179 then crossed under it on little horse and the surprisingly nice HT trails.

next up was probably my most anticipated part of the day looping over to, up/down, then around cathedral. the templeton trail is underrated in my opinion and the segment from HT to cathedral junction, i found to be lovely. this is when the weather really moved in. i contemplated bailing on going up/down cathedral since i've done it numerous times. instead i decided to just put on my bobby rockets and blast up and down. more templeton awesomeness to the creek, then short but sweet crossover on baldwin to the Hiline trail. Folks, we have another sedona winner with the Hiline Trail. completely awesome trail, with sections remniscent of the hogs/hangover. the weather was pretty crazy at this point so i had to keep it moving, but this was really outstanding. i had earlier notions of adding a few extra miles at the end with looping made in the shade and slim shady, but it was pretty clear it was time to call it a day. and i was getting sick of the wind at this point too. ha

outstanding big day out there, without that many people all things considered. my gps screwed up on me for a while on the little horse and broken arrow trails, so the numbers associated with my gps route are not right (a little too low, especially the elevation). for those interested, the route is good though.

Although it is obviously a pretty well-used bike trail, the only other human was one trail-runner over the whole 5 mile loop (includes the 2 linked trails and hiking out-and-back to Chicken Point on the Broken Arrow Trail as well). Cemetery is an interesting stop-over with some older headstones, although the Verde Valley Cyclists Coalition should invest in spell-check - as on a multitude of their expensive signs they have it marked as cemetary. :o igallery/image_page.php?id=5269
For an urban(ish) hike this little loop has some decent views.

A pleasant outing up into a small canyon, then along the eastern base of Twin Buttes and returning via Devil's Dining Room. All trails in great shape. Lightly traveled this weekday afternoon. Routes can be difficult to follow across slickrock sections; keep eyes out for large basket cairns and those ubiquitous pink jeeps.

Sun was out today with a vengeance!

Hardly any cars at the parking lot when I started and by the time I was finished lot was full.

Temps were in the 30s early on and rose up to the mid 50s. Winds were 10mph. Multiple icy patches and hardened uneven mud quickly turned cold slushy pools of mud. Did not encounter any other hikers going to High on the Hog, saw some on the way down from Chicken Point. Jeep tours were active that morning.
Trails were super photogenic today and ended up taking a ton of pictures. Still seeing a lot of snow up Wilson.

It may have been a poor choice to break in the new trail running shoes that are not specific for muddy terrain.
Ended up slipping and hyper extending my knee. :(

Overcast and mildly humid trail run. I don't know how I feel about the carved steps on high on the hog. There's also a steel rod sticking out...watch out bikers. :( Steps weren't there the last time I was on the trail, about 2 weeks ago.

Ah..first trail run in a wind tunnel.

We were supposed to get snow Christmas day so I wasn't sure I could get a run in that day. So even though it was overcast and the the winds were supposed to be in the high 20s, I decided to go for a trailrun. :y:

The forecast called for rain at around 11am (halfway through my run) but didn't actually get some precipitation until after 12nn. Saw a few groups of hikers already going down on my way up Chicken Point and only saw 2 other groups at Broken Arrow.

Winds were supposed to be in the high 20s, I thought no big deal. :o
By the time I made it up to Chicken Point things got real. I had to run after my cap about 20 yards after the wind blew it off my head (time to wear it under the hood?). Reminded me of the summit of Wheeler Peak those gusts.
instagram.com/p/BOc ... nenk (warning if you are wearing headphones you might want to turn it down a little bit). No debris though for the duration of the run. Winds eventually calmed down at the juncture of Chapel Trail. I saw only 1 other group of hikers going up as I was going down. The guy had a tripod..wonder how that photo shoot turned out. :D

The trail was not muddy at all, just nice and cushy beneath my feet. Surprisingly there were a few Pink Jeep tours out on the trail that day. I did not see any at Chicken Point by the time I was heading back.
Clouds were big and gray, sun peeking just slightly, it snowed later that afternoon.

first time on this trail. we went out to chicken point (stunning), then did an out and back on High On the Hog (spectacular) and on the way back hit Submarine Rock. great network of trails in this area. loved it

as is typical in sedona everything is well signed and easy to follow. all kinds of possibilities to make loops out here

For all the times I've hiked in Sedona, I've never really hiked much in this area. I put together a loop, Joe tweaked it a bit, and we were off.

First up, getting to the top of Bell Rock. Joe picked a decent ascent route to the top. There are only a couple spots that make you think a bit. We had the top to ourselves. Great morning views of the area.

Video from the top :next: youtu.be/51Jch9Byq18

Next up, an area that's off the main drag. I've wanted to get a better view of the "Rabbit Ears" and found this unmarked loop on Satellite View that get's you close. We saw one mountain biker, walking her bike on the trail and that was it. A nice little change from the perfectly groomed Sedona main corridor trails.

Just before making it to Chicken Point, I lost Joe to a Yoga Class for a bit.

The High on the Hog and Hog Heaven Trails need to be put on your list if you are in this area. We were calling this the Hangover junior Trail. Great trail with great views.

After taking Joe to church, it was off to Cathedral Rock. The HT Trail and Templeton Trails are a worthy alternatives to reaching Cathedral Rock. Being one of the most popular areas in Sedona, it was jumping with all types. Including Infants, puppies, yoga pants and Grandmas.

I really enjoyed this loop with perfect weather in gods country.

Bell Rock
Hands down the highlight. Using 9L's posted route it was easy to decipher. Based on the tunnel through the scrub at the bottom and the register up top this place gets a lot of visitors.

Rabbit Ears
Heard of this 11 years ago and have been mildly curious. I prefer the north part of the loop over the south. Once is probably enough. It's cool you can see the ears driving south on I-17!

The Hogs
16 years ago I mountain biked Broken Arrow. Memories of so so kept it off my return list. The Hog trails are near perfect. A low key manicured version of Hangover Trail ( favorite ). Edgy trail through lots of cypress, need I say more. Thx to tibber/gecko for bringing these great trails to light.

Templeton Trail
Bruce put this hike together. I suggested the missing spice Cathedral Rock utilizing HT & Templeton to connect. Unexpectedly found out the connectors are decent hiking. When you aren't in the cypress you are surrounded by the distant red rock formations. This trail goes to Red Rock Crossing, I may have under estimated it's potential. Tough to give it a higher rating going under a hwy and with such other great choices nearby. Let's call it a high 3.9 of 5!

Synopsis
I enjoyed the entire hike. Sedona, the forest service or whoever has done a great job with most of the trails and signage. I'm not a fan of over networked trail systems like the cough north McDowells. It works very well in this spectacular land of red rock. Wonderful weather and friendly yoga enthusiast may have made this hike better than normal.
