Morning hike with the wife after R2R. We parked near Pipe Creek and then hiked over and past Yaki Point. There was a paved path to Kaibab and then a solid use trail that went along the edge to Yaki. It was my first time visiting Yaki. Kind of the forgotten step child along the southern rim. Not sure why the rim trail doesn’t officially extend to it. Continued past Yaki for a short ways and connected to the Shoshone mule trail that goes along the rim. We didn’t go far on this trail, but we could see Shoshone vista off in the distance. We returned back to Yaki Point and then took the shuttle back to the car. Nice morning hike with the wife and a nice way to loosen the legs after the Canyon.

The Rim is hilly! Who knew? I started by Bright Angel Bikes, rode the paths to the Hermit Road, and then out the road to Monument Point, after which it's okay to ride on the rim path. Then to the Hermit trailhead. I stopped a lot along the way, chatted with other cyclists and walkers, and looked at the views. The other folks were from places such as Italy, New Zealand, and Oklahoma.

Then I rode back to near the Visitor Center, but instead of going to my car, I figured I'd check out the trail in the other direction. So, I rode to the South Kaibab Trailhead near Yaki Point. This route was a bit too busy with tourists in places. Glad I went on a weekday.

It was my first visit to the S. Rim since October 2019, when I hiked down the Bright Angel Trail to meet a private river trip. I've been on another river trip since then, and I drive down Diamond Creek Road for my job about 3X a week, all summer, but somehow, I don't seem to get myself to the Rim. It was about time, and it encouraged me to think about backpacking the Canyon again. I'll have to actually start hiking again...

Techie info: The bike is a Salsa Journeyman flatbar Sora 700, size XS. It's supposed to be a gravel touring bike. The newer models have dropped the "sexist" name, and they are now called the Journeyer. I have some buyer's regret, for a lot of reasons, but it's still a pretty nice ride. I've had it for a couple of years. It didn't come with a granny low, and I had the gearing completely changed. What they were able to install still does not have a very low granny gear. I've been on a couple of short tours with it. On dirt, I'd prefer my mountain bike and BOB trailer. For pavement touring, I'm looking at getting a traditional touring bike, maybe next year. No, not a Surly. A Kona Sutra, or a Fuji.

Counter-clockwise loop on a cool, breezy day. The new shade ramada at the S Kaibab Tipoff is very nice, the two 125-gallon rain collector barrels were about half full, water level just above the spigot height (not sure why they didn't put the spigots lower).

Side trip up the Battleship - what a fun, improbable route to the summit! Hard to say which battleship is better, GC or the Supes.

Bike shuttle along the Rim Trail between trailheads.

SOBO with a bike shuttle between trailheads. The trail goes through the active Reed Prescribed Fire project several miles east of Tusayan near Upper Ten X tank, but there were no closures, visible fire or smoke, just a few smoldering stumps. Didn't see any water anywhere (except at the SK trailhead where the elk were giving the water station a good tongue cleaning).

The section between the SK trailhead and Tusayan is probably the least enjoyable stretch of the AZT I've done so far - highway traffic noise, helicopters overhead, several miles of pavement walking on the Greenway. Routing a new trail a couple miles to the east on a more direct line to the SK trailhead would be a big improvement, but I imagine the NPS isn't very receptive to the idea of building new trails inside the park.

Nice loop down BA and up SK, I'd forgotten how nice the lower section of BA is. Packed snow on the upper part of BA, SK was clear. Somebody needs to write a "Rim Trail - Pipe Creek Overlook to South Kaibab trail head" description (edit: done).

One of those extra cool days in the GC, after a big winter storm blows through. Down SK, west on Tonto, side trip out to PP, up BA, Rim Trail to connect the trailheads (a very nice alternative to the shuttle bus).
