Great trip, my wife's first overnight backpacking trip and did great. Hiked in early Monday morning, most of the creek-side camp spots were filled, a few very large groups of Europeans.

The tribe has upped the oversight compared to previous trips. Our pack tag was checked everyday by one of two rangers. They stopped by an chatted every day, asked if there were any problems. Also saw a pair of BIA Officers walking thru camp everyday, as well as several officers in town.

the weather and water was perfect, clouds moved in on Tuesday. We hiked our Wed afternoon, perfect temps

wife and I spent our 24th anniversary weekend in flagstaff, mntn biking and hiking. This was her first trip to the summit. Quite a few people, great weather, smoke from the fires obscured the view of the canyon

great fun!

Started at Jacobs Crosscut on the 1st water road. My girl's first time to the top. Jogged across Jacob's up to the turn, slogged to the top. Most people were heading down given our 1230pm start. Had Flatiron to ourselves. Scrambled down and jogged Jacobs back to the truck.

Got my reservation a month ago for this the first week of fall break. Planned on taking my 17y/o twin sons down with my bro in law. The day before we were to leave the BIL pulled out so I added my 11y/o daughter to the itinerary... it would be her first backpacking trip ( :scared: )

Left Phx Sunday afternoon and car-camped at Hilltop, hit the trail at ~830am, cool temps all the way until we hit Supai where we baked in the full sun. Along the narrows section there we several stinky piles, where the tribe burned and then covered the carcasses of the 12 horses / mules lost in the flash flood last month. I counted 4.... Dogs and/or other critters had partially dug them out, it will take some time. :bdh:

Got into the campground, several large groups, but got a nice spot just downstream of the spring, had lots of cover and decent access down the bank to the creek. The creek is still heavily scoured from the flash floods. Work crews were all over the place, cutting dead trees and burning them. Took the kids to Havasu and swam and waded back to camp.

I went on this hike with the idea of lighting the falls after dark with a super-bright LED ($20 amazon purchase). I bought it for mountain biking home after work in the dark evenings and boy is that thing BRIGHT! like Blinding... 3 blocks away! So I toted it along and we hit Havasu Falls after dark and had fun lighting it as I shot some long exposures.. hikers on the trail above were watching us work... wondering what we were doing.

They slept well that night... nice breeze overnight, clear skies.. for some reason I placed my bivy tent under a large branch of the dead sycamore at our spot... I had the recurring thought 'widowmaker' with every gust of wind. :scared:

Tues morning we headed down Mooney and explored down past Fern Grotto and then around the corner. Few people down there, but one very large tour group paused to don and doff their water shoes or hiking shoes at every crossing. Was funny to watch. I entertained the idea of heading to Beaver, but then my girl slipped and tumbled and whacked her head, knocking sense back into my plans ](*,) So we waded around, swam around the falls and then headed back to camp for lunch. After lunch we went upstream to New Navajo Falls, the upper section if very lush and is forming into a great swimming area, much like old Navajo falls. Lots of travertine formations, overhangs, pools, etc. Swam here for the afternoon and then headed back for dinner. After dark I hiked back up to Navajo and lit it up with the LED. Caught the Milky way rising over it as a bonus.

Had a leisurely Wed morning, we went back up to Navajo for more swimming and then back to camp for lunch and then to break it down for the trip out. As we were packing, we noticed a large influx of people, a group stopped at our site and asked if they could take it when we left. They explained that the South Rim had been shut down due to the budget failure....

The hike up to Supai was hot, we recharged at the Tourist office and then headed up, the boys left us after Supai so the girl and I spent some quality daddy-daughter time hiking out... she actually said "we probably wont get along so well when I hit puberty", D'OH!!! :o :scared: ](*,)

Took an extended break at the turn toward the switchbacks, took some more star shots. We both said 'it would be great to see a Shooting Star' - just as one burst overhead...

and then she left me in the dust after the second switchback... :worthy:

Breakfast at Denny's in Flagstaff, there were several large tables of drunk and angry Asians, likely had their trips ruined by the shut-down

Ran the boys up to Fossil springs. Saw a bad motorcycle wreck at Control Road (west), stopped and helped, ambulance soon arrived. Lady went off the road and landed on some rocks, lots of scrapes. We just tried to immobilize her till help got there. Hit the TH at ~130, an hour down. Over a year ago I bought an REI Mars 85L and had not had the chance to use it. I loaded it up for this trip and it was GREAT! well padded, lots of adjustments, etc, very comfy. Made camp in the flats and then hiked to the dam. Had the place to ourselves for hours until some day hikers came in. Evening was nice, lots of bugs, no critters like last time when we had skunks and ringtails prowling all night. Around 9pm, two scout troops arrived and were quite lively. Night was cool, mid forties. Got up at 7 and hit the dam for more swimming, broke camp and hit the trail at 1015, 2 hours to top out, LOTS of people headed down.

After my fun at the Canyon, decided to hit West Fork and Sedona on my way back to Phx. The Snow was thick all along 89A, lots of traffic kept the speed at about 25mph. Parked at Call o Wild, hiked in.. followed a well beaten trail into West Fork, decided to go in for an hour. After about 20 min I was breaking trail in 12-15in of powder, stopping to shoot. Turned around at the big boulder which the trail skirts and followed my steps back. Saw one couple as I neared the 'cabin'

Took Friday off and ran up to South Rim early AM. Got to the Canyon and it was socked in, lots of snow and fog, headed east to Grandview and Lipan and got some nice shots in brief openings thru the clouds. Saturday morning was more of the same, but they closed East Drive and Hermits roads as the overnight snow was deep. About 2PM the clouds parted so I I went to Mather and then to Bright Angel, parked and hiked out to Maricopa, hoping that the sunset would burst thru the layers. There was a bit of pink, but nothing dramatic. As I was hiking back in the dark, the plow passed, so I knew I could drive in in the morning. Got a few shots of hikers ascending Bright Angel, then I went to the tunnel for some shots. Nice hot shower at the hotel very nice after hours in ~20 degree + 30mph winds. Sun morning brought me back to Maricopa, a few beams made it thru the clouds, then lit up the canyon later in the morning. Went out to other western points for nice shots of west canyon. East Rim was still closed, so I headed to Flag, and then West Fork...

quick overnighter with the boys. Car camped just outside of Don's Camp. Lots of coyotes howling all night. Hit the trail around 9am, upper parking was full and lower was nearing full. Many people on the trail. Cardinal calling in the trees up the canyon. Poppies blooming on the slopes. Ventured out to the Pine and then back down by 1130.

decided that since my twin boys were off on Fall break, I would undertake a road-trip with them to see a few Northern AZ - Southern UT sites.

First target was Coyote Buttes / Wave walk-up permit. We drove from Phoenix to just past Page and overnight car-camped at Cottonwood Canyon Rd.

Shot a timelapse of the stars
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sundevilst ... hotostream

In the morning we went to the Paria Ranger office and signed up for the permit drawing. There were 80 people total in 35 groups vying for the 10 permits. Several had been there for days trying to get one.It was an international affair, mostly Europeans "on Holiday" but also some Asians. We weren't drawn. There are a few Youtube vids on how the drawings work, search "The Wave Permit".

I decided a quick hike would assuage my sadness, so we drove a mile east and visited the Toadstools, neat area, lots of cool formations, flowers. We even climbed the butte and got shots of the rocks on top.

We had lunch in Kanab and I flipped a coin to decide if we should go to North Rim or Zion... North Rim won, so off we drove. Got to the North Rim and detoured to Cape Royal, got some great shots of the thunderstorms coming into the Canyon. Fall colors are setting in up there. Decided to go to the main lodge area, checked the campground (no room at the inn), Caught sunset from the lodge and some distant lightning from Bright Angel Point.

We drove out of the park to a FS road and over-nighted... was deciding on whether to go back to Paria and re-try the Wave permit or head to Page and go to Antelope. Decided on Antelope.. thunderstorms skirted us all night long. next day drove to Vermilion / Marble Canyon bridge and noted that there was lots of clouds over Page, so no light in the slots... headed home.

Decided to go storm chasing up in Sedona on Fri and Sat... unfortunately the storms stayed SOUTH (BAH) Hiked off of Chaves Ranch Rd to the mesa above Crescent Moon Ranch park and shot some of Cathedral formation with the reflections in the water... the moon rose but I was in the wrong spot... to be remedied on Sat.

I car camped up on top of Schnebly Hill, serenaded all night long by elk bugling. Took some time lapse of Sedona and lightning to the west.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sundevilst ... 142787000/

Sat morning I shot some along the descent along Schnebly Hill Rd, then proceeded to West Fork, where I hiked in my Five-Fingers without issue, mostly along the creek trying to get detail shots using flash. 2 hours in and 1 out because clouds were forming and I didn't have good water protection for the gear (D'OH!)

Went to Red Rock Crossing and the crowds were thick at the creek, so I climbed the butte (Baldwin?) just to the west of Cathedral formation and shot the sunset with the full moon rising thru the spires. Caught an amazing moon-lit thunderstorm nearing Cordes Junction.

My father in law set up some game trail cams on the seeps along the Peralta trail to see what was there (they have a cougar permit and sheep tag)

:scared: :o :scared: :o :scared:

maybe we should move this to a Forum topic - wasn't my intent to stoke a fire. Was just trying to show the Hazers what's sharing our trails in the Supes.

Bighorn hunters go through a rigorous tag process and allowed to harvest ONE in their lifetime, so they carefully plan that ONE hunt to make it count... and yes they mount the head on the wall, and no, I haven't heard of many Bighorn sheep recipes.

As for Cats, if you perchance see one, it is likely because it is stalking you, or you are VERY lucky...

and for full disclosure, I am a carnivore, but not a hunter.. I would rather shoot animals with my Canon

I refer to you a recent Backpacker article titled Killer Hike

Met up with TortoiseHiker (Denny) and HippiePunkPirate (Jake) at Crosscut TH on 1st Water Rd and hiked up to Praying Hands for some photos. The clouds disappeared over the Supes but got some nice color over Four Peaks. Nice cool hike, sweet shots and great company. Tried my new DroidX GPS... I bumped it on the way up and it paused.
