I have hiked 5 times since I put a hike up on HAZ.
You won't see any of them, as most of the hikes were a bit repetitious.

I had alot of acquaintances from the midwest show up for visits. Some I knew were coming to Arizona, and some just showed up at my doorstep.

All visitors wanted to experience Arizona hiking, so off I went as a tour guide.

I took most of them to Adero Trailhead, and tried to pick trails that they could enjoy. Some visitors are in great shape, and some ….. not-so-much.

After they left, I did this hike - Just for exercise.

I hiked the newly completed Mesquite Trail, and the 'new to me', North Leg Trail.
I had hiked the Mesquite Trail prior to it being completed. On that hike, when the trail abruptly "ended", I just bushwhacked to another trail.

Now, I'm ready to go out on my own adventures.

This was a variation of the Sonoran-Lower Sonoran Loop. On the way out I did an out-and-back on the North Leg Trail. Once I got to the 4 way junction at the end of the Promenade Trail I went out on the Mesquite Hollow Trail and returned on the Lower Sonoran Trail.

I did a variation of this loop by 1) going out-and-on the North Leg Trail on the outbound portion of the hike, and 2) taking the Mesquite Hollow Trail from the Sonoran Trail back to the Promenade Trail on the inbound portion of the hike.

It was a nice day out there -- sunny, breezy, and a bit cool. I had a windbreaker on for a while -- it would get cool when the wind gusts picked up and get warm when the gusts subsided.

I decided to get some morning miles in today by doing this hike. As usual, I did the loop CCW. On the way out I added in an out-and-back on the North Leg Trail, aka the trail to nowhere, to get some extra distance and elevation gain.

It was cool at the start of the hike, but it warmed up once the sun came up.

This was the first cool day in quite some time which made for an enjoyable hike, even if it drizzled for much of the hike.

I added a little extra to the loop by going out-and-back on the North Leg Trail on the way out, and then going up-and-over Peak 3098 on the way back.

With the new month starting I had planned to hike Mount Ord today. However, with the Sand Stone Fire still burning, I did want to take any chances on Highway 87 southbound being closed again when I finished hiking up to Ord. So I will save Ord for another day.

As for this hike, I did the loop CCW and on the way out I added an out-and-back on the North Leg Trail, aka the Trail to Nowhere.

There was decent cloud cover for the hike, but it is still hot and there was almost no wind blowing this morning.

I did the loop CCW and added an out-and-back hike on the North Leg Trail to get some extra distance and elevation gain.

The sunrise was decent this morning and there was some cloud cover in the first half of the hike which was nice.

About half way on the Lower Sonoran Trail someone had left a 5 gallon bucket next to the trail and there were lots of bees in and on the bucket. I am not sure what was up with that, but with all the bees on the bucket I left it alone.

I’m way behind on my triplogs, so I decided to jump to the front of the pack and work backwards. Did a short hike in the FHP. Wanted to do another trail that I hadn’t done and opted for the North Leg. Got out to Ardero TH a little after 5am. Hiked out to the North Leg on the Promenade and then did a simple in and out on the NL. The NL is only about .8 miles long, but it does lose/gain (got to hike back up) about 400ft. Not too shabby for a short trail. Single track with some decent grades at the back end. Wanted a little more than what the NL had to offer so I decided to hike up the north side of the Western Trail. A lot of switchbacks on this trail and, as I feared, a lot of shortcuts have developed bypassing the switchbacks. Not surprised. The switchbacks had been ridiculously tight and close together. As I was hiking up I noticed a new trail just to the west and north of the Western. Hiked up to the Overlook and then decided to hike back down the north side of the Western to check out the new trail. Looks like this new trail will take off in the same area as the Sonoran Loop. The trail says that it is still under construction, but it doesn’t look that far off. Looks like parts of this new trail will be very close to the Western. I can see a “use” trail developing if one isn’t created.

Nice hike. Encountered 7 hikers and 1 biker. Temps were great at 6 in the morning and there was actually some cloud coverage. Decent amount of wildlife…lizards, a chipmunk, quail, a thriving rabbit population and I assume a very annoyed snake. I spooked the poor guy going up the Western and then again going back down. Same spot both times. There must have been a nice warm spot on the trail. Construction out there is going gangbusters. I keep thinking they’re done building on the mountain and every time I go back they’ve razed a new, higher plot. We’ll be hiking through people backyards before they’re done. :(

Not on the trail but worth noting. On the drive out to Fountain Hills I’m pretty sure I saw a good-sized bobcat crossing Shea near the Mayo Clinic. :o

I decided to hike close to home this morning.

I did the Sonoran - Lower Sonoran Loop CCW, and hiked out-and-back on the North Leg Trail on my way out.

I talked to someone who was doing trail maintenance on the Lower Sonoran Trail. I thanked him for his work in keeping the trail so nice -- it is perhaps the best trail that I hike on in the Valley. I asked him about the new Sonoran trail that they are working on. He said that it would be called the "Sonoran View Trail" and would be open sometime next year. I believe that the long range plan is to have the new trail connect with the Quartz Trail in the Scottsdale Preserve. That will be nice as it will enable some longer loop hikes and provide a means to get to the Lost Dog Wash TH or the Gateway TH.

Flowers were light to moderate. I imagine that 80%-90% of the flowers were brittlebush.

I decided to stay close to home and do this double loop hike again. I also added an out-and-back hike on the North Leg Trail.

When I started going up the Western Loop Trail I noticed that work is progressing on the new Upper Sonoran Trail, which will hopefully be open before long. This trail will provide some other loop options in the preserve.

This was a hike close to home to stretch my legs a bit and to check out the wildflowers.

I did the loop CCW, which is the way that I always do it. Before doing the loop I made a side trip out-and-back on the North Leg Trail, aka the trail to nowhere.

There are still no brittlebush blooming, but there were quite a few poppies on the hike.

I was going to give the wildflowers a "Light" rating, but there were lots of poppies blooming on the way back so I figured that I'd call the flowers "moderate".

I decided to do a hike close to home today, and this one fit the bill.

I did this lasso loop CCW by going out on the Lower Sonoran Trail and coming back on the Sonoran Trail. Before starting the loop I added an out-and-back hike on the North Leg Trail.

I started early and beat the rain.

The north leg trail had some decent wildflowers -- lupine, fiddlenecks, scorpion weed, and blue richards. The 2 Sonoran trails did not have much though. No brittle bush is blooming in this area yet. It is a bit early yet for many wildflowers in this area, but I think that things will pick up later in the month.

I normally go out for new years eve and skip hiking on the 1st. However, was rather sick and this was the 1st day I felt capable. The other person wanted to head to the McDowells. I then suggested adero canyon since neither of us had started from that TH B4.

Came up with a route of intermediate length. Met that way at 9:30. Felt chilly at the start with the breeze. Jackets off 2 miles in. Had never hiked North Leg trail previously.

Hit the high point when we were nearly done. Perf difficulty for us since she hadn't done anything major for awhile. Met some cute Doodles along the route.

After the rain stopped this morning I headed to Adero Canyon to do this loop. I started on the Promenade Trail; made an out-and-back side trip on the North Leg Trail, aka the trail to nowhere; then once I got to the end of the Promenade Trail I did a loop by going out on the Lower Sonoran Trail and coming back on the Sonoran Trail. Once I got back to the Promenade Trail I took it to the trailhead.

There is a lot of up-and-down on this hike -- the elevation profile on my gps track looks like a roller coaster!

I only saw one other person on the hike. Apparently hikers at Adero Canyon are a fair weather crowd only.

I decided to stay close to home today and do this hike again.

I added in the trail to nowhereNorth Leg Trail to get some extra miles and elevation.

This is the first time that I went out on the Sonoran Trail and came back on the Lower Sonoran Trail. Any way that you cut it, the Sonoran Trail is the more difficult of the two.

It was really breezy this morning which made it feel cold early; it warmed up some once the sun came up though.

I decided to do this hike again from the Adero Canyon TH.

This time, I added in an out-and-back on the North Leg Trail. They should change the name of it to "Adero Mystery Trail" since it doesn't go anywhere. The mystery is why the trail was created in the first place. I guess it does serve the purpose of adding a little extra distance and AEG tp a hike.

It was a nice morning for a hike. I started a little later than normal to let the trails dry out a bit after some overnight rain. The sun was out for a bit but I had cloud cover for most of the hike, which was nice.

This is a repeat of a hike that I did a couple of weeks ago. This time I also added an out-and-back hike on the North Leg Trail.

The North Leg Trail is fairly new, and this is the first time that I have been on it. It is a weird trail -- it goes about 0.8 miles and then ends. Perhaps they will eventually add an addition to the trail so that it loops back to the Promenade Trail.

With the temperatures finally dropping a bit, it was a nice morning to be out hiking.
