"wow that escalated quickly!"

So Four Peaks was on my radar after reading JJ's recent triplog. That led to a causal conversation with John at Boulders on Sunday about why neither one of us have hit that high point, some how that escalated into me knocking out the Mother Lode!

Nothing was really ideal about this Mother Lode trip either. I didn't even leave Boulders until 10, and it was not until about 11:30 p.m. that the idea of the Mother Lode even crossed my mind while searching for driving directions and a route up to Brown's Peak. I thought why not just download a route and play it by ear? But whose route? I knew well enough not to touch anything done by Dave 1, Joe, Bob P, or J.J. ;)

I noticed that Chumley had taken Claire on his last Mother Lode trip so I figured that route was probably more in my wheel house and sadly more conducive to my skill set and conservative nature. After all, I would be going solo. Lets be real though, I upped the ante a tad bit on Chumley's route, found a few more "direct" approaches ;)

Again nothing was ideal about the planning for this little hike, I jotted down on a 3" by 5" note card "4321 classic" "1234 hard" some driving directions on the back and the names of the peaks by number, that was the extent of my planning. However, to be honest at that point I was pretty much reserved to just finally knock out Brown's Peak.

Even when morning hit I was still just committed to Browns Peak, slept in a little, went to the gym and did not even finish up until nearly 6:30, came home ate a quick little breakfast and really did not rush to leave town. In hindsight, could have probably did without the 5 a.m gym run, there were no shortages of opportunities to work other muscles besides the legs on this hike.

Didn't even start hiking until 9! Sacrilege for the last day of June in AZ! However, thanks in part to my usual early morning caffeine buzz, I thought why not? Although, in hindsight it would have probably been prudent to let someone know where and what I was doing before sister's peak, when I finally got the bright idea to at least shoot Chumley a quick text.

I don't know if I always took the right route, but I made it! The hike was awesome, just a nice little test of nerves, strength, stamina etc. It also had a little twist at the end.

I ran into two guys on way back to TH, and their exact first words to me were, "hey, we are a little loss." When I came across them they were down to one water source between the two of them and measuring shadows in an attempt to determine the cardinal directions. They had violated a very basic rule that whenever I bring up people scoff and laugh at me. A map is nearly useless for the most part if you can not identify any of your cardinal directions, last I check paper maps do not orient their self. I don't want to make light of their situation, but they were close to the TH. However, they were preparing to head back to the fork heading towards Amethyst Mine, as they were sure that is where they went wrong. I told them, "look you two are grown men, so I wont lecture you, but I am going to hike probably a 1000 miles this year, and you will never catch me out hiking without at the very least my compass and GPS and preferably a map if possible." They totally got it and were relieved to join me for final stretch back to TH. Although, a comical situation to most of us, this is how tragedies happen, so if I don't show up, these two guys with about 20 oz of water would have hiked all the way back to the mining area, probably turned around again and who knows what may have happened from there. When we got to the car they told me their goal was to knock out at least three of the peaks, to give a perspective they started ten minutes after me and did Brown's Peak plus about 300 feet towards his brother before they wisely backed off. In fact, the one guy said, "hey did you find you had to climb to hit all those peaks today, because we were climbing!?" I replied, "a little" ;)

After Action Review (AAR):

One thing I did well: Route finding, I don't remember ever having to back track, although, when I post my route it may say different.

One thing I need to improve on: Communication! probably does not hurt to let someone know where I am at for these type of hikes.

One thing I can sustain: Pace was solid, granted I had a route as guide, but was still able to knock out the Mother Lode in under seven hours, seems respectable from the triplogs I read.

Consumed before hike: 1 scoop of NO Explode, 1 NOS Energy drink and a bowl of Kix, Just a little 600mg caffeine buzz to start your day.

Consumed During hike: 80 oz of water, 20 oz of Gatorade, two Fig Newtons, a Rice Crispy Treat and three peanut butter crackers, no time to eat when you are climbing all day.

Final Notes: I always have a soundtrack in my head for my hikes, usually a song I am too embarrassed to admit was stuck in my head, and I silently and even aloud sometimes usually recite the one chorus I know over and over, Well for this hike that song was "Mother" by Danzig, I thought very appropriate.

Just a great way to end my most productive month of hiking as a HAZ member, from Grand Canyon to the top of Humphreys, Bear Wallow, Blue Range, Pacheta, some peaks and high points around Prescott and a nice little grand finale..The Mother Lode.

HAZ Appreciation:Thank you Janelle for route, Chumley said you can thank Janelle for that route, so thank you.

We attempted this route about two years ago and, due to my extreme lack of experience at the time, failed miserably. Luckily, Rachel can't back down from a challenge so I got her to try again. This time we were determined not to fail.

The Alder Saddle Trail (or what's left of it) is nothing like we remembered. There were sections to bushwack through to get to the top of the saddle but I've definitely done worse. We also kept re-finding the trail pretty easily-- no route finding issues like last time.

From the saddle to the summit is a whole different story. We took the advice from Preston's description and stayed a bit low on the south side of the saddle to avoid the thicker brush. The terrain begged for us to stay south instead of heading back up high and attacking the ridge directly from the east side and that turned out to be a bit of a mistake. From a distance, it appeared that we'd be able to make our final ascent from a bit southeast of the summit. As we got close, we found out that it was not going to be possible. We backtracked a bit northeast until I could find a spot we could summit from. Fortunately after some bushwacking, I found a spot we could climb up. It was a bit sketchy but I felt like it was pretty do-able. Rachel's opinion was something similar to "this is really stupid and dangerous but what choice do we have?" :sl:

Soooo.... we made the summit and it was worth all the effort. We met a few other hikers at the top and ate some lunch. We eventually made our way down the chute and headed back to the trailhead. It's been quite a while since I'd been up Browns and had forgotten how treacherous that chute actually is. It gave us a little added adventure on the way down.

After finally accomplishing this, I'm kind of surprised that more HAZ folks haven't done it.

My goodness, this one was a doozy!

The beginning of this hike is absolutely beautiful. The Four Peaks wilderness area is always what I imagine Arizona hiking should be, and at the trailhead, the weather was flawless, too. After turning up toward the Alder saddle, the trail dissipates almost immediately. However, the route finding through this bit wasn't too tough, and repeatedly let up to display patches of perfectly clear trail. At the saddle, however, things begin to get hairy. The brush is dense and difficult, and actually finding a spot to climb up to the summit is a real challenge. I felt unnerved trying to scramble up some pretty slick rock slabs. Yes, at the summit it was beautiful. Yes, I'm glad I did it. But c'mon. There's a perfectly good trail! I just kept wondering why I hadn't tried that option, first?

We met some other hikers at the summit, and then headed down the chute toward the parking lot. Going down was much easier, though that chute is still pretty tricky!

Overall, good hike and great day. But from now on, I'm bagging my peaks on trail first, if it's an option.

Get ready for a laugh cuz this whole day was a total mess and we got beat by Alder Saddle big time. If you want a full belly laugh, I'll let you take a look at my GPS data.

It started off rough just getting to the TH. My ruck overheated about 3/4 of the way up El Oso and I had to pull over for about 45 minutes to let it cool down. Luckily it restarted fine and didn't seem to have any troubles the rest of the way. We wanted to do Brown's Peak and I'd never gone up Alder Saddle before so I figured a little bushwacking adventure would be a good time. The Four Peaks trail was beautiful as always-- really nice views of Roosevelt Lake and a good breeze most of the way.

We made it to Alder Saddle Trail and it became a bushwack within probably 100 feet. That trail is completely overgrown off and on for about a third of it. I'm not talking about short brush but over your head overgrown. You can barely make out the trail coming from the Four Peaks trail direction but coming back from the other way, its almost impossible to find in places. At times, it does open up nicely for short stretches, though. I would imagine that if there's not some maintenance done on this trail by the end of summer, Tonto is allowing it to be reclaimed by nature and taking it off the maps. The trail is completely gone way before HAZ's trip description describes.

Once the trail ends, it becomes less of a bushwack and more of a bulldoze. Seven foot tall brush and thick as can be-- my arms are completely cut up for proof. We tried a whole array of routes and after being stuck in cages of brush and falling through countless rotten logs and spider nests, Nothing was getting done and it seemed as if we were getting nowhere (probably because we weren't). In hindsight, I have a couple ideas but that didn't help me yesterday. We were beat and amongst our laughter finally admitted defeat. It was fun, though. We made our way back to the trail which was no easy task either and eventually after losing the Alder trail off and on, got back to the Four Peaks trail.

Planning this trip, I new that Four Peaks trail was an easy way in and then getting up Alder Saddle to Brown's Peak and over would be a major grunt. I also planned for getting back to the TH from the other side of Brown's being an easy downhill end to a tough trail. Well, we didn't make it that far and coming back on the Four Peaks trail was brutal at times especially following our bushwack and bulldozing mess. We finally got back to the TH and couldn't be happier to be there. Though we only did 9.5 miles total, it turned out to be one of my rougher hiking experiences and my arms are a cut up and stinging mess.

My lesson for this hike: when doing a bushwack and the most recent triplogs for that hike are over two years old-- be ready for anything!

Turned back near the top...the snow+rock was making it too slippery...and I started to get really nervous about descending the west gully in my "hiking sneakers". Exhausting...4Peaks kicks my butt pretty often...

GPS had 10.6mi, 3460 elevation gain. 5 hours up, and 4 hours down. That's one nasty bushwack Preston and Joe...

I was reviewing some other triplogs in this area, and realized that I already have traversed all but a very tiny portion of this trip in one day. However, I did the loop in the counterclockwise direction, since it was an aborted Motherlode attempt. After peak #2, I realized that 90 degrees is still hot when you're out there all afternoon, even if it is 108 in Phoenix. Yes, I gave up again. So I went down to the drainage running north and south. This drainage/gully lies just to the east of the Peaks, and someone had helpfully cairned the drainage, as if you could get lost going up that thing. When I got to the top ridgeline that connects Brown's Peak with Alder Saddle, I saw how high up Brown's was, and figured Alder Saddle must be easier. Darkness was looming, but the sun had taken its toll on me, so a couple of hours later, I made it to the saddle, and the trail appeared from out of nowhere, just as my topo map guaranteed it would with the reassuring label "pack trail". I was really tired, but glad to be on the trail again, and another three slow hours down trail #130 got me back to my car. Someone may claim that there is a trail between Brown's and Alder Saddle, but you have to make your own trail the entire way. You know the drill - go through the chaparral and dead manzanita, around the pine trees and cactus, and don't forget your body armor.

Simply fabulous! The views keep changing with every turn. This is the ultimate loop for the upper wilderness. I tried this loop counter clockwise around 1999 and failed. Thanks to Preston for suggesting clockwise

The trail becomes un-maintained on the Alder Trail. We missed a switchback just before Alder Saddle and paid dearly surfing chaparral. It all worked out as the views away from the saddle are among the best for the area with the mass of the four peaks shrining above. Albeit hot, glad I wore pants :o

A great route-finding and peak bagging adventure with Joe. Saw some maples and douglas firs along the Four Peaks Trail, then came a face full of brush and cursing on the ascent of the Alder Saddle "Trail" The east face of Brown's was steep but do-able, with 180 degree views above Alder Saddle. Perfect weather, wasn't even cold on top (50 degrees in the sun). I could have stayed on top all day. Descended the peak via the chute and Brown's Trail. Got to see Woodstock Rock. This is now one of my most favorite hikes :D
