Kelly and needed to squeeze in a hike on one of the few days we’re both in AZ this summer. Chumley came along to enhance the whining. Just about perfect weather for July in AZ. We got started around 0500. One other vehicle in the lot. Chumley caressed the hood of that truck and determined it had not been parked for very long. We headed up Peralta, happily in the shade. Humid, but moments of breeze felt great. Saw the one other hiker at Fremont Saddle.

From there, we headed out to the lone pine and took the obligatory pics. Then headed down Cave Trail. There are still a few vague spots in places, but overall it gets easier to follow every year. Temps stayed in the 70s the entire hike. This is a great little loop when there are no other people around. No vehicles besides mine in the lot when we finished. Surprisingly, only two vehicles at the Wave Cave parking when we left. Good to see both Kelly & Chumley this morning!

Decided to take advantage of a cloudy morning with temps in the 70s. A July delight! :y:

Apparently exactly 1 out of ~5 million other Phoenix-area people agreed with that sentiment, and that was just fine with me.

Clouds were nice though Peralta is shaded anyway. Higher up a nice breeze helped knock down the moistitude in the air. Apparently it's been 15 years since I've done Cave Trail. I didn't remember any of it. Fun!

Good to see the ladies of the lands of potatoes and corn.

My buddy saw my pix from Sunday and decided he had to go too! We hiked up Peralta and out to the lone pine for lunch then came down Cave. He isn’t one for exposure so we took an alternate route down from the Fortress that goes around the north side from the slide to avoid the down-climb at the tub. Another excellent day in the Supes!!

Solo trip up Peralta and down Cave Trail. Did some off-trail exploring along the way. Clouds made it nice for pix but also made it cool and breezy! The down-climb from the tub had more exposure than I remembered! But there is pure Supes beauty around every turn!!

The last time I hiked to Robbers Roost was in 2021 with Warren and his dog Stella. We did it again today. This time we hiked up Peralta, then from Fremont Saddle back to Robbers Roost. After exploring Robbers Roost we hiked back to Fremont Saddle then down the Cave trail and Bluff Springs to the trailhead.
There was a little bit of trickling water here and there, along with some blooming hedgehogs and ocotillo.
Great weather. Fun hike.

Quick overnight w/ the daughter. She had a birthday party at noon, so we didn't start on the trail until after 3pm. Maybe 10 groups hiking down Peralta, only 2 groups that spent the night up there. We chose a campsite that was just east of the saddle and had a quiet night with great sky & needle views. Temps dropped down to maybe 40 overnight, not a bad night for cowboy camping. Came down on Cave Trail so she could get some more caving in. The butt-slide area wasn't as bad as I remembered, pretty easy and enjoyable hike down. Tons of memories and she's already asking for a longer trip in the future.

john proposed this combo after i refused to hike on south mountain again today
got going around 0745
forecast low was 35, temps were oddly warmer than that at 48 - windy though
i might have overdressed
up peralta to the saddle, down cave trail, up bluff spring, finishing on dutchman
this was a fun hike
hadn't been on cave trail in a couple years
nice to be back in the supes
we saw quite a few people along the way
thanks john, good suggestion :)

Kelly wanted to get away from my beloved South Mountain. Blasphemy! I came up with a hike we hadn't done before. Turned out to be a couple miles longer than I thought it would be.
A little chilly starting out with the wind. Very nice once we got warmed up and in the direct sunlight.
We chatted with a few hikers/backpackers we came across.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly! :)

Beautiful day to be out hiking!! So glad to try a new trail! I've never been on crosscut, so decided to try it today. So glad to have read the @DarthStiller triplog saying that the official route is not accurate for the descent to Peralta. I used the mentioned route from @adilling, and it was perfect! Thank you! 😁 The crosscut trail was super easy to find and is well defined the entire length from terrapin to Peralta. Follow the cairns when descending to Peralta and also use @adilling route.

Parking lot was almost full on arrival to Peralta Trailhead. We headed out and saw no one on bluff spring, terrapin, or the crosscut. We saw our first people on Peralta right at the crosscut junction. We saw 2 more single hikers on Peralta before Fremont saddle. After a snack, we headed down on cave and saw 2 more people at devil's slide. They were having trouble finding a way up. They watched us come down, but after a while, they gave up and turned around. :(

Beautiful day for a hike if a bit hot for a December day! 😁😁😁

A fantastic loop with gorgeous views of this area of the superstitions. Few other hikers encountered - a large bonus given how full the parking lot was and the number of vehicles in the "caravan" out Peralta Road on our way out.

It has been decades since I've hiked in the superstitions, and it's nice to be reacquainting myself with the area. Many years ago, I'd hiked the full loop around Weaver's Needle - the Crosscut makes for a shorter day, and gains some up close views of the rocky wonderland at the base of Weaver's Needle. Weaver's Crosscut was surprisingly easy to follow - we followed the obvious path, which deviated from the pre-downloaded route (I downloaded from another app/site). Cave Trail was harder to follow in some areas (especially post the Devil's Slide feature) where it traveled on areas of rock escarpments. I admit I would not have anticipated the Devil's Slide was a part of the route if not for my hiking partner, who had hiked the trail previously. If hiking on the weekend and looking to escape the traffic on Peralta, Cave was a welcome alternate route though certainly not for everyone given the need for route finding and navigating the Devil's Slide feature.

It was a lot warmer than expected (80s). The parking lot had a number of open spaces at 1030, which was surprising. We passed a lot of people along the way, many of whom were wearing red sweaters or jackets, which was impressive in those temps. We also passed a US Forest Service Ranger near Fremont Saddle, who was asking everyone if they had enough water, and told us that her goal was, "No rescues today!" There were a number of people at the saddle, so we proceeded to the Lone Pine. Last time we went that way, there was a lot of fire damage. This time it was all green, and more pleasant. There was nobody else at the Lone Pine, so we stayed there for a while, then headed back along the Cave Trail, which is always fun. When we reached the steep drop, Gen chose to slide down the 8 foot chute, and I climbed down the rock face, while 2 people at the bottom observed us to determine which method was less likely to result in death. They chose to ascend the way I went down, and we watched them to make sure they were ok. We finished the loop and headed back to eat. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day, and the views were great as always. There were numerous people on Peralta Trail, and almost none on Cave trail. This loop is always a fun adventure.

Peralta trailhead was 75% full when I arrived at 7:15am. I attempted to make a beeline from the TH toilet to the Dons camp but should have just walked the road. There was an intermittent bootpath but it was pretty brushy; then it took me awhile to find a spot where I could cross over the wilderness boundary fence to get on lost goldmine. It was not the most efficient start!

I thought I had come down Carney Spring a few years ago but the trail didn't seem familiar so now I'm thinking I actually came down the next gully west. I remember a lot more brushy boulders. This trail was actually enjoyable. The whole loop was super fun and scenic, I love the pinnacles and rock formations up high in this part of the supes. Checked out the roost, had lunch at lone tree, checked out the cave, did some single-arm crab walking to get down the ridge...

I turned left on bluff spring and then right into lower barks. Almost immediately I ran out of water so I rolled the dice and scooped up some unfiltered stream water to sip (so far so good :) ) Lower barks was prettier than I expected with big rock shelves and nice pools. About 10 minutes from connecting to dutchman I was blissfully and obliviously rock-hopping down canyon and came within inches of stepping on a very angry rattlesnake. He reared back and rattled like crazy. I didn't slow down until I was 6-8 feet past him. I've seen a few rattlesnakes but can't remember ever being rattled at like that. I very nervously tiptoed the rest of the way downstream and was so relieved to get back on a trail!

Got started with Janelle just before 0700. Headed up Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle. Passed a few hikers along the way.

From the saddle, headed uphill and towards Robbers Roost. Faint trail in a few spots, but stayed mostly on track. Spent a few minutes at the roost, then headed back down to the saddle. Lots of people there by that point.

Headed out to the lone pine, got some pics, then went down Cave Trail. Saw about a dozen hikers on Cave Trail, if not more. Warm by this point, not much breeze. Finished up on Bluff Springs Trail, again, lots of hikers for that short stretch. Nice morning!

8:45am start, clockwise direction. It was cool enough with a nice breeze so I didn’t pay a penalty for my late start.

I had the trails to myself with the exception of a small group that I met at the saddle. I spent a fair amount of time chatting with them before heading out to the Weaver’s Needle overlook. Took the Cave and Bluff Spring trails back to the trailhead.

No flowers, no water, no leaves. Gorgeous morning. Great workout.

I love the cave trail!! I forgot how much! 😊😊😊 It was a perfect morning to be out hiking! 🙂

Started at 615a. Hiked up Peralta to Fremont saddle and then down Cave trail. Saw many people on Peralta, as expected (but all super friendly! 😊). Only saw 1 solo guy going up Cave by devil's slide, and a small group of maybe 5 people going down Cave in the distance.

A perfect day! 😍😊

I hadn't hiked the complete Cave Trail in over twenty years and forgot how nice it was to overlook Peralta Canyon, The Nosepicker Pinnacles and Zonerland. It was a breezy and peaceful morning in the shade of the Lone Pine. Not many good water sources remain and what's left is mostly getting algae skunky. Very warm again descending Bluff Springs to the trailhead.

My brother was in town--without his kids with him this time--so we had an opportunity to do something a little more challenging. I took some days off work and had hoped we'd be able to hike a long route in the Mazatzals, but he had to be back by mid-afternoon, so we chose something medium-length in the Superstitions, starting from Lost Goldmine Trailhead and heading for Robber's Roost.

On the way up Carney Springs, we took the short detour over to Shaka Cave. I noticed a few small pieces of turquoise that I didn't see last time...maybe some recent additions someone left behind. It was a humid morning, and we were drenched by the time we got to the first saddle on the steep ascent up Carney Springs. I hadn't hiked that stretch in at least two years, and the Carney sign at the top has been upgraded slightly since I was last there.

We had Robber's Roost to ourselves, which was an improvement from my last visit when there was a loud group of 10+ there at the same time. There were some puddles in the roost and a deeper pool in the lower room, and the Boy Scout graffiti on the walls seemed more prominent than I remembered. Someone had also placed a register in there in 2021, which had plenty of entries, but not many HAZ names that I saw. One of the top lines someone wrote in the register: "We came, we robbed, we roosted." :)

From there, we headed for Fremont Saddle and stopped by the surfboard rock and the gunsight. On the early part of the Cave Trail, we caught up two people ahead of us, but they turned off toward Lone Pine. We made our way over to Peralta Cave but didn't stay too long because gnats swarmed whenever we weren't moving.

We connected with Bluff Springs, and there were only four cars in the Peralta lot when we passed through...one of the benefits of hiking on a random Thursday morning. When we got back to Lost Goldmine, we were finished long before we needed to be home, so we drove over to the Wave Cave parking lot to add that as a second hike. It's one of those spots that I usually try to avoid because of the annoying crowds, but I hoped that on a weekday and with temperatures heading for the mid-90s, it wouldn't be too bad.

I was disappointed we didn't have more time to do a longer hike, but I always enjoy this loop. This was only the second time my brother hiked in the Superstitions, and this route includes a lot of great scenery in a relatively short distance. We only saw those two people, and more impressively, we made it from Lost Goldmine up Carney Springs without anyone asking for directions to the Wave Cave.
