Later portion of FR 143 is clearly smoother than it was the last time I drove it 2.5 years ago. That doesn't translate to you should attempt it with your car. Still takes lots of time driving back there from the 87.

4 Peaks Trail provides even better views than browns. Amethyst Trail is rocky and requires some RF. Don't expect to run into anyone on there.

This trail winds past 3 of the 4 peaks. It eventually becomes overgrown before hitting a dead end at a keep out sign 🛑 This spot is aptly described in the write up. We took browns back. The others preferred it to continuing back on Amethyst.

I expected scorched earth on the drive in with a few exceptions but what I saw was scorched earth with almost no exception. I counted about 3 surviving Emory Oak, a few Sycamores and 2 or 3 Pinion Pine Trees. There was water at the creek that flows through Brushy Basin, water at Mud Spring and a trickle of water at Picadilla Creek, probably should add Picadilla to water source map as it is fairly reliable. Found puddle of water at Bear Spring although it is not easily accessible due to heavy vegetation including Poison Ivy. Also found young AZ Walnut Tree near spring. Four Peaks area burned near TH but the area that burned in Lone Pine Fire 1996 (E. of TH) is almost untouched, thankfully. Temps on the trail were 20-25 degrees cooler than the valley. Saw squirrel and signs of bear and deer.

Tons of snow! I didn't realize it, but the road up to the trailhead was closed until Saturday. Oops. I didn't think there would be quite so much snow, but it was an adventure! :D

There was a group of 3 men ahead of us on the trail. That made hiking easy, to follow in their footsteps... Until they went off trail and went straight up the side of the nearest peak. We decided to follow as we didn't feel like hiking through fresh snow. But that was short-lived, as they were going all the way up the peak (well, they tried but the chute was iced over so they weren't able to). We originally planned to do the browns-amethyst-four peaks loop, but after going in fresh snow from the saddle to the trail junction, we decided to keep going over on browns 133 vs going down the steep amethyst trail blind in the snow. That way we eventually met up with the footprints on browns trail we had walked in before the footprints went off trail. There was a spectacularly deep section of snow right before we met up with our original route. I wonder what that ridge section looks like without snow. For most of the fresh snow trail section I could tell where the trail was, but not there. Thank goodness for route scout!! 😀😀😀❤️❤️❤️

We descended back down the way we came and headed back to our car. I look forward to doing the loop another day, without 2 to 3 feet of snow!

One last adventure... Our truck slid off the road after braking for another truck off the road... Yay... Just the way you want to end your hike. :/ We had just turned from Pigeon Springs road onto four Peaks road 143. We didn't get very far before we hit a snowy section melting in the afternoon sun. Lots of people were kind and tried to help, but the F150 is heavy and no one was big enough to pull us out. The day ended with the 4x4 tow truck and a late drive home. :O Next trip can be less eventful! ;)

Thanks to Joe for posting this Route and Guide in 2004. We have been hiking the Brown's Peak trail since the early 90's when we were young enough to climb Brown's Peak with our college age sons. Now in our 70s, Brown's Saddle is as far as we go. Every time we pass the "TR 133" sign near the saddle, we look down and wonder if the trail down is passable. Last Thursday, we decided to give it a try. It's always more interesting to hike a loop and it was still early in the day. My Garmin map on my GPS clearly marks a trail there, so we decided to follow it down to the Four Peaks trail which we had hiked before and found easy and beautiful.
Down the Amethyst, the going was slow due to all the obstacles blocking anything resembling a clear trail. Early on we found occasional cairns marking switchbacks which deviated from the GPS track, but were frequently confronted with a wall of thick manzanita bushes and had to decide whether to push through or detour around. As we did our best to get back to the GPS track, we did find some clear stretches of obvious trail marked with cairns. As we approached the 4 Peaks trail we had to probe several areas of the thick manzanita growth to finally find a zig zag route through. At least there was no catclaw! Our average speed on this 0.9 mile segment with a 900 ft descent was 0.5 mph.
We did not find Joe's track until we got back, but after downloading it and superimposing it on ours, it was pretty close. With some long handled pruners, maybe someone can make this section of the Amethyst trail more enjoyable. As always, we enjoyed our entire day, including the challenges, in this beautiful wilderness.

Another perfect day in paradise! Everything went according to plan! Not very many people on the trail, having only come across 5 people total the entire day. Took the Amethyst trail detour, Amethyst spring has flowing, forming a couple small pools of water, enough for a nalgene bottle. El Oso Road was in perfect condition.

Tried the MotherLode in May 2013 and tore my ACL within sight of Brown's Brother summit and had to hobble back to the TH defeated. After surgery tried again the same year on Dec 21st but we got snowed out. Third times the charm as we had good weather and even better cloud effects.

7am start with the clouds rolling in...Chumley said they were not of the rain variety and he was correct. The clouds made for a great show all along the Four Peaks ridgeline as we made the tough climb across. We took our time crossing and stopped for a nice break on each summit to enjoy the views and cloud show. Definitely think that the climb between peak 2 and 3 is the toughest although it may be just the way we went. Lots of vertical slabs, knife edge climbs, and crashing through brush. But eventually we all made it to Amethyst Peak and celebrated making it across...somebody brought some nougat Christmas mints :)

Great hike...so glad to finally get this one without incident :y:

After pestering BiFrost for the past 6 months to put together a redemption hike on Four Peaks, the day finally arrived. An almost perfect day for hiking, great weather for the most part and couldn't have asked for a better group.

Pictures and videos from the other partners don't do this hike justice. There are some days that the way the clouds interact with the mountain you are on turn an ordinary hike into something special. Plus to know that only a handful of people got watch nature's talent show with you is a good feeling. Glad that I live in Arizona on a day like yesterday.

If you are a fan of off trail adventures, peak bagging, scrambling, exposure, getting poked and prodded by various sharp flora, scree and a long day on the trail, then this is the hike for you.

Hiked some hills. I think there were four of them. Good people. Spectacular weather with mother nature putting on a theatrical show with the clouds. My first time doing 1-2-3-4. I still think 4-3-2-1 is my preference. I have to remind myself to do this more than once a year. Lately I seem to break my truck on HAZ trips. Oh well. Seems worth it.

Just another Mother Lode, however, this time with company. A really good time, a couple of guys were making first time runs, and Karl was able to finish the hike that he tore his ACL on not quite a year ago I believe.

I did the traditional 1-2-3-4 so it was a different experience for me as well. We did not really rush over the peaks and took some extended breaks at the summits, therefore, it was not as strenuous as my Mother Lode run in June. But I enjoyed this hike nearly as much, I was able to fool around with some new routes and was finally able to see portions of the route that I had missed on my first run.

A little busy on the trail as we neared the trail head, some people camping there as well, most enjoyed a beer and we called it a day. The ride home was interesting to say the least, a little mad max mixed with the old western and a taste of Phoenix.

"wow that escalated quickly!"

So Four Peaks was on my radar after reading JJ's recent triplog. That led to a causal conversation with John at Boulders on Sunday about why neither one of us have hit that high point, some how that escalated into me knocking out the Mother Lode!

Nothing was really ideal about this Mother Lode trip either. I didn't even leave Boulders until 10, and it was not until about 11:30 p.m. that the idea of the Mother Lode even crossed my mind while searching for driving directions and a route up to Brown's Peak. I thought why not just download a route and play it by ear? But whose route? I knew well enough not to touch anything done by Dave 1, Joe, Bob P, or J.J. ;)

I noticed that Chumley had taken Claire on his last Mother Lode trip so I figured that route was probably more in my wheel house and sadly more conducive to my skill set and conservative nature. After all, I would be going solo. Lets be real though, I upped the ante a tad bit on Chumley's route, found a few more "direct" approaches ;)

Again nothing was ideal about the planning for this little hike, I jotted down on a 3" by 5" note card "4321 classic" "1234 hard" some driving directions on the back and the names of the peaks by number, that was the extent of my planning. However, to be honest at that point I was pretty much reserved to just finally knock out Brown's Peak.

Even when morning hit I was still just committed to Browns Peak, slept in a little, went to the gym and did not even finish up until nearly 6:30, came home ate a quick little breakfast and really did not rush to leave town. In hindsight, could have probably did without the 5 a.m gym run, there were no shortages of opportunities to work other muscles besides the legs on this hike.

Didn't even start hiking until 9! Sacrilege for the last day of June in AZ! However, thanks in part to my usual early morning caffeine buzz, I thought why not? Although, in hindsight it would have probably been prudent to let someone know where and what I was doing before sister's peak, when I finally got the bright idea to at least shoot Chumley a quick text.

I don't know if I always took the right route, but I made it! The hike was awesome, just a nice little test of nerves, strength, stamina etc. It also had a little twist at the end.

I ran into two guys on way back to TH, and their exact first words to me were, "hey, we are a little loss." When I came across them they were down to one water source between the two of them and measuring shadows in an attempt to determine the cardinal directions. They had violated a very basic rule that whenever I bring up people scoff and laugh at me. A map is nearly useless for the most part if you can not identify any of your cardinal directions, last I check paper maps do not orient their self. I don't want to make light of their situation, but they were close to the TH. However, they were preparing to head back to the fork heading towards Amethyst Mine, as they were sure that is where they went wrong. I told them, "look you two are grown men, so I wont lecture you, but I am going to hike probably a 1000 miles this year, and you will never catch me out hiking without at the very least my compass and GPS and preferably a map if possible." They totally got it and were relieved to join me for final stretch back to TH. Although, a comical situation to most of us, this is how tragedies happen, so if I don't show up, these two guys with about 20 oz of water would have hiked all the way back to the mining area, probably turned around again and who knows what may have happened from there. When we got to the car they told me their goal was to knock out at least three of the peaks, to give a perspective they started ten minutes after me and did Brown's Peak plus about 300 feet towards his brother before they wisely backed off. In fact, the one guy said, "hey did you find you had to climb to hit all those peaks today, because we were climbing!?" I replied, "a little" ;)

After Action Review (AAR):

One thing I did well: Route finding, I don't remember ever having to back track, although, when I post my route it may say different.

One thing I need to improve on: Communication! probably does not hurt to let someone know where I am at for these type of hikes.

One thing I can sustain: Pace was solid, granted I had a route as guide, but was still able to knock out the Mother Lode in under seven hours, seems respectable from the triplogs I read.

Consumed before hike: 1 scoop of NO Explode, 1 NOS Energy drink and a bowl of Kix, Just a little 600mg caffeine buzz to start your day.

Consumed During hike: 80 oz of water, 20 oz of Gatorade, two Fig Newtons, a Rice Crispy Treat and three peanut butter crackers, no time to eat when you are climbing all day.

Final Notes: I always have a soundtrack in my head for my hikes, usually a song I am too embarrassed to admit was stuck in my head, and I silently and even aloud sometimes usually recite the one chorus I know over and over, Well for this hike that song was "Mother" by Danzig, I thought very appropriate.

Just a great way to end my most productive month of hiking as a HAZ member, from Grand Canyon to the top of Humphreys, Bear Wallow, Blue Range, Pacheta, some peaks and high points around Prescott and a nice little grand finale..The Mother Lode.

HAZ Appreciation:Thank you Janelle for route, Chumley said you can thank Janelle for that route, so thank you.

Been wanting to do this one after reading Triplogs and seeing the Photosets. This just looked like my kind of Hike. And since these types of Hikes can be alot of fun with friends, I coaxed Brian and Sam into joining me. They didn't need much convincing... :D

Got an early start from town, but El Oso Road still took longer than I had planned even though it looked like it had been graded since I was at Lone Pine Saddle last. I go in from the Roosevelt side just to be sure my vehicle will make it, and I'm not a fan of really long dirt roads anyway.

Got on Brown's Trail at 7:45 and I knew immediately I was going to have a hard time. For some reason I wasn't feeling well, my legs felt like I had 50 lb weights strapped to my ankles. Didn't really understand it, but I think it was that the Elevation change was hitting me all at once. I felt like a real slug and was getting winded too much right off the bat. I looked at my hands after about 1/2 mile and they were already pretty swollen, so I'm pretty sure the elevation was wreaking some havoc. ;) Need to work on getting some more higher elevation hikes in so I can get a little acclimated I guess. Brian and Sam were very patient...

Enjoyed the views all of the way up to Brown's Saddle and really enjoyed the vistas from there as well. The air was a little Hazy, but not too bad at that point. There was a breeze blowing and I was glad for the light fleece I was wearing. I think Sam was happy that I convinced him to take his light jacket with.:) Apparently, sometimes it is beneficial to have a "girl" on the trip, as skatchkins also pointed out in a recent log... Brian had brought his portable radio and was happily talking with some of his Ham Radio buddies down below in the Valley....

The view I liked the most was the view of what looked like our Route up to the Peak, which was now very very close. Little did I know that the scrambling I was seeing was just an appetizer.... :GB:

Got moving again after the Photo opportunities were satisfied and started the light scrambling up. We reached a narrow area where we had to boulder over a small chute and then shortly after, arrived at the base of the Chute. We stopped for a few minutes, just to gape at what we were going to have to do. But although it was going to be a challenge, it really looked fun to me. I love this stuff!!!

We got started up the Chute and I think we all figured out that the biggest challenge was going to be dodging the rocks that the people in front of you were dislodging, because some of the rocks kept going for a ways down. You have to give the person in front of you plenty of room so that you have time to react. I made the mistake of tailgating Sam at one point and was very happy to know that my reflexes are still pretty fast. I caught the rock in my left hand just before it smacked me in the face.... I give thanks for all of the years of playing First Base.... :D Later on while still in the Chute, I sent down a pretty large rock that the guys had to really watch out for.... :o

We got up the Chute to the small saddle. It's deceiving when you're in the Chute, because you see daylight at the top and think when you get there, you're on top. Well, no, not quite. You end up on a tiny saddle and when you look to the left you realize that you have about another 100 feet to go up. I found a Route up after a couple of Photo Ops and we got to the Peak in short order. :y:

Spent quite a bit of time on the Peak, taking pictures, having a bite to eat, soaking in the views and playing with a Squirrel that decided he liked Chocolate Chip Cookie crumbs. I made sure there was no Chocolate in my offerings. I'm not a big fan of "feeding" the Wildlife, but I wanted to see just how brave this little guy was. He really wanted to see what Brian had in his pack and I think if Brian hadn't been standing where he was the whole time, that Squirrel would have invaded it. He was really cute. :kf: There was another Squirrel up there as well, but I only saw him for a minute or so, as he decided to be anti-social. Brian was having alot of fun with his Radio and it seems like it would be a good tool to have, as our Cell Phone coverage was poor to nonexistent. He could even use the Radio like a phone up there. :) I was very surprised in the fact that I could not find a Benchmark or a Summit Log up there anywhere. I looked really hard both in the area where we topped out next to the Peak and at the Peak itself. I did find an area on the Peak that looked like it was freshly disturbed and there was a hole of some kind there. Is the Benchmark missing???? No Log, really???

Decided to head down and I knew the Chute would be rougher going down, than coming up, as is just about always the case. And it was, but we still made good time, even with dodging a rock or two. By the time we hit the bottom of the Chute, the wind had really picked up and was howling up through the slot area that we were still in. We were glad at that point to not be on top, although on our way down, we ran into 3 other Hikers who were on their way up. We ran into two more of their party further down who had elected to not Summit this time due to physical limitations. Took a small break and then got down to the Saddle and took a few more pics as the Clouds were really putting on a show by this time.

Got to the north Junction with Amethyst Trail and took it instead of continuing back on Brown's. We had decided pretrip to do the Loop and take the Amethyst down to the Four Peaks Trail and take that back to the Lone Pine Saddle. The last time I was on the Four Peaks Trail at this last section, it was dark, so I only got to see that portion of the Trail by flashlight and was looking forward to seeing it during the daylight hours. I've always enjoyed Loops more anyway, just for the change of scenery....

This ended up almost being a very time consuming mistake. Although the Amethyst Trail was well defined the first 10th of a mile or so, after that, don't even attempt it without a GPS. :o We almost had to double back up to the Brown's Trail. This Trail is nonexistent in places and in others, you have to bushwack quite a bit, just to find it and in some cases, just to stay on it. It was brutally apparent that this Trail has not had any maintenance in quite a very long time. Much worse than anything I had run into on the Four Peaks Trail, in the trip prior to this one. At least with the Four Peaks Trail, the Trail stayed defined enough to follow. No such luck on this Trail. If Brian hadn't pulled out the GPS, the Route finding would have been horrid and possibly not successful at all. Even with the GPS, it wasn't that easy. Luckily, none of us had worn shorts on this Trip. Wow! We finally intersected with the Four Peaks Trail and it was much easier and we made good time back to the car.

Even with the small fiasco of Amethyst Trail, it was an awesome Hike, made even better with good company. :) A big Thanks to Brian and Sam for making it another very cool, memorable trip. : app :

Needed to escape for a bit so I thought this would be a worthy punishment. Always fun to see fresh snow on the peaks. Unfortunately I got a very late start and didn't get to hike as much as I wanted. Stopped to grab some star shots on the way home.

We were up really early and I was excited to attempt the "2 to 4 peaks." =) After our last outing, I was expecting 11+ hrs of adventure. Unfortunately, we were snowed out but we ended up playing in the snow instead. We started up Brown's Peak, but we didn't have adequate apparel. The snow was making our fingers sting and it was melting into our shoes. Part of the way up we decided that the risk might not to worth the fall. Climbing conditions were slick and may not have been optimal with numb fingers and toes...
I was a quite bummed.
I cheered up very quickly when we went to the old amethyst mine. I get SO excited about the simple things, for me it was all of the purple crystals, apparently for Joe, it was the 20yr old abandoned lawn lounger found outside the mine. (see photo :))
We finished by taking the scenic route back to the truck.

Janelle and I headed out to to tackle Peaks 3 & 4 and possibly more. With the unexpected April blizzard the day before that was pretty much out of the question. We opted to just do Brown's Peak over the easily understandable route. Up the chute to the first climb it was apparent it was just too dangerous to get back down. Not to mention it was flat out unpleasant with sting-freezing fingers and toes negotiating that terrain. Had a little bit of fun sliding down the chute on the fresh snow albeit a little bumpy.

We decided to head over to the Amethyst Mine with the extra time. The trail skirting the peaks is starting to get over grown by manzanita. We were pretty much soaked from brushing the melting snow on the bushes. We did a little exploring in the area then headed back. Amazingly we didn't get soaked on the return as the sun apparently dried the foliage.

On the way back we opted for the Amethyst Trail & the Four Peaks Trail for the return. This is the first I've been on the Amethyst in four years. The mid section is getting very overgrown. I got us off route and Janelle got us back on track. The snow was melting at warp speed creating a creek right down the trail. On to the Four Peaks Trail it was a prime stroll home.

I saw several varieties of wildflowers. Mostly lupine. Some of which were covered by snow making for an interesting combination! One of the most exciting parts of the day was a mature buck flying across the road on the drive in.

Sure would be nice IF there was a helicopter service available to the upper Lone Pine TH from the Hwy87/FR143(Four Peaks Rd) intersection.. What a body beating that 20ml one way drive on FR143 still is on this washboard, rough, rutty, windy, & hard-rocky road..and..especially so when trying to drive it in a short wheel-based vehicle. We averaged 15 to 20mph in 1hr-15min to finally arrive the TH at 9:45am. Good thing that we had planned a sane outing this day with more actual trail maintenance planned than hiking. We had some new "by-pass garden pruners" that we wanted to break-in on these trails to give back a little by trimming some excessive trail overgrowth while hiking this loop.

This Friday was a mostly cloudy, overcast day with some nice breezes that made for a comfortable trail maintenance day and enjoyable hiking day in our Four Peaks Wilderness. Our main goal was to tackle the badly overgrown Amethyst Tr#253, but in the process we were also able to clean-up about 3/4 of the entire Browns Trail#133 to its intersection with the Amethyst Tr#253. We had lunch further up at Browns Saddle when I confirmed by looking up at the hiking route to summit Browns Peak, that I would not have any future reason or need to attempt that HAZ hike! I will now be content "just viewing" Browns Peak from a distance while driving North and South on Hwy#87 :) ..

The main loop connector trail, the Amethyst Trail, is in fairly bad shape. Mostly a serious downhill, many washed-out areas and loose-rocky-rutted sections, with a lot of manzanita overgrowth for the last two-thirds of the trail. As always happens when I plan this type of hike, I end up spending too much time cutting trail overgrowth in the beginning, when the real need is usually further back in on more remote trail sections. We were able to accomplish some good trail clean-up for about the first one-third of the Amethyst Tr distance, but we needed to stop cutting at 3:20pm and start hiking..

When you arrive at the lower end of the Amythest Tr/Four Peaks Tr#130 intersection(5835'), IF you turn LEFT, you will take the route back to the TH as per this hike description. We turned RIGHT on the Four Peaks Tr and hiked about .3mls to the next intersection with the PIGEON TR#134(5630'). This very scenic (with numerous views of Roosevelt Lake & beyond to the East) and easy to follow 2ml trail which is also part of the Arizona Trail , makes it way back to an official TH end at FR648, on this same road we drove in on just 1/2ml below where we parked our vehicle at the Upper Lone Pine TH.
I recommend trying this alternate loop option which will make the total loop hike about 7mls instead of 4.15mls. Having now hiked both trails, I enjoyed Tr#134 much more than hiking back to the TH via the Four Peaks Tr#130..Also, there is parking at this PIGEON TH for two vehicles.

Terrific Day up on Brown's. 104 in the Valley, but 80's up on top. The manzanita is reestablishing itself along (and across) the Amethyst Trail, but is easy to follow.

Not the best day to top Maricopa County - hot and humid. But I did it! Saw Woodstock too.
