A beautiful day to check out the Roost! The trail from Fremont back thru the hoodoos has sweet views all around and Weaver’s is a constant backdrop! Came back down to the saddle and went over to the lone pine then headed down Peralta.

The last time I hiked to Robbers Roost was in 2021 with Warren and his dog Stella. We did it again today. This time we hiked up Peralta, then from Fremont Saddle back to Robbers Roost. After exploring Robbers Roost we hiked back to Fremont Saddle then down the Cave trail and Bluff Springs to the trailhead.
There was a little bit of trickling water here and there, along with some blooming hedgehogs and ocotillo.
Great weather. Fun hike.

Since getting back into hiking, I've been reviewing old photos and notes and making lists of hikes I want to redo and places I want to see...I recalled really enjoying the weavers loop when I did it many years ago - though I did a slightly extended loop back then, tacking on a visit to the top of black top mesa.

Unlike that last time, I tacked on some new-to-me extras by way of a detour to lone pine and a visit to robbers roost. While I'd hoped to re-do that larger loop, it was evident after my detours that I was simply not moving fast enough to have the daylight for the extra miles.

The day started bright and early, with my hitting the trailhead right around sunrise. It was novel to drive down the dirt road without plumes of dust thanks to the previous day's rains. The trailhead had a surprising number of cars when I arrived (it looked well over 2/3 full). There were volunteers from a local hiking group and the USFS setting up near the trailhead and what appeared to be the local SAR team meeting up for some practice.

After signing in at the register and some brief chitchat with the volunteers, I headed off up the Peralta Trail. Thanks to the recent rains, footing in some places was a bit slick, eroding trust in my footwear. I've only had these shoes out on dry surfaces, but have worn previous generations of this model out in wet conditions with no issue, though admittedly, the type of rock involved was likely different (predominantly sandstones and limestones rather than the volcanic stuff so prevalent in the superstitions). I was pleasantly surprised at my steady ascent to Freemont saddle with breaks only for photos and I passed more people (4) than passed me (3) - and even so, I was glad that there wasn't much traffic that early. The trail was damp underfoot with the occasional pool of water - though as it climbed higher, a novel soundtrack of burbling water could be heard with confirmed flow in the drainage upon crossing. At the saddle, I stumbled across group of climbers camped out having a leisurely morning. After the requisite photo from the overlook, I headed off towards lone tree, and was pleasantly surprised to have it all to myself. I stopped for a few minutes to enjoy the solitude and the views of the snow covered mountains in the distance (while also noting a dusting of snow on the Superstition Ridgeline).

Knowing I had miles to cover, I turned back to find the traffic had increased significantly with several groups of people clustered at the saddle. I found my way up into the hoodoos, and headed towards the ridgeline and Robbers Roost. I found the trail to be well cairned and easy to follow, though I peeled off towards the chimney rather than staying on the main trail to approach the roost from northeast. With the recent rain, there was plenty of running and pooled water up on the ridge. I managed to find my way into the roost, and after some trial and error found my way to the entry chute. Within the roost, water was flowing down the split falls and on through the bowl. It looks like some folk descend the drainage as a technical canyoneering route as there are webbing slings evident. I had a brief look at the register, but didn't recognize any HAZ names - it seems like the area sees plenty of visitation and I had once again lucked out with my early start to have the area to enjoy in solitude.

After looking around for a bit, I headed back out to join the main trail, passing several people headed towards the roost on my way back towards Fremont Saddle, including a couple of folk who looked like they might be toting canyoning gear. Seems my timing was near perfect for my two planned detours for the day! As I was hiking back to rejoin the Peralta Trail, it was pretty clear that traffic had picked up as I could hear a steady stream of chatter floating up from the main path, and there were loads more visitors at the actual saddle. The climbers from before had finally packed up and started down canyon towards Weavers Needle just a few moments before I rejoined the main trail to follow in their footsteps with their chatter and hardware jangling for a soundtrack. When it became clear that I wasn't moving fast enough to lap them and stay far enough ahead, I stopped to let them gain some separation.

I was glad to be able to regain some semblance of solitude as I hiked onward - while I didn't catch anyone else headed in the same direction as I was, I think I passed just over a dozen folk headed in the opposite direction in various places along the loop, about 2/3rds of which were backpackers - 2 of the backpackers were on their way out and mentioned that they were from BC and had spent the previous day holed up at Charlebois with the thunderstorms, hail, and rain passing over. They were in good spirits, so I thanked them for bringing the rain to the desert 😆.

The loop itself has a very small section that looks like it was affected by the siphon fire (near the northern terminus of the peralta trail) - with all the moisture in the air, it smelled strongly of stale campfire when walking through the burn region. Otherwise, the flora all along the route seemed healthy with the mosses and resurrection plants recently rehydrated.

Views along the loop didn't disappoint with Weavers Needle featuring heavily. The disadvantage to doing the loop clockwise as I did (to give myself the best opportunity to having some solitude at Lone Tree and Robber's Roost) meant that I was climbing up Terrapin at the end of my day - I was warned that it was steep and loose....and sure enough, it was - though the footing wasn't too awful. I can never decide if I prefer going up or down Cardiac Hill - at the end of a long day, I was definitely taking my time with the big step downs. By the time I returned to the trailhead, many of the cars had cleared out, though I did spot a few people headed up Peralta when I was able to peer into the canyon from above.

It was a great day to be out, especially with the water pooling and flowing from the recent rains. Not sure how long it will all last, but it was such a nice change! I'm not sure which stats are right, HAZ disagrees with what my watch computed...one has more mileage, and the other has more AEG, either way, it was a fantastic all day affair.

Peralta trailhead was 75% full when I arrived at 7:15am. I attempted to make a beeline from the TH toilet to the Dons camp but should have just walked the road. There was an intermittent bootpath but it was pretty brushy; then it took me awhile to find a spot where I could cross over the wilderness boundary fence to get on lost goldmine. It was not the most efficient start!

I thought I had come down Carney Spring a few years ago but the trail didn't seem familiar so now I'm thinking I actually came down the next gully west. I remember a lot more brushy boulders. This trail was actually enjoyable. The whole loop was super fun and scenic, I love the pinnacles and rock formations up high in this part of the supes. Checked out the roost, had lunch at lone tree, checked out the cave, did some single-arm crab walking to get down the ridge...

I turned left on bluff spring and then right into lower barks. Almost immediately I ran out of water so I rolled the dice and scooped up some unfiltered stream water to sip (so far so good :) ) Lower barks was prettier than I expected with big rock shelves and nice pools. About 10 minutes from connecting to dutchman I was blissfully and obliviously rock-hopping down canyon and came within inches of stepping on a very angry rattlesnake. He reared back and rattled like crazy. I didn't slow down until I was 6-8 feet past him. I've seen a few rattlesnakes but can't remember ever being rattled at like that. I very nervously tiptoed the rest of the way downstream and was so relieved to get back on a trail!

Got started with Janelle just before 0700. Headed up Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle. Passed a few hikers along the way.

From the saddle, headed uphill and towards Robbers Roost. Faint trail in a few spots, but stayed mostly on track. Spent a few minutes at the roost, then headed back down to the saddle. Lots of people there by that point.

Headed out to the lone pine, got some pics, then went down Cave Trail. Saw about a dozen hikers on Cave Trail, if not more. Warm by this point, not much breeze. Finished up on Bluff Springs Trail, again, lots of hikers for that short stretch. Nice morning!

Very well cairned once you leave Freemont Saddle. Before we headed to RR we wanted to explore & find the bunny ears. ✅ Followed the cairns back to the slick rock where the trail descends to RR. Since I had been there several times before, no navigational tools used…just remembered the route to get to the roost. Just before we arrived a group of 21 had scrambled up the shute so we had the place to ourselves until 1 other couple of hikers arrived.

On Friday agreed to this outing which came from AT. Therefore you know it wasn't my idea. 😋 More vehicles at TH than when I did this 3 years ago. Start hike at 10:30. Guy in vehicle next to us was starting for 5057 at the same time.

All of the EG is within the first couple miles. When you reach the back side of the mtns, scan your horizons for small cairins. These are very helpful. As you venture further back there, the beauty is phenomenal.

Expect to see few people till you reach Peralta of course. Coming back later than most are there, we were able to appreciate this trail. My plans to go out afterwards were quickly dashed by a harrowing phone call. 😱

My weekly hike with Dave. He suggested Arnett Creek at Picketpost, I countered with this. He hasn't been up there for a few years and liked the idea.

0940 start with the hope that it might warm up a bit. We hiked up to Fremont Saddle to take the easier route to the Roost. Chatted with a big group of backpackers for 20 minutes or so (college students from Minnesota). We gave them some recommendations of popular campsites along their loop from FW (Dutchman to Peralta and back on Dutchman). Saw some kitty tracks in the snow at the saddle before we headed up top.

There was a fair amount of snow remaining on the east side of the ridge heading up. Ice in the shadows. Had lunch in the roost before heading NW to visit the Chimney. We talked briefly about heading down canyon to make a loop with the Carney Springs trail or picking up the Dacite Loop trail and coming down the steep drop above Fremont Saddle. We said nah to both. Instead, from the Chimney, we headed northeast and went up and over the ridge on what is now a fairly popular social trail to reconnect with our route up. It makes for a nice little lollipop loop from the roost.

Delightful hike on a cool, but gorgeous day. Bright blue sky, a wisp of a breeze, a bit chilly, but no complaints from me.

:y:
I took the classic route up the Carney Spring trail to West Boulder Saddle. I started at the Peralta TH at 0745, taking the road walk to Lost Goldmine trail and then up to the saddle. I always think I'm ready for that uphill grind. I took a break at the false saddle, then another at West Boulder Saddle before continuing on.

Once at the Roost, I took a break, signed the register that I never noticed before, marveled at the natural funnel shape and wondered how much water flows through here during a monsoon downpour. I wouldn't want to be in there.

When I reached Fremont Saddle, I met a group calling themselves the "Lady's Hiking Club." When they saw me descend from the hoodoos west of the saddle, they asked if there were more hiking opportunities up there. Yes, I told them, and proceeded with a short run down of my hike today, along with a few other hikes available from Fremont Saddle.

After taking yet another break, this time to eat something, I decided that taking the Cave Trail back would not work today. I was done with uphill stuff, so I took the Peralta Trail back to the trailhead.

The Carney Spring trail was brushy but not prickly. Same with the route from WB Saddle to the Roost. Shorts and T-shirts are fine. The Peralta Trail was recently brushed and is looking good.

Wonderful hike. Streaky clouds with a bright blue sky, nice breeze through most of the hike. Gorgeous!

My brother was in town--without his kids with him this time--so we had an opportunity to do something a little more challenging. I took some days off work and had hoped we'd be able to hike a long route in the Mazatzals, but he had to be back by mid-afternoon, so we chose something medium-length in the Superstitions, starting from Lost Goldmine Trailhead and heading for Robber's Roost.

On the way up Carney Springs, we took the short detour over to Shaka Cave. I noticed a few small pieces of turquoise that I didn't see last time...maybe some recent additions someone left behind. It was a humid morning, and we were drenched by the time we got to the first saddle on the steep ascent up Carney Springs. I hadn't hiked that stretch in at least two years, and the Carney sign at the top has been upgraded slightly since I was last there.

We had Robber's Roost to ourselves, which was an improvement from my last visit when there was a loud group of 10+ there at the same time. There were some puddles in the roost and a deeper pool in the lower room, and the Boy Scout graffiti on the walls seemed more prominent than I remembered. Someone had also placed a register in there in 2021, which had plenty of entries, but not many HAZ names that I saw. One of the top lines someone wrote in the register: "We came, we robbed, we roosted." :)

From there, we headed for Fremont Saddle and stopped by the surfboard rock and the gunsight. On the early part of the Cave Trail, we caught up two people ahead of us, but they turned off toward Lone Pine. We made our way over to Peralta Cave but didn't stay too long because gnats swarmed whenever we weren't moving.

We connected with Bluff Springs, and there were only four cars in the Peralta lot when we passed through...one of the benefits of hiking on a random Thursday morning. When we got back to Lost Goldmine, we were finished long before we needed to be home, so we drove over to the Wave Cave parking lot to add that as a second hike. It's one of those spots that I usually try to avoid because of the annoying crowds, but I hoped that on a weekday and with temperatures heading for the mid-90s, it wouldn't be too bad.

I was disappointed we didn't have more time to do a longer hike, but I always enjoy this loop. This was only the second time my brother hiked in the Superstitions, and this route includes a lot of great scenery in a relatively short distance. We only saw those two people, and more impressively, we made it from Lost Goldmine up Carney Springs without anyone asking for directions to the Wave Cave.

Arrived at the Lost Goldmine East Trailhead around 1600. It was overcast, 60-70°, with intermittent rain sprinkles.

The Carney Springs Trail was a nice climb with great views. The drainage at the top was flowing pretty well, over 12 inches deep at some parts. The route to Robber's Roost involved a lot of route finding, with intermittent use trails, a lot of off-trail hiking, and some scrambling. At one point I followed a series of cairns north, scrambling up to a ridgeline, but discovered that I was way off route, heading further from Robber's Roost, so I had to backtrack.

Robber's Roost is dope. Climbed down and hung out there for a minute. After that, it was nice to have a defined trail to Fremont Saddle. Cave Trail had some steep downclimbs which were pretty gnarly with the wet rocks, especially since it was somewhat dark at this point. Peralta Creek was flowing strongly. Overall fun loop with excellent views and a few rough parts. Will definitely do again, but need to start earlier.

Got started from a nearly empty Peralta under clouds and with cooler temps. Made our way up Peralta to the saddle, then up towards Robbers Roost. The route was a little overgrown but not too brushy for shorts. Took a break at the Roost, then retraced our steps back down. It got sunny for a while on our descent, but storm clouds were building by the time we finished. Very green out there. Had the trails all to ourselves today, which was nice. Poured rain on our drive out, parts of Peralta Road became a river. A sedan would have some rough spots with the current road condition. The Supes are Celina’s favorite place to hike, so she enjoyed seeing the Roost for the first time.

Since it snowed in the desert yesterday, I decided to do a repeat of a snowy desert hike from last year. Headed up Peralta, where I passed a few groups of hikers. Started seeing snow at about 1.30 miles. Just below the saddle, I ran into a good friend of mine who volunteers for Tonto NF, and chatted with him for a few minutes.

At the saddle, I headed up the use trail towards Robbers Roost. Snow covered most of the trail, and it was slick in places, but I mostly stayed on track. Quick stop at the Roost, then retraced my steps back to the saddle. I will say, the Salewa Mtn Trainers have excellent grip on wet rock; much better than my usual Salomons.

From there, I headed to the overlook, then down Cave Trail. All the rocks on Cave were dry, so it was easier than I was expecting. Finished up the loop on Bluff Springs trail.

Great day with the snow coating everything!

Pretty easy and well known hike up to Fremont Saddle, but beyond to Robber's Roost there was some times we got off the trail as it wasn't super well marked and there was some overgrowth. I went with HikeAZ, a Facebook group that had been there before from the Saddle. I haven't hiked it this way before as I only have done it from Carney Springs TH previously. Here is a link on FB that might give you more information and videos. https://www.facebook.com/GlenFullmer/po ... 6921115398

We departed from Peralta TH for this hike, instead of Carney like some. From Fremont Saddle, head up and left into the hoodoos - the trail is somewhat cairned and worn. When you get to the "gunslinger" rock, the trip to the roost is a somewhat free-for-all. Scramble down and to the right, using the map to get you to the general area. Amazing hidden gem! There are several ways into the roost, depending on your skill level, as well as a book inside to sign.

NOTE: if you take Peralta to the Roost, the trail from Fremont to the Roost is very exposed, so either take plenty of water or go on a cooler day. I'd love to take the Carney/Dacite route up next!

Hiked with Warren and his dog Stella doing a loop up Carney Springs to West Boulder Saddle, to Robbers Roost, to Fremont Saddle, and down on the Cave Trail. We started from the Lost Goldmine trailhead to make the road walk back from the Peralta TH shorter.
We got started pretty early to cool temps and no people. We would only see two people all morning at Fremont Saddle. Warren hadn't been to Robbers Roost before, so we checked out all the attractions. We even got Stella on the surf board.
Fun hike. Thanks for driving Warren. :)

The trail head is on a dirt road. A nice one with a lil washboarding. There's a good climb to get to the roost but the pay off is so worth it. Bring your route finding skills once you get to the top the app helps alot. Bring enough water for the day. I didn't see any water. This is an amazing hike don't miss it.
