Started off a week long trip at the North Rim with my wife, eventually meeting up with my Dad, two brothers and the Desperados to finish off the week camping. Completed this mellow loop solo on the seventh day. Beautiful canyon!

We arrived on the north rim ahead of a planned backpacking trip with plenty of time for an afternoon hike before settling in for the night, so we opted to take this nice easy 2500 aeg stroll just to get our legs warmed up for the next day.

We knew we'd be fighting daylight so we kept a good pace down the hill. Some patches of snow remained which made for a nice contrast with the autumn colors which were more abundant than expected.

We reached the bottom and turned up on the North Canyon Trail. After a few hundred yards we encountered a picturesque running stream. Since I hadn't read anything about this hike ahead of time, this was a great surprise and really made the hike more special. The trail gradually got steeper and climbed up past the spring through a really beautiful forest of white pine and aspen on a hillside covered in snow.

After regaining most of the elevation we had dropped, we reached the AZT. The sun had set and the temperature plummeted fast. A beautiful moon rose over the painted desert as we finished the loop. The thermometer dropped to 34 within minutes of being back in the truck as we headed toward a night of camping at Swamp Point.

This is a solid loop and the springs and creek at the upper end of the North Canyon Trail are a real treat to hike along.

I had aspirations of a third summit on my last day on the north rim, but I was beat up and this area had left a great impression on me two days before, so it was not a hard decision to opt for this pleasant and scenic loop vs another hot sufferfest below the rim. I also had the ulterior motive of taking another look for my hat that I inexplicably lost on the North Canyon Trail on my first day up on the north rim.

I found the scenery and the loop in general to be spectacular. Apart from a little locust on the East Rim Trail, the trails were all in immaculate shape. The perennial section of North Canyon is a nice little gem and you can’t beat the hiking along that section of the AZT.

I did not find my hat, which I found odd. I have been wearing a hat religiously hiking for several years now and have never lost one. This will certainly go down as one of the Canyon´s great mysteries, right up there with the disappearance of the Hydes.

Started out at the East Rim viewpoint/AZT parking area. Toilets and a short paved path to the rim. A couple very serene miles on the AZT until it crosses North Canyon trail.

The descent starts easy, trail seems in good condition, so I was hopeful. Once I hit a set of steep switchbacks down the Coconino, the trail started getting choked by brambles, vines, and all sorts of unfriendly plants.

When I got below the springs, some stinging nettles joined the fray. Shorts were a bad idea, I suppose.

Hit the creek crossing (allegedly there is a footbridge? I must've missed it) and it was still flowing... But in the quarter mile between the crossing and the East Rim junction, the flow abruptly stopped.

I headed down canyon another mile and a half or so, everything was dry but there is still a lot of nice vegetation.

Went back up East Rim, which contains one of the steepest half miles I've found in AZ. It was a bear, and got really overgrown. It was nice and shaded until the top of the Coconino, which helped a bit.

I'd definitely like to check out the rest of the canyon, maybe as a point-to-point.

Fine loop, short but steep, with great views along the rim, thick forest below and a very short creek. Overgrown, long pants recommended.

After hiking Old Bright Angel Trail the previous day we wanted something short so I found this loop while looking at day hike options in the area. Starting from East Rim trailhead we dropped off the rim on good trail down steep switchbacks. It was a little brushy at times but otherwise in great shape. Decent views on the way down of North Canyon which was our next target. About 1.9 miles to the North Canyon junction and we were in dense trees of spruce and fir. Starting up North Canyon Trail it was also in great shape and at first the creek was dry but soon water appeared. Several times the trail was right next to the flowing creek so water was readily available. It was a very pleasant hike along North Canyon with the lush forest and flowing creek. Eventually the trail starts to gain elevation quickly as it reaches the top. There is a series of steep switchbacks near the top as it approaches the Arizona Trail junction.

Reaching the Arizona Trail junction we were back on the rim. It was 2 miles back to East Rim but it's an easy stroll on great trail with excellent rim views and we stopped at one of them for a break. Done with our break it was a fast retrun to East Rim trail head. Great hike to finish off the weekend!

From the East Rim Viewpoint, dropped down ER#7 and continued down on NC#4. Near the mouth of North Canyon, turned south on a mix of cross country and abandoned dirt tracks headed towards South Canyon trail, with the intermittent rocky ridges of the Cockscombs on my left. Up SC#6 to the rim, hopped on my mountain bike (stashed the night before) and rode west on FR610 a few miles to the AZT40 crossing, stashed the bike again and hiked NOBO back to the start.

Only water on AZT40 was in a small scuzzy tank next to Sourdough Well.

For our last day, since we got such a late start, we ended up driving to the East Rim with Clyde and some of the other ABCers to take a look-see around that area. We left the others at Hwy 67 and went accross the road to the Rainbow Rim area to check out some of the Lookouts. So we headed west on Hwy 22 to the far viewpoint via 506 and 214. It had been raining on the North Rim off and on for the last several days so we did encounter some mud puddles but never had to engage the 4WD. For the most part, the roads were in good condition; some were in excellent condition. We encountered more traffic than we thot we would whether it be other cars at the THs or campers with trailers and such.

Figuring out where the best viewpoint was a little tricky at Parissawampitts as we walked down and down straight out from the TH. I told Ambika I really didn't want to go down anymore so we headed back up. We saw that the trail went to the SE so we headed that way and finally came upon THE view. This was my first ever view into this part of the Canyon so it was a lot to absorb and comprehend. It was totally cool though  .

We had a snack break in the car before proceeding to the next viewpoint. We thot we would take a short cut on the 250 but after going down and in, it looked a bit precarious so Ambika thot we better not since no one new we were up here. So, if anyone goes up in that area and takes the 250, a road report would be nice as each of the viewpoints is below the 250. If you could use the 250, it saves the trouble of having to get back to the 206 each time.

We decided to skip Fence Point and headed to Locust Point. Our next stop would be the Timps. At the intersection you had a choice and we went with Timp first and then headed for North Timp. All of the viewpoints had their own beauty and magnificence to offer. Unfortunately, shooting good pics was hard due to poor light at this time of day.

This trail looks like it would be fun to hike as it goes in and out of the ponderosa and aspen with occasional walks along the rim. There are several drainages you have to walk/drive around to get to the next viewpoint. The entire trail is 18 miles. I know there are several of you out there that could knock this out in no time and still have time for a couple brews, dinner and cookies :) at Jacob Lake before heading home. Altho, I think camping over nite would be the best option as it looks like there are some great camp spots up there.

During our drive we did see lots of deer and a bushy coyote. The drive itself is beautiful as well as you drive through the shade of ponderosas and aspens.... LOTS of them.

Here are some movies of the East Rim and 4 Lookout Points from the Rainbow Rim: http://youtu.be/_yiHYI3tRHY

Here are driving directions per the Kaibab Natl Forest. Please note the starting point for these lookout points is FR 206:
Go 26.5 miles south of Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center on AZ 67, turn right on FR 22 for 10.5 miles to FR 206.
Turn left and continue on FR 206 for 3.5 miles and turn right on FR 214 and follow it for 8 miles to Parissawampitts Viewpoint.
Fence: Continue on FR 206 for an additional 1.5 miles to the FR 271, turn right for .1 mile to FR 294, continue on FR 294 for .1 to FR 293 and follow it to the trailhead in about 8 miles.
Locust: Follow FR 294 for about 8 miles to the trailhead.
North Timp: From the junction of FR 206 and 271, follow FR 271 for 5 miles to FR 271A, turn right and follow FR 271A for 3 miles. When you come back to 271, it's only 3 miles to Timp from there.
Timp: From the junction of FR 206 and 271, follow FR 271 for 8 miles to the trailhead. When you come back to 271, it's only 3 miles to North Timp from there.

From any of the viewpoints, you can see the Esplanade, along with Powell Plateau, Tapeats Amphitheater, Surprise Valley. And don't forget, the AZT is around here someplace :-k .

jj needed to knock out an AZT segment. I figured it was a good opportunity to wander around the North Rim in prime season! The catch being a three hour window and so many options.

First I headed over and checked out the bitumen pitch path to East Rim Trail #7 I discovered hiking the AZT(shout out to Denny!). It is a short 0.2mi stroll to excellent views down North Canyon. #7 intrigues, once again it will have to wait.

Next up, wait a minute. Did I mention the weather. A perfect sixty degrees, puffy clouds, late afternoon, autumn, ever so gentle slight breeze... breathe. Opps got carried away, no breeze.

Next up another gander at Bright Angel Point Trail. Hands down the best views to effort ratio. I'm sure many shrug it off due to the crowds. People fascinate me so I enjoy the added element. Besides you can always create your own hike too.

With a little bit of time left I drove down Fuller Canyon a bit to check it out. Time was up so I setup our cache for Rim to Rim to Rim the next day.

We drove up on Friday and camped a little north of E Rim Viewpoint. I think the famous AZTers were nearby on Friday but didn't get to see 'em.

On Saturday we went to the entrance station and hiked back to camp on a couple of miles of #39 and about 8 miles of #40. We took a couple of side trips including the lookout (didn't go up :scared: ;) ). I really enjoyed this section with the mix of forest and meadows. Rounded out the day with some great burgers, sides and barley pop.

Did this quick trip down and back solo. Busted this out quick, since I left my pack on the top with Frick. Nice water at the bottom. Trail a little rough in a couple of spots but ok. This trail ends into Trail #4 at the bottom near the creek.

This was the first time we have been to the North Rim area. We took it easy by staying at the lodge which was a great place to stay. We only had one full day to hit as many trails as possible. We needed to find some easier trails than we would have normally have taken due to a recent knee operation my wife had and were looking for something to help get it back into hiking shape. In all we hit 4 different trails, Bright Angel Point, Ken Patrick, Widfross and East Rim View Point. East Rim view point didn't offer much. It did view towards the "start" of the canyon, but we didn't spend much time there. Ken Patrick at Imperial Point was nice. It stayed along the rim with great views along the way. There was some burned out areas from the fire in 2000, but the re-growth was doing well. The trail was over grown in some areas but not too bad. Wish we could have gone farther, but this was our first major trail of the day and wanted to get to the next hike. The next one we hit was Widfross. This was a neat trail and geared towards the Weekend Hiker from the nearby lodge. It had nice views also. There was also a set of Points of Interest along the way. You can pick up a map at the trail head that describes the various spots. Again we wished we could have gone farther, but some clouds coming in did look a little threatening so we turned around. This trail is about 5+ miles one way to the point. Bright Angel Point, we probably went up and down this quarter mile trail a good 10 to 12 times during our stay. The trail head was just outside our cabin. So every time there was a good opportunity to take some pics I was running up and down this trail. All in all, as they say, it was a great trip and wished we could have stayed one more day. Can't wait to get back here soon.
