This was my first foray into the trail system known as Hawes.

Linda suggested the east side of the park for the better hiking country, so I put together an 11-ish mile sampler to use as our guide. We got moving around 7:00 AM just as the skies were starting to lighten. The cloudy sky, 53-degree weather, and a slight breeze made things very pleasant. There is a plethora of trails out there, so having a GPS track of your route is definitely helpful.

It’s easy to tell that the majority, if not all, of these trails were named by mountain bikers. My favorite stretches of the day were Red Mountain Rush, Peak 2972, Iron Goat, and Pure O—mainly for the views and the terrain. Pure O is a Double Black Diamond in the MTB world that I would never consider riding; it’s steep and loose with numerous jumps (including one through a tree and another that spans a 20-foot gap).

It was good catching up with Linda again. Like HAZ... oops, that’s someone else!

Bruce and I opted for some all new to us local territory today. I'd been on some of the western Hawes trails with @tibber and Deborah about 4 years ago, but nothing on the eastern side. Bruce put together a good loop with a nice sampling of some of the eastern trails. We met at 0700 and got started, making the loop counter-clockwise. Having a track was helpful, as there are a ton of trails in this area. You could put together any combo of trails to suit whatever mileage/aeg you are looking for. Most of the trail surfaces are decomposed granite, which is prone to rutting, and the steeper sections can be slippery, but most of the time, we had good footing.

Nice clouds most of the morning, and a good breeze. It was very breezy up on 2972, and we scrambled up to the little peak just south of the high point, where there was an American flag anchored into a fancy setup with solar lights. Getting up and down 2972 was steep, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Some zigzagging on the southeast portion of the loop in order to incorporate more trails. My two favorite trails were probably Red Mountain Rush, and Iron Goat. Our final descent on Pure O did make me exclaim "wow" a few times, but mostly because I was trying not to fall. That trail is STEEP. If I tried it on a bike, I'd be dead. There was also an impressive gap for bikes to clear (at least 15') near the bottom of the trail.

Once back on level ground, it was a quick walk back to the trailhead. Nice to hike with Bruce again, and see some new trails, plus a peak. Not an area I'd hike often, but worth checking out on a weekday. Saw a lot of bikers and a few hikers. Weekends are probably awful.

I started from the new parking lot along the Bush Highway and did the same loop as a few weeks ago but this time I took the Scorpion Alley Trail heading east and came back on the Bush Lite East/West Trails. It was cold enough to need gloves the first hour or so. Once the sun hit, it warmed up quickly and was very comfortable the rest of the morning. Stayed just cool enough to not really break a sweat the entire time. Very clear skies and great scenery. Lots of green everywhere.

Went up to see the extremely rare double crested saguaro using the Hawes Trails. A couple of short off trail sections on the route up.

Started from the ATV TH on Ellsworth and did a lasso loop of Lance's Trail, High Noon and Wild Horse. Much more humid than yesterday and I was drenched after only 7 miles. Air and skies were very hazy, I imagine from the fire over in the Anchas. Lots of bikers out but almost no one for my last mile. No wildlife seen, barely even any birds.

Another Sunday morning easy hike close to home. Started from the Bush Highway southbound on the Scorpion Trail, west on High Noon, generally south on Stinger, then finished the loop on Bush Lite East. Cloudy at first, then the sun came out after an hour or so. Light traffic overall, but mostly all bikers. Saw one trail runner. No wildlife or feral fauna. Seems like this area has more gnats that other parts of metro Phoenix. They weren't bad but spring is here now, so it will get worse.

Slowly getting back into the swing of things. I've always liked the Hawes Trail system. I have a buddy that wanted to hike, but not on one of my "typical" trails. I am still dealing with my latest injury. This time an achilles tendon problem. Can't mess around with that one. So, PT, stretching, walking and some easy hikes is my future for the coming weeks.

We started off Usery Rd north of the pass and made a lasso loop with Wild Horse, Scorpion and High Noon back to the road via Wild Horse. LOTS of mountain bikers out. The weather was perfect.

Not many blooms out, but with the coming rains, I hope we get some splashes of color out there soon. It looks like the brittlebush is about to start and I can see the blooms forming on the cholla and hedgehog cacti.

A little soreness afterwards, but it felt good to get out and about. A quick and easy 5 miles.

Another early start a little before sunrise. I decided to revisit some of the trails in the western part of the Hawes Trail system. My goal was to hike 6-7 miles and see how the old knee is coming along.
One truck parked at the NRA Pit Trailhead along Usery Road when I arrived. The air was actually “cool” when I started out.

I started out on the Wild Horse Trail and cut over on High Noon Trail before bushwacking over to the Red Mountain Rush Trail. I wanted to see how I did with a little elevation after hitting flat ones for over a month. I did pretty well going up. I contemplated going all the way to the ridgeline area, but decided to head back down about half way up. I took the Red Mountain Rush back down until it ended and got back on Wild Horse and took it back to Usery Road. A 7 miles lasso loop trail.

I saw nobody at all for the first 30 minutes, but the mountain bikers started popping up and then really started zooming by as the morning progressed. No other hikers encountered, but a trail runner with headphones rocking out flew by me towards the end. The critter department was slow - birds, bunnies, ground squirrels and lizards. Still hoping to see a nice rattler out here.

I like these trails, so smooth and easy to follow. Most of the mountain bikers are courteous, but there’s always the biker snobs that think hikers should stay in the Supes and leave “their trails” alone. Oh well, sorry my biker bros, I will keep coming out here from time to time.

As I type this triplog, my knee is feeling ok. No ice required today and I haven’t even taken any ibuprofen either. I have a little way to go still, but my hard work and patience are paying off. I will be back to abusing my knees in no time.

A nice sunrise, even though there wasn’t a cloud in sky, a cool crested saguaro, good exercise and finished up just after 8am before the furnace kicked in. A Saturday morning well spent.

Nice 7 mile loop on the east side of the Hawes system. Lances, Jumping Jack, High Noon, up Red Mtn Rush, Goat, and back down Alpe d'Huez. That was a good cardio work out but my knees are showing their age. A few poppies on the ridgelines but nothing spectacular.

I wanted to get this one done before the summer heat hits. The hardest part is the climb at first and I knew I could get that done while it was still cool enough in the morning going up Alp D'Huez from Usery Road.

Near the top of Red Mountain Rush there's a social trail that goes to the 3 peaks on Usery Mountain. I made my way up to the first one and decided not to hike the mini ridgeline to the other two since I had a loop planned out. Views up there are really nice. Spotted my buddy's house in that neighborhood and took a zoom in pic that I texted him later.

Headed down Red Mountain Rush. Saw some bikers who had just passed me at the start of the Sunset Ridge. They were reading the warning sign at the top of that trail and then decided to head down Red Mtn. I asked the last guy to leave "You guys aren't going down that trail?". He responded, "it says experts only. That ain't us."

Red Mtn Rush had the most traffic of all the trails all day. All downhill, obviously, that's what it's designed for (for bikers). No problems with sharing, everyone was cool and I made sure to get off the trail ASAP when I could hear someone coming.

Finished before 11am, weather was getting a bit warm but not like it will be in another month or so. Parking lot was nearly empty when I got back, as compared to nearly full when I started. Saw no other hikers, only bikers all day.
