Second hike of my Daily Double. After finishing the Talon trail, I drove a mile up the road to the Hawes Trail System. I feel like I have done 3-4 hikes in this system over the years, but I don’t have anything marked off for this trail system. So, as far as HAZ is concerned, this will be my first for this area.

I parked at the Bulldog Canyon Gate and was surprised to find 12 vehicles already there. I was thinking on a Friday morning I might have this area more to myself. Not the case. Crossing the road and going through the fence brought to the Lance trail. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was happy to discover that the trails are signed at the junctions. The Lance trail wanders to the north and climbs a little before juncturing with other trails. At about .5 miles there is an unmarked split in the trail. HAZ’s MAPDEX seems to indicate that the trails that turns off to the north is a continuation of the Lance trail. I did not follow this path, so I will have to find out on another visit. I continued west for another .1 miles (about .6 miles from the TH) before reaching a signed juncture. The post indicated that High Ridge took off to the left (south) and since that was my main objective….left I went. The trail starts off by dropping down and crossing a major wash before starting a steady climb along a ridge and then switchbacking up the slope of the mountain. The climb is fairly steep in spots and there are several blind spots for hikers and bikers to be aware of. This would not be a good trail to have headphones playing. Where the trail climbs, the trail is not in the best of shape. It is an obvious single track, so you will not get loss. But it is badly rutted and the top surface of the trail is composed of grus - small, rock like pebbles that make the trail slick. However, once you reach the upper, flatter section the trail is much nicer. Still composed of grus, but it is not as noticeable because there is a lesser chance of downhill skiing :) The trail offer some fantastic views to the north and a little to the east, as well as a brief peak to the south. It’s amazing how going from the Talon trail (Usery) to the High Ridge causes the views to change so dramatically. Holding its elevation, the High Ridge trail wraps around to the north before ending at the Alp ‘dHuez trail. I took the Alp d’Huez down to reconnect with the Lance trail which I then took back to the car. Nice trail to get familiar with the Hawes system.

Side notes: Though the trail intersections seem to be well signed, it would be nice if the trails had periodic markers along the trail verifying what trail you are currently on. My impression is that trails name change from one intersection to the next and it would be very easy to have trail names change without realizing it. I imagine that trail familiarity would minimize this concern. It would also be nice if there were trail maps at the TH. I’ve only been to one TH so this might change depending on the TH. Luckily I have HAZ and MAPDEX to prepare going in. Definitely a bikers trail system. Encountered 23 bikers and 1 trail runner. All encounters were copacetic. Wildlife minimal….a few lizards and a chipmunk.

We decided to do a short night hike and figured this would be a good one since this trail system is extensively utilized by bikers. Arrived about 1:30am. Need to start paying particular attention to the trail now that it's warming up; don't want to step on any rattlesnakes! It seems it was cool enough that there were none out this early in the morning.

Hike was quite nice, got some nice views a and took a couple of pictures. Finished up at about 3:30am and got home in time to start the day!

I decided to start the year off by bagging a couple of peaks, so I did these 2:
1) Lone Mountain/EJ Peak
2) Usery Mountains Highpoint/Peak 2972

I began by hiking up to Lone Mtn/EJ, and then when I got back to the parking lot I crossed the road and hiked to the Usery HP.

Lone Mountain/EJ Peak
This was a nice little hike -- short, scenic, and steep. There were a few people out on the hike, but not very many. The parking lot was full, so I was afraid that the trail would be crowded; but appears most people were mountain biking instead of hiking.

There were nice views of the Mazzies, Goldfields, and Supes -- I enjoyed this hike.

Usery Highpoint
I followed one of the tracks that @adilling posted, and it turned out to be a good and very efficient route. I figured that I would be doing some bushwhacking, but that was not the case. I started out in a wash, then went on a trail that was mostly used by mountain bikers, and then went on a use trail the rest of the way. The wash was a bit sandy, but not too bad. The mountain bike trail was nice to hike on, although there must have been 50 mountain bikers along the way (note to self: next time, go during the week instead of a weekend, especially a holiday weekend). The use trail was easy to follow, although it was steep and slippery in a couple of places. On the way down I maintained 5 points of contact in one stretch.

Synopsis
I enjoyed this hike -- it was a clear day and the views were nice. It was a bit windy on top of Usery, but other than that it was really nice hiking weather: sunny with temperatures in the low 50's.

I was planning on hitting "Old Faithful", Lone Mountain/EJ Peak, but with the hazy conditions, I opted to go across the street and get in a little exploring along the mountain bike trails starting at the NRA Pit T/H. I have hiked in here in the past, but I never remember the names. I think the mountain bikers have different names for these trails.

I started up the Wild Horse Trail, but I took another trail to the left moving parallel. It's shows as "High Noon" in the Hawes Trail System map on their website. I took that to a wash, hiked down that a little and I think I ended up on "Red Mountain Rampage" before I took the wash back to the Wild Horse Trail.

I saw a few mountain bikers out, but that was it. The clouds kept the temps down, but this humidity lately, it's like hiking in New Orleans. Oh well, take the good with the bad. The hillsides, like everywhere else out there now were as green as I have ever seen them. Most of the green was from grass and from this odd weed that spread out between the bushes and cacti. Still some things blooming. I saw some barrel cacti with blooms, a few cholla and a daisy every once in a while. I did see some wild squash (I think) as well. That's something you don't see every day out there. Crazy rains this year.

I made a little lasso loop, got in my exercise and miles and caught a very subtle, hazy sunset. I like this area, it's full of surprises.

Just had to get out and do a little late afternoon hike. Been a while since I was last here. Things have greened up nicely and the saguaros look less deflated. Heard the report of a pistol up the valley as I started out. Toward the top I found the source: some one had shot a rattler in the head and left it on the trail for all to see. I pushed it off to the side. What's wrong with people? Mother Nature saw my distress and, just up the trail, gave me a nice tortoise encounter. He or she was nom-nomming a leafy green plant.

Took the family back to this area again for another quick Sunday morning hike taking advantage of the cooler weather. Decided to check out the High Ridge Trail this time. Last week with the rain, there wasn't a whole lot of traffic on the trails. This week with clear skies and dry ground it was a different story.

We started from the same TH as last week, heading up Alpe d'Huez. At the junction of the High Ridge Trail, I decided to take that trail up hill, making a clockwise loop. Once we got about a quarter mile in, one biker who was headed up the Alpe d'Huez was yelling over at us warning us that bikers would be coming down this trail very fast. I expected and knew this, as there is a sign at the junction advising caution. Then he went so far to tell us that we were hiking in the wrong direction, which I took exception with, declining to respond from a distance. The sign at the junction does recommend to bike only downhill on High Ridge, which makes perfect sense. The trail is so steep and loose in sections that biking up is pretty much impossible. and getting off the trail with a bike quickly while other bikers are screaming downhill is also not going to happen. For hikers, though, it's a different story. Not only can we get off the trail quickly, but by hiking uphill, we can see the bikers coming and have enough time to get off the trail. Hiking downhill on this trail makes getting off the trail in time less likely. I kept an eye out and, in fact, we did have some bikers coming downhill. I was able to spot them in time and told my family to clear the trail and wait, which they were more than happy to do, taking the opportunity for a breather on this trail. No one said anything to us as they passed, other than to thank us for yielding.

Once we got past the switchback section of High Ridge, which poses the greatest risk for traffic conflict, we made our way along the more level section of the trail over to Alpe d'Huez. At the junction there, we decided to once again hike down Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar rather than down Alpe d'Huez again. the views weren't as dramatic as a week ago, but it was still very nice clear blue skies and snow capped mountains in the distance.

Got back to a very packed trailhead and cars parked along Usery Road. this area looks like it's used a lot more by bikers than hikers, but it is still shared used, with several ATVers mixed in at the TH heading over on FR3554. The new trails are currently being built by the Hawes Trail Alliance, which is a group of hikers, bikers and trail runners who have got an approved master plan and an organized group of volunteers who are doing a great job building the trails. i checked out their Facebook page and saw a few more trails on the master plan that have been built. Looks like more local exploring to do in the coming Sundays until the heat lurches in for the summer.

I saw @adenium 's track posted over a week ago and it looked like a great hike to take the family out on. Close by, not too short, and enough AEG for a good workout. The weather forecasters were promising for realsies this time that we would get rain. I awoke at 5am to dry ground outside and by 5:30, started to get up and get things ready. By just after 7am, the rain started to come down at our house, but only lasted a few minutes. I was able to convince them to go thru with the hike before the next wave of rain hit.

We started from the Lone Mt. TH off of Usery Road and headed up the Alp D'Huez trail. It's been rerouted in spots to eliminate the overly steep and loose sections. A crew of trail builders passed us on the way up with their equipment. I think they said they were going to work on the High Ridge Trail, which according to the signs we saw looks like it's been recently opened.

At the start, the clouds were low over the mountains and it looked like it might rain. It did start to rain a little bit, at which point Radmila made the kids put on their ponchos. After we climbed up another mile and a half and 500+ feet in no rain, they took them off.

As we got to the Iron Goat Trail, the sun hit us, lighting up the area around us, and giving some greats views of the clouds rolling by nearby and up north. All the clouds we saw in this area when we started were gone. We got a glimpse over towards Four Peaks and saw some snow on the ridgelines over there. Saw a rainbow down north of the Salt River for a little bit.

As we descended on the Iron Goat Trail, the rain really did hit for a little while, but it wasn't too bad. We made it up to the one peak, and then made our way further down on the Cactus Nectar Trail. By the time we got to the bottom, the sun was out again. the clouds at the top returned now that we were back down.

Fantastic hike with some really amazing scenery from the crazy weather. Nice to hike new trails close to home and be done before lunch. On the ride home southbound on Usery Road a downpour hit us. Looks like timed everything perfectly.

Another day of exploration on the Hawes trail system. Hit up some of the newly opened mountain biking trails, including Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar. Really impressed with some of the trail work. Shared the trail with a whole family of javelina. There was about a dozen of them.

After hiking the High Ridge/Alp D' Huez loop clockwise a few days ago it sounded like something Tracey wanted to check out when she had her next day off. So that's what we did.

For something different (for me anyway) we hiked it in the 'preferred' (by bikers) CCW direction. Although it wasn't near as busy as last Friday, there was still just enough bike traffic we stayed alert to approaching bikers. And just as I did the other day, we encountered at least one which I knew was an e-bike, and one other I wasn't positive so didn't say anything to him.

However, the second time we were passed by the e-biker who I DID mention it was not legal on Hawes Trails, he stopped to 'clue me in on e-bikes' and went on to say his E-bike is a Class 1, so he CAN ride on these trails. I wasn't going to spoil the day for either of us so I just let it go and told him to have a nice ride.

E-BIKE FYI: At present the Forest Service does NOT authorize ANY motorized vehicles of any kind on ANY trails in the Hawes Trail System. And yes, E-bikes and pedal-assist bikes are considered 'motorized vehicles' by the FS.

Anyway, we continued on our way down the High Ridge Trail, meeting two solo hikers on their ascent and being passed by a dozen bikers on their descent. Once back to the intersection at the 'bottom' of the High Ridge Trail, we saw work had already started on the new "Cactus Nectar Trail" and decided to see how far it was already done. About a half-mile out, we came across the 'trail closed, under construction" sign and not a hundred yards farther the CAT mini-excavator was in action. I climbed up the slope a bot for a better view, took a few photos and filmed a short video of the CAT in full swing.

After that we did a bit of off-trail ups-and-downs before hitting the Wild Horse Trail back to the car.

Interesting side note... on the "Hawes Trail System Master Development Plan Approved Map 10/20/2020" half of the loop is labeled Alp D' Huez, named after the regular Tour De France ascent ending at an Alpine ski village. However... everything must be Americanized rather stick with the spirit of the original: Alpe d'Huez /rant over

Returned to grab some pics. I am kicking myself for not getting pictures two days prior. I didn't think I was going to post this hike up to Hike Arizona, so I didn't bother. Too bad because there were lovely clouds over the Goldfields I was on the ridge later than today, so I was seeing the Goldfields at the Golden Hour. Oh well, today was nice too.

I did part of this trail last week and had to abort about halfway because it wasn't finished. I decided to revisit the trail today and see if progress had been made. I am happy to report that the trail is open and makes a nice loop. Lots of mountain bikes were out on the trail, giving it a breaking in, and I only saw two other hikers. The section that's new to me is pretty darn steep - counterclockwise would be the reasonable way to walk this trail unless you need to get your cardio fix in for the day.

Checked out the new High Ridge Trail and the rerouted Alp D' Huez Trail along with a bunch of off-trail wandering.

The trail is recommended to be ridden downhill (CCW if you do the full loop) so I hiked it uphill, which is what I would recommend for other hikers as this trail gets more use. I feel it's better to see the bikers coming from a distance and thus be out of their way ahead of their arrival. Good thing I did as the trail was BUSY! I encountered too many bikers to count, and almost a dozen more than once due to them riding more than one lap.
The one biker who I met four times who he was riding an e-bike... go figure. In fact the last time we met I said he was doing it the lazy way, which he happily confirmed.
It didn't happen to register with me until after the hike that e-bikes and/or pedal-assist bikes are NOT authorized on any trails in the Hawes Trail System.
(Of course as you can see by the last photo, at the moment there are no metal posts or signs officially designating anything)
I took far too many photos so I only posted those from the High Ridge Trail, not the re-routed Alp D'Huez Trail.
