My Son #2 – Johnny, wanted to hike in Sedona, so we opted for the Cathedral Rock Loop. We arrived at the Baldwin Trailhead at 730am and decided to the loop clockwise – Baldwin/Templeton/Cathedral Rock/Templeton/Slim Shady/HiLine.

The weather was pleasant, but we could feel the humidity. The Templeton Trail along the backside is always nice. The creek was flowing and the shade was nice too. Once you start hiking up towards the Cathedral Rock Trail, it becomes what the rest of the day was going to be like.

Lot of people hiking up when we go to the base of the formation. I have seen way more in the past though. We made it up to the “End of Trail” and explored a little. Did the obligatory photos and started back down.

Once we got back on the Templeton Trail and started heading towards the Slim Shady junction, we lost the crowds. A couple of brave mountain bikers passed up going the opposite direction. The clouds gave way in this section, and I could feel the heat. The Slim Shady trail is a little rougher than I remember, but we made it to the HiLine junction after checking out the Yavapai Point Lookout.

I have never been on the Hiline trail and I think it was the nicest part of the entire loop. Amazing views looking north/west/east. I think the view of Cathedral Rock from this trail is as good or better than Red Rock Crossing. We saw no other hikers along this part of the hike. Mad Dogs and Englishmen, I guess. In spite of the Double Diamond “warnings” at the start, I was really surprised to see as many mountain bike tracks on this one. It’s not bad for hiking, but I would not want to ride a bike up or down in a few of the steeper sections.

As we started along the trail, we could see the thunderclouds approaching from the north. The heat was tempered by the nice cool breeze being pushed ahead of the impending storm. We made it back to the Baldwin Trailhead just as the clouds arrived. A very light sprinkle hit us, but we could see some heavy rains to the west.

After the hike, we rewarded ourselves with a visit to the Sedona Beer Company. Very nice selection of brews for sure. A wonderful day spend in Sedona. I just wish my other two sons enjoy hiking as much as Johnny does. I guess the hiking "bug" bites you or it doesn't

Made a nice loop starting on the Transept Trail starting on Verde Valley School Rd. I did a clockwise loop connecting Transept, Hiline, Slim Shady, Made in the Shady and Castle Rocks trails. There was a small bit of scrambling down the saddle between North and South Castle Rock but nothing too bad. I just stuck to the north side of the saddle. Saw among other things, what I assume was a dead coyoyte, many cool towers, and a beautiful boulder with a perfect 20' handcrack.

After a hot summer of not hiking the gang decided to head up to Sedona for an easy warm up hike. LOL. The plan was to hike a loop around Cathedral Rock going counter-clockwise. We started at Yavapai Vista following Slim Shady Trail north. Slim Shady is a pretty trail that winds north through the forest, and true to its name it was nice and shady. We turned left at the trail junction and followed the Templeton Trail toward the West. Once we got out of the forest we could see that the trail was taking us toward Cathedral Rock which got larger and larger as we approached.

When we reached the junction with the short Cathedral Rock trail we could see that there was a line of people heading up and down the rock. The sign said that it was only 0.3 miles up so we got into the line and started up. It starts with some stairs that have fences on both sides to help you stay on the trail. So far so good. Then you run out of stairs and start walking up the red rock which keeps getting steeper and steeper. For the most part it isn't too difficult but there are a couple of spots where I needed to use my hands to hold on. The steepest bits follow crevices in the rock that help give traction. There are markings painted on the rock to indicate the preferred path which help a lot. It's hard work climbing the steep rock and I had to stop and rest several times on the way up. Luckily there are plateaus periodically where one can rest out of the way of folks on the trail. The last stretch to the top has stairs so you don't have to worry about sliding down, but my legs were complaining anyway from the steep climb. But finally we got to the top which is a reasonably broad plateau just South of the Northernmost flat topped peak. Spectacular view from the top. Totally worth it. We stopped, rested, had snacks and took pictures. There's a popular picture spot on the side of that North peak that looks precarious with a several hundred foot vertical drop, but it's easy enough to get to.

I should mention that there was a high wind advisory for Coconino and about half way up the rock at the top of the steepest section we got out onto a plateau and the wind was really cranking. Not so hard that it was hard to stand, but hard enough to take hats off and generally be unpleasant. Luckily the trail had some sheltered areas after that. Anyway, after resting at the top where it wasn't windy at all, we followed the trail to the South which led to a short, steep climb to a small plateau between the spires. This spot was a wind tunnel and we only stayed long enough to catch our breath.

I was a little apprehensive about the climb down because I know that up is usually easier than down. But down wasn't so bad. I'm not ashamed to admit that I slid down on my butt on a couple of the really steep spots. But we got down in fairly short order. It was not as exhausting as going up, but my legs were really feeling it when we got to the bottom.

After a short rest we continued West on Templeton Trail. The trail wound around Cathedral Rock and then started going downhill to Oak Creek. There were lots of people along the creek since it was a warm and sunny day. We followed the creek for a short way and then got to a sign pointing us up the hill away from the Creek. When we got to the junction with the Baldwin Trail we went left to take the shorter segment of the loop towards the Hiline Trail which we followed back to the start.

Hiline Trail started out gently climbing which was ok. But then there were some seriously steep sections. At the top of the steepest rocky chute there were several mountain bikers working up the nerve to continue down the trail. We were heading up and didn't wait to see if anyone did that kamikaze run. I'm not a mountain biker, but it didn't look survivable to me. After that super steep section it leveled off for a bit, and then climbed some more. Not quite as steep but more than enough for my tired legs. Eventually we reached the ridge and the trail levelled out. This part of the trail is on the plateau on the South side of Cathedral Rock, and we were almost level with where we climbed on Cathedral Rock trail.

Hiline followed the ridge away from Cathedral Rock to the next mountain to the South, and then climbed some more. Ugh. At a plateau there is a junction with the Transept Trail, but we stayed on Hiline which traversed around the mountain at the high elevation we had reached. That explains the trail name. After what seemed forever we finally started going downhill and back to the Yavapai Vista.

It was a lot more distance and elevation than I had wanted for a first hike of the season, but there were amazing views all along the way.

Day out with a small group, running pace was faster than I usually prefer these days, but the breaks were long. Like we just got to talking and forgot we were out for a run, and the elderly couples we passed would catch back up to us. I've done this loop in the opposite direction, it's a fun one, and it was surprisingly not overly crowded until the very late stages, when the mountain bikers started swarming. Temperatures were perfect.

Riding Sedona trails with the Estrella Casual Riders. Got stuck in a big traffic delay on 179 on the way into the Village of Oak Creek (and a much smaller delay heading out). Great loop with fun company. Stopped for lunch at Maria's Mexican food in Village of Oak Creek - highly recommended!

Day 3 of birthday mountain bike rides in Sedona. Well, today was my birthday and a parking spot opened up at Bell Rock just as I pulled in! Fantastic! Slim Shady and Easy Breezy may be my all time favorite mountain bike trails. So fun! So scenic!

Went up to Oak Creek this morning to ride an epic loop on the mountain bikes with SCA. Got to Bell Rock trail head around 6:30 and easily found a parking space. Surprised at how few other trail users we saw once we got a small distance from a trailhead.

Started a bit later than planned. Only one car at the trailhead when we got there, lot full by the time we finished.
Probably less than half a mile in, took a nice fall on your face eat some dirt fall..thanks to a rock sticking out an inch from the ground. That jolted me awake. :y:
Got confused at the usual spot halfway Slim Shady, went way up the mesa instead of staying in the middle part. Very few wild flowers, ocotillos looking nice and alive..
No forest service presence when we got to the base of Cathedral Rock trail which has been closed.
A very very small part of me thought that would be the perfect time to take Josie up there since the trail is empty. :-s
This network of trails has always been confusing for me since I rarely go here, so of course went the wrong way on HT for about 0.3. miles before turning around.
Warmed up quickly so we were happy to be on Easy Breezy to complete our loop.

Only ran into 2 hikers and 2 mountain bikers to Cathedral and saw the same group looping back through Easy Breezy. 2 other hikers or Hermit. :y:

It's always a blast to hike with the Stiller when I get to town. This was an inspired choice. I was surprised to realize that I'd never done anything in the main part of Red Rock country south of Sedona so this hike was much appreciated. I was amazed that this was the first hike I'd done with Stiller where I drove. I'm not sure he appreciated my California-style driving (it wasn't that bad), but we got back pretty early which was cool.
I like the Arizona cypress that are found in the area.

Jim made plans to be in town early for the holiday and wanted to do a hike for this weekend. I was set on another Sedona hike. I hadn't ever yet hiked in the central portion of Sedona, probably because that's where most of the crowds are. The Hiline looked like an interesting trail to center around, and get a few others in as well. I was up at 3:30am and out the door by 5. After meeting up at the Happy Valley park and ride and a few stops on the way up, we started hiking at 8am.

From the Courthouse Vista TH, we headed north on the Slim Shady Trail, then took the Hiline westbound. The climb up to the Hiline didn't seem like much, but we had very nice views fairly quickly. Around the bend gave very nice views of Cathedral Rock. At the end of the Hiline Trail, we did a figure 8 with the Baldwin Trail, then headed back to the Slim Shady Trail along the Templeton Trail, then took Slim Shady back tot he car.

Saw only one hiker and one biker along the Hiline, then when we got to the Baldwin Trail, the crowds were out, but nothing too back. The west half of the Hiline Trail was very steep and rugged, making us wonder how the biker was able to get down that. The Templeton Trail was covered with the dead fall foliage, making for scenery you don't normally see much of in AZ.

The crowds really weren't bad, especially considering the weather and how close to the holiday it is. The tourists make it obvious that they're out of town and haven't seen Sedona before, which gives me more of an appreciation of how nice it is to live close enough to be there in 2-3 hours for a dayhike.

The weather started very cool, around 40 degrees, and got warm enough to shed the sweatshirt, but never hot. Very sunny all day, making for great photo conditions.

Got back home around 6pm and spent a good portion of the evening fixing the brakes on my wife's car. Very busy, but very satisfying day.

A tweak of a redo of a trek done 4 years ago.

1) You can't go wrong with the views on any of these trails.
2) The weather and clouds made this a memorable hike that photos do not do justice.
3) Hog Heaven, High on the Hog, the unnamed use trail from Cathedral Trail and Highline are standouts.
4) With the new route found from Cathedral to Hiline, I will never do the full Cathedral Rock Trail again.
5) This track has been added to the playlist.

Bell Rock Trail
Excellent tread. Old road. IMO it adapts well to demand, curbs destruction and maintains impact within reason. Key being the hearty fencing. Which are short long lasting log poles with a single strand wire. Cuts down on spider use-trails. Doesn't beg to be destroyed as you could easily step over it. Dad always said locks do not prevent thieves, they keep honest people honest.

Courthouse Butte Loop Trail
Our hike covered a majority. This hike is good for those looking for an easy hike with a high volume red rock experience.

Rabbit Ears
Upped my rating from 2 to 3. Descent tread. Possibly the best option to get away from crowds in this network of trails through world class red rock. That said I don't detest crowds and the Rabbit Ears themselves look like trouble to explore.

Llama Trail
Works well to bridge over to the Little Horse network of trails. Mountain bikers can fly through so stay alert.

Little Horse Trail #61
Under appreciated. Solid choice if it works into the web you weave. We walked over a 2 foot slender snake just before reaching Little Horse TH.

Chapel Trail
Like the bag cotton candy comes in you'll forget it after it's served its purpose. Two guys with gps got off trail not paying attention then almost got passed by a family they recently passed. Good chuckle for the memory bank.

Mystic Trail
Near neighborhood. Nobody's favorite. Incredible red rock views nevertheless.

Pig Tail Trail
Added to HAZ. Sedona is determined to put the McDowell spaghetti network to shame. Good alternative to northern Mystic.

Hog Wash Trail
We only hiked 0.2 mi. Can be used to bridge Broken Arrow Trail. Most use from that trailhead.

Hog Heaven Trail
It goes up in grip-n-grunt style. Forget the stroller, it's a big girl trail. We lunched in heaven before getting High on the Hog based on previous experience. Perfect.

High on the Hog Trail
The red rock party continues.

HT Trail
This gets you under SR 179. Nothing special, appreciated.

Easy Breezy Trail
Alternative to Templeton Trail. We crossed paths with a group that tried in earnest to ask hiking questions. We cordially chatted without breaking pace. A minute later wondered how the high school smokers group wandered so far out yonder.

Cathedral Rock Trail #170
The trail was busy as expected. I had trouble balancing the first step into the groove. A kid screaming his head off at the saddle for simple attention was the highlight.

Bruce found a path on satellite to bridge over to Hiline. Not a zoo, far from deserted. Rivals the Hangover Trail.

Hiline Trail
Finally got to check this one out. Brian published the guide here on HAZ two years ago and it screamed winner.

Slim Shady Trail
V.O.C. aorta to Templeton. A nice juniper dense trail. We only hiked 0.1 mi so the naggin rhythm never caught on... May I have your attention, please? Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

Coconino Trail
This is now an official trail. This short access trail to Yavapai Trailhead is really an extension of the also short Hermit Trail.

Synopsis
Liked this four years ago. The Hiline tweak easily puts it in the top 3 Sedona mini mega loops.

The loop of Slim Shady and Made in the Shade provides a relaxing, short jaunt among the Sedona red rocks. The loop sits on the west side of the main north-south road, across from the often-featured Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, and just beneath the south end of a Seven Warriors formation. If done in the morning, the jaunt will feature evolving views of Bell Rock as the rising sun gradually illuminates the formation, plus good views of the differing colors and strata of the Seven Warriors peaks.

A special, nice twist runs above the maintained and officially-listed Slim Shady and Made in the Shade. The nice, little twist – an unregistered local trail. While the Shady-Shade loop runs at the base of formations, the local trail rises up to a ridge line at the top of the sloping sides of Seven Warriors, and just below the formation’s vertical spires and buttes.

This upper trail, though unmaintained and by all appearances unofficial, remains well-defined and easily followed. For our hike, we traveled along a short distance, and then descended, but this upper trail continues along the ridge. Why take the upper trail? Well, one almost always enjoys the quiet and uniqueness of an off-the-map path, and this one imposes no difficulties to traverse. But mainly one takes this route for the nice, expansive views, and the in-your-face perspective on the sandstone and limestone geology so richly abundant in Sedona.

Note, for the more knowledgeable, added trails, or I think the term would be routes, run further up to the top of the spires and buttes. We did not attempt those. While these routes to the top do not for the most part require technical climbing, they do rise more vertically, just a bit more treacherously, and not necessarily in a completely defined path.

After the morning ride we went and got pizza, this means I am no good for riding. My friends headed out for a 2nd ride and I chose to take a hike on Slim Shady and Templeton. Great views from here, especially once you get up to the high spots on Slim Shady. Also, these trails were pretty empty for a Saturday. good stuff.

We started at the Yavapai point trailhead. Not too crowded on a Friday. We looped across Templeton and then back around on the Highline. The Highline has some great views and only saw one other person. Makes for a nice loop.

The Slim Shady had been on my radar for awhile because I was curious as to where it came out at the Bell Rock TH. This was the third hike of the day, and I had intended to run this but blistered feet and tired legs said otherwise. Got on the trails just after 11am. From the Yavapai Point TH I started off by heading down Hermit Trail. This was a short, downhill trail, only .3 miles long, that brought me to the Templeton Trail. The Templeton took me north and west to the juncture with the Slim Shady. This is where the Slim Shady starts. For about a mile, it is a gradual climb to the intersection with the Kaibab Trail. I got say this mile is pretty sweet. You are going up what is primarily a dry wash, so the views are limited, but I don't think I've come across a Sedona dry wash that I didn't like, this one included. There are quite a few slabs of red rock along this wash that really make this section beautiful to hike. The Kaibab juncture is pretty much the high point. From here on, it is a gradual descent until you reach the Bell Rock TH. The trail ends right across the road from where you turn into the Bell Rock TH. (This is what the trail description says, but it is not as obvious as you might think it would be). There is a sign for the Slim Shady at this end, but it is about 20ft off the road and is partially obscured by a tree so it is hard to see from the road. I was surprised to see that there is a trail junction at this end for the Canyon Circle Trail. I was surprised because I don't recall seeing this trail on any maps. I have a feeling that this Canyon trail bleeds into Oak Creek Village...so it may be more of a town trail. Still, I'll have to check it out. Return hike was uneventful. I did take the Coconino trail back to the parking lot. Despite my feet, I enjoyed this trail.

Be aware, this seems to be a popular biking trail and there are quite a few hidden turns. No problems today, but I can see the potential for problems.
