I kind of assumed that would be the case so I had the Spine Trail as a back up. First time using the Arica TH. Fairly easy to get to, though I initially missed the turn (Arica Rd. comes immediately after a truck stop). Huge TH. It probably could accommodate 30 cars…though I doubt that it sees more than handful at any one time. Got on the trail around 5am. As anticipated the trail was annoyingly without signage, (except for where the lasso starts). This was my third time hiking in this preserve and I’ve quickly learned that they don’t believe in maintaining signage for their trails. This wasn’t a huge deal as the trail was fairly clean up to the lasso. However, there were quite a few user trails that began to appear with the start of the lasso. This actually plays to my obsession since I like to “grid” trails. Started following the most eastern threads and worked my way west. Most of the use trails either lead to a dirt road that edged the preserve or fed back into each other. There were a couple that seemed to fade into a wash and I couldn’t pick up where they departed the wash. Always fun exploring new trails. Nothing remarkable about the Spine or the use trails. I left parts of the Spine Trail undone, so a return trip is in order.
Temps were decent for the early mornings. Wildlife was lizards, a chipmunk and several jackrabbits. Encountered 4 bikers while I was out, but otherwise had the trails to myself. |
