Park gates open automatically @ 5am for the summer. I pulled through the exit as someone left but it didn't really save me that much time. Started hiking just after 5am. Clockwise is the only way to do this old favorite - knock out Mule Deer and the climb on Goat Camp first, then enjoy the gradual decline of Mesquite for a couple hours. Had to keep the pace up to beat the heat on this bluebird day. Also packed extra, extra water and a jacket for extra weight.

It got super warm going up Goat Camp, no breeze at all during the steepest section. Only real break for the day was a few minutes on the ridge/Goat Camp mile 3. Smooth sailing along the final GC miles and down Mesquite. Pumpkin sweet and breezy. Good amount of people out closer to the trailhead - mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians. Saw about 10 whiptails per mile.

Good to be back on these trails. It's been a while!

Chose White Tanks over Estrella due to easy access. Started off the morning in low to mid 40s. Nice and chilly. Recently bought an electric hand warmer that was worth all $20, modern problem, modern solution. Found water at what I will call Goat Camp Spring. (About 3000 ft in the south canyon) I am surprised it does not show up on any maps. Plenty of water when I last visited in June of 2003 and slight trickle of water on this hike. Surprised to see a Tamarisk Tree growing just above the spring, wondered how it got there. Found the dense vegetation on the north slopes of the canyon to be Jojoba Plant? Nice to see the tall Ironwoods all leafed out due to the Sept/Oct rains. Past 3 or 4 people on the trail. More than I expected on a Monday. Had lunch camp in the canyon just above the dry creek crossing where I found deer droppings. Saw a coyote above me. Wild donkey scat at the spring? Enjoyed being in the shade most of the day in the upper canyon area. Better than a day at work in the city.

It has been a long time for me. This was a very well organized and run event in the White Tanks. Very fun route and picture perfect day. We took off in small waves and i ran by myself the whole time.

felt good and pushed as hard as i could all day. Really enjoyed it out there

Took a day off for hiking. With the potential storm moving into the valley I wanted to get an early start. Wanted something relatively close to home with a little teeth. Got to the White Tanks around 6:30am. Did this loop going clockwise starting from the Mule Deer TH. Took this to South trail and then over to Goat Camp. Goat Camp can be a challenging trail due to two serious climbs. The first one is the worst, but also the more scenic of the two. Fairly aggressive with its elevation gain. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this trail so I was looking forward to, but unfortunately my claves starting tightening up near the top of this first climb. Very annoying. From then on I felt I needed to be mindful with how I stepped (especially on the uphill parts) to minimize the impact of the incline on my calves. Good news the next section is relatively mild before the last major climb. This second climb is not as long or engaging as the first climb. Much more rocky than I remember it. Once you make it to the top of this second climb it is pretty much all flat or downhill from there. A blessing for my calves. Some ins and outs as the trail follows the contours of the mountains. Some nice views to the north as I finished the second in and out....could see snow on the distant mountains. Thought briefly of doing the bigger loop, involving Ford Canyon, but with my calves talking to me I felt it was more prudent to go with the shorter loop. Most of the people I encountered was as I descended Mesquite. Saw about 30 hikers and two trail runners :) , 24 of which were on the descent. Great day to be out. At the start skies were blue above (once the sun rose) with clouds off to the east. Had some high clouds half way through, but nothing threatening. Wildlife was minimal...saw 7 rabbits and....a wolf :o . How, you may ask do I know I saw a wolf? It’s owner told me....an Irish Wolfhound. The dog was a size of a small pony....HUGE! And luckily very friendly. Cool loop even with the unhappy calves.

We thought the time would be good for wildflowers, but there wasn't alot going on yet. It does appear the brittle bush are going, so I expect the Ford canyon may be good now. We did find some patches of flowers here and there. Hike overall was good. Once you get over the initial push up Goat canyon its pretty level walking, with great scenic views, almost alpine like, without the pines :) .

Loop included the following hikes for a 13.7 mile loop
1. Goat Camp
2. Mesquite Canyon
3. Mule Deer
4. Bajada

We got a nice early start, so didn't really run into anyone until well into the Mesquite section of the hike.

I saw that more sections of the Maricopa Trail have been built and decided to go hike part of it. When I was at this park earlier this month I saw a junction with the Maricopa Trail that heads north. I decided to start from the South Trail, take that to the Mule Deer Trail and head south this time.

There was a lot of fog in the morning in the shallow valley just outside the park. On the drive in, in the dark, I went through it. The visibility was very bad, I had to put the fog lights on and drive very slowly with no other traffic on the road. By the time I hit the trail, there was sufficient daylight to not cause any visibility issues hiking, but it did give some dramatic scenery during dawn.

The trail is marked very well with the MT markers, especially near any junctions with dirt roads. Some sections of the trail are along existing jeep roads, but most of it is actually a separately built single track. Sometimes the single track just parallels a road, but it does meander away after a while.

I was planning to hike a little further to Missouri where the online maps show an "access point", which is different from a trailhead, although I'm not sure why. However, there is a lot of construction going on for what looks to be another subdivision in the area, so I decided to head back.

Spotted the Goodyear blimp and some fighters from Luke AFB in the sky. also had some nice views of the snow on the mountains to the north. The Estrellas had a cloud bank along their ridgeline all day. The clouds faded as the morning progressed, but never went away completely.

Got on the trail right at 6am. Started from the middle of the Bajada, where the Bajada crosses the road (by the bathrooms). Going CCW, this was an ideal starting place for this loop. First, I saw a couple of deer about 50 yards from where I parked. I'm not used to being rewarded so quickly :) . Secondly, the first .5 miles is flat or even slightly downhill which is a nice way to start when you are trying to get your jogging feet under, which I always am and seems harder to do all the time. :( Then I tackled "Mule Deer Hill" with its minor elevation is a nice precursor to Mesquite Trail. Happy to say I was able to make to Goat Camp jogging. That climb always takes it out of me, but I was able to jog another mile or so before the tank went empty. Got startled by hikers twice coming down the trail. When I'm jogging uphill I tend to keep my head down (so as not to become discouraged) and twice I came upon hikers without realizing they were there. Almost fell into a cactus the second time. Really like the back section of Goat Camp, it offers some nice views to the north and west AND its relatively flat. Nice to jog on if you have any gas I left in the tank. The Goat Camp was badly eroded around mile marker 3. The last climb just before you turn to the Radio Summit was destroyed! Feet had a rough day today. I had 4 stubs, and 3 trips, but luckily no falls...but my toes ](*,) . Saw about 20 hikers all told, a little over half of them before reaching the Goat Camp. Wildlife was cool. Besides the deer, saw chipmunks, a rabbit, squirrel, a hawk of some kind and my first centipede! Though it looked as if the poor guy was on his last leg. He was inert,in the middle of the trail when I came across him.

I guess autopilot did most of the work this time. Had to break out the headlamp on the last mile of Mesquite - the full moon helped, too.
Only saw one group of people during the first 8 miles. Not bad for a Saturday. Starting after 3pm makes all the difference!

Saw a few poppies along the first mile of Goat Camp. "Extremely isolated" is a better description.

Great weather. Had some light sprinkles higher up on Goat Camp, but only for 30 seconds or so. Felt a little warm towards the end when there wasn't a breeze.

The trailhead was vacant as we started the early morning hike. Susie and I were startled, to say the least, by a small heard of mule deer pounding through the desert. The beauty of the canyon was mesmerizing, the sand of the dry bed later in the hike and the gradual climb in the mid day sun - combined for a super hike.

Bajada - Goat Camp - Mesquite - Mule Deer - Bajada

I ditched the daypack for a light rucksack and traded my hat for some sunscreen so it was a really comfortable outing. I heard a bunch of gunshots while I was heading up Goat Camp. I took a minute near the 2nd mile mark to call the park and let them know. Uneventful aside from that.

Putting some mileage in this morning in preparation for an upcoming Rim to Rim trip, my daughter and I linked up the near entirety of four different trails at the White Tanks. Starting at the South trail we trekked a big loop along most of Goat Camp trail, down the Mesquite Trail and then back to the beginning via the Mule Deer trail for a total of 15.2 miles With temperatures a little lower than normal for this time of year and an early start it was an excellent day to be hiking.

Started off a little after 6am from the Goat Camp TH. Went in on the Goat Camp, but made a right on Bajada which took me to the Mule Deer which took me to the Mesquite which I took up to the Goat Camp which took me back to the TH. jogged the first 4 miles until I started getting elevation on the Mesquite and then walked the rest. I didn't see anyone until the Mesquite, where I encountered about 15 people and then only 3 people on the back section. Saw a multitude of lizards and heard twice that many. Saw my first snake of the year while on trail (not a rattler). Weather wasn't too bad with a breeze, but the wind was infrequent at best.

I planned on doing a 6 mile out-n-back on Goat Camp, but the weather convinced me to keep going. I did the math and figured I'd wrap up this loop just as it was getting dark (spot on, if I do say so myself). There was a lively breeze and some very light sprinkles sprinkled throughout the hike.

I passed 4 deer along Mesquite once again. They seem to really like that big valley, especially during the early evening. Not far from area 7, a woman coming up the trail warned me of a rattler just around the bend. I slowed my pace, stuck to the far side of the trail, and I still didn't see it. It gave me a brief buzz as soon as I was ahead of it. That must have been an invite for pictures because it didn't move at all, even as I backtracked for a better view. It had a black tail, so I think it would be safe to say it was a black-tailed? I'll upload a picture just to be sure. It's been a good two days for fauna. :)

I kept hoping someone would offer me a ride during the road walk back to Goat Camp TH, but no dice. Maybe I'll actually stick my thumb out next time.

Bajada - Goat Camp - wash/service road - Barry - Mesquite - first half of Waterfall Trail - south half of Black Rock - Mule Deer - Bajada

Headed up the wash just before mile 5 on GC for the first time - I think I'll stick to the Jeep trail on the ridge.
Last entry in the summit log(s) was from 10/28.
Saw a group of deer along the Jeep trail. They headed into Slick Rock Canyon. The myriad of game trails on satellite imagery suggest they like to hang out around there. It's on the list/was considered today, but... :-k
Good weather, hardly anyone on the trails (except Waterfall, of course), good day. Might even skip the ibuprofen tonight.
Longest hike of the year so far.

Started the morning going up Goat Trail with my husky for an overnight camp. Made it to where the spring is the first night. As the map says, the uphill rocky part can be a challenge, but very fun. I saw one of those big freaky centipedes that almost bit my husky, I saw the tail end scurry under a rock, so he wasn't feeling like a photo op. When I came to where the spring was, I found I did not look far enough off the trail(I later found out from one of the ladies that works in the Admin office). But it's there, and it's never dry apparently. Anyways, a very nice loop, great for an overnighter, and nice groomed trails once you make it up the first rocky part. Just make sure to watch for those big dang centipedes. ;)
