Getting past the dry waterfalls is a little spicy. Great views up at 2881 and Horns of Dilemma.
Lots of bright yellow flowers on the brittlebush . Also saw a Desert Nightsnake on the path.

After last week’s adventures in the Goldfields, Chris worked up a loop adjacent to the Apache Gap area we did last Sunday. I have been to Bagley Tank many years ago, but never along the horse trails Chris had mapped out.

We started in the dark and headed off. I never knew this secondary trail started right from the TH. I always took the road down to the wash and started out from there. This track kept us off the wash and along the little ridge near the trailhead. Very distinct paths with lots of horseshoe tracks (and horse droppings too).

The path took us down into a wash below 2881. This area was so lush, like a jungle. All the rains these past months really made stuff grow out there. We eventually started climbing up towards the saddle north of 2881 and got on the trail that is part of the Consensus Hike for 2881/Horns/Willow. This area on the ridgeline is really scenic. You get views of the Superstition Mountain, Weavers Needle, the western Supes, Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake and beyond. Rather than hang a right and start up (and then down) towards the Horns, we kept going along the ridge.

The trail dropped down towards Bagley Tank and was pretty steep. We arrived in the green and grassy tank area and got on the FS12 for the rest of the hike back. There was a good amount of water in the tank this time around.

The balance of the hike was along FS12 and in Willow Creek Wash. Still highly scenic as the Goldfields in all their glory were showing off all the way back. We arrived back at a packed trailhead. The word is out for the Goldfields, but there's still so many little trails like this loop to explore.

A morning well spent. Thanks for the invite Chris.

Andy invited me for this one, which he had done 4 years earlier. I knew it was mostly off trail, but he said there was a faint trail along the ridgeline, and the wash hiking wash typical wash hiking.

We did the loop clockwise, making the climb up to 2881 in the dark, first along the jeep road. Once we were up on the ridgeline up to 2881, it got light enough to turn off the headlamps, which was well enough since my batteries were dying and the light I was getting was kind of faint.

It wasn't that hard to hike up to 2881, but it was slow going, as I expected. I had an errand to run in the afternoon, so the slow pace was more of a concern for me. We made it up to 2881 ok, and then headed down the ridgeline on the north side. That ridgeline was rough to walk down because there wasn't even a faint trail, there was quite a lot of loose rocks to negotiate, and the vegetation had grown from recent rains. Between that and the warmer weather and humidity, this didn't seem at all like a winter hike in AZ.

Once we got to the saddle of the ridgeline, there was a well defined horse trail that went up the next ascent, and another that went up an over the saddle, now into the valleys on either side. We decided to bail on the rest of the loop and follow the horse trail that seemed to lead back down to Willow Creek. That trail soon split and we took the left fork, which went by what seemed like a cave but was just more of an alcove. It looked like both trails went down the drainage towards Willow Creek, but the one we took started to head back up to the ridgeline again over to the Horns. We bushwhacked our way to the drainage, which wasn't all that easy to hike since it was narrow in some spots and overgrown in others. luckily we found the trail we didn't take and took that all the way down to Willow creek.

Willow Creek started ok, then it got overgrown in some spots. then we got to a pool that was nearly impossible to get around. I got around, just barely. I was gassed once I got passed it, doing my best Alex Honnold impersonation at one point clinging onto the side of the wall. I told Andy I didn't recommend what I just did and he didn't argue. He found an alternate way around, which took some time. I continued up Willow Creek to find another very tall cliff. I headed up the left side which looked like the best way around. it went quite a ways to the left, and we had to cut back to the right (even more uphill) to get back near the wash.

Once we got past the waterfall/cliff, we were so far above the wash it didn't seem worth the effort to go back into it and have to climb back out yet again. We had to descend into another drainage and climb back up to 88, and then we hiked about a quarter mile along the road to where we parked.

5.5 miles for the day, but quite a lot of effort put in. Got done just after 11, which was my target time, so overall a good hike. I'm interested now to check out the track and aerials to find where the other horse trails go and try to find a way to get to them again. Maybe one day I'll try the Horns of Dilemma, we'll see. The views up top were nice, especially once the sun came out. Weather was humid, which was only noticeable when the sun was out.

It's been a while since I've hiked with Chris and it's been even longer since I've done this loop. We set off from the parking area in the dark and started up the old jeep road to the ridge.

This area has long been a favorite of mine for sunrise hikes. The views from the ridge below 2881 and from the peak are really stunning. It was super cloudy when we made it up and there wasn’t much of a sunrise. It was humid, but pleasant.

The hike up to the peak is more or less defined now and pretty easy going for the most part. We made it up top and then started down the ridgeline towards the next segment. The last time I was up here it was dry and roasted. The "trail" was easy to follow back then, but with all of the grass and undergrowth, it was little less obvious this time around.

We made it down from the peak to the little saddle. We weren’t exactly breaking any land speed records and Chris was short on time. We came across junction of the trail up and a horse trail that had started up from Bagley Tank and after a quick look at the topo map, we opted to hike this down to Willow Creek rather than go up to the little ridge above the Horns of Dilemma. This trail turned out to be the only defined trail we had all day.

We made it to the wash and started down towards the road. This area was as I remembered, but a little more overgrown. The falls/pour-overs were definitely sketchy as I remembered. I watched Stretch Kiriluk barely make the traverse across the first major obstacle and I opted to do a bypass up and over the little cliffs instead.

We bypassed the last falls and bushwhacked up to the road up and over the little section of ridges above the falls.

A nice day in a cool area. The cloudy and hazy conditions made for not-so ideal photography, but a good hike with Chris is always time well spent.

I had been wanting to hike up to Peak 2881, and since I had never been to Horns of a Dilemma I figured that I would go there also. Rather than doing an out-and-back we made a loop out of it by coming back on Willow Creek.

We did the loop clockwise.

We followed a pretty decent use trail up to Peak 2881. The scenery was nice and this portion of the hike was enjoyable, and I would do this segment again.

We then made our way to the Horns, by first following a ridgeline, then picking up a good trail for a ways, and then more-or-less bushwhacking to the Horns. Views were nice on this section also so I enjoyed this portion.

From the Horns we followed a decent use trail over to Willow Creek, which we took back to the trailhead. I did not like hiking in Willow Creek at all --- walking 3+ miles in a dry creek bed isn't my thing and I thought this section was boring. We had to get out of the creek 2-3 times to bypass some dryfalls.

We eventually slogged our way back to the TH.

I enjoyed the first half of this hike; the second half not so much.

Ryan and Klaudia proposed this one and it fit the bill for an easy-ish Saturday. A few times there was a breeze that got borderline chilly, but mostly it was a little warm, fitting the theme for the last, oh, 5 years. Needless to say, not a drop of water was found. Thankfully, a similar amount of people were encountered. Did see a squadron of javvies.

We messed up on the exit by following the most established route, which dropped us out on the 88 earlier than desired.

Besides the insane number of cairns, there's been some unauthorized official trail work along the way. Not sure if it's mountain bikers or equestrians, but they've had actual tools out there clearing the path. It is what it is. Apparently not everybody appreciates undeveloped route-finding and exploration.

With a full day of steady rain lingering into the next morning and plenty of time before a mid-afternoon flight, I figured the Goldfields would be a good spot to knock out a few miles to take advantage of the conditions without having to spend too much time driving to and fro.

Somebody has decided that the undeveloped route to 2881 should be marked with cairns often reaching 3 feet in height, and built so closely to each other that the lovechild of Stevie Wonder and Helen Keller could find this summit while drunk. Needless to say, I enjoyed returning some of the pristine views here to a more natural state, politely leaving two or three rocks stacked in some key locations for those who might otherwise be unable to solve the puzzle of ascending to the visible summit above.

North of 2881, the path was more enjoyable, with much more discovery and adventure. Rain showers lingered off and on, and the storm low clouds moved in and out, sometimes obscuring our view to less than 100 feet, and other times opening up great scenes across the landscape. It was pretty perfect!

We swung by the Horns of Dilling before dropping down and making our way off-trail up the drainage back toward the car. I was hoping for a little bit more flow here, but despite the rain, a long dry spell resulted in mostly just a trickle with a few pools.

After the drive home I had time for a quick shower and arrived at PHX as the last group was boarding. Couldn't think of a better way to do it!

Still to hot for any longer hikes, so we thought we would head out to this hike and do some more re-enforcements of some of the cairns. After leaving the road (this is fading, might need to add some cairns here also), we have some great cairns up to the G.I. Joe overlook already, We added more that go up to the saddle and to the peak. After reaching the peak you go along the ridge. We added some along the ridge, but it was getting hot, so we headed back home.

Just about stepped on a rattlesnake on the way back. Wasn't expecting that guy at this time of day.. Anyhow got some good photos of him!

We headed to the northeast Goldfields to check out some new areas, and I cobbled together a few different points of interest from various routes and triplogs, mostly centered around the 2881 Consensus Loop, knowing we wouldn't have time to see them all today. We parked at the small pullout along SR 88 where the Consensus Loop starts and followed the route clockwise toward 2881 on a windy morning. The route leading toward the peak was extremely well-cairned...I recognized @Yoder's handiwork from hiking Sunset Arch a few months ago, and some of the cairns along the route today were as much artwork as they were trail markers :).

We circled around to the east side and then up to the peak, and the wind was almost unbearable on top, with gusts that must have been up to 40-50 mph. The views were great, but we didn't spend much time up there before heading down the more gradual slope on the north side.

[ youtube video ]

The traverse to Horns was a very scenic area, with a small arch along the route and a good size cave up in the formations behind us. I'd added the Little Keyhole Saddle route among the other points of interest, and after hiking down from Horns, @TBoneKathy waited while I took a quick detour to see if I could find the keyhole. I didn't have a specific location and didn't know what it looked like, but when I reached the spot where I thought it might be located, I did see a tiny, keyhole-shaped arch on top of a rock formation. The description said it was small, but this was only a few inches tall...someone who's been there will have to confirm if what I saw was actually Little Keyhole. If so, that's the smallest named rock formation I've encountered...if not, I guess I found Really Little Keyhole.

We detoured off the main loop again and explored north toward Peaks 2178 and 2135 and saw a few arches, but I didn't have time to go up to the peaks. Next up was Canyon Lake Massif 2276. Hiking along SR 88 with all the road noise wasn't exactly a highlight today, but the views from the massif made it a worthwhile stop, and the wind had calmed down some by afternoon.

[ youtube video ]

We hiked back to the loop and headed south following Willow Creek. It was a lot more rugged than a lot of the other Goldfield creek beds, and we had to bypass multiple deep pools on the hike out. The official route has two of the pools marked, but we there were 4-5 that we ended up navigating around--all of them surprisingly deep given the dry conditions, though it looked like at least one was fed from a spring upstream. The final large pool had a lot of debris nearby...old irrigation tubing, buckets, rusty pipe, and other random stuff. That final section of the loop ended up being a lot and interesting than anticipated...there's a lot more going on down along the spring than you'd ever see just driving by on 88.

As expected, we didn't get to everything I'd mapped out, but it was a good day with a lot of variety in the terrain and scenery. In typical Goldfield fashion, we saw ~3x the number of arches as we saw other hikers today :). And I found a Leatherman multi-tool in the dirt on the way to Horns of Dilemma, which was a nice bonus.

We thought we would do the first section of this hike, it has great views, there is never anyone on it, and it is near by.
We decided to hike to the GI Joe overlook (someone placed a GI Joe on one of the rocks) to see if he was still there.

Trail was a bit overgrown with all the rain we received this late summer. We did locate GI Joe, he took a tumble off the rock he was on, so we built up his Cairn, and set him up.

We also decided to re-enforce and add more cairns on this segment (from start to GI Joe overlook). Should be easier to follow now. The goldfields have some really nice short hikes to what I think are the best views in the area all under 4 miles(there and back):
1. Sunset Arch (There and back)
2. Little 4 Peaks (Just to peaks and back)
3. Consensus Loop (To GI Joe overlook and back)

Photos are GeoCoded, so check out the pop-up map for image locations.

This is a nice hike with some great views. We followed the posted route until the third pool/waterfall then wife had enough and wanted to head to the road. This added extra mileage, Should have kept to the creek.

Great Views and water could be fun when water is flowing.
