Got to the Cathedral TH just after 7am and was able to grab the last parking spot. It being an early Monday morning, this caught me by surprise. (There was still room in the overflow parking area however).
There is signage for the Easy Breezy Trail directly at the TH so I took that in thinking that was the start to the trail. The trail was very straightforward and easy to follow. It played with a wash for a good portion of its journey eastward. Initially it provided some decent views of Cathedral Rock, but for the most part the views were much more intimate, dealing with wash walls and some of the most perfectly formed pine trees I’ve seen - almost like they were manicured. The trail does start to gain some elevation as it turns south passing the HT and Templeton trails. It then passes under the 179 highway and spends a surprising amount of time between the north and south bound lanes. And I’ll be honest, this isn’t as bad as it sounds. Even though I could hear the traffic, the trail does a great job of disguising the fact that I had traffic flowing around me. The trail eventually “T”’s into the Templeton....(still in between the north and south bound lanes of the 179). My thought was that I had just done all of the Easy Breezy. With that in mind, I took the Templeton for a short distance to where it connected to the Easy Breezy and took the Easy Breezy back toward the TH. This would have created a “lasso look” to my hike. As I neared the TH I discovered a sign that pointed the Easy Breezy trail heading away from the TH. This segment, though not long (maybe .25 miles) took me up to the base of Cathedral Rock and ended with (of all trails) the Templeton.. Basically what happened is that Easy Breezy sign that I saw at the TH is for a trail that connects you to the Easy Breezy - a connector or user trail that quickly brings you to the actually Easy Breezy trail, that then takes off going both east and west. I would have been much better served if I had just stayed on the Templeton once the Easy Breezy “T”ed into it, creating a loop. Instead, I ended up doing an odd looking figure 8. Great hike, even though it was more convoluted than I anticipated. Didn’t see anyone until I was near the TH. No wild life on the trail, though driving home I did see a coyote with what I assumed was a mauled dead rabbit hanging from his mouth - a sight I don’t see very often. |
