I had been thinking of heading up to the Rim to check out the fall foliage, and upon seeing a triplog from @The_Eagle a couple of days ago I decided to go.

I actually did 2 hikes:
1) Maverick Canyon
2) Upper Buck Spring/Cabin Loop

I first went to the Maverick Canyon hike. It turns out that most of the maples here are past prime -- probably by a week or more. I saw some close to where I parked that were ok, but it was a bit disappointing to be a dollar short and a day late.

I then went over to Upper Buck Spring Canyon. Here some of the maples were at or near peak, but others were a bit past peak. Still this area was worth taking a look at. Most of the maples were within a half mile where I parked, but I walked through the canyon over to the Buck Springs cabins. It was very delightfall hike through the canyon -- the tread was great and it was mostly flat.

I had lunch at the cabin, and then decided to hike a bit of the cabin loop. I took the Barbershop Trail to the U-Bar Trail, and then hiked a bit on the U-Bar Trail. I was getting ready to turn around and go back, but saw some maple tree foliage a bit off the trail, and decided to investigate. I am glad that I did, because this area -- which I dubbed "Maple City" -- had the nicest foliage that I saw on the day. There were a good many mature trees that were near peak.

I imagine that one could hike on the cabin loop right now and come across some nice maple groves.

I think that the maple foliage on the Rim will play out over the next few days. In another week or so hopefully there will be some nice foliage in some of the canyons beneath the rim.

Mileage and elevation gain for these 2 hikes is below:
Maverick Canyon: 1.98 miles with 295 feet of elevation gain
Buck Spring Canyon/Cabin Loop: 8.3 miles with 1,198 feet of elevation gain

Foliage was substantial in Upper Buck Spring and in "Maple City"; moderate at best in Maverick Canyon; sporadic elsewhere.

Reference: A short Loop Hike via the [ Maverick Cyn Spur Maples - Mogollon Rim ] Hike Guide utilizing the entire FR9731W segment (no motorized vehicles allowed) to its lower end, then a short, easy to navigate off-trail segment down to connect with Maverick Canyon Drainage then past a now confirmed Maverick Canyon Perennial Spring to a pleasant, serene Meadow for lunch in Upper Maverick Canyon then a short return to connect through Maverick Cyn Spur Maples segment for a Loop Hike back to Park/TH Start at FR139-FR9731W.

My Granddaughter was visiting me for a full week, this second year in a row. This hike was our first of three planned AZ favorite area day drives and hikes that her Grandpa wanted to share good memories of with her :)

After this day hike, to say my 1st since Oct 4, 2021, and where I actually hiked that same day months ago!, we drove over to my favorite G/H campsite where we spent 4nts/5days and good memories of last June'21. We wanted to reminisce good times, and to do any necessary clean-up A/R prior-to our 3.5 hour drive back to my place in South Scottsdale. The following day was a day off to prepare for our next (2nd) Sierra Ancha Wilderness drive and off-trail hike adventure on Thurs-6/16!

When I decided to write-up a HAZ Hike Guide for this hike area this past August-2021, I was convinced that this was going to be an awesome hike for viewing our AZ Big Tooth Maples during prime Autumn :FG:

I planned a solo drive/hike here today (up at 4:30am back at 6pm, 260 R/T miles, ~7hrs of driving, and 3/4 tank of gas) to be kind-of disappointed :(

Part of my disappointment was my doing in thinking that Prime Autumn Colors for this area would be sometime this week of 10/4-7/21. I was incorrect.. these dates were way too early by a week or more. Also, I had hoped with the numerous stands of Big Tooth Maple in this section (Re: my August'21 visit [ photoset ] ) that there would be an abundance of different Colors, but unfortunately almost no RED at all and mostly all YELLOW to YELLOW-ORANGE.

Also, and very unfortunate (maybe due to just too much rain this Summer and early Autumn'21) a number of the Maple trees turning leaves are now infected with some type of possible fungus or bacteria that is causing the remaining leaves on the trees to have brown and black color spots.. [ photo ] .. it is very strange to see this on many of the Big Tooth Maple Trees in this hiking section with any color.

I hiked this section today plus an additional 1.5 miles out and back within Maverick Canyon (Upper) before returning to the Park/TH Start. I had plans to also drive further down The Rim Road (FR300) to FR321 for a short .5 mile hike within the always reliable Big Tooth Maple stands of [ Bill McClintock Draw (Upper) ] . I wanted to see and compare what was going on in this area with the Maverick Canyon Spur Maples area, but still having a 3.5 hour, 130 mile drive back home today, it just wasn't possible :( but taking a break at El Rancho in Payson, AZ, [ image ] made the long drive back more barrable :D

I'll try to have some pics up by mid-week to further document my first Autumn Season hiking this off-trail area.

This very pleasant short, scenic, and easy to off-trail navigate hike within the area of our Mogollon Rim- Cabin Loop Trails, has been on my "to check out list" for almost a year now.

As part of a 7 night/8 day planned AZ Monsoon Season vehicle camping/hiking trip, today was my day to checkout and view this new (to me) area for a hopeful return hiking trip during our upcoming Prime Autumn Season.

I confirmed within a 0.7 mile hike in, this Spur Canyon Drainage off of Maverick Canyon, has some of the largest continuous stands of [ Bigtooth Maple ] that I have previously viewed within our Mogollon Rim - Cabin Loop Area

I was impressed with my "out of season" first viewing visit and thought a new HAZ- Hike Guide was in-order to further document for all interested to also enjoy.
