I haven't visited this cool view since last year so I decided to have a little personal Easter sunrise service at the altar of the Superstitions (and Goldfields). I took the lazy way up via 4x4 on the "smooth/graded road" to the turnaround. The road is getting pretty gnarly, but I managed to make it up there.

The path up and across the mesa is really clear now. A far cry from my first visit many years ago. The skies were cloudless and clear when I started up, so I knew it wouldn't be a color show, but the views up top are pretty amazing, no matter the sky conditions. The weather was perfect, the temp in my truck showed 50 degrees as I started up.

The quiet of the sunrise was broken up by the sudden surge of motorcycles, cars pulling boats and someone over at Acacia Rec Area with an impressive soundsystem blasting Mariachi music. So much for peace and solitude, but I was all alone up on the cliffs and that was nice.

After exploring down close to the bottom of the cliff, I turned back and made my way back across the massif and down the steep mini-chute back to my truck.

Always a treat to hit this one. I think another visit to this location for some Milky Way shooting will be in my future. Such amazing views towards the western Supes.

Denny gets us out for a hike once a year. This year he picked a two good ones that were easy. Lunch at Tortilla Flat was good. The Canyon Lake Massif is less scary will better views. The old road leads to a trail which is moderate. The Tortilla Creek Massif looks scary. The trail is good and the steep part is solid rock so good traction and no problem if you're careful. Fun times with Denny & Bob.

Just to set the record straight, we are not the same age and never will be. Wally is the oldest and Denny is the 2nd oldest. Denny is actually about 5 million seconds older than me, and Wally is about 29 million seconds older. Denny picked a couple of good hikes this year. For those wanting a little lesson on a massif, her it goes: most massifs are massive. They are formed from techno drumming below the ground which is caused by ordinary magma(hence not De-gassed). This ordinary boring magma gets in the rocks and starts expanding which causes the band to play hard rock. This in turn pushes the whole thing to the surface making a massif. Sometimes, when magma freezes it can also create a massif.

We sang a few Denny songs, so it was a good day. Thanks Wally (the eldest) and Denny (the 2nd eldest). Twas good to see you guys. Thanks for driving and lunch Denny.

Wally, Bob and I got out for our same age hike. The big 63! We hiked a Massif here a Massif there and then grabbed a bite to eat at Tortilla Flat. It was great to catch up with these two and see what they have been up to! Great weather, hike, views, lunch, and company! Always enjoy the outings with these two!! Thanks Gentlemen!! I couldn't decide which trail to hit for my Birthday Day hike, but my job stepped in and made the choice for me. I had to get out and back in time to make it back to the house/office before 930am.

It's been a couple years since I hit this one. I was hoping for some clouds, but checking with the weather reports over the weekend, it was cloudless as predicted.

I arrived earlier enough to catch a few Milky Way shots (my first of 2024!). But, once Astro Twilight started, I enjoyed the cold brisk pre-dawn air.

In all the years I have been coming up here, I have never seen another human. I love the views and solitude this little hike offers up. There were, to my surprise, a large number of cars/trucks driving on the Apache Trail/HWY 88 at 5am-7am. I was wondering where they were all going. I didn't see any boats putting out. Who knows? Tortilla Flats? Workers at the Marina?

The sunrise was very sublte as expected and once Mr Sun made an appearance, it was my cue to start hiking down. A great way to start a Birthday & work week.

Another visit to one of my favorite viewpoints. I was hoping for a nice sunrise and arrived to the base in the dark. The clouds did not look promising at first, but as the sunrise started, it turned out to be a really nice one.

The trail up is getting clearer and cleared. Someone has marked the trail with small placements of reflective tape. I guess that’s better than spray painted gigantor cairns!

The road going up to the saddle is as rough as ever.

Lots of brittlebush blooming all along the trail. I saw a few hedgehog blooms as well.

I recently bought a drone and took it for a little spin, but I am still a very poor pilot and high winds made it rough on my little mini. I will get better with that.

My cellphone video skills are improving a little. I’m not giving people seizures with my hyper-panning anymore. Ha ha. Here’s a little video from my trip: [ youtube video ]

I explored down lower than normal, almost to the end of the cliffs. It’s a very amazing area for sure.

We headed to the northeast Goldfields to check out some new areas, and I cobbled together a few different points of interest from various routes and triplogs, mostly centered around the 2881 Consensus Loop, knowing we wouldn't have time to see them all today. We parked at the small pullout along SR 88 where the Consensus Loop starts and followed the route clockwise toward 2881 on a windy morning. The route leading toward the peak was extremely well-cairned...I recognized @Yoder's handiwork from hiking Sunset Arch a few months ago, and some of the cairns along the route today were as much artwork as they were trail markers :).

We circled around to the east side and then up to the peak, and the wind was almost unbearable on top, with gusts that must have been up to 40-50 mph. The views were great, but we didn't spend much time up there before heading down the more gradual slope on the north side.

[ youtube video ]

The traverse to Horns was a very scenic area, with a small arch along the route and a good size cave up in the formations behind us. I'd added the Little Keyhole Saddle route among the other points of interest, and after hiking down from Horns, @TBoneKathy waited while I took a quick detour to see if I could find the keyhole. I didn't have a specific location and didn't know what it looked like, but when I reached the spot where I thought it might be located, I did see a tiny, keyhole-shaped arch on top of a rock formation. The description said it was small, but this was only a few inches tall...someone who's been there will have to confirm if what I saw was actually Little Keyhole. If so, that's the smallest named rock formation I've encountered...if not, I guess I found Really Little Keyhole.

We detoured off the main loop again and explored north toward Peaks 2178 and 2135 and saw a few arches, but I didn't have time to go up to the peaks. Next up was Canyon Lake Massif 2276. Hiking along SR 88 with all the road noise wasn't exactly a highlight today, but the views from the massif made it a worthwhile stop, and the wind had calmed down some by afternoon.

[ youtube video ]

We hiked back to the loop and headed south following Willow Creek. It was a lot more rugged than a lot of the other Goldfield creek beds, and we had to bypass multiple deep pools on the hike out. The official route has two of the pools marked, but we there were 4-5 that we ended up navigating around--all of them surprisingly deep given the dry conditions, though it looked like at least one was fed from a spring upstream. The final large pool had a lot of debris nearby...old irrigation tubing, buckets, rusty pipe, and other random stuff. That final section of the loop ended up being a lot and interesting than anticipated...there's a lot more going on down along the spring than you'd ever see just driving by on 88.

As expected, we didn't get to everything I'd mapped out, but it was a good day with a lot of variety in the terrain and scenery. In typical Goldfield fashion, we saw ~3x the number of arches as we saw other hikers today :). And I found a Leatherman multi-tool in the dirt on the way to Horns of Dilemma, which was a nice bonus.

After seeing the amazing sunrise the day before, I was hoping for a repeat performance this morning. Not quite as amazing this morning, but it’s always a nice visit up to the cliff edge.

The hike up is the same as always. The road going up seems a little worse for wear and the trail at the start is a little overgrown. After reaching the top, the trail is very easy to follow.

The views at the edge are always amazing. Mostly clear skies with a few clouds on the horizon. No epic color show, but the pre dawn was nice.

A few boaters out early and I spotted some campers at one of the view areas on the western shore where one of the dirt roads ends.

Got in my sunrise hike, a little exercise and managed some pics of the beautiful scenery.

Another outstanding New Year's Day celebration sponsored by @Outdoor_Lover. :y:

Angela, Tom, Terry, Christina, Larry, Owen, Gavin, Wally and myself joined Pam on the massif overlooking Canyon Lake for some champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and cookies on a gorgeous morning. The trip to the top is a little rough in spots, but I don't think anyone will remember the trip up or down. The party at the top, however, was memorable as always.

Great choice for this location, Pam. Nice seeing everyone again. Happy New Year!

Picture perfect day to hike this short on distance but long on views hike. After parking in the vicinity of the mailbox without problems we gathered up supplies and started hiking but in a short ways we noticed another vehicle parked below us as we headed up FR 1821. Turns out it was the SuperstitionGuy mobile so one of today’s highlights included meeting Owen ,waiting for us at the high point after his inspiring hike using lofstrand crutches : app : he shared some stories about hikes and interesting post hike rides. Nice meeting his grandson Gavin on leave from the Army, thank you for your service young man and for taking time to join us today. Shout out to bartender Ray whose generous bar tending made the next hike up to the Horns of Dilemma most interesting. On arriving to the “dining” area with gorgeous views there was an HAZ in rocks to greet us, source remains a mystery :o . As usual the cookies and chocolate covered strawberries were tasty. Nice to finally meet Wally and seeing Terry ,Christina , Larry ,the official photographer ,and of course the chief videographer Angela again. Thanks Pam :yr: for organizing this and providing goodies and dutifully waiting for everyone to return safely.

Another memorable New Year's Day Hike organized by @outdoor_lover. Amazing views from the top of the massif, enjoyable company and Pam's fabulously delicious homemade oatmeal cookies and chocolate coated strawberries with champagne to toast in the New Year. Thank you, Pam. Also thanks to Ray for a great job at bartending - never spilled a drop.

Another Successful New Year's Day in the Books. It couldn't have been a more perfect day with perfect friends. Warmer than forecasted and we left the pollution zone of the city behind us, leaving nothing but perfect views of the Goldfields, Supes and Four Peaks.

I picked this Hike due to several reasons, mostly personal, but it's been a "default" New Year's Day Hike on my list for several years. I wanted to save this Hike for bad weather or in case I wasn't physically up for something harder. The latter would be the case this year. I haven't been able to get out and do much Hiking since September and my right knee has been giving me a fit since the weather turned cold. I haven't had a pain free hike since October. I also injured my right arm at the Gym, so I have trouble lifting much weight. In short, I'm a mess and overweight to boot. So I picked something easy this year. But the Reward of the Views is huge, so I knew it would be a good party anyway.

We had 3 new Participants this Year. It was awesome to see Wally and get him out of his comfort zone in the Supes. And thanks to his Grandson, Gavin, Owen would join us this year for the first time. He and his Grandson started an hour earlier and met us at the top. It was Amazing and Wonderful. Great to see you again Owen and a big hug to Gavin for helping you join the Party! And you made amazing time going down, I didn't catch you until you were at your car! So cool that you could make this Hike!

Considering that the Hike wasn't terribly strenuous, 8 of us managed to down 3 bottles of bubbly in record time and we left the top with 4 empty bottles and all empty containers. We sure enjoyed Owen's stories up top as well. It was a great party with great views and great hopes for a better year. It certainly started off nicely for sure. Thank You to everyone for joining me this time around and for helping haul up the goodies! Special Thanks to Ray for Bartending and Larry for being the Official Group Photographer this year. The Help is always appreciated. :)

After we got down to the Vehicles again, I decided to join the group going for the Horns of Dilemma. My knee was acting up some, but I decided to try it. I stopped about halfway and let the others keep going. The knee and the legs were done and I was overdressed for what turned out to be a warm day. I waited at the halfway point for awhile, just enjoying being out and then returned to the truck. The rest of the Horns party arrived back about 30 minutes later.

A really good start for a brand new year. I couldn't have asked for anything more than the company of great people and friends in the great Outdoors.

I was glad Pam chose this as our hike. It is a hike we actually discussed when we did the Massacre Falls hike earlier in 2020. I happened to be staying at the Lost Dutchman State Park the nite before so it worked out perfectly. Pam, besides being the hostess, was the parking attendant so as to make sure everyone had a place to park in a rather limited area.

Everyone was generous in helping to carry up the morning's bounty and we were off, not sure if Owen was already on his way since we didn't see his vehicle.
The road walk is a bit slippery and steep in places. We soon saw Owen's vehicle below us. We continued on our way up the road and waited at the top of the road for a moment checking out the dam below. The old road was blocked here by 6 or so tall and close together rebar, an interesting choice for a road block. From there it was up the steep side of the hill. It really didn't take too long to get toward the top from where some scenery picture taking could commence.

As we wandered along we eventually saw Owen and his grandson Gavin. It was a real treat to see the legend in person and we were lucky to hear some of his great stories. Also impressive that Owen was able to use his cane-like instruments to get up the steep stuff. Arriving at the tip of the Massif I immediately saw the rock HAZ so that was pretty cool. I tried to incorporate it in my picture. And then the partying commenced as Pam and everyone emptied their packs.

Ray is really taking his bartending duties seriously 🍾 and made sure everyone's glass was always full but even more impressive; not a drop got spilled 🥂 from what I saw. Pam graciously made us all a baggie full of treats and seriously, I know this is why I like this hike the most  . This time the strawberries were particularly juicy and sweet and of course, the chocolate made them extra good. The cookies, awh the cookies, could be a meal in and of themselves. Who needs regular food?!

Oh yes, and the views, were stunning. I do think it was a good thing Wally could at least see the Superstitions as I suspect he felt a little out of place with the Goldfields around him😉. Owen regaled us with a few good stories too. Honestly I don't know where the time goes except it goes too fast when we're all together on top of a beautiful peak with views for miles. We had a nice toast and the group photo which is always fun for Pam to orchestrate with Larry's guidance as the photographer.

Everyone slowly said their goodbyes and we headed over the top and down the hill to the road with an occasional stop for pictures and of course my movie taking. Owen had made good time as I saw him just below me as I hit the road. Another wonderful New Year's Day and a great way to kick off the year we've all been waiting to start🎉.

Plans changed and I came up with a couple of short hikes last minute.
Ben joined us for these.
Cold, clouds and breezy, so we kept the pace up.
This is a fun, short hike that provided great view of the Supes, Goldfields, Four Peaks and Canyon Lake.

Part 2 of my short Goldfields adventure. I think FR 1821 could be driven up to the dam overlook leaving only the final scramble to the plateau and overlook. Nonetheless, the views were amazing and the hike was pleasant. Will be back soon for Horns of Dilemma which would have been an easy 1/2 punch but life got in the way on this beautiful day.

I needed to get a quick hike in before work and thought this one would fit the bill. I arrived at the Dam Rd at 545am and started up. I could see some nice looking clouds in the pre dawn sky and thought I might have a nice sunrise. The jeep road is the same as always and the trail up is looking good too.

There was a little chill in the air this morning, but it felt really good. I can still feel the summer heat in my memory. The views up top on this little peak are really amazing. The colors were already starting up even before I hit the edge of the cliff.

I brought some coffee with me this time and took a few pictures and drank my morning coffee while watching a very vibrant sunrise. Nobody but me, the sky, the wind and the scenery. A good way to start the day.

Quick jaunt up to the top with a plan to shoot the Milky Way. Once darkness came on it was evident many hot spots and flareups were still occurring along a distant ridge line northeast of Canyon Lake.

Took the opportunity to enjoy a quick evening hike with a view of the Bush fire. I've never seen so much traffic on the 88, but nobody put any effort to go more than 10 feet off the road, so our sunset fire view was without company. Except the resident rattlesnake that lives on this trail.

By the naked eye, it's not as explosive as I had expected. But it is active over dozens of miles. The most active fire seemed to be around Cane Spring Canyon, perhaps heading south toward El Recortado. Lots of heavy smoke illuminated by flames just out of view from our vantage point. Wind is pushing the opposite direction, but it might burn south to the river/lake corridor as I doubt there is any effort at suppressing it there.

Visible flames across all four peaks, to the highest points, the saddles, and the ridges both north and south of the peaks. For many miles. An active line appeared to be burning near the beeline up toward Sunflower and Mt. Ord. While the whole thing isn't on fire at once, areas of visible fire spans dozens of miles.

As always, I can't get my camera to take night photos. Luckily, I combined with @juliachaos, who has a camera who can do that, but can't ever transfer them to a computer. Teamwork FTW! :)

A sad but still impressive view. So far, the Goat is still intact. :y:
