Was looking to check off one of my few remaining Superstition Wilderness trails, and realized I hadn't been to Miles Ranch in a few years, so I headed out to check out Rock Creek. Only vehicle in the Miles area was at the Paradise trailhead. Easy going until the Rock Creek/Bull Basin junction, where the Rock Creek trail took a little bit of finding (could've sworn there used to be a sign here, but perhaps I'm misremembering).

Once on the trail, it became more clear, and I think we only really got off track once or twice. The creek was dry in most areas, although there was a little trickle over the falls, and a few pools above it. There was also a short stretch a half mile or so upstream from there that also had a light trickle.

Past this point, I was a little perplexed to see some fresh footprints, and while I was mulling on this, a dog started barking at us. Turns out there were a couple guys camped up there for 5-6 days who had hiked in from the Sawtooth Ridge road, and they were as surprised to see anybody back there as we were. Amazingly, they hadn't even been down to the waterfall area; apparently they just liked chilling in that spot. To each his own.

Went another mile or so up, to where we started hitting burn area and brush, and headed back down. Pretty canyon, and I think it's worth hiking all the way up.

Back out to Miles TH, this time for a hike and hopes of finding a cave that I'd heard was in the area.

The hike starts out with a walk through some tall dry grasses through the meadow adjacent to the old barn before passing through a gate and wandering off into the woods on the Bull Basin Trail. After passing the rocked over resting place of the cowboy, we hit the junction with the decommissioned Rock Creek trail. The trail itself is in amazing shape and is well marked with cairns, the occasional flagging tape...and lots and lots of bear scat (along with other wildlife scat/spoor). I suspect we have the wildlife traffic to thank for the condition of the trail, which is predominantly brush free with the occasional small (and reasonably avoidable catclaw).

The hike is a pleasant walk along side the dry creekbed with the occasional log to hop over with plenty of leaves crunching underfoot. Our stops included a visit to the dry waterfall (will need to come back after a rain to see it flowing - based on the water staining, I imagine it would be quite beautiful), and the Y-Bar B corral and trough. Since the trail seemed to be in such good shape, we decided to continue onward and were surprised to find some water in the drainage (not moving, with a heavy film on top and plenty of bee and butterfly activity all around). The trail makes a turn and climbs (likely to avoid a dryfall) when a drainage comes in from the right (looking up canyon). The climb upwards affords beautiful views of the sawtooth ridge before the trail drops back down into the drainage. We continued on until the trail was set to start its climb to its terminus at FR650 where we heard plenty of OHV activity.

After a brief stop for a snack, we headed back the way we came without passing any other hikers (though our vehicle had been joined by another while we were out). Alas, the cave remains elusive - scrambled up to where I had coordinates, but failed to find anything other than a whole bunch of loose footing and rock that was really not suitable for climbing on safely. I foresee another visit to the area in my future 😊 and no, this isn't a trick to keep getting rides out to Miles TH 🤣

Another fantastic day out in a beautiful area of the Superstitions that has been spared from fires. The company was good too 😉

After refereeing a flag football tournament all day Saturday, I wanted an easier hike on Sunday so I could still get out before it gets too hot. I also had some intel on a cave I wanted to check out so headed up 287A to the Miles TH. No vehicles at Miles when we started around 8:30. We made our way through the grassy meadow and headed down the Bull Basin Trail. From there we made a right at the junction and headed up the Rock Creek Trail. The Rock Creek Trail has been decommissioned for over 20 years but is in pretty good shape as there is a well-carried trail the entire way. There are a couple of brushy spots but it's very minimal with the catclaw off trail. Made a stop at the completely dry waterfall (as expected) and continued. Our next stop was at the 105-year-old Y Bar B wood corral. Took a short break there and continued, going all the way except the last half mile when the trail started climbing to 650 before taking a break for lunch and heading back. Uneventful hike back as there was one vehicle at the TH, however, we did not see anyone all day. This is one of the few areas in the Superstitions that has not burned recently, it is a beautiful area lined with huge Arizona Cypress and Sycamore trees. On the drive out we stopped to look for a cave I had some info on. I know the general vicinity but we spent 45 minutes climbing and bushwhacking and were not able to find the entrance.

We wanted a fairly easy hike with not too many people and a decent waterfall. This one has been on my list. The trailhead can be reached with a regular sedan if you drive carefully. Occasional big loose rocks, 2 shallow water crossings, a number of divots in the road. There were a lot of wildflowers and other great views along the drive.

We arrived around 1335. The only other vehicle was a truck with a camper about 100 yards away. Temp was 80° with an intense sun. The West Pinto and Bull Basin trails were wide, flat, and easy for the first 1.4 miles. The creek had moderate flow and was very pleasant. We missed the turnoff to the Rock Creek Trail and went an extra 300 yards on the Bull Basin Trail before we discovered our error and went back. The Rock Creek Trail was much rockier but pretty straightforward, with numerous creek crossings and no thorny encounters. The crossings were easy - our feet stayed dry until we jumped in at the waterfall. There were a few small cascades and a lot of bird sounds. We encountered our first rattlesnake of 2023 lying on a rock. It seemed pretty sluggish and barely rattled. We stopped at the big waterfall for about 1 hour to eat and play in the water. The waterfall had mild-moderate flow and the pool below it ranged from 4 to 24 inches deep. We had gotten pretty toasty so the cold water felt good. Eventually the group decided to head back. It was a fun jaunt back to the car.

Overall a nice, warm, pleasant afternoon. Thanks so much to everyone who put in the time and effort to clear this trail; I heard it was rough in the past.

While the hoards of crowds were at the typical Superstition waterfall locations, I made my way out to the smaller and lesser known Rock Creek Falls. Made my way up 287A to Miles Ranch, where there were no other cars in sight. Road is in decent condition, however there are a good amount of smaller rock that have fallen onto the road. Started off through the ranch meadow, made a left up Bull Basin and finally to the Rock Creek Trail. For a trail that has been decommissioned for quite sometime it is in great shape, in fact it's in better shape then some of the 'maintained' trails. With all of the rain lately the creek was raging which made the dozen or so water crossing more of a challenge. Initially I tried to keep my feet dry, but after falling during the second crossing, that went out the window and walked through it at that point. As I got closer to the waterfall, the noise from it really picked it and once I got to it, I knew why, it was insane! I've been to this spot a half dozen times and this is the most water I've ever seen come down it. It's not tall by any means (20 feet) but it's pretty wide and still impressive. Continued on to the 100 year old Y Bar B corral and trough, took a break and headed back. Back at the TH 8-10 jeeps filled with snowbirds decided they were going to have a party at the ranch, which ruined the quietness, good thing it was time to head out. 🤬 Saw no other hikers all day, weather was a bit cool and breezy but felt nice. Another great day in the Supes!

I have always liked the Miles area after a nice precipitation event. There are three worthwhile little waterfalls that can be accessed from there and today we visited two of them.

Our first stop of the day was a chilly stop at the mostly shaded Paradise Trail to visit the little slab waterfall that forms in the trailside drainage about a half mile in on the trail. It was a scenic little hike into the falls. The creek had a light flow as did the falls and the trail was in excellent condition for the portion we hiked.

Our second stop of the day was the falls on Rock Creek. Although, I should say, "my" second stop of the day, as Katie set up a hammock just over a mile in to wait at for me with the pups, while I hiked up to the falls. We had Blanco with us who is pretty limited these days and she had a nice day in the Supes yesterday, so she let me get in the little extra hiking to see the falls. There was a nice flow at the falls and stunning hike along that creek in general. After my return and some leisure, we returned the way we hiked in, with some detours to play in the water along the way. We only ran into two hunters all day.

A nice quiet Sunday at Miles with a lot of water flowing and a lot of fun had by the pups.

Took advantage of the "cooler" day today to get another Superstition hike in. Headed out east to my favorite trailhead in the wilderness, Miles TH. Headed out from the ranch and headed up the Bull Basin trail at the first junction; then found the carins for Rock Creek about a mile up. Rock Creek trail has been decommissioned for 20 years, however, it is in better shape then some of the maintained trails out there. Stopped at the waterfall, which was bone dry for a quick break and continued on. I've hike this trail numerous times but have missed the 100+ year old Y Bar B corral and water trough each time. Fortunately I was able to finally find it today. The corral and water trough were built in 1909 to trap the wild burros that used to roam this portion of the Superstitions. Crazy to think about wild donkeys being in this area, but apparently a good amount were trapped. Had lunch at the corral and headed back. Had to take a slight detour at one point as a snake decided to lay across the trail and not move lol. Took my time getting back as it started to warm up pretty good. Saw a ton of bear scat and tracks and a couple deer on the way out and that was it, no other cars at the TH, which is perfect.

This is the best decommissioned trail I've ever seen! Seriously, I think this trail is in better shape than some of the maintained trails! Very easy to follow. Not much cat's claw at all. Marked by a plethora of cairns (big, huge ones at that!) and starting at the rock creek turnoff, the trail is also marked by blue tape.

We pulled out of Gilbert at about 815a and made it to the Pinto Mine turnoff from US60 in about an hour. It then took us about 35 minutes to drive to the Miles TH. We were in a subaru, so not true 4WD or super high clearance, but it did the job. There were some ugly looking deep ruts here and there, and some rocky areas, but we managed to get there okay. In fact, while I would have been happier in a Jeep Wrangler, I would not have wanted to be in an F150 given how narrow the road is past the iron bridge. Signs are posted, so you are definitely warned. Single lane road, beware! Primitive unmaintained road ahead! Steep, mountainous curves ahead! You definitely cannot say you haven't been warned!! 🤣😂 I guess that is why the first TH (Pinto Creek TH) to Haunted Canyon is full of cars, and there were no cars at any of the other THs! I actually think the section of road just before the Pinto Creek TH is worse than anything past the iron bridge. There were sketchy parts, but doable. The hands-down worst section came at the very end, past the sign which helpfully reads "end of 279" but then the road continues for a very short length to the Miles TH. But you know you are almost there. You can see the corral. We had to park by the corral entrance and walk the remaining few steps to the TH due to a gigantic puddle that spanned road. There was no possibility of avoiding it in the car, so we figured it was better to walk the last bit.

This trail is super easy to our turn around point which was the 1909 corral described in the book Superstition Wilderness Trails East. I have been wanting to hike Rock Creek for a while, and I was not disappointed! This area is so beautiful, just as I expected based on hiking in the haunted canyon area. The hike is not physically challenging, with little elevation gain. It was enjoyable to mosey along in the trees with good company on a sunny day. ❤️

The waterfall was a mere drip, but still interesting to observe. The corral is half a mile down and relatively easy to spot. I took way points for both on my route. I had read on one of the previous triplogs that the way got tougher after the water fall, but this was not the case today. Smooth sailing the entire way to the corral!

There was ice on the puddle-pond when we started hiking, but it was melted by our return. There was still iced-over puddles in the shadows by the water fall on our way back to the car.

Saw lots of birds at the puddle-pond, about 30 of them! Quite a few looked like robins. And on the drive out, we saw a couple of stellars jays. During the hike, I saw a few lizards and a lone chipmunk.

There was no one at the Miles TH upon our arrival, and no one there when we returned. Just as we were about to drive away, an off road golf cart showed up. I've never seen such a thing before. I asked if they passed anyone on the drive in, as I wanted to know what we were in for on the drive out. They said they saw no one, and indeed driving back we saw no one until just before the Iron Bridge and the perilous ways are coming signs. There was a single quad and a side by side.

After our hike, we checked out the barn structure which is full of bullet holes. Especially odd is the face high on the metal barn made from shooting. Strange.

I have never been to the Miles TH before today, and I was surprised at how big the area is with so much space for camping.

Such a beautiful area!! I can't wait to go back, but since I am an off road wuss, I will have to recover for a bit before going on that single lane road with nasty dropoffs! ;O

Headed out to the old Kennedy Ranch to check out the Rock Creek waterfall, hoping it had a nice flow after the rain we got and to finish off a small section that I hadn't done yet. 287A is getting a lot "bumpier" since the last rain. Chilly 28 degree start with snow still on the ground in patches. West Pinto had a nice flow, however, Rock Creek was bone dry. The further up the trail I went the deeper the snow. I will say one thing, boulder hopping in the snow adds a lot more complexity and makes it much more difficult to stay on the trail. Really slowed down my pace. Light flow at the waterfall 🙁 with some nice pools up on top of it. Continued on to finish the missing section and tried to find the old Y Bar corral, but turns it I was about a quarter mile away from it. Headed back down and had lunch at the waterfall and back down I went. I did not see another person and I was the only vehicle at the TH all day, which is a bit surprising. Came across a couple small doe on the way down and that was it for the day. Hopefully we will get some additional rain, when I was at the falls last year it had more water then I have ever seen. This trail is no longer a wide open highway that it was early last year when I last did it. The catclaw is making a strong comeback, especially in a couple of areas. Pants are a must.

Hike w/ kiddos. Early start had the kids begging for a sweater at the trailhead. Turned out to be a good idea, as the canyon held onto the cool temps for a few hours, and I was the fool shivering in a short-sleeve for the first half of the hike. Anyways, West Pinto was great (only needed to help the 3yo on a few steep sections), Bull Basin was just fun (so many creek crossings), and Rock Creek was okay (recent trail maintenance is great, but the tread is still a WIP, and it was tough going for the kids). Between the creek crossings, rough trail, clouds of crane flies & mosquitos, and early start, my kids were a lot to handle, so I decided to turn around early and skip the falls. Return trip was a lot more fun, especially after I discovered the simple joy of tossing manzanita berries at kids and blaming it on the squirrels. 3yo caught me mid-toss so I had to bribe her to secrecy with skittles.

Between Haunted Canyon back in March and this trip, I'm starting to realize just how heckin' amazing the Eastern Supes are, and I think a long backpack may be necessary in the near future.

A trip out to the Miles Ranch area again. I hiked up the old Rock Creek trail with thoughts going off trail. The Rock Creek trail has seen a lot of work. The trail is marked with cairns/blue ribbons and cleared about six feet wide. The trail work stopped after about 4 miles. After hiking an open trail with shade and running water the overgrown section loss it's appeal so I turned back and enjoyed a nice easy stroll back. I only saw two other hikers on my way out and a few squirrels along the way. If you want to hike Rock Creek trail, now it the time.

so get this, from Miles you walk a good bit until the fire damage. oak flat was spared. after that, the "easy to follow, well maintained" spencer spring trail becomes a faint, washed out mess. no worries, trust Wally! did not have much trouble navigating the path, although i cant for my kingdom figure out why there is a "teaser" hill just before the big climb. nothing in the creek requires a 200' gain, then drop, before you exit. huh. anyway, spencer is thrashed. top of the hill and on to the road to drop down into Rock. now, i've been known to get excited for off trail hikes in the E. supes, and this delivered. this upper section of Rock is about as useless as a "trail" as a third big toe. so carry on, try not to get killed via pushwhacking. once in the creek proper, it's easiest just to stay the course. get your Jordans on, cause you'll need Air to get over the approximatley 1,642 felled trees. i camped after the guesstimation of 9.25 miles from Kennedy ranch. above freezing, but not by much. so i anticipate a good 4.5 miles back to the car as "off trail" the whole way. after all, it was pretty slow going. then voila! a pink ribbon, a couple cairns here and there, and for the continuing 4 miles the trail was a breeze.. crossing the creek about a dozen times, but never hard to find. thank you to whomever has been out there with a saw! maybe they can carry on the length of the trail along the upper section where it needs maintenance the most.
spencer is a hell hole. it will take a dozen-strong crew for a month to make that one fun again. Rock, however, is a gem and just what i needed in the E supes. that's some dang nice country, there. NO MORE FIRES, PLEASE!

Original plan was to finally conquer Pinto Peak, but our recent rains spoiled those plans. We started down West Pinto Creek but a mile down the trail, the only clear path ahead was crossing the creek. It was 28 degrees and I didn't feel like spending the rest of the 8 miles in wet, cold boots. Pinto is really flowing right now and it is super muddy and hard to even see the bottom to determine the depth. Headed back to the trail head and decided to wander up what I thought was a decommissioned Rock Creek Trail. To my surprise, someone has really done some nice work on this trail and, even though the signage for the trail is gone, the trail is well cairned and brush free up to a little past the falls. Shortly before the old corral, the trail literally disappears back into the brush. I back tracked several times to see if I missed a creek crossing or portage up and around the canyon....poof, the trail is gone. Nonetheless, beautiful hike along a flowing Rock Creek and nice to see the falls with the significant flow.

Paradise was bone dry, so we gave Rock Creek a chance. It turned out to be a great decision.

The Rock Creek Trail has been cleared and it was cruiser to the falls. There is a little acacia coming back in spots, but someone did a tremendous amount of work on this trail. It’s hard to believe the FS maintained a trail that has been decommissioned for decades, but someone cleared it and cleared it well. Maybe some ground crews were using the trail to maneuver along the Woodbury Fire perimeter, or maybe some hunters did it. Either way the trail is pretty nice, making the falls destination and the hike to them an eastern Supes gem now. Especially, considering what was lost out there.

With the recent rains, decided to head out to Miles to check out Rock Creek Falls. Headed down Bull Basin making a quick stop at the unknown cowboy grave before heading up Rock Creek. For a trail that has been decommissioned for nearly 20 years, it is in great shape! Is is pretty easy to follow the majority of the time and well cairn ed for the couple of times you need them. Very small area of newly growing cat-claw but nothing horrible. Water was flowing in Rock Creek and the falls were roaring. I hiked to the falls earlier this year from the 650 side and the trail was difficult to follow a good amount of the time and overgrown, not the case coming in from Miles.More bear scat on the trail then I have seen anywhere in the Superstitions. Took a brief side detour about a half mile up Pinto to the burn area where this week's rains have further washed out the area.

I've always loved the eastern part of the Superstition wilderness. For a long time, the area just west of the Pinto Valley Mine was this big unexplored area with a decent amount of trails...so I decided I should check it out. The idea here was to do a loop from Mile Ranch TH, with a couple options to cut it short depending on how it went.

It seems a bit silly to drive down a dirt road just to turn around and run back up it... But including the road was the only way to make it a loop. As far as roads go, it wasn't too bad. Didn't see any cars. There is one really long switchback; decided to try and cut this out by going up a draw. Probably save half a mile and lost 5-10 minutes. Worth it. Lots of trees up at the road's summit; different than most of AZ's forest, but it could've been cypress. The different in biomes between the north-facing and south-facing slopes in this area was profound and notable.

By the time we got back down to the vicinity of Haunted Canyon TH, the gigantic eyesore of a mine loomed overhead. A constant reminder of the permanent damage we do to our ecosystem so some global corporations can make money. But I digress. Haunted Canyon really is beautiful, once you get away from the mines. Possibly the most pleasant riparian environment in the whole wilderness, and the creek had water too.

Five miles or so from the TH, we hit the wide, scenic valley wherein Tony Ranch is situated. It's like a more overgrown version of Reavis Ranch, but the cabin is still intact.

After a little break at the cabin, we headed back down the valley and resumed heading up Haunted Canyon trail. Ran into a family of three who didn't even know the cabin existed. A half mile or so past the turnoff to the ranch, the vegetation turns to high desert scrub. After the Bull Basin junction, the trail gets overgrown, and steeper and steeper as you climb. This part of the loop was not super exciting, but the views were nice enough, and it's kinda necessary.

The descent after the saddle was a little chunky. After leaving the bottom of the drainage and contouring to the north, we hit a nice fun set of switchbacks back down into the forest. The rest of the loop down to Miles Ranch was gorgeous.

Spent a few minutes exploring the structures at Miles Ranch while we were there. This is an area I would definitely return to (and might be the only part of the eastern Superstitions that didn't get charred).

I'd been out of commission for a couple of weeks, but decided to join in on this loop since it didn't look like the AEG would be too bad. Started on West Pinto, then up Bull Basin. We turned onto what used to be Rock Creek trail about 50-100' past the cowboy grave. The trail was discernible in places, there was brush to push through, but nothing too thorny. Walking in the creek bed tended to be the easiest most of the time though. There seemed to be a fair amount of water, considering it hasn't rained for a few weeks now. After leaving the creek bed, we took a snack break before heading up the steepest part of the ascent, through a cypress grove, before topping out on the road.

It was a quick two miles on the road to reach the top of Spencer Springs. The upper part of Spencer was rather steep and gravelly in places, but had been cleared of brush. Some nice views to the east while near the top of the trail. I managed to fall right at the bottom of the steep part, but luckily landed on a fair amount of padding. Took a lunch break in the creekbed under some trees, then continued to head downhill. The trail is clear the entire way, including through one short section of catclaw. There was a nice amount of water along Spencer as well.

Once we reached West Pinto, we had probably the best fall color of the day, and it was an easy walk back down to the trailhead. Other than some guys in a Polaris on the road at the top, and truck at the trailhead when we finished, we saw nobody else all day. Nice day, and good to see some new territory.

Rock Creek (cough)Trail #195
There is a hint of trail through brush and over fallen trees. We got in a few segments of trail along the creek. Typically opted for the easier creekbed. Duly noted in my 2014 triplog "The key is to go down". It's not terrible going up, just not enjoyable.

Creek to road was as memory served. There is a trail. Missing a turn or two is par for course. The cypress are holding proud.

Dropping my rating on this from 4 to 3 out of 5.

Spencer Spring Trail #275
Maintenance has transformed this likeable canyon trail into a brush free gem. Steep tread held my attention in the upper portions. Clear, light flow in the creek for stretches.

Synopsis
Up Spencer and down Rock Creek is my preference. Fab hike either way.
