Quick morning hike in the supes! 😁☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ Saw 2 rattlesnakes and a covey of quail in the last half mile. 😁😁🥰🥰🐍🐍💚💚 Few people out on the trail, but the heat is really culling the amount. There were maybe 5ish cars each at the horse lot and first Water TH. There were way more people at crosscut TH.

There are a lot of bees at the main big campsite by the wash in the hackberry spring area, and also just past the area where the trail crosses the wash before heading uphill. We saw one lone camper and their pup.

Hike with grandpa & boys! Started from Horse Lot, took Dutchman to FW trailhead, then up and around Garden Valley. Lots of burn damage starting along Second Water trail. Took a little detour in the creek to check out a potential water hole (it was bone dry) before climbing up to the valley, which was devastated by the fire. Circled around down to Hackberry Spring where we found the cutest little fish swimming around. Fire damage along First Water creek, tho a few camping sites near the spring were spared. Then back to the parking lot via the usual way. Good outing :)

A morning stroll to Garden Valley to look for artifacts revealed by the fire. I spotted a ruin I didn't know was there and several broken grind stones. Hiked up a side canyon that flows from Black Mesa to Second Water trail. Nice cool temperatures all morning.

Quick hike to hackberry springs. Garden Mesa is sad. Hackberry springs area is slightly better, with some unburned areas.

First Water lot had lots of people, but didn't see too many people on the trail until later. As we drove out, there were lots of people in every parking area on first Water road. Glad we went earlier! Gorgeous weather!

Mountain Man DarthStiller invited me to hike an easy one in the Supes. He wanted to try out a different route to get up to the Garden Valley plateau. We met up at the Horse Lot about 6am and hiked down what was posted as "the Dutchman Trail" off First Water Road. No cars in either lot when we started out.

We made the northern turn off from the Second Water Trail and started looking for the mystery route. It was easy to find and we started hiking up. The trail is very defined and easy to follow. It got a little steep towards the plateau, but not bad at all.

From there we made it up to the Arch. After a little exploring and a couple of pictures, we made our way back to the loop trail and started back towards the Second Water Trail.

We made a figure 8 loop and hiked back up the Loop trail to the ranch and up the ranch road.

Chris wanted to get in another mile or two, so we started out on a trail from the horse lot along one of the many trail in the area. After about 3/4 of a mile, the heat was starting up and we turned around.

I have done the Garden Valley/Hackberry Loop many, many times, it was awesome finding a new way to get up there. I have seen that trail from the arch, but I thought it just want back to the the Second Water Trail. Now I know, I can take the "Kiriluk KrossKut" to make it up there in the future.

Met Denny & Wally at First Water at 0500. Driving thru AJ at 0430 is an interesting experience, btw. Headed out on Dutchman and Second Water to Garden Valley. Shade the whole way. Garden Valley is a golden sea of foxtails, one spark and that place is going up in flames.

Made our way to Hackberry. The spring is yuck, but plenty of water in the creek after that point. Easy to keep the feet dry, but enough water for nice pics. Didn’t get much sunlight until the last mile or so. Nice early morning workout loop. Saw one other hiker who started at the same time as us. A pleasant surprise of rain showers on part of my drive back home, and at my house, including some thunder. Always good to see Denny & Wally again, thanks for the invitation!

Wally, Linda and I got out for a leg stretcher in the Supes! We got an early start and were in the shade for the first 4 miles. Finished before it got to warm. Pretty dry out there in the valley. The spring looked a little yucky. There was more water in the creek then I thought there would be. That water looked a lot better then the spring water! We saw some tadpoles in the creek water and Linda spotted one frog with a tail. It was nice to get a little hiking in the Supes! Thanks for the early hike Wally and Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!

My object was to try to get 12 miles in today. So I left the 1st water trailhead at 6:50, out the Dutchman's and up Black Mesa. When I got around to Second Water I knew I was needing a few more miles so I took the Garden Valley trail. I don't know what the saddle's name is where the trail splits. There is a northern leg that loops around the north side of the hill 2430 on a topo and a southern leg. I took the southern leg down to the unknown named creek that joins into 1st water creek. Then up past Hackberry Spring to the northern leg of the Hackberry tail and back around to Second Water trail and to the 1st water trailhead. Well I beat my 12 mile goal.

Not a lot of people on the trail but I met 4 really nice people. A woman out for a few day backpack, we walked and talked until out paths separated. A couple in Garden Valley from Mesa. And joined a guy hiking from 1st Water Creek to just about Second Water trail. These made the day even more enjoyable.

South Mountain is into wildflowers more than the Supes are. But there were still some really nice blooms. A few patches of Desert Chicory, some beautiful Lupin, the Desert Paintbrush really stood out, and some huge fields of what I believe is Purple Mat.

Great weather, great people mixed with time to be alone and a couple cottontails. Oh yes, and one red-wing blackbird. A great way to spend most of a day!

After parking at the main First Water Trailhead, I started on the Dutchman's Trail and soon turned off the trail, heading north along First Water Creek. The creek was flowing nicely, and the sounds of water and singing birds were wonderful. Went past First Water Ranch and turned east on an unmarked, well-worn horse trail that goes on up to Garden Valley.

I've walked around here many times and found a lot of interesting things - pieces of pottery, mortars, bedrock metates, cupules, and small caves. And I'm always amazed at the enormous chollas.

Today I was hoping to find some petroglyphs. I've never hiked up Hackberry Mesa, which borders Garden Valley to the north. The large basalt rocks on top seemed like good candidates. I hiked up and checked hundreds of rocks on high points of the eastern half, but I didn't find a single one.

Went back down the mesa to the valley and noticed a couple of painted potsherds, which are always nice to see and photograph. I spooked a jackrabbit, and it took off across the green grass-covered desert floor. Stopped to visit some mortars and bedrock metates that I had seen before, and then I headed back.

It's always a great day in the Superstitions.

8 million cars in the area given our late start. We originally planned on doing canyon of the water falls from praying hands plus treasure loop or massacre falls. Since all those Trailheads were full, we headed out to first Water Trailhead. We lucked out and took a spot of someone leaving the entirely full lot (there was room at the horae lot when we passed by). We decided to do the hackberry Springs loop as my out of town friend wanted no elevation gain.

There were quite a few people on the trail, as expected, but not too bad. There was water everywhere... Glorousness!! 😁😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Yay, water! So much water! Flowing, in large deep pools... Happy desert! 😁😁❤️❤️ The water was expected given all the rain, but still it's so nice to see.

Lots of backpackers going out, and lots of tents around garden Mesa.

We had a quick snack in the hackberry springs, then headed through the canyon back to the first Water ranch area/junction with Dutchman tail.

A fantastic hike with amazing weather! :)

Jason called me and asked if I wanted to squeeze in a quick hike on Thanksgiving Eve. I was slow at work and said, "sure".

Garden Valley Loop seemed like a great choice for a quick hike, and we met at First Water Trailhead. The lot was mostly empty as we headed out. The weather was perfect.

What I have noticed while starting off on this one (and other hikes starting from this trailhead) is the grass. Anywhere that suffered from the fires in the past years is now turning into a grassland. The native cacti have been roasted beyond repair and what has come back to replace those is grass and other nasty plants like catclaw and a reddish weird looking ground cover that is everywhere these days.

The trail is in good shape, in spite of the 3'-6' tall Serengeti-like grass everywhere. It is also extremely dry out there as well. Usually not a good combo. One unfortunate lightning strike or careless idiot's campfire and we could see some more massive burns out here.

It's not all doom and gloom out there, as this little loop (and the extended Hackberry Springs Loop) are still a nice little hike. We stopped by the arch for the great views.

We got in our hiking fix and finished up quickly for a return home in a reasonable time.

We came across a group of lady backpackers heading out to the wilderness and returned to a virtually empty parking lot. I am guessing that will be a different reality in the coming days.

Let's all do a Raindance and pray to the sky Gods for some big -time precipitation soon. We need some gully-washers to hit this area, big time.

Thanks for the invite, Jason. And, Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Beautiful rainy weather this morning resulted in great shifting clouds during the hike! ❤️ A bit muddy on garden Mesa resulting in shoes weighing more than they should due to attached mud! Extra workout! 🤣

Lots of boyscouts out today. In general a lot of people around, but who can blame them? Such a beautiful area!

The purpose of this hike was to get a moonrise photo with the Arch. Started out from Weavers Needle Vista Point trailhead.

Pictures turned out pretty good.

Photos are Geocoded if you want to try next time the moon is positioned here.

Start from the Weavers Needle Vista Viewpoint and hook into the Garden Valley loop. One of our favorite hikes, nice and short, and easy to get to. Saw a Pyrrhuloxia on this hike, wasn't expecting that!

Late morning start with Anna and Sarah. Trailheads packed, so we started from Horse Lot and did the clockwise loop. Plenty of water flowing through the Hackberry box canyon.

Starting from the First Water trailhead, we hiked north on the Second Water Trail to the lush Garden Valley. The First Water Creek bed crossing was flowing as expected, but we were able to cross without getting wet. We continued north east on the marshy Hackberry Spring Trail, then dropped down to Hackberry Spring. The north end of First Water Creek was flowing with several deep pools. We continued south along the bedrock pools of the creek, eventually returning back to the Second Water Trail, then the trailhead. This was a beautiful 5.8 mile loop, and we didn't even get wet!

The First Water Trailhead parking lot was full at 10am, with several vehicles driving in circles waiting for spots, but the nearby Hackberry Springs lot was almost empty. We parked at the Hackberry Springs lot and ended up walking along a well-traveled wash, until it intersected with the Hackberry Springs Trail, which we followed to the Second Water Trail, then looped back to the start. The creeks had mild-moderate flow. There were six creek crossings total, all of which were easily traversed on rocks. The northern part of the loop was pretty marshy, and one of us sunk pretty deep into the mud at one point. There were some nice views, including Garden Valley, the Ridgeline, and Weaver's Needle. There were a few patches of wildflowers. There were a lot of people out; we encountered at least 10 other groups. There wasn't much overall elevation gain. It started out chilly, but got warm (>70°) pretty quickly when the sun emerged from the clouds. We finished in time to make it to the White Sox - Dodgers Spring Training game. Overall it was nice, not particularly memorable.
