Road Conditions: surprisingly smooth! A sedan could get there today, but it *is* dirt, so conditions can definitely change.

Early portions of the trail are cattle grazed and you may be serenaded by the sounds of annoyed cattle as you disturb their grazing.

The trail itself crosses areas that have seen significant fire damage though remains easy to follow thanks to well placed cairns. Trail conditions vary, though there are large sections that are some combination of loose, rocky, and off camber....enough so that my feet, knees, and ankles weren't happy with my decisions by the end of the day...then again, I tend to hike in trail runners so YMMV.

It was a beautiful day to be out, temps on the cool side (when we left the parking lot, temps were right at 32F) with a brisk breeze up on the ridge. Climbing up towards the junction with Two Bar Trail yields views of Two Bar Mountain, while looking back provides views of the rolling hills towards Roosevelt Lake (and great views of the lake in the distance as well).

Since we were in the area, we decided to pick up Two Bar Trail and have a look at the not too distant ruins. Some really large sections of stacked rock walls and pottery shards along with a gigantic boulder that looks like it's mooning you 😉 After enjoying the rest and the view, we retraced our tracks back to the car.

First time to Tule Trailhead! The road to trailhead is in amazing shape! A sedan could make it as of today.

The area is affected by fire, but as this is my first time to the area, I have no comparison. As always seems to be the case with fire areas, some areas are untouched while others are decimated. The severely burned areas look like a Martian landscape with lots of red rock and not much else.

We saw not a single person on the trail all day!! Amazing! I love that! There were no other cars at the trailhead upon arrival or departure.

We made good time to the junction with Two Bar and decided to continue on to see the nearby ruins. So impressive!

Lots and lots of cows on the grassy hillsides surrounding the corral in the ravine. Not too many on or near the trail. We only had to persuade a group of six to move off the trail for us. Cowpies are everywhere. Thankfully, the cows were left behind once we started up the steepest uphill section of Tule trail. I felt that it was fine going up, but going down the same way on the return was not as fun with the loose gravel making some areas slippery.

We were happy to reach the flat area after the main uphill stretch. The fire really devastated in this area, and the forest service cairn trailmarkers are very helpful in knowing where the trail is. The views from here are already stunning, though not as great as from the Two Bar trail by the junction with Tule.

We continued along the flat area for a nice change before it was back to up up up to the two bar junction. The ridge trail here is very burned, but there are beautiful views in every direction. The ridge is quite windy. I was thankful for my windbreaker jacket!

I noticed on our way down that someone left a huge amount of campsite trash on the flat area. Sigh. I took what I could with me for disposal, but apparently I need to start carrying a trash bag. There were probably 20 15oz water bottles in various states of fullness (and grossness) along with a thermos, bowl, ruined tarp, and ace bandage. :(. There is a corral here just off the trail that we didn't see on our way up, either. There is also a tank on the flat area, but it was completely dry. As expected, there was no water anywhere on the trail.

A beautiful day to be out hiking! It is so serene out in the Eastern supes. ❤️

Another fabulous foggy hike in the Supes! I think a collective desert sigh could be heard by anyone out on this day. It was a slow start messing with the rain gear, but the jacket and pants were necessary with the occasional wet burst and soaked vegetation. It was very muddy for a bit also. Pinyon Mountain had clouds racing across it when I was there. Apparently it was the 25th Supes summit for Jordyn with some pups and John10s was the most recent. I stopped for lunch past the Tule Tank, where a hunter passed in a side by side. Not thirty seconds after a very wet piggy emerged from the brush and trotted down the road. There's a weird track on my route where I followed it, trying unsuccessfully to get a pic, but it disappeared back into the chaparral. I'll need to go back sometime to finish off the southern section of the Two Bar Trail.

I haven't done much hiking in the eastern Superstitions, and this one looked like a good option before the summer heat arrives. This was a longer variation of the Tule Loop route, and we hiked clockwise from Tule Trailhead, which was empty as we got started. The first mile was relatively flat along Tule #122, then it was a steady climb for the next few miles. We had great views of Two Bar mountain for much of the hike, and Roosevelt became more visible as we gained elevation. I kept an eye out for the arch along Tule but didn't notice it until we were above it and past it...by the time we spotted it, it was tough to tell it was an arch from that angle.

There were plenty of wildflowers still blooming, especially along the last mile or two before the Tule/Two Bar intersection and again on the approach to Pinyon Mountain. After turning onto Two Bar, we gave up some of the elevation we'd gained before the trail started ascending again toward Pinyon. We passed one other hiker resting in the shade just south of the peak, and that was the only person we saw all day.

The off-trail portion up to the peak was straightforward...no major obstacles or sharp brush along the way. I found the azimuth mark on the way up, and the full length of Roosevelt Lake came into view along the ridge. There was a small register at the peak, placed in 2017 with a single sheet of paper inside...the only HAZ name I recognized was the most recent entry, Jordyn W. from last November.

[ youtube video ]

We ate lunch and enjoyed the 360° views from the summit while battling aggressive lady bugs, and we found the Pinyon benchmark and two reference marks before we started down the ridge east from the peak. The descent wasn't bad, either...a little more brush to dodge on that side, but not overly steep. We reconnected with the trail near an AZT gate and then hiked to Two Bar Trailhead and down FR 83. Long stretches of the road were in good shape, but a few spots were washed out and deeply rutted, so high clearance 4x4 is definitely needed to drive to that trailhead.

The last five miles went quickly on the jeep roads, though the final half mile was a little slower as we left the road to cut back to Tule TH. Not much in the way of unique wildlife today, but we did scatter a lot of cows near the windmill and Schoolhouse Tank at the end. I was happy with the choice of locations today and want to get back out to this area again soon...there's a lot more to see. Coincidentally, I went to Sheep Mountain in the Mazatzals last weekend, and I noticed the guide for Tule Loop was authored by GPS Joe.

We set up a somewhat involved morning shuttle for this one and hiked from the Tule trailhead to our vehicle that we parked about a mile before the Two Bar Ridge trailhead. We parked at an obvious pullout/campsite, just before the road gets steep and a little more attention getting. I had driven all the way to the trailhead years ago with my Xterra, but walking a mile downhill on the road at the end of our hike did not seem like that bad of an option and we didn’t mind being cautious. I am sure the 4Runner would have been fine though.

The hike from Tule up to Two Bar did not go too bad, but it was a bit of a workout at times, as I had remembered and it was a little warm for the pups, as there was not much breeze in the drainage used to gain the ridge. However, once we topped out so to speak, we were greeted with a great breeze that would keep us from getting too warm for most of the day. There was a little funky looking water in the tank near the top, we let the dogs lay in it to cool down, but tried to prevent them from drinking too much of it. We found a great campsite shortly after hitting Two Bar and took an extended break there in the shade. Two thru-hikers passed us as we recouped in the shade. The rest of Two Bar Ridge Trail to our next break spot went smooth. The trail is in maybe the best shape I have seen it in through there and to the trailhead as well. We took an extended break under some pinyons at the nice campsite before the final climb to the trailhead. The final little climb before you start traversing over to the trailhead did not go too bad, but it was a little warm at times and we did do one quick break for the dogs in the shade. Pretty much downhill from there to the trailhead and our car parked a mile below it on the road.

The wildflowers were pretty spectacular along the hike. Maybe one of the better desert blooms I have seen. Someone in our group who appreciates flowers more than me, said it was the most diverse display of desert flowers they had seen. It was warm on a few of the climbs, but the wind kept us cool on the ridge. I have a lot of nostalgia for this area, so it was really nice to get back to this little corner of the Supes. I am not sure how one’s expectations can be exceeded for an area they have already been to, but the hike and half loop exceeded my expectations.

One of the better desert blooms I have seen in awhile, no poppies, but tons of the usual suspects and some more I am not familiar with.

With a slim season & a lengthy drive, it had been 4 years since I had previously done this stand out hike. Conditions were right to lead a Meetup outing to this spot.

The drive is beautiful with sparse traffic. The dirt roads in are fairly tame. We saw a couple leave the trail just b4 we started, that was it ☺ Lake views begin b4 u hit the wilderness sign.

Trail can be a bit difficult to follow, stay alert. Bout half way in the trail veers right & next left. Then grows steeper. Keep pushing as the scenery & views get even better. Saw many cows near road on way out 🐄

It's back to Robert Hall again. It's been 2 years since I was up on Two Bar Mountain. The last time I was worn out from fighting the wind that day. I turned back because I thought the summit was another mile. Turned out to be just another 350 feet. I came back to hike that 350 feet. ](*,) Once at the trailhead I realized my camera was still on the kitchen table.
The phone took over...sort of. There were two Javelina hunters at the trailhead when I arrived. I started out in front and never saw them again. The temperature was 38 degrees but felt nice since there was no wind hiking up Tule trail. The breeze kicked up on Two Bar Ridge but felt good hiking in the sun. The off trail ridge hiking isn't bad but the rocks under the grass tip you back and forth just for fun. After locating the cairned trail on the mountain I followed it to Peak 5212. The trail continues on past the summit. I wonder where it leads. :-k My GPS maps shows 5212 as the summit. It's a cool area walking through the trees with hardly any wind and no one around. I've been to the high point on Two Bar Ridge near the Reavis Gap trail and back up on the mountain so I think I've finally got this one covered. One the trip back down the ridge to the trail I finally located the ruin. There are pot sherds galore in one area but I missed locating the source on the previous 3 trips through. The ruin but it's half buried strew about so no in good shape. I cruised back down in the breeze and didn't take my jacket off until the last few miles. Perfect conditions in the eastern Supes.

It was time for a little exploration. I wanted to start early but wasn't feeling it so I slept in another 30 minutes. I got to the Tule trailhead just after 7:30am. It was a balmy 27 degrees and I was glad the sun was out. The breeze was mild on the way up but punishing on Two Bar Ridge. The Tule trail is in decent shape. Its fairly easy to follow and the brush is growing back which adds to the views. This happens to be one of the better uphill climbs in the Superstitions. Once you get up on Two Bar Ridge you get to hike back down 900 feet if you keep going. I went down to the wash and decided to go off the rails on the crazy train or I mean off trail to look around again. The route was near the real Klondike Spring but I had gone up the wrong wash. The spring would wait for another day so it was back to the trail to find a lunch spot. The on trail ruin was a nice place to take a break and refuel. After enjoying the 900 foot climb back up to Two Bar Ridge it was an easy stroll back down the Tule trail. I saw three to six white-tailed deer along the way and two other hikers. Just another good day in the Supes.

I wanted to get out to the Superstitions one last time before the heat kicks me out. Headed out to the Reavis TH yesterday as usually very reliable source (has ties to the FS) told me it was reopened. Made the two hour drive only to find out the gate is still locked and closed at Apache Lake. Dam! On to plan B, Tule TH. I've been up on Two Bar Ridge a couple of times but I've never hiked Tule before. Tule is a 2,000 foot climb up to the top of Two Bar Ridge with some pretty steep and slippery spots near the top. Tons of cows at the start, but they thinned out further up. About half way up I started watching a storm build over the Sierra Ancha's, but it was far enough away not to worry about. Once I got to the dry tank the winds really picked up and by the time I got to Two Bar Ridge they were blowing enough where I couldn't wear a hat. The views up on the ridge are some of the best in the wilderness in my opinion as you can see both Apache and Roosevelt lakes. Hiked about a mile south on Two Bar Ridge, had lunch and started back down. About half way down the storm starting making its move towards me. Windy, dark but was fortunate to make it back to the truck with just a few sprinkles. Came across one AZT hiker up on the ridge and that was it for the day which is exactly the way I like it.

I was wanting to bag a peak today, and this had been on my radar screen for a while, so off I went.

I followed the route that @hikerdw did on this one, except that we went a bit off-trail up to the summit of Pinyon Peak.

We did a clockwise loop starting from the Tule TH: we went first on the Tule Canyon Trail, then the Two Bar Ridge Trail, and then some forest roads almost all the way back, then an easy off-trail to get back to the TH.

On the way up to the summit I channeled my inner @FLYING_FLIVER and located the elusive azimuth mark. At the summit we located the triangulation station, aka benchmark, and located 2 reference marks. But wait, there's more: we found some wires that appeared to have been used for a height of light.

I thought that the views at the summit were among the best in the Supes, and we hung around there for a while.

Most any vehicle could make the easy drive to the TH. I thought that the trails were all in really good shape and were easy to follow.

It was near perfect weather for a hike, and we did not encounter any other hikers on the trails.

I did not see water anywhere out there, so make sure you bring enough if you are hiking or backpacking in this area.

Checking older triplogs I discovered it had been over 6 years since I had boots on the ground on the Tule Canyon Trail so today was the day we corrected that lapse. Only a few campers seen along FR449 on the drive in, and we arrived to an empty trailhead. The stage was set for an outstanding day.

Overall Tule Canyon Trail is in great shape and is recovering nicely from the Woodbury Fire. During the tight climb up to the mesa is where you'll see the worse of the burn but there are still sections in that area that survived unscathed, a few pools of water remained in the drainage from the last storm. The walk along the mesa just before you hit Two Bar Ridge is beautiful, with more green than I recalled even prior to the fire. The trail here is very well marked and easy to hike. We did a little recon on the Two Bar Ridge Trail, had lunch, and then retraced our steps back to a still empty trailhead. Saw no others the entire day.

It was an outstanding day.

This was just a hike. No list to check, no bill to fit and no zip to fizz. I hiked up the Tule trail to see what the burn did there. Again there are spots untouched and areas gutted. This area should come back fairly well as most of the saguaros are okay and even after the rains two weeks ago the trail was still there easy to follow. Two Bar trail was okay but did suffer some damage on the climb up heading toward the Reavis Gap trail. The trails are rough with a many rocks but it would take a lot of work to clean them up. The Reavis Gap trail is worse than when I was there a few weeks ago but mostly below the AZT section. I hiked a short section of the Campaign trail but the flash floods have taken a heavy toll. I kicked up a few coveys of quail, had 4 fighters fly over me pretty low and had a bee circle me twice and sting me in the face. I was tired so I barely felt the bee sting and it didn't even swell up. I did find the stinger so I know it was a bee. FR 449 has a few ruts from the rain but nothing you can't avoid. FR 449A has been graded so it's in good shape unlike the trails.

A whole lot of climbing, plenty of fox-tails and yes, more climbing. And like our Deep Creek hike yesterday, it was a foregone conclusion we would not reach the end before turning back.

We did make one attempt to create a loop by returning in the wash, but only after descending 150 feet would we find nothing but a treacherous last 30' drop to the wash. And so we had the same 150' to climb back up before going back 'down' on the Tule Canyon trail.

Early in the year, a friend of mine was entertaining the thought of becoming an AZT trail steward when someone had advertised the need for someone to take over the 2-Bar Ridge section... So he decided he wanted to take a look, and off we went. We started from Tule TH (easy access) and started up Tule Trail.

The first mile or so was easy, then a good climb up out of Tule Canyon. Once we hit the plateau, views were expansive, and the trail turned somewhat muddy from recent snow. Then a pretty easy mile and a half or so to the AZT.

Heading north on AZT, we dropped down into the upper part of the Tule Canyon drainage, where there was nice green vegetation (probably burned in the Woodbury Fire) and some patches of snow, and still expansive views. I skipped the off trail part up to the top of Pinyon Mountain, and headed straight down for the tank where it looked like the best spot to start the off-trail section would be.

Heading down into the canyon, we stayed on the ridge for awhile, as it seemed to be the most clear of vegetation. Encountered a herd of cows, and after a quarter mile or so, decided to drop down the east side of the ridge into the wash. This part was a little rough; we headed down a gully, trying to avoid sharp things as much as possible.

Where the wash hit the main branch of Tule Canyon, there was a nice pretty stretch of canyon with narrow walls and running water in the bottom. Lots of riparian greenery too. Couple of small obstacles; one little pour off and a narrow pool. Enjoyable spot, and there were still some trees after the creek dried up.

There were some interesting structures a mile or so before we hit the corral at Tule Trail, not really sure what they were for. Something with water.

After getting back to the car, took a quick looksee up Campaign Canyon with roadies. Didn't make it as far as the school since there was water flowing in the wash at that point.

Curious to see what is left of this area since the fire.

I took a H.E.L. route into the eastern Superstitions to look at some rock piles. The route when through 3 rock piles before getting to the main rock pile. This is normal in the area. I saw a western patch-nosed snake on the way out and no other hikers off trail.

This was planned as a trip from Tule TH to Reavis Ranch and back, something I've done a couple times before, with the intent of stopping after the second big climb, not far from Walnut Spring. However, the weather had other ideas. I knew it was going to be warm, but it was already burning hot by mid-morning when the real elevation started.

Water went down a lot faster than usual and had to spend more time resting, despite being pretty well conditioned. Bees besieged me every time I stopped, but I was mostly able to ignore them. By the time I crested Two Bar Ridge, there didn't seem to be enough gas left in the tank for the next climb, so I started looking for a flat spot to camp. Along the way, I saw a couple big water caches and scouted ahead to where the trail dives back down into the canyon. I saw a good site with a hunter's camp nearby and set up for the night, pretty worn out an working at quarter speed.

After setting up, I went out walking again and met one of the hunters on his way back to back. He said the shots I heard a couple hours earlier were his buddies, who got a deer up on the ridge on the far side of the canyon. They had about 3 miles and something like 1500 feet up to get it back to camp. I looked around a bit more and went back to fix dinner and watch the night fall. Even without the moon, it didn't get too dark. From that point on Two Bar Ridge, light domes from Phoenix and Tucson are clearly visible, and I could also see construction activity on Hwy 188, I think at the Roosevelt Work Center.

Eventually the other hunters came in with the deer and ate dinner before they finished cutting it up. I had been asleep for an hour by the time they were done, but my camp was between them and the trail and I talked with them for a few minutes as they began their night-hike out to the Two Bar Ridge TH.

The next morning was warm after a warm night, so I expected another hot day. I wasn't much in the mood for another hot climb starting with less water than I like, so I decided to hike out instead. It was indeed brutally hot by 10:00 am, but I did run across a big group of dayhikers who climbed a little peak next to the Tule Trail. After dodging some cattle, I ate lunch by the tanks in Tule Canyon and watched the birds for a while before the last couple dusty miles to the car.

The trail is well maintained and is much easier to follow than the first few times I was out here. It seems more heavily used than it was 15 years ago. If I ever try this route again, though, it will be in cooler weather.

Repeat. Last week's trip was cut short due to lack of water. The intended off trail route looked ugly so it was passed on. This trip took that route and confirmed it was ugly. The ruin it went to is large and out of the way so I thought it was worth a look. The steep descent on the short route was loose with many agave and prickly pear so the return route was the easy one but added 3 miles. I saw a herd of javelina and one white-tailed deer on the hike but no photos. :( The trail was mine alone and the temp was 62 degrees at 5:15am and then 92 degrees at 11:50am. It wasn't bad.

This was an early stroll up Tule Canyon to check out a few ruins and get back before it warmed up. The trail is narrow with grass growing in but easy enough to follow. The upper section blends in but there are large cairns to connect to dots with. I saw 2 white-tailed deer but neither waited around for photos. It didn't seem too hot but I was drinking a lot so it was warm. No other hikers out and I was finished by 11:20a.

Pine Creek was my destination for an overnight stay. Started from the Tule parking area at 7AM. The road is in excellent shape, all cars can make it. The first 5 miles are obviously all uphill. Previous descriptions include loose footing and sparse cairns along this route. Both still apply. Saw a group of maybe 3-5 hiking in behind me but never got too close. Made Two Bar intersection at 9:30. After a short break it was on towards Reavis Gap. Two Bar follows a fence line for the next mile or so before dropping about 800 feet down into what is probably a dry canyon other times of the year. About halfway down I came upon three hikers. The N, Dallin, and Alex were heading uphill on their way towards a pickup at Roosevelt lake the next day. Only people I passed on the trip. Good to meet Dallin and Alex, The N and I plotted a mission for warmer weather to Victorine Crossing. After a quick chat, Dallin pointed out my impending climb up the other side of this canyon so it was onto filter some water and then climb. Somebody left a clif bar by the creek? Once out of the canyon it was a pleasant stroll to Walnut Spring and then a right turn on Reavis Gap trail. Just 15 minutes more and I was hearing the rushing water at Pine Creek. Similar to Hells Hole, there are two obvious campsites here, one is sort of a double. I camped there and it was very nice. Lots of wood left over for the next camper.
The overnight temps were mild and there was no wind to speak of. I packed up and headed out. Filtered some more water by the abandoned clif bar and made the push on up and out. The long downhill of Tule to finish was enjoyable during the heat of the day. Bummer traffic on the way back from the Renaissance festival.
