Prepping for another GC trip in a few weeks and this was the last big hike I needed. Took the day off work in order to fulfill a family obligation this weekend. What a difference doing this during a weekday vs the weekend. Don't think I saw another person for at least three hours.

Went up to the summit and back down. Nothing too exciting to report other than Bellows Spring is back up and running. Someone fixed the pipe. Bumped into my friend Jerry out getting ready for another ultramarathon in his mid-70's. He took a page from the Bob Martin retirement manual. Retire to Green Valley and spend your golden years hiking in the Santa Rita's a few times a week.

Once done with the first section, stopped by the car to fill up my water bottles and headed back up. This time with Josephine Canyon as my destination. Unfortunately not as impressed with this trail the second time I hit it. First time I enjoyed how remote and untouched it felt. Second time the trail has been discovered by smugglers. There was trash all over the place. A few big dumps of plastic garbage bags, food, water and clothes. Then a smattering of Mexican candy & food wrappers along the remainder of what I hiked. This might explain why I'm seeing cars driving down from Madera Canyon at 4:30-5AM when I'm heading up.

Overall a decent day for hiking, little toasty at the end. Felt nice to jump into the pool at home. The weather keeps going like this it will be pool season until November.

up super trail to josephine saddle. took josephine canyon trail down to the road and followed that to a confluence of a couple dirt roads where there was an abandoned car parked crazily on the hillside, on a spare with open trunk and windows. didn't look like it had been there long. saw the crosser on the way back up.

i kinda forgot how nice josephine canyon is.

took agua caliente out to jack mountain then continued on to vault mine and took that down

got to madera at about 710. there was still ample parking. it was a beautiful day in the santa ritas

Trying to expand my horizons and scout out new trails in the Santa Rita's. Did a lasso loop up Old Baldy to Josephine Saddle, down into Josephine Canyon and finished off with the Super Trail.

Headed up Old Baldy and made pretty decent time to the Saddle. Hunted around for about 30 seconds and the Josephine Saddle trailhead is pretty easy to find. Immediately drops off the saddle into some dense forest. Easily one of the prettiest trails I've been on in southern Arizona. Right now there was a thick covering of pine needles and various leaves all over the trail, so some route finding is needed. Luckily the trail is just cairned enough to guide you, I only got off track once. Only went down to the intersection with the dirt road, didn't feel like running on a jeep trail. Turned around and headed back up the way I came.

Standard descent down the Super Trail and back to the car. Thanks to some insomnia last night I was here early and was heading home by 8:30 AM.

Work took me to Green Valley today, so that put the Santa Ritas right at the top of the docket! I hiked up Mt. Wrightston a few months ago and really enjoyed it, so this was an easy choice. I got started hiking a bit after 3 so I knew I would not have time for the big guy, as good as that may have sounded. I did this loop clockwise, up the Old Baldy trail to the Josephine saddle. I got off on the wrong trail here, I started getting suspicious after I lost a few hundred feet of elevation, I am pretty sure I was on the Josephine Canyon trail. Nice trail, but a bit overgrown and some downed logs. I got myself turned back around and onto the Agua Caliente trail. There were some nice views off the ridge, but the wind was howling pretty fiercely any time I was not protected by a slope face. There were a few overgrown spots, and the Jack Mountain spur took a little negotiating, but certainly nothing too crazy. I made the switch from short sleeve and ballcap to long sleeve and beanie up top to keep my warm enough. I found the Carrie Nation trail pretty easily and headed down. Very steep on the way down, but footing was good except for a few spots heavy with pine duff.I got back to the van about 5:30 for the long, windy drive home. Saw a few does on the drive out, but otherwise there was not much wildlife to be seen, I expected aas much due to the high winds all afternoon. I didn't see any bears this trip, must mean that the bear spray I bought works, right? This hike is a great alternative to Wrightston if you do not have as much time, good push for sure with some nice views to boot. Good water flowing all along the Carrie Nation trail too.

Just a few Sycamores and Ash trees starting to turn. I would imagine the next two weeks will be good.

This is a round trip hike from Madera Canyon, Old Baldy Trail to Josephine Saddle and down Josephine Canyon Trail. Does not look like this trail is too heavily traveled but trail was easy to follow. Not a lot of views from the trail since you stay down in the Canyon most of the way. Point of interest was the old cabin on the lower portion of the trail. I could not find any history on it though. The trail ends at a jeep trail and you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. There were signs of Illegal travel (water bottles, clothes and blankets) but I didn't see any one along the trail.

Made my first trip out to Josephine Canyon as part of a reverse lasso loop involving Old Baldy up and Super Trail down from Josephine Saddle. On my way down the canyon it was fine. On the way back up, the hiking magic kicked in. Every warm breeze had the scent of pine and a butterfly. There were jays and deer everywhere. Heck, I even saw the ol' turkey gang way out on Josephine Canyon trail. It was one of those times when you feel the trail was made just for you.
