After dropping off Radmila at the airport at 5am, I headed down I-10 to check out the Casa Grande Mountain Park and the trails there. I started from the Arica Road TH and did a loop taking the Spine Trail to the north, the Ridge Trail south down to the West Butte Trail, and headed back north on the East Butte Trail. About a half mile in on the Spine Trail I heard a whooshing noise behind me. I turned around to see a very low flying hot air balloon that had just cleared the hill behind me and snuck up on me. There was another balloon that showed up later. They flew across I-10 and seemed to land in some fields on the other side.

This area is very rocky and not much vegetation. Reminded me of some areas of South Mountain and Piestewa Peak. The trails had a lot of loose rocks, which tended to slow me down. As the heat kicked in, that slowed me down a bit more. By the end I skipped some of longer switchbacks on the East Butte Trail which was easy to do because every hill there has a semi-road that been cut into to by all the ATVs and mountain bikes in the area.

the Ridge Trail and West Butte Trail gave the best views being up higher. Most of what you could see was just the surrounding farm land, with far away views of Picacho, Mt Lemmon, and Superstition Mt and 4Peaks to the north.

Saw some hikers early on, but the numbers dwindled as the temperature got warmer. Not a whole lot to see in this area but a nice change to hike new trails for me.

Early morning hike in Casa Grande. The Radio Tower Rd is still on my to do list, but it is still closed due to on going construction. I kind of assumed that would be the case so I had the Spine Trail as a back up. First time using the Arica TH. Fairly easy to get to, though I initially missed the turn (Arica Rd. comes immediately after a truck stop). Huge TH. It probably could accommodate 30 cars…though I doubt that it sees more than handful at any one time. Got on the trail around 5am. As anticipated the trail was annoyingly without signage, (except for where the lasso starts). This was my third time hiking in this preserve and I’ve quickly learned that they don’t believe in maintaining signage for their trails. This wasn’t a huge deal as the trail was fairly clean up to the lasso. However, there were quite a few user trails that began to appear with the start of the lasso. This actually plays to my obsession since I like to “grid” trails. Started following the most eastern threads and worked my way west. Most of the use trails either lead to a dirt road that edged the preserve or fed back into each other. There were a couple that seemed to fade into a wash and I couldn’t pick up where they departed the wash. Always fun exploring new trails. Nothing remarkable about the Spine or the use trails. I left parts of the Spine Trail undone, so a return trip is in order.

Temps were decent for the early mornings. Wildlife was lizards, a chipmunk and several jackrabbits. Encountered 4 bikers while I was out, but otherwise had the trails to myself.
