Practice hike: a little different route where I stayed on the low side hiking WSW. Some of it I had hiked at one time and small portion of the regular loop. Lots of quail greeted me and cheered me on. Saw a hummer and tried to get pics but sun was in my eyes. Then I saw a rabbit, but too much people traffic and sun was in my eyes.

Made my way south and up to main circumference trail and then below per the 308 signage. Heading east I could see the trail ahead at a junction. Another hiker said nowhere to go but up shortly so I did that and swung back west on 308. Saw a white breasted bird, turned out to be a Kestrel; never have seen one out here. Pulled up some stinkweed that was easy to get to. On my way east toward Tonto 3, the coyotes started howling. I howled back.

Lots of hikers and dogs on this route; surprised me a bit.

WATCH: 2.86 mi, 4:24-5:29PM, 144bpm avg/166bpm max burning 500 cal. 75% max zone 5, 18% anaerobic. 282ml sweat loss. TEMP 71.5 sunny, 26% humidity (felt higher), 1.9mph wind from the south.

Will hike for Blizzard. Pretty clear day. Lots of hikers, quite a few dogs. Brittlebush was showing off its blooms. Moon was shining above. Spotted a trail descending north from western saddle.

Plan B: Ireland. Windy and very clear day. Lots and lots of hikers of all sizes and ages. One runner, two dogs.

Hiked counterclockwise starting at the bottom of the hill with the western loop and up the summit trail part way to grab middle trail and around western saddle.

Baby BB (brittlebush) are doing well in the nursery on the east side. They are growing nicely. I can't imagine what it's going to look like in the spring. The adults are blooming here and there throughout the hike. Grass is taller and still very green.

WATCH: 2.69 mi, 2:37-3:38PM. Avg bpm 146/max 168bpm. 85% zone 5 max, 9% zone 4 anaerobic burning 476 calories. Sweat loss 224ml (336 to replace 150%). I got an achievement award of 3 month-streak (I've actually been very lazy) of consistent exercise. Temp 68, 11% humidity, chilly wind at 11.8mph from the east.

Finally got out for a hike instead of going to the gym; ended up in Ireland again. I haven't done this whole hike by myself for quite a while. Had to park at the TH as the bottom hill three spots were taken. It was a chance to see how I would do on my own. Did okay. 65% humidity is good for the skin?

Hiked it clockwise. Once again amazed by the green, green grass and the massive amount of baby Brittlebush. The sky was completely overcast and was trying to spit a sprinkle or two at me as I made my way around my mountain. The Pincushion still had their bright red pins on the east side. I am very sad to report, soldier down :lone: . We don't have many soldiers of this size on the Preserve. As I headed west, there was a bright pinkish orange layer of low clouds; hard to photograph. I continued around to the southside to the decorated tree. I think Santa stopped by there later (see photoset).

I did my loopty loo around the NW saddle. Just a little further on the south side was a huge patch of that sandmat like plant. Google lens can't really tell what it is and I even took a couple different photos just in case there was trouble with the ID. I stopped and petted my Desert Lavender plant as I made my way along the western humps. I encountered a dog and her owner. She pulled to the side and the medium size dog immediately sat upright next to her. I commented how nice it was that he sat off the trail. She said he knows to sit or he goes back on the leash.

I finished off the humps and headed back to the main TH. Off in the distance below the Lookout west peak was a trail that came straight and steep down the mountain to meet the main trail. I had not noticed that before and wonder what the deal is. Along the way I saw a small patch of Desert Senna, but my photo didn't turn out well. It looks like the two old trails coming to/from the middle area has grown in nicely. There was probably about a dozen hikers about.

Jaelyn was in this part of town so I suggested a hike. I was going to do the North Phx Sonoran Preserve but changed my mind and decided on Ireland, I mean Lookout Mountain. This way she could checkout my workout hike and hit the summit. I parked at the bottom of the hill.

We did the lower Nwestern trail counterclockwise and around to the junction with the Summit Trail. The green green grass of home was impressive. I kept the pace with Jaelyn to the Summit Trail junction, which surprised me. I went up to where the other trail goes to the western saddle and sent Jaelyn up. I told her once she got to the Lookout saddle to veer left and go until she sees the pole post. Back on the crossover trail the Brittle Bush was blooming in the little drainage area and there would be more of it here and there. I noticed lots of new baby Brittlebushes sprouting up all along the trails today as well :) .

I did my little loop around the western saddle and headed back to where I would wait for Jaelyn. However, I decided to head on up a little further, eventually ending up at the saddle below the summit. A few minutes later I could hear Jaelyn and she had picked up another hiker. We hiked with him to the western saddle. He is a local that lives nearby and they exchanged information. He does the Rails by bike; sounds interesting.

At the western saddle I pointed out the other preserves and, of course, where she was at Piestewa. We finished the hike by going around the west side of the western humps to stay in the sun. We only saw one other hiker and dog here. It was a nice hike to enjoy Ireland. I told her about England too. At home, we enjoyed a Huck Vodka Lemonade. Saturday afternoon, we're heading out to Boyce Thompson for Fall colors and lights, a new thing after hours on the weekends.

TMI I'm sure, but it is about the hiking. After digging out my backpacking stuff to get ready for my trip next week, I took my bulging disc out for a test hike. I did a couple hood walks yesterday to see how I would do. (I got caught in the rain downpour but fotunately, I was close to home). I've had a bulging disc since 1998. After the initial healing, it flares up every few years and apparently, this is the year. The pain usually goes away in a few days. It's not continuous pain nor really painful if that makes any sense. Anyway, I have a backpack trip coming up on the 16th so I wanted to see how my back was doing.

I actually had a great lasso loop around Lookout so I was pleased with that. It looks like some brushing was done so that was nice to see and hike on. I saw a few hikers out enjoying the temperature and weather too.

The last 1/4 mile, I all of a sudden felt blood dripping from my nose :o . I don't recall ever having my nose bleed. It seemed to be running for a moment as I tried to see if I had some kleenex, which I didn't. I hustled back to Tonto rubbing my nose of the blood. I wiped it off and it didn't seem to bleed anymore and has only bled a little since. How bizarre. Oh well, I'll head out again tomorrow. I did read that sometimes dry air and dehydration can lead to this so I'll drink more water before I hike. As to my disc, it actually seems better.

Temp 66.1 partly cloudy, 43% humidity, 6.8MPH wind from the west.

Could be the last afternoon hike I get to enjoy this season. Mother Nature's wind was pretty aggressive at times but it kept the temp cool throughout. I didn't see a single hiker until I got around to the NW saddle. It was woman's day as I saw three female hikers and one male dog. I changed it up a bit, hiking in a counterclockwise manner. Second time I've gotten a side ache... not sure why, but it is uncomfortable.

Lookin' for the Easter 'bunny in a clockwise loop. Seemed warm to start but my body seemed to adjust and it was just fine. I'm always nervous to hike when I haven't hiked for a couple weeks. Didn't find the Easter bunny but heard it at the two mile mark. Probably about ten hikers out enjoying this Saturday afternoon. Did my usual kicking off rocks here and there. I think every single barrel cactus had blooms... seriously. Air was clear.

Saturday: from bottom of hill took little loop west and then back east to circle the mountain clockwise. Passed a hiker before heading south and then crossed paths with her as I headed east. We would run into each other two more times. Probably 1/2 dozen hikers out enjoying the afternoon. I didn't have to go to the Park. One of the crooked Compass Cactuses was uprooted, one more still hanging on. Saw big billowing of black smoke turning to white smoke; tested out the 30x. Whatever it was, it was quickly gone.

Saw two lizards, two budding Pinchushion cactus and one blooming Compass cactus. I still can't believe I have not seen one poppy this year. I wonder, have we never had a wildflower season in the valley? Even the Brittlebush didn't bloom for the most part.

WATCH 3.54 mi, 3:48-5:03PM, 1463-1703 elevation, 140 avg bpm/166 max, (66% Zone 5 max, 31% Zone 4 anerobic) burning 548 calories. TEMP 75.1, sunny, 18% humidity with 11.2 mph gusts from the west.

SUNDAY: From the bottom of the hill, I went counterclockwise around the circumference. One of these times I will have to follow the signs for the actual Circumference trail. There was a very nice western breeze that accompanied me on the first 1/4 mile. I enjoyed that immensely.

Today, some of the climbs that I normally think of a tad steep for me, really weren't. And I heard the Easter Bunny at the first mile and the bleeting lamb on the second. I saw two quail and a Piper; not many hikers, one biker. Noticed another blooming Compass cactus on the east side.

WATCH 3.54 miles, 11:18AM-12:34PM, 1479-1735 elevation, 137 avg bmp/159 max (56% Zone 5 max, 37% Zone 4 anaerobic, 7% Zone 3 aerobic) burning 541 calories. TEMP 75.1, 19% humidity, 3.7mph wind from SSW.

It's interesting that with my WATCH stats, the route I did Sunday counterclockwise, that I consider the slightly harder way, gave me lower stats. Also, the temp was exactly the same but at different times of day. The calories burned were very similar.

Since I blew off gym class Friday morning, due to the excuse of cold and rain, I gotta do a double this weekend. Before I left, I booked my trip to visit Cousin Wendy. We are going to Fredericksburg TX for wildflower season, as I suspect we won't be getting much here.

This is my warm-up hike for tomorrow's Shaw Butte Loop. The air was crisp with a nice breeze as I started up the hill to do my clockwise loop with a stop at Lookout Park. I did grab some very distant pictures of the snow on the Mazzies.

They're doing some sort of renovation at Lookout Park as it's also a workout park; may have to try that sometime. I headed back up the hill which seemed easy today. I continued on my loop. At the first south saddle I decided to take the upper trail where the bee/rattlesnake cave is since it's out of season. The trail is a tad dicey so you gotta pay attention a little. Didn't see anything in the small cave/alcove.

I finished off the route to Tonto. There was a hummer along the way so I tried to grab some photos which is always hard to do with the cellphone. There were a few hikers and dogs out and even a bikerider; that trail isn't easy for bikers.

WATCH: 3.66 mi, 3:37-4:57PM, 133 bpm/159 max (39% zone 5 max, 45% zone 4 anaerobic, 15% zone 3 aerobic) burning 553 calories, 1468-1714 elevation. Temp was an awesome 64.3, sunny, 34% humidity (felt it a bit too), 8.1 mph wind from WSW.

Counterclockwise lasso loop. Fairly nice out as there was a slight breeze. 13 hikers, 8 dogs, 3 lizards. Kicked off a lot of rocks. Oh, it was pretty clear out there compared to yesterday. Still trying to hike in the afternoons.

WATCH 3.5 miles, 3:54-5:06PM, 136 bpm/159 max, 52% Zone 5 max and 40% Zone 4 anaerobic and 7% aerobic burning 507 calories, 1435-1686 elevation (501 gain). Temp 78.8 sunny 10% humidity 3.7MPH wind from the SW.

Plan B. I decided to start my clockwise hike from Lookout Park. The drive is quite a bit longer so I may not do that very often. I did like finishing there. Some of the houses in the neighborhood were quite interesting though.

It was a lovely late afternoon for a hike. This would be HAZel's first outing with Galaxy Ultra 25 phone and Galaxy 7 watch. I am very impressed with my watch in general, quite the update from the 3 and much better battery life. Plus, HAZel now has competition as this is a man's voice that reports to me on the watch :D . There were quite a few people out today, but why not. The trail was its usual self, altho I did kick off several rocks.

On my way up the hill after crossing the north wash, I spotted something blue and it was a bird. We never see blue birds up here. I tried to get a few shots but it was facing the wrong way. There was a line of women and their little ones heading up the mountain at 16th St, one had a griddle? I added on part of the southeast loop before returning to Tonto so I could get my 3 miles.

On my way to get groceries I had the pleasure of enjoying two Sun Dogs. One of them even went lateral for me. Now, let's see what the watch says: 3.06 mi, 4:07-5:15PM, 133 bpm (159 max), 45% max and 42% anaerobic and 12% aerobic burning 458 calories. It added the elevation gain which says 481 feet (1460-1683). Temp was a lovely 73.3, slight clouds, 15% humidity.

Kelly had a plan to hit some peaks in the middle of the metropolis. I had hiked some of these peaks back in 2009. Nothing since, so I was game.
Fun day bouncing around to the different trails and peaks. Great lunch afterwards at El Super Tacos.
Good times. Thanks Kelly! :)

from the hill on 16th St, straight up to the middle trail and then counterclockwise. Saw a squirrel and rabbit at the very start, golden finches and hummingbirds at the end. Encountered a gal that was following All Trails 308 and she inquired as to where to go when we were on one of the saddles. I said I wasn't exactly sure what the official 308 was but she could follow me around the mountain as she was parked on 18th St.

Cammy has just started hiking these trails. She is 64 and retired a couple years ago. I learned a whole lot more; it's amazing how much conversation you can cover in a few miles  . She came to the Valley in 1981, just like me. Anyway, as we rounded the SW mountain we saw a Roadrunner walking up and down on the trail. I explained to her to basically stay on the middle trails (she had already been lost once).

We arrived at the point where she could hike down to Lookout Park. Another lady heard me giving Cammy the directions and she was new to the hike too and also using All Trails. We all introduced ourselves. She was trying to figure it out. I offered to take her around to the 16th St side but she wanted to go the other way.

I finished off the hike with that little quarter loop I do on the NW side.

I got my new phone and watch yesterday but I gotta do all that transfer stuff. The new watch is going to be amazing. And this time, my old watch actually recorded the hike as a hike: 3.93 miles, 2:13-3:52PM, 1506-1752 elevation, 144 bpm (171 max) and it showed 69% at max, 21 % anaerobic burning 481 calories.

Temp was a lovely 75.1 and sunny, 16% humidity and a slight breeze at times.

Clockwise from the bottom of the hill. Lots more people and dogs out than you would think at 4:30ish. Cool in the shade. I'm glad I wore the shirt with the extra long sleeves. Two fiero compass cactus are really leaning; I don't expect they'll be standing much longer :( .

Good day though as one of my fellow HAZers is going to the Granite Park Chalet with me in July as my expected companion (another HAZer) may not be able to make it (and I'm working on another as the reservation is for 4 people). These reservations are hard to get. It's easy enough to cancel, but I signed up for the Geology Workshop and it doubled in price. Getting someone to take the reservation is easy, it's the workshop that is the issue as they won't refund.

WATCH 4:23-5:39PM Temp was a chilly 59, sunny and only 7% humidity. I was glad the wind had died down.

I hadn’t tackled either of these since @Tortoise_Hiker and I completed them as part of our 7 Summits Challenge back in 2011.

Starting at Lookout Mountain, the chill quickly diminished as the climb began immediately from the trailhead. The steeper section was a bit rocky, but the burn was short-lived, with the top reached within half a mile.

The trail I took down was slightly slippery, leading me through Lookout Mountain Park.

Next, I circled around Shadow Mountain and reached the peak from the east. Initially, I had planned to descend to the north and complete the Shadow Mountain loop, but the ridgeline looked far more interesting, so I headed west instead.

The day wrapped up with some neighborhood walking to get back over to Lookout Mountain and complete the adventure.

It was a nice day exploring one of the city parks.

Cclockwise from the bottom of the hill. Lots of hikers, dogs and 2 electric bikes. Thought about my trip reports for the first couple days of my Camino hike in October.

WATCH was apparently on strike. Temp 60.7, slight breeze which made it pretty chilly at times, and 15% humidity.
