A nice little Sunday morning stroll to the Agua Fria and back. There was a light flow at the river and some significant pools around the area where the trail crosses the river. We took a quick break, let the dogs play some and then headed back. There was only a handful of people on the trail, which may have been related to the north bound closure on the 17. This was my girlfriend's first hike since she broke her leg on November 22, hence the leisurely pace.

I had the day off in case something was going on as my daughter was married the day before. Nothing was going on, so I went for a walk instead.

I wore long sleeves as I thought it was going to be cooler, but it was mid-sixties when I started. It never got hot, so that wasn't a big deal.

I found two geocaches today, one was just off the BCT, that I found on my way out. After about five miles on the BCT, where the trail drops into a wash, I turned NW to hit a road and followed that north over a mile to the second cache. I saw one side-by-side along the road.

On the way back, I saw three mountain bikers. It was pretty quiet out, but I wasn't surprised as it was a Friday, not the weekend.

I went for an out and back on the BCT from Black Canyon City trailhead towards Little Pan Loop. I saw a couple people at the river crossing and one mountain biker later on. That's it. Oh, there were a couple older ladies in chairs at the trailhead for the BCC park trail.

The Agua Fria was low enough I was easily able to rock hop across, but it was still flowing well.

Heading up the climb a mile or so after crossing the river, there were several burros on the trail and heading straight down. When I reached where they were, maybe half a minute later, they were nowhere to be seen. I guess they were hidden in the brush below.

I stopped and had a Gatorade before then turned back. I tried to keep a strong steady pace all the way back as it was getting warmer out than I would have liked. It was mid-nineties when I finished a bit before noon.

I planned to hike all of the BCT beginning of April but bailed after a long first day reaching the Gloriana trailhead just off I-17 and the Bumblebee exit (triplog). Earlier this week with the upcoming cooler temperatures, my wife offered to drop me off where I left off to finish the trail.

We left home about 4:00 and headed up to Black Canyon City for the Friday Fish Fry at Chileens. We stopped at the Emery Henderson trailhead on the way where I cached a gallon of water. Fish and chips and beer really hit the spot.

After saying goodbye to my bride, I was on the trail about 5:25, earlier than I expected. The temperature was about perfect for walking; it was great to be on trail. I saw not a rattlesnake early on. Arrastre Creek wasn't flowing, but there were still large pools of water. Originally, I was hoping to reach and camp at Black Canyon Creek. It was still light when I got there so decided to continue on. The creek had good flow, so I took my shoes off and waded across. It finally started getting dark as I neared Soap Creek, so I pulled my headlamp out. Once at Soap Creek, set up camp a short distance up from the trail on the creek bed. There was a large moon and sleeping in the canyon sheltered me from it most of the night.

I set my alarm for 4:30 but didn't hear it and woke up at 5:00. I was on the trail at 5:30. I reached the first Agua Fria crossing and didn't see a spot to rock hop across, so I took my shoes off and waded. The water was ankle deep, so quite a lot less than the last time I tried to cross here. I continued on to the second crossing. Again, I took my shoes off and waded across. The river channel moved from the far bank some after the high flow this year, so that was interesting to see. I filled up my water before continuing.

When I reached the Little Pan Loop, I took the west side as I like it better than the east side. Probably because there's no road walking on the west. Not too far in I crossed a wash with a Mesquite tree providing shade, so I stopped and had lunch which consisted of a Complete Cookie, a Snickers bar, and a bottle of Gatorade; a nice quick 750 calories or so.

I reached the third Agua Fria crossing where I again took my shoes off and waded across. I kept them off as I drank a liter of water and filled my water to capacity. There were a few bottles of water cached at the Table Mesa trailhead. I thought about grabbing some, but I wasn't very far from where I filled up. It was also early enough in the day that I knew I would make it to Emery Henderson where I had water.

As usual for a Saturday, there was a lot of shooting going on in the Table Mesa area. I was happy when the popping faded away as I left the area.

I made it to Emery Henderson plenty of time before dark. I grabbed my water and went to a Ramada where I called my wife and ate dinner. I was close enough to home and had gone far enough, that I decided to spend the night. I knew the moon would be bright and being under the Ramada would help with sleeping.

I took my watch off to be able to hear the alarm, so I woke up at 4:30. It took me a bit longer to get out of camp dealing with water, etc., so I wasn't on trail until 5:15. Interestingly enough, I had to wait for traffic to cross New River Rd. There's nothing spectacular about BCT south of Emery Henderson except for the sunrises and wild burros. I was blessed with both.

From the end of the BCT (Carefree Hwy), I continued south on 51st Ave until Dove Valley Rd. Where I was not allowed to continue through the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Co chip plant construction. After talking to the guards, I headed east on Dove Valley to 43rd Ave where I turned south. I crossed under the 303 through the construction of new on/off ramps, where I reached a chain-link fence blocking access to the south. Climbing over seemed risky as I figured I'd slip and rip my leg open and bleed out. I continued west along the fence where two gates were open for the construction. With that, I was easily able to cross the barb-wire fence, then head cross country to 51st Ave, cross the CAP canal, go through Deem Hills and made it home 10 of 11:00.

I packed pretty light for this. I had a polycro groundsheet and no shelter. I had my Thermarest XLite and down quilt. I wore a pair of running shorts and a long-sleeved button up shirt. Besides that, I had an extra pair of socks, a wind jacket and a fleece hoody. No stove, I cold soaked Saturday's dinner. I'm guessing my pack weighed about 17 lbs. at the start with all my food and a gallon of water. It should have weighed 17.5, but I forgot my Fritos.

This was a pleasant surprise. There were still lots of flowers blooming, even some poppies and some Blue Richards (why can't we write their real name?). The Lupine were all dry but fun to see.

I headed up to Black Canyon City to hike some of the BCT and find three geocaches. I went off the BCT once it turned south towards Little Pan. It was cool in the morning but was really nice when I finished.

I almost grabbed a trail mix snack pack before I left but thought the two bars I had would be enough. They would have been, but they weren't in my pack. Oops. At least I had a bottle of Gatorade that I sucked down before heading back. That really wasn't enough calories, but it helped.

There was a bit more water in the Agua Fria than eight days prior. No matter, I took my shoes off and crossed barefoot both coming and going.

There was a smattering of flowers but it's still a bit early for that area. Should be good a couple of weeks from now.

Took my wife up to Black Canyon City for a short hike along the BCT, then the fish fry at Chileen's afterwards.

We started at the Black Canyon City trailhead and followed the BCT southbound to the Agua Fria where we hung out for a few minutes, then headed back to the truck.

It was very nice out at mid 60s and calm too after a breezy day. All the snow seems to have melted off the Bradshaws but the Agua Fria wasn't flowing as I as I thought it would be. It would be a simple matter to cross it, though we didn't.

There were lots of people out, mostly runners stretching their legs before the big race this weekend.

Oh, the fish was really good too, so great way to end the day.

Well, the first Tuesday of the month means an additional 20% geezer discount at the Columbia Outlet Store in Anthem. Cathy and I decided to kill two birds and get in a hike while we were up in that area.
I used the HAZ hike finder and these two trails starting from the Black Canyon City Trailhead popped up.
Some photos posted by @FOTG made the decision easy. We also noticed that @rcorfman hikes these trails on a regular basis pertaining to his geocache locating.

We left the TH at a little after 10am and were quickly impressed with the trail conditions. Somebody's doing a very good job. The tread was in excellent shape on both trails. Less than 1 mile in the SloFolks passed a group of 4. Yeah, you read that right...we passed people. To be fair, they were probably tourists, and they probably had not ever hiked before, but hey, we don't know that for a fact. 8-[ Gotta take the win however you can. :-)

After the hike we went to the Columbia Store where Cathy found a new hiking shirt and a fleece vest for almost no money at all. She celebrated with some chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and I got to pick our lunch spot...In-N-Out Burger. Yum.

This is the first time I've done this hike since I originally wrote the guide. This is one of my favorite sections of the BCT. Except for the area around the south end at Little Pan Loop, it is a great desert hike. On this day the river was high so I waded across barefoot at the first crossing. The water came up to my knees. For the second crossing near the end of the hike I walked across in my hiking boots. The cold water felt good on my tired feet. The AEG is higher than in my original guide because I parked at the top of the last hill down to the Little Pan TH. My SUV doesn't have the clearance for that part of the road. A late lunch at Rock Springs Cafe rounded out the day.

There's been a few new geocaches published not far off the BCT between Black Canyon City trailhead and the Little Pan loop. This outing was to find a couple of them. It ended up being more of a walk than I anticipated but I enjoyed being on the trail - and off, as one was off the trail quite a distance. The weather was cool and overcast most of the time. I had two layers on to start but took one off after the climb around four miles out. I forgot sunscreen but fortunately I had a bandana I wore under my hat. The trail was pretty quiet today; I saw a few mountain bikers and a few hikers.

I figured since today is Christmas Eve, that I should take a hike on the BCT and find geocache, Twas the Night Before Christmas.

What a wet day! It rained most all of my walk, hard at times. Some places of the trail were soggy soft but not too much and mostly near the Black Canyon City trailhead. There was water flowing down the trail in many places too. The Agua Fria was flowing enough where I wasn't able to rock hop across. It's easy to wade across when your feet are already soaked.

Since it was wet, but not cold (50s) I wore a pair of running shorts, short sleeved wool t-shirt, long sleaved polyester t-shirt, and my wind jacket. I also used an umbrella for when it was raining, which was almost the whole hike. The DWR is completely gone on the wind jacket but it does keep the warmth in, so I was comfortable the whole hike. There were a few places where it got very windy and I had to hold the umbrella with two hands and even collapse it a bit too.

Decided to head to Black Canyon City and take the Black Canyon Trail south to the road to Tip Top and back. The parking lot was pretty full when I arrived and I saw quite a few people on the trail towards the Agua Fria. Not so many after I crossed it, though there were several Mt bikers out. I probably saw ten or so.

The trail is in good shape though there are a few places where the trees or bush need to be trimmed back. The biggest issue was all the stacks of rocks. I resisted the temptation to let them stand and toppled literally scores of them. After crossing the Agua Fria, but before the climb, for awhile there was a stack every ten yards or so.

Except for stopping to topple rocks, I walked non-stop to the road where I turned around, then went back down to Cottonwood Gulch where I took a short break under a tree. There I had a Gatorade and ate some food that I noticed expired June 2019. It tasted okay but had a hint of cardboard.

The return trip went easy enough. I only had to topple a couple stacks I missed on the way out.

Beautiful near full moon out this morning. I was hoping to enjoy some of it on my hike but alas I did not get to the TH until just before 6am. Missed the “moonset”, but started at a good time for the early morning lighting. No need for a headlamp. I realized halfway out to Black Canyon City that I forgotten my Garmin ](*,) , but I wasn’t that worried because I had done this trail a couple of times before. Love this section of the BCT. About a mile in and you get some of the best views that this trail has to offer. I remember the first time I did this trail how amazed I was with how the canyon opens up. It still I impresses. The Agua Fria was flowing decently, but it was easily crossed. Some productive individual placed some decent sized logs across the water. (We’ll see how long that lasts through the year). The climb out of the canyon seems daunting, but it shouldn’t be. The trail is in no hurry to get anywhere and takes an amazing amount of time to reach the high point with a lot of sweeping twists and turns. Ideal for bikers and runners alike. :) Trail is well marked and easy to follow. There are a couple of road crossings, but all instances are well signed. The trail is also in great shape though it gets a little rocky after the second road crossing.

I went in thinking I knew where I was going. In my mind I wanted to turn around at the top of Little Pan Loop, but in my mind I was seeing the Boy Scout Loop juncture. Needless to say, I cruised by the Little Pan Loop juncture without realizing it. I realized what had happened when I got to the second major crossing of the Agua Fria. This actually wasn’t a bad occurrence. Last year, when I had tried to this southern leg of BCT I wasn’t able to because the Agua Fria was flowing so strongly. So I ended up doing a section that I had missed last year. That being said I did not do the loop. When I hit the sand (there was no water flowing at this spot, though there were pools of water), I turned around and headed back. Weather was beautiful!!, though windy! Surprisingly not a lot of activity on the trail. Wildlife was only quail and rabbits. Only one runner and 1 hiker west of the Canyon and the flowing water. Lot more activity once I got within 1.5 of the TH. Mileage is just a guess, but I think it is pretty close to what I did.

Took the dogs up to walk a short section of the BCT today. We only hiked in as far as the river and then returned the way we came after some fun along the water. The temps were perfect and there were some nice clouds complimenting the crisp blue sky. It appears fall is just now getting under way out there. Does it ever really end in this state? The trail to the river was a little busy with bike and foot traffic, as one would expect on a Sunday morning.

The weather finally got cool enough to head back up to this trail and knock out some segments of it. I started at the Black Canyon City TH by Rock Springs and headed south towards the Little Pan Loop to where I left off 3 months ago. I marked it with my GPS and also put a cairn there. The cairn was still there today.

Early it was pretty cool and windy for the first couple hours. Even as the sun came up, the trail got higher and the wind picked up there. Crossing the Agua Fria River I got off the trail for a bit but found it again easily. The first couple miles of the BCT here is near or part of another trail system that loops around and back to the trailhead there. Might be something to check out with the family one weekend.

I thought it would be only 6.5 miles to where I left off, but it turned out to be just over 7, no biggie. The hike wasn't too difficult, but the last couple miles on the way back my feet were a little sore. Coming back downhill towards the Agua Fria was the most rocky part of the trail. Other than that, it was mostly pretty smooth.

Up until the last 2 miles back, I only saw bikers and 2 trail runners. Once I crossed the Agua Fria again, the number of dayhikers doing the loop increased considerably. Made pretty decent time getting done in just under 6 hours.

I wanted a longer hike so decided to hike the BCT from Table Mesa TH to the road to Tip Top and back. No pictures and no stops except to take my shoes off and on the two crossings of the Agua Fria. The first crossing I had to stop shortly afterwards to dump out the sand I mistakenly got in my shoes. Yes, the Agua Fria was flowing high enough that there was no easy way to rock hop across.

I got a bit later start as I spent some time sewing up the tears of a torn pocket on my pack so I wouldn't lose my food like I did last week.

The trail was busy from the trailhead to the Agua Fria, both out and back. South of the river, I only saw three mountain bikers.

Besides the Agua Fria river, there was water flowing at the creek about 5.75 miles out and lots of standing water (probably underground flow) at Cottonwood Gulch.

This time of the year sure is prime hiking time.

Shortly after the turn around, I stopped in Cottonwood Gulch where I sucked down a Gatorade and grabbed a packet of trail mix that I ate once I was walking again.

On the way out, I saw a good sized gopher snake. It was stretched out about 5' with it's tail on the trail. I touched it's tail just to scoot it off the trail. It wasn't happy and coiled up in a striking pose hissing. The hissing sounded similar to a rattlesnake. It was interesting.

Surprisingly, I only saw three mountain bikers and one hiker today. The hiker was just starting when I was finishing. I figured I'd see lots of people, it being Sunday and the weather being about perfect for a day on the trail.

Finally back on the BCT after my PCT hike. It's about time. Basically, I started at the Black Canyon City trailhead and went south, crossed the Agua Fria, then climbed the hill. At the top, I turned around and went back.

The trailhead was packed full for a training run from Bumble Bee to here. I actually parked along the road next to the trailhead parking.

There were a few runners as I made my way up to the BCT but as soon as I passed the junction, no more runners, which was expected since I went south and they were coming from the north. A lady bagged her dog's poo at the junction and left it. I believe she actually picked it up on her way out as I didn't see it on my return. Amazing!

I actually felt like crap and was tempted to turn around after 45 minutes, but by then I figured I might as well tough it out and go to the top. Glad I did.

When I finished the hike, there was actually room to park and some runners were still trickling in but most had finished and left.

Signage, tread and trail maintenance is remarkable. Passed several mtn bike groups, all friendly. Our loop included an out-n-back to Black Canyon City TH on the NE end of our loop. Apparently this 3 mi/340 aeg out-n-back to Agua Fria River is a popular day hike.

Our return followed Agua Fria River for 1.2 miles. It was low enough to cross multiple times without major mishap. A biker said the river was much higher just a week ago. We explored Gillette Arizona. The area is very trashed since it's easily accessible by wild groups and not monitored.

Then we picked up the east side of Little Pan Loop back to Table Mesa TH. Equally scenic to the west side. Appears less used and a hint less maintenance love.

Great hike, recommended!

Very light flow, large pool for sure. Tree trunk bridge was good enough to cross dry.

1st trip
A dawn start at the Table Mesa TH, with nice temps and orange skys.

I cobbled together a loop using the BCT-Little Pan Loop, the Agua Fria River and a side trip to Gillett.

After last weeks all off trail jaunt, it was refreshing to have well groomed trails. Taking the CW options, we had the trail to ourselves until just before we started the drop to the Agua Fria towards the Black Canyon TH. Here we started seeing a few groups of bikes. Down at the river, we opted for the 3 mile out and back to the Black Canyon TH.

This is evidently a popular family hike. Quite a few people/couples/families were doing this portion. It would make for a great Arizona Sampler Hike for out of town guests. Close to the valley, short, nice geology, and a riparian area.

Off to the Gillett ruins via 1.25 miles of easy travel in the Agua Fria.

Short History Lesson:
The town of Gillett is incorrectly spelled as Gillette on most maps. It was named for Dan B. Gillett, the Tip Top mine's superintendent. It was where the mill for the Tip Top Mine was located and was a stage coach stop for the Phoenix-Prescott route.

At its height in 1878, Gillett had six streets the Mill, post office, a bank, assay office, hotel, real estate office, livery stable, lumberyard, meat market, truck farm, dairy, warehouse, two blacksmiths, two stagecoach stations, four stores and nine saloons/gambling houses. There was also a cemetery with 40-50 plots.

252, 25'X100' lots were for sale in Gillett in 1875 - 1878. The only obvious remains are that of the Burfind Hotel.

We took the eastern potion of the loop back to the Table Mesa TH. The last hour or so was in a steady drizzle.

Jack Rabbits, a swarm of Javelina, a gaggle of quail, and covey of Burros were among the fauna observed on the day.

I decided to go for a longer hike today as I haven't done anything much over ten miles so far this year. I hiked about half of this a few weeks ago with my daughter and that wetted my appetite for a longer stretch along the BCT.

The weather was great today. A bit warmer than I expected, especially wearing long sleeves.

I saw seven mountain bikers and didn't see any other hikers until the last mile or so on my return. It was pretty quiet out but that was no surprise for a Monday.

I was expecting to see some brush starting to grow for the upcoming spring flowers but there really isn't anything. The flower show this year is looking to be dismal at best. :(
