Since getting back into hiking, I've been reviewing old photos and notes and making lists of hikes I want to redo and places I want to see...I recalled really enjoying the weavers loop when I did it many years ago - though I did a slightly extended loop back then, tacking on a visit to the top of black top mesa.

Unlike that last time, I tacked on some new-to-me extras by way of a detour to lone pine and a visit to robbers roost. While I'd hoped to re-do that larger loop, it was evident after my detours that I was simply not moving fast enough to have the daylight for the extra miles.

The day started bright and early, with my hitting the trailhead right around sunrise. It was novel to drive down the dirt road without plumes of dust thanks to the previous day's rains. The trailhead had a surprising number of cars when I arrived (it looked well over 2/3 full). There were volunteers from a local hiking group and the USFS setting up near the trailhead and what appeared to be the local SAR team meeting up for some practice.

After signing in at the register and some brief chitchat with the volunteers, I headed off up the Peralta Trail. Thanks to the recent rains, footing in some places was a bit slick, eroding trust in my footwear. I've only had these shoes out on dry surfaces, but have worn previous generations of this model out in wet conditions with no issue, though admittedly, the type of rock involved was likely different (predominantly sandstones and limestones rather than the volcanic stuff so prevalent in the superstitions). I was pleasantly surprised at my steady ascent to Freemont saddle with breaks only for photos and I passed more people (4) than passed me (3) - and even so, I was glad that there wasn't much traffic that early. The trail was damp underfoot with the occasional pool of water - though as it climbed higher, a novel soundtrack of burbling water could be heard with confirmed flow in the drainage upon crossing. At the saddle, I stumbled across group of climbers camped out having a leisurely morning. After the requisite photo from the overlook, I headed off towards lone tree, and was pleasantly surprised to have it all to myself. I stopped for a few minutes to enjoy the solitude and the views of the snow covered mountains in the distance (while also noting a dusting of snow on the Superstition Ridgeline).

Knowing I had miles to cover, I turned back to find the traffic had increased significantly with several groups of people clustered at the saddle. I found my way up into the hoodoos, and headed towards the ridgeline and Robbers Roost. I found the trail to be well cairned and easy to follow, though I peeled off towards the chimney rather than staying on the main trail to approach the roost from northeast. With the recent rain, there was plenty of running and pooled water up on the ridge. I managed to find my way into the roost, and after some trial and error found my way to the entry chute. Within the roost, water was flowing down the split falls and on through the bowl. It looks like some folk descend the drainage as a technical canyoneering route as there are webbing slings evident. I had a brief look at the register, but didn't recognize any HAZ names - it seems like the area sees plenty of visitation and I had once again lucked out with my early start to have the area to enjoy in solitude.

After looking around for a bit, I headed back out to join the main trail, passing several people headed towards the roost on my way back towards Fremont Saddle, including a couple of folk who looked like they might be toting canyoning gear. Seems my timing was near perfect for my two planned detours for the day! As I was hiking back to rejoin the Peralta Trail, it was pretty clear that traffic had picked up as I could hear a steady stream of chatter floating up from the main path, and there were loads more visitors at the actual saddle. The climbers from before had finally packed up and started down canyon towards Weavers Needle just a few moments before I rejoined the main trail to follow in their footsteps with their chatter and hardware jangling for a soundtrack. When it became clear that I wasn't moving fast enough to lap them and stay far enough ahead, I stopped to let them gain some separation.

I was glad to be able to regain some semblance of solitude as I hiked onward - while I didn't catch anyone else headed in the same direction as I was, I think I passed just over a dozen folk headed in the opposite direction in various places along the loop, about 2/3rds of which were backpackers - 2 of the backpackers were on their way out and mentioned that they were from BC and had spent the previous day holed up at Charlebois with the thunderstorms, hail, and rain passing over. They were in good spirits, so I thanked them for bringing the rain to the desert 😆.

The loop itself has a very small section that looks like it was affected by the siphon fire (near the northern terminus of the peralta trail) - with all the moisture in the air, it smelled strongly of stale campfire when walking through the burn region. Otherwise, the flora all along the route seemed healthy with the mosses and resurrection plants recently rehydrated.

Views along the loop didn't disappoint with Weavers Needle featuring heavily. The disadvantage to doing the loop clockwise as I did (to give myself the best opportunity to having some solitude at Lone Tree and Robber's Roost) meant that I was climbing up Terrapin at the end of my day - I was warned that it was steep and loose....and sure enough, it was - though the footing wasn't too awful. I can never decide if I prefer going up or down Cardiac Hill - at the end of a long day, I was definitely taking my time with the big step downs. By the time I returned to the trailhead, many of the cars had cleared out, though I did spot a few people headed up Peralta when I was able to peer into the canyon from above.

It was a great day to be out, especially with the water pooling and flowing from the recent rains. Not sure how long it will all last, but it was such a nice change! I'm not sure which stats are right, HAZ disagrees with what my watch computed...one has more mileage, and the other has more AEG, either way, it was a fantastic all day affair.

Oh no. I thought I had posted a triplog for this hike already, but I must have forgotten to hit save. I'll try to remember what I wrote the first time around.

Continuing the annual tradition of hiking around Weaver's Needle for a fourth year. It was cold in the morning at the start, especially when the wind was blowing. The fleece hoodie wasn't keeping me warm, but as soon as we started going uphill I was plenty warm. Took the loop counterclockwise again like last time. The start on Bluff Springs Trail is a bitch. The giant stair steps kill my knees. But it's easier to do it going up when the legs are fresh than down when the legs are tired. Terrapin Trail was overgrown in places and a machete or hedge trimmer would have come in handy. But it was passable. It warmed up nicely when we got to Terrapin and I shed the hoodie and traded the knit cap for the wide brim hat. At the north end of the loop shed the long sleeve shirt for the rest of the hike. It was perfect hiking weather.

Very pleasant hiking without running into other people. Saw very few people on most of the trail until we got to Peralta Pass where it was very crowded. Passed by burned area on Peralta trail where I guess there was a fire last year. Always sad to see. But it was a fairly limited area at least it seemed that way from the trail. Also this is the driest I've seen this trail. No water at all in most of the streams, and even in Barks Canyon the rocks were only a little wet in places. Didn't see any critters despite the trail being empty. Of course this trail is so rocky that it's hard to look anywhere but down without tripping and slipping, so there might have been all kinds of animals that I never saw.

All in all a great day of hiking.

Another trip around the needle.

I met up with Jason at his house in Gold Canyon and we arrived at Peralta TH a little before 7am. There were already quite a few cars in the lot. We opted for a CCW loop and started up cardiac hill.

Bluff Springs Trail is in good shape. Steep as always at the start. The grass was pretty high along Barks Canyon area. We made to the Terrapin/Bluff Springs junction just as the sun was starting to kiss the ridges.

Terrapin is in pretty good shape. The typical catclaw before the saddle was there, but I’ve seen it in worse shape. The hike up to the saddle is an up and down activity, but the hike down to the Dutchman is the reason we did this CCW. That’s a steep section best done with gravity as your friend.

We made it to the Peralta/Dutchman junction and took a little break before the long trudge up to the Fremont Saddle. The 1 mile section between Terrapin and Peralta was one of the few sections in the Western Supes Jason hasn’t hiked. So, he crossed that off.

The hike up Peralta was the same non-stop up and up. The Siphon fire made it to parts of the lower Peralta Trail. You could see the ugly brown scars starting from the ridgeline going down. It was the usual “mosaic” burn pattern. Some places roasted beyond life, right next to green trees and live cacti. As we got close to the needle, the fire damage subsided. But, it did come back as we got near Piper Springs. It didn’t seem to cross the trail at any point. Once we made it to the Pinon Camp area, all signs of the fire stopped.

Jason hiked down to check out Piper Springs. He saw a trickle flowing. That was literally the only water on this entire loop. Areas that usually had some water were all bone-dry. I cannot recall seeing this place so dry in December, ever.

We made it to the Fremont saddle and saw 3-4 groups. Some out at the Lone Pine and some at the saddle. We came across some others going up and down from the saddle. I am wondering where all of the people that were parked at the TH were hiding as we saw nobody along the loop except for 1 solo hiker near the Peralta/Dutchman junction doing the same loop clockwise.

Always a treat to hit this one as the needle looks like a different formation from each side. The elevation is also broken up nicely which makes the +2800 ft aeg seem more manageable. I hope we get some rains soon. It is TOO dry out there.

Back on my quest to finish hiking every official trail in the Superstitions, Andy and I headed out to Peralta TH Sunday morning for a nice loop. We decided to do the loop CCW with Bluff Spring>Terrapin>Dutchman>Peralta trails. The climb up Cardiac Hill at the start always sucks but with the sun not up yet it wasn't as bad. As we got to Terrapin and started the climb up, the sun came up above the cliffs. Up and down the roller coaster on Terrapin until you get to Terrapin Pass then it's a steep slippery walk down to the Dutchman (I felt like I was ice skating a couple of times on the way down) :scared:. The Dutchman from Terrapin to Peralta was the section I was missing and was a pretty easy gradual climb over upper Upper Black Top Mesa Pass. We took a break in the shade once we got to the Peralta Trail and started the long climb up. This section to Fremont Saddle completely dragged as it was a pretty warm continuous climb up. Checked out the Siphon Fire burn area, as normal the fire destroyed some sections and missed others. There were some sections where the fire made it below the trail but for the most part, it stayed higher up. Made a stop at the old Piper camp and I bushwhacked and rock-hopped down to the spring area while Andy watched from his Lazy Boy. Finally made it to Fremont Saddle, which to my surprise was not nearly as busy as I expected. Even though the hike from the Saddle to the TH was all downhill it dragged as we were both pretty warm and tired at this point. Saw one hiker on Peralta near the Dutchman junction, then up on the Saddle were the shirtless guys and yoga pants girls taking selfies as usual. In the home stretch now with only a couple of miles of trails left. Thanks Andy for joining.

With the standard wave of pseudo backpackers, powered by corporate apps empowering give-me, I had a 20+ mi loop to report on two lesser reported and one of the never-shared water sources. Then figured it was best to ease back into bigger hikes.

The road all the way to the Overflow / Horse Trailer / Bus lot is super smooth now.

Elected to go against the grain and do this hike clockwise as we always hit it CCW. The hike up to Fremont Saddle was better than anticipated, it usually seems to drag as the end of the hike heading down.

The only hiker we passed all day was on the flip side past Fremont. A female backpacker in flip-flops. She said it was warmer last night than the night before, after Bruce asked. Later saw two hikers in the distance and that was it all day.

Anticipated the Siphon burn heading down. Finally entered one pocket. Albeit burned, seemed kinna trivial surrounded by world-class geology that entertains the eye more than chaparral.

Piper was the only spring on the day to check out. The lid is jammed unless you're stronger or you BYO crowbar. It's still at least 3 to 4 ft deep as it has been for eons. Satisfied, but give-me without contributing back for the next guy idiots still bring out the second half of the fourth verse in Get in the Ring... Lol

7.20mi - 10:53am | 3h 36m
Bruce mentioned earlier(cried like a 2-year-old), and at this point, I'd have to agree with him... it's a touch warm for December 19th. Hopefully, Linda is safe from the wrath of the sun.

Dead grass along most of the hike but it is especially thick heading up Terrapin. If not throughout to Bluff Spring Trail.

Synopsis
Great little loop without the drive. Still didn't care for the last mile and a half but the morning hike up to Fremont was a total winner.

Siphon Fire results on this hike were minimal. Hikes originating at First Water TH have never been high on my list. It'll green up in 2 years, then another inevitable grass fire will torch the lunatic fringe.

The parking lot was a fourth full when we finished but we didn't see the people. Wave Cave シ was packing 'em in.

water report recorded in the field on our app Route Scout Still 3 feet deep or more. Plenty of water for a large group. The metal lid is jammed so you only see a tiny amount. The stick test confirmed the same deep results as always.

40s and windy to start the day. Temperatures rose to the low 80s, and the wind mostly died down as the day went on.

Joe planned a clockwise loop around Weavers Needle using Peralta → Dutchman → Terrapin → Bluff Springs.

Peralta Trail #102
The trail was in mostly good condition, typical of the Superstitions. This was the only trail of the day that showed evidence of burn from the Siphon Fire. The burn was minimal, and if we get any winter or spring rains, it will likely be mostly covered up. We spent some time checking out Piper Spring. There's plenty of water there, but it takes some effort to remove the two lids and collect it.

We passed one female backpacker heading out after spending a few nights in the wilderness.

Dutchman Trail #104
We were on the Dutchman Trail for a bit before making our way to the Terrapin Trail. No evidence of fire damage anywhere along this section.

Terrapin Trail #234
We climbed up the Terrapin Trail a bit, looking for shade, and stopped for lunch. While eating, we spotted a couple of backpackers below on the Dutchman. After lunch, we continued the climb, gaining two saddles five or six times. This was the warmest part of the day. Once again, no fire scars were visible.

Bluff Springs Trail #235
The section of Terrapin leading up to this trail can be thin at times. By this point, we were on the home stretch. We passed our last hiker of the day as he completed Cardiac Hill.

It felt great to get back out to the Superstitions. From what we saw today, the minimal fire scars wouldn't deter us from hiking in this area again.

Hard to find the actual water. Located under a 2'x 2' sheet of metal and then under another cover. The pool there is at least 2' deep.

It's been a decade since I tackled this loop, which circumnavigates the crown jewel of the Superstition. It is truly striking to see the many faces of Weavers Needle, which when viewed separately, don't look like the same peak at all.

It is high traffic season at Peralta, and we found ourselves in a conga line of 10 cars heading to the trailhead on a Saturday morning. We arrived just before 7:30 am, and the first lot was already 85 percent full.

Thankfully, we immediately headed off on the Bluff Springs trail, and left the crowds behind. We only encountered three other hikers before the junction with the Dutchman trail on the far end of the loop.

Bluff Springs was clear sailing and well defined. The Peralta rock is very hard to see (without dousing it with water). Terrapin was less overgrown than it was on my last visit, though I still recommend long pants.

Turning the corner on the western side of the loop, the fire damage becomes visible, and crosses the trail for a brief (1/4-1/2 mile) section on the NW corner, with the fire scar remaining visible to the west of the trail for much of the western traverse. In sections, the small trail clearly provided enough of a fire break to prevent the flames from jumping across.

In this section, we passed a group of 10 college students on a 4-night backpacking trip from New Hampshire. They were all effusive about the beauty of the Supes.

By the time we arrived at Fremont Saddle, there were several folks enjoying the view, but not the crowds from the a.m.

The upper portion of the trail down the canyon is also a real visual gem here.

Got back to the car in mid afternoon, and decided to do a driving tour of the new Peralta Regional Park on our way out. It's pretty good sized, with picnic and camping areas pretty spread out. Initial critiques are that: (a) while the picnic sites have nice shade covers, the camping spots don't and they look pretty barren/uninviting; (b) spreading things out is nice, but in some instances it would make for a very long walk to the nearest bathroom. Overall, the place did not seem to be getting much visitation--even though this would presumably be prime season.

Beautifully temperate day in the Supes for late April. With temps in the 70s the sun was nonetheless beating down on us. I came prepared with a Italian hero from Tony's Deli at 7th St. and Dunlap. I highly recommended ordering one with "The Works". It will provide the necessary fuel for this trek. I have this idea for recreating the Japanese woodblocks of Mt. Fuji by Hokusai as the 32 views of Weavers Needle. This trail provides at least 3 epic views of this volcanic spire. I can now see from the Terrapin trail how one might climb Weavers, not that I'm planning a trip...yet. There was still enough water for drinking out there, but it is drying up. Lots of lizards everywhere and of course, us bipeds.

Wanted to test the knee out more. Have not done this loop in a very long time. I went ccw this time. Majestic views all day and nearly perfect weather made for a truly ideal day. Being able to come up here on a weekday makes everything that much better.

My second time doing this loop. First time was two years ago and we hiked clockwise. This time we decided to hike counterclockwise. I met at hiking buddy's house and he drove to trailhead. On the way there I realized I left my phone in my car! Oh no! I don't remember the last time I was separated from my phone for that long. First time in ages hiking without Route Scout! I would be depending on my pixel watch to record the route this time - luckily its battery held out for the full hike! But I really missed having Route Scout announce my progress every mile.

It was a chilly morning, but I knew that starting on the steep Bluff Springs Trail #235 that I would warm up quickly, and I did. It wasn't long before I started feeling my legs getting tired on those big steps that seemed to go on and on. But going counterclockwise around the loop that was the only steep uphill that we would have to deal with. The trail was fairly deserted. We saw only three other hikers before we got to the halfway point. The first pair of hikers after that were going around the loop clockwise and they said that we were the first people they had seen on the trail all day. On the Peralta Trail to the Saddle we saw more people, and the final leg from the Saddle down to the trailhead was packed with people and dogs.

There was barely a trickle of water in the creek Barks Canyon, and some of the little pools had ice crystals. Didn't see any water for the rest of the trail, but the dirt was moist in lots of places.

The counterclockwise loop had us getting to Fremont Saddle in the afternoon instead of in the morning which gave good sunlight on Weaver's Needle which was a nice benefit. That and getting the hardest climb out of the way early made this a great day in the beautiful Superstition Wilderness.

Weekly trail patrol with fellow volunteer Dave, though it's been almost three weeks since we last hiked.

0830ish start. We hiked the loop in the CCW direction. The recent rain has helped, though we could use another round or three before the creeks start filling up. That said, we found some decent pools through most of the hike.

Bluff Springs Trail has been recently trimmed up to the Cave Trail junction. It's a little brushy as you approach Barks Canyon (nothing prickly), but in good shape all the way to Terrapin.

Terrapin is in good shape overall. There are a few loose, rocky spots where you might need to tread carefully. Occasional catclaw will grab you if you're not paying attention. Otherwise, it was smooth sailing all the way to Dutchman. Surprisingly, we noted several nice pools along the way, something rarely seen on this trail (last winter/spring notwithstanding). If you're looking to camp on Terrapin, there is a nice spot near the creek about a quarter mile south of Dutchman. You can filter along the way or draw from the creek.

The short crossover on Dutchman is in decent shape. Not too brushy and nothing prickly. We stopped for lunch at the high point half way across. I saw a faint trail heading up the hill south of us. I found a nice camp site there with a fire ring and stellar views all around. It looked like the trail continued west before bending around east north of Weaver's Needle. I wonder where that goes. I'll have to check that out sometime.

We continued north on Dutchman past the junction with Peralta about 150 yards to check on water near the Weaver's View, or lunch rock as I like to call it. There are several deep pools there to filter water.

The Peralta Trail is in good shape all the way back to the TH. Most of the elevation gain on this loop is along this stretch, but there are also some great views to be had if you stop and take a look around every now and then. We needed to, of course :) . There is no water in the creek at the camp site just north of Weaver's Needle. There are several nice pools at the Pinon Camp farther up the trail. Not the most scenic place to camp after the fire (the Pinon Pines were all crisped and the area is covered with the ugly grass now prevalent), but there are nice camp sites and plenty of water.

We stopped for our last break at Fremont Saddle before heading down. The constant chatter we had throughout the hike turned to strict focus on the descent, lest we trip and fall. Never a good way to end a hike.

Long, enjoyable hike. The weather was perfect for it. Warmer than we thought at the start, no warmer than high 50's all day and sunny throughout the hike.

Several nice pools in Barks Canyon where the trail crosses the creek. A few more in the slick rock canyon past the junction with Upper Barks trail. More than enough to filter if you're heading out this weekend and want to lighten your water load going up Cardiac Hill.

Nothing near the camp site. We noted a couple of nice pools far down the steep ravine south of the camp site, but it would be difficult to get down and back out.

Been struggling with adversity but have put up a stronger AEG with each outing so far through 2023. Joined a large Meetup group that hiked to the saddle. Then continued much further with one person.

Had never seen the needle close up like this before. Was very interesting to listen to backpacker's stories. This outing took all day. There is some route finding involved. My cohort has been with me on many of these recent outings. She started struggling some toward the end. Best be ready if you are going to attempt this one.

linda suggested we do another hike in the supes today
we had talked about weaver's needle loop, but decided to modify the route a bit
got to peralta around 0800, just as it quit raining
we started with all of peralta trail, then dutchman and part of terrapin
i had never been on weaver's crosscut, so cut west from terrapin
thought this entire area was very scenic
the east end is very well defined and clear
the west is a little harder to follow and more overgrown with some catclaw
great views up close of weaver's needle and other cool rock formations
back up to fremont saddle on peralta, then we took the cave trail to finish
i hadn't been on most of these trails in five years so it was nice to hike them again
there was water flowing in every drainage and sometimes on the trails
a few challenging creek crossings
we saw a couple of waterfalls in peralta canyon
weather was perfect: cool temps, very little breeze
we saw maybe a half dozen people all day except for right at fremont saddle
good mileage and elevation gain on the loop
thanks linda, really enjoyed this one :)

Kelly and I got started at 0800 just as the rain and low clouds were clearing out—perfect timing. Headed up Peralta, carefully picking our way over the wet rocks. Saw where one good sized boulder recently rolled onto the trail at about 1.75 miles. Lots of running water covering the trail on the north side of Fremont Saddle.

Headed east on Dutchman, enjoying the sights of the healthy saguaros on the slopes of Black Top Mesa. Again, more water.

Headed south up Terrapin. There were a couple of tricky creek crossings, and I took my shoes off for one to walk directly across since it seemed easier than trying to dodge catclaw. Steep climb in a few places, and some loose rock, but most of the vegetation has been recently cleared from the edges of the trail.

As we reached the turn for the Crosscut, dark clouds had suddenly formed. Rain seemed possible, but held off, although the clouds were dramatic. The Crosscut was fun, and generally easy to follow until the far western end. Just enough catclaw to where I was glad I wore pants rather than shorts.

Once heading back south on Peralta, we chatted with a few hikers who weren’t quite sure of where they were going. At Fremont Saddle, we headed over to Cave Trail. Wet rocks in several places added to the fun. Quick stop at the cave, then a careful descent through the steepest spots. After that, it was mostly smooth sailing down to Bluff Springs Trail, which we took back to the trailhead.

Great day, and great views for the entire hike. Thanks for putting this loop together, Kelly.

We hiked down Peralta trail and exited near Piper camp. After a few hours cleaning up around the spring, we hiked off trail down the side canyon then up over a ridge to Terrapin trail. The traverse on the off trail was tricky but the ridge walking much better. Peralta trail is easy to follow, Terrapin trail was ok on the north half but almost disappears on the way to Bluff Spring trail. The temps were nice in the morning, warm by midday then nice again after 3 pm.

Most of loop was in good condition and easy to follow. For about 0.5 miles near the middle of terrapin trail there were a few sections of very minor overgrowth, and the route finding was slightly harder. The rest of the trail very little to no overgrowth, nothing worse than a few few single catclaw here and there.
