One of my usual workout loops. Got started around 0715. Very muggy. Very little breeze. Headed up Lost Ranch Mine, which has occasional shade. Most of the time, I didn’t know if I was crying from the misery, or if it was just sweat pouring down my face. Muddy in a few places.

Went up to Goat Hill, but the summit was swarmed by thousands of flying ant looking bugs. Turned around immediately. Continued east on National, then down Gila/Pyramid. Crossed paths with JJ near the top of Pyramid. Had a few patches of shade from clouds on the descent, which was quite nice.

I joined Chumley and trekkin_gecko for a morning hike on the side of SoMo I never visit. This was my first time starting from Bursera and all new trails for me other than National. We stopped by the Lost Ranch ruins, then made the steep climb up to National and over to Goat Hill before looping back on Pyramid/Gila. Warm but not crazy hot by the time we finished, and it was a nice way to start the day and to see a different part of South Mountain. And great to once again trek with the gecko and get chummy with Chumley.

Finally got away from the house for a hike. Started from Bursera TH before 0800. Up Lost Ranch Mine, then east on National to Goat Hill. Very breezy, which I liked. Too much sunlight, which I didn’t like. From the top of Goat Hill, I dropped off the east side and went over to the chupacabra cave. No monsters today.

Once back on National, I continued east, then down Gila/Pyramid. Chatted with a friendly Canadian couple for a while. The husband had worked in the petroleum industry, which I picked up on pretty quickly, so we had a nice conversation about midstream and downstream operations.

I have been thinking of doing this hike for a couple years. Good winter hike.
Up Lost Ranch Ruins, down Lost Ranch Mine, up Lost Mine, down Ruins, up Lost Ranch Mine, east to Goat Hill, down and up Ranger, and down Lost Mine.
Reminded me of the old days when I hiked Ruins regularly.
Only a few people on the trails. Bursera trees are leafing out in anticipation of rain! Good day. :)

Had clouds for the first 2/3 of the hike, which was nice; then full sun for the final couple miles, which was awful. Crossed paths with @juanjaimeiii and @gummo as I was nearing the trailhead.

Kelly wanted to check out this loop with a little trail she hadn't done before. I had not hiked west on Gila past Bursera in a few years. Some rerouting of the trail has been done. The Gila is in much better shape than the last time I hiked it.
We got started at first light going clockwise. Nice and quiet as we only encountered a handful of people until near the trailhead. Good views of the Estrellas.

Made a loop of Gila-National-Goat Hill-Gila/Pyramid. Trails were in good shape. Very dry out there. Despite the parking lot being mostly empty at both the start and finish, the trails were surprisingly busy. Ran into several people I know, which slowed me down in a few places. Saw one woman in thigh high platform boots—very strange. Cool and breezy to start, but warmed up a lot.

Did the loop clockwise. Not too hot until the last four miles. Decent enough breeze most of the way. Saw a few other hikers, but not many. I’m guessing a good 10-20% of the saguaros in the park have died in the last five years. The west end of Bursera looks like a saguaro graveyard. Lots of toppled ocotillo in the stretch of National just west of Goat Hill.
