I decided to head up towards Flag and Williams and visit 4 Fire Lookouts: Woody Mountain; Turkey Butte; Summit Mountain; and Round Mountain.

Woody Mountain
I started and ended this hike at the Rogers Lake Natural Area. I too the Two Spot Trail to the Gold Digger Trail, and then took forest roads up to the summit. This was a very enjoyable hike through a nice forest.

Once on top of the mountain, I went to the Lookout Tower. The tower is 46' high with a 7X& metal cab. The first lookout on Woody Mountain was a tree stand from 1910-1921; it was replaced by a wood tower from 1922-1936, when the current tower was built. I climbed the stairs on the tower up to the trap door, which was padlocked shut.

After checking out the tower, I went NE to an obvious highpoint and located the benchmark.

Turkey Butte
After hiking Woody Mountain I drove over to Turkey Butte. Turkey Butte is just outside of the Rafael Fire closure area.

I saw several mule deer about 1/4 mile away from where I parked to go to the tower. Due to COVID, signs there prohibited going up into the tower. I walked up 2 of the 3 flights of stairs and took a few pictures before heading back down.

I enjoyed the short hike to the tower, and this is worth checking out if you happen to be in the area.

Summit Mountain
After leaving Turkey Butte, I drove to Williams and then made my way to the Summit Mountain Trail. This was a nice hike up to the summit of Summit, although the trail is a bit overgrown in places. There is an overlook at the top that has some nice views. After enjoying the views I walked about 100 yards NE of the communication towers to what I think is the highpoint of Summit Mountain.

There was never a lookout structure on Summit Mountain; instead there was a stand built in a ponderosa pine tree in 1916. At that time it was common to build a platform in a prominent tree that someone could get in and lookout for fires. In 1992 surviving trees that still had much of their lookout function were added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Summit Mountain Tree was one of these.

I had the GPS coordinates for where the lookout tree was supposed to be, but I forgot to load the waypoint on my GPS. I did not see the tree so I may have to go back out there sometime to see if I can locate it.

Views at the top were nice, and I am happy that I did the hike.

Round Mountain
I was looking forward to seeing the Round Mountain Lookout. It was originally constructed in 1934 on Saddle Mountain 8880 in the Coconino Forest, and was moved to Round Mountain in 1960. When it was moved, a side door was installed to replace the customary trap door.

After leaving Summit Mountain, I drove south on County Road 73 to FR 354, and then to FR 129 and FR 138. FR's 129 and 138 were really rocky and rutted out in places. I was on these roads for 5 miles or so, and it took me close to 30 minutes to get to FR138A, where I parked and walked up to the summit.

However, when I go to the Round Mountain summit there was no tower there. There was not even a sign that a tower was ever there. I walked around a bit and the only thing that I saw were 3 grave markers.

When I got back home I called the Williams Ranger District to fine out what happened to the tower, and was told by the Ranger answering the phone that the tower was not being used so it was taken down. She said that I was the 3rd person that had called inquiring about the tower.

Summary
I really enjoyed the Woody Mountain hike. Turkey Butte and Summit Mountain were short hikes, but I was glad that I did them. However, Round Mountain is one and done for me. It was a bit of rough ride to get there, and with the tower being dismantled, there is not much to see there.

Stats for these hikes are below. The total above is the sum of these 4.

Woody Mountain: 5.3 miles with an AEG of 984 feet
Turkey Butte: 0.8 miles with an AEG of 213 feet
Summit Mountain: 2.7 miles with an AEG of 686 feet
Round Mountain: 1.8 miles with an AEG of 351 feet

This trail was recommissioned 20 years ago. Today it is once again returning to the forest. It is a nice trail and some good views at the top.

I decided to get a quick trip up this old mountain trail. It's in pretty good shape. It was well constructed but clearly doesn't get much use.

None of the posted haz routes seemed to go to the highest point, so I headed that way. The trail didn't seem to continue though there were some signs of use. At the viewpoint I found an old post set in concrete and a downed tree that had once had a ladder attached to it. I assume the ladder and post were related to the lookout point referenced on the trailhead sign, but don't know for sure.

In any case, this was much more interesting than the antenna farm and road where the actual trail ends! A totally worthwhile little hike if you're in the area anyway!

Better Late than Never I guess...

I did 9 Hikes on this Trip, but I decided to just do the one Photoset with the Camping, Driving and Highlights from 8 Short Hikes and a longer one, that turned just a Tad Epic in the last 4 Miles... I went up on Thursday, and hit a couple of Areas in Flag before getting to Camp after Dark.... I headed for the Barn on Sunday, although from Camp, I think it took me about 3 1/2 Hours to get to Flag because of some pretty Sweet Storm and Sunset Action along the Way....

Chumley always puts on a Great Event and his Attention to Detail is Unrivaled. Nonot's Fires with Chumley's Wood Contributions did not Disappoint. It was Great to see Old Friends again and Meet some of the Newer HAZ Faces out there... Thanks for Organizing this Todd...

Awesome Weekend with Good People and Sweet Hikes and some Amazing Wildlife along the Way... What did the Fox say? "Na Na, Nana Na! You didn't get a Photo of me!" ](*,)

Nice short hike with my daughter. Some pretty cool hedgehog cacti were blooming on the summit of Summit. Also the lupine was blooming along the trail.

Nice day for a hike. The Gambel Oaks are in full leaf now, and there are a lot more flowers. Truthfully, it looks more like early monsoon season, rather than early June.

The view from the top was stupendous, as always. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,or at least, to Prescott.

Finally, a nice warm day for hiking.

Trying out yet another pair of shoes. This time I think I've found a winner! I just got them. REI carries them but not in Arizona. I tried on a pair owned by my cousin, and straight away ordered some. They are the Altra Superior Zero Drop shoes, a kind of minimalist shoe. The toe box is very square, which I need. They are narrow enough, and can also be cinched-up with the lacing to accommodate my narrow, low volume foot. My problem has partially been with almost all shoes being way too pointy but also too wide. I have included a photo of the shoes in the photoset.

My feet did not burn when hiking down the hill! I think this is because my third toe actually was not cramming into the toes. Pointy toe boxes cramp my third toe, I think.

I ought to order another pair or two just in case they change them.

This is a perfect little "workout" trail. It's not too far from town, if you happen to live in Williams, but it feels like you are way out in the wilderness (until you get to the top, that is, and see the microwave towers.) However, on the top, not too close to the towers, is a very nice perch from which you can see the entire planet. Or at least, a whole lot of territory! Great view!!

I've just moved back to the area for summer seasonal employment. This year I will be able to get by on part-time, so I requested it. Plus, I've got a pair of shoes and a pair of boots that seem to fit well, unlike last summer. So, I'm hoping to get out more.

It's a bit early for the greenery and wildflowers, but the March storm got everything wet, and it was a very warm winter. This week's forecast for scattered thunderstorms should help keep things damp, and hopefully mean that Bill Williams Mountain won't have to be closed in June, as it was last year.

I rarely hike this late in the day. It was kind of fun, but very shadowed on the way down the hill. Nice views this time of day. Nobody on the trail, but the ATVers are camping around the bottom of the mountain, and they like to make all kinds of noise. Thankfully they must have gone back to their RVs to eat their burgers soon after I started hiking. They don't ride this trail, but there is an ATV area nearby. Not breaking any laws, but not learning anything about nature, either. I don't get it at all.

A pleasant hike with a great view. This is one I'll do again, since it is close by and starts uphill quickly. Great views from the top. Mingus Mountain, Bill Williams Mountain, Secret Mountain, etc.

I did not zero out my GPS properly, so I turned it off. So I'll use the default mileage and AEG.

A big storm was brewing as we drove back to Williams. It poured and hailed and thundered as I drove through town. I sure hope they will open up Bill Williams Mountain soon. It has been closed for some time now due to fire danger.

I wouldn't go out of my way for this hike. I was camping and fishing with my daughter at White Horse Lake so I went hiking while she slept in. This is a nice exercise trail, well engineered and maintained. The brush needed some clipping but not bad. Nice views at the top. There might be a way to bushwhack over to the Lookout and Towers but I wasn't in the mood and there were fish waiting to be caught.
